    Hi Rob,

I recognize the importance of warranties and resale values, but I never said I'd pay sticker for a Rendezvous, nor was I suggesting that anyone else do so. In fact, I specifically said that I personally did not nor was I willing to do so.

My comments were in response to another poster who made the blanket statement that the Rendezvous was overpriced without rebates. I just have a lot a trouble with a blanket statement like that. Which Rendezvous are we talking about; the one whose sticker starts at just over $25K, or the one whose sticker maxes out at $35K?

Even for the maxed out version, what exactly is overpriced about putting a $35K sticker on a Rendezvous when you know and Buick knows that there's more wiggle room on an American sticker price than a German or Japanese sticker. Speaking of which such stickers work out to about $43K for the M320, $42K for the RX300, and $37.5K for the MDX for closest comparable configurations. I'm not saying there aren't good reasons to pick one of these other three vehicles over the Rendezvous including warranty and resale, but "overpriced" is not one of them.

Hazen is two and a half years old. Before ordering our RDV, we were at the dealership to discuss our potential order (okay, I was doing most of the talking). Our sales person gave him a balloon and one of the RDV replicas to play with. To h3ll with the balloon, he wanted the car! When our business was done, Hazen was not happy to learn he had to give the model back to the dealer. He handed the replica to the sales person and maintained his composure while his lower lip quivered. Our sales person promised to get us a replica if we ordered through them. Since then we have been in touch to remind her of her promise however, I wasn't holding my breath... our deal was done.

Well, last Saturday Hazen and I went to get the mail. I opened our mailbox and Hazen walked headfirst into the mailbox door! No blood, but someone was screaming bloody murder until I told him there was a package for him. Tears became giggles as we headed back to the house. When we opened the package, an RDV box was inside. Looking at trademark multicolored box, Hazen yelled "Rendezvous" and started clapping his hands with excitement. After all of the information my wife and I reviewed, Hazen associated the trademark box with the Rendezvous... and not just the car, but the NAME of the car! We opened the box and sure enough, Hazen got his replica.

However, the replica wasn't from our dealer or from Buick. Using this forum, CWJ picked up on the fact that the dealer wasn't going to come through on their promise. After an exchange of email and offering a reciprocal trade agreement, CWJ simply sent us the replica. From the bottom of our heart, thank you CWJ. To us grown-ups, it's no big thing. But to a two year old, having a little car that looks like mom and dad's big car is a lot of fun. Personally, it's great to know there are still people in this world who are willing to do something for others without wanting anything in return. Again, thank you for the replica.

And to those of you who have kids, be aware. Be VERY aware! We have NO idea what our children are going to pick up on. Who would have thought Hazen would associate the trademark RDV box with the name of the vehicle. Now if only I could get him to associate football with the Raiders (no comments from the peanut gallery. That means YOU J325!).

    Go Raiders!

Anyone know if there is a way to play MP3's in the RDV?.....I ordered the 6CD changer so I have no tape deck. I used to have an adapter to put in a tape player to listen to my CD player but I don't know of a similiar gadget to insert in a CD player.....that sounds like trouble . Perhaps there is a way to broadcast the MP3s to a frequency on the AM or FM bands? Would a car radio shop be able to remove the radio and give me some cables with a switch of some sort?
    Thanks

My hitch arrived yesterday and the dealership is going to put it on Friday afternoon. It even comes with its own custom stinger. I was told it was different from the Aztek but I do not know. Anyway the Group # is 21.260B and the Catalog # is 12497875. It weighs 40 lbs.
  • ra1der5ra1der5 Member Posts: 86
We also have the tow package... not because we plan on pulling anything, I just like the added protection it provides for the engine and transmission.

So here's where I am ignorant... what the h3ll is a "stinger"?

Thanks for sharing your story. It is a wonderful thing CWJ did to make your son happy.

Associating the RDV trademark box with the name of the vehicle is pretty remarkable at his age.

Now to get my son to associate the lawn mower with mowing the lawn.
  • buzzbo99buzzbo99 Member Posts: 111
Its not your ignorance, it is my lack of vocabulary. I was referring to the part the ball bolts to and slides into the bracket. It sticks out under the bumper like a "stinger" on a bee.

I too have nothing to tow but my small fishing boat. But when I read about the larger radiator and extra cooling for oil and radiator, I knew that was the package I wanted. The Texas heat really is hard on a driveline.

    All,

Here's a link to an article from the Detroit News on the RDVs ad campaign with Tiger Woods...

    BY,

Thanks for the link. I will have to keep an eye out for the commercial.

What's funny is JD Powers says the average age of RDV owners is 52. I guess it's better than 60 but not much.

It was also interesting to see that they sold 1,134 RDV's in the first month.

Has anyone seen any up to date sales numbers? I guess the Cleveland dealer was wrong when he said they expected them to be as hot as the PT Cruiser.
  • fedlawmanfedlawman Member Posts: 3,118
I got a call from my dealer yesterday. He received the invoice for our RDV and expects it on July 10th.

Also, the old RDV (#1 - white/moss green) arrived yesterday. I think that order was submitted around mid-May, so it took 5 weeks.

All of the dealers up here are getting them in now. My dealer has five now, and a couple others have gotten their first two.

I think over 1,000 units sold in one month sounds decent considering that nobody has really heard of the RDV yet. Anyone know when the ad campaign begins?
  • ra1der5ra1der5 Member Posts: 86
The coaches finally decided to let you suit up and play the game. Just a couple weeks of conditioning and you're ready to be the QB. Congrats on the arrival of your RDV.

Over 1,000 RDVs sold in a month is pretty good. Especially since there has been virtually NO advertising until recently and the car really won't hit the showroom in full force until the end of the summer. All of the dealerships we received quotes from, except one, have not received ANY RDVs. H3ll, I can't even find a brochure! Originally, my dealership told me they were expecting their first RDV at the end of April... they still haven't received it.

I question the demographics used in the survey to determine the average age of an RDV buyer. Maybe a younger crowd uses tends to use the Internet, but most of the people on this board appear to be under 50.

FYI: Television ads started yesterday (Wednesday).

FYI 2: Our RDV took five weeks also.

I personally have yet to see the RDV ad, as is the case with the majority of the country, so I really wouldn't expect phenominal sales quite yet. However, if you look at GM's sales numbers from April (as seen on media.gm.com), the RDV sold 36 units that month. Since then, the RDV has sold 1,100 units, according to the article. That's a pretty good sales jump with no advertising, and with some dealers still waiting for their first one.

The real test on sales numbers will come over these summer months, as production, deliveries and advertising really kick in. And if by September the RDV isn't selling well, then GM can start to worry, but I really don't expect that to happen. If the Aztek can sell 2,500 a month, and that's with all the negative vibes out there regarding that vehicle, the RDV should be able to do quite a bit better as all the buzz on it is quite positive.

As for the demographics quoted in the article, the average age of 52 has to start getting Buick excited, as again, that's with no advertising, and no real vehicles on the road yet. I fully expect that number to go even lower as more younger folk start to see this vehicle and realize "Hey, that's a great vehicle! Maybe I'm NOT too young for a Buick after all!" Heck, that seems to be what's happened to a lot of us so far!

Ahem, but I couldn't help notice that the Rendezvous in that link just happened to appear to be a Sedona Bronze/Dark Bronzemist combo. Clearly someone somewhere is not a slave to the Indigo Blue cabal (not that there's anything wrong with that).

I can also confirm that the ads started yesterday. The first ad appeared on Good Morning America, since they were featuring one of the ABC drones playing with Tiger that day. And obviously Buick used that fact for (I assume) free ad time. I had already left for work, but Laurie was still getting ready when the ad came on. However, by the time she realized that it was a Rendezvous ad and ran to the TV it was pretty much over. Nonetheless, she did remember that the song lyric was "Willie go round in a circle. Willie fly high like a bird up in the sky ...." Makes sense with the tornado reference, and I can sing the song to myself, but for the life of me I can't remember the artist. Anyone out there able to help me?

As far as the Demographics go, I think the 52 year old stat may possible be right on. What that means is that they REALLY ARE appealing to people like my friends on this board who are in their thirties. After all, Buzzbo and I might possibly be at the upward age of people who post to threads like this. But it would take a goodly number of thirties folks to bring the Buick average down to 52 if we assume that a goodly number of the buyers are in the 60/65+ demographic that represents Buick's core.

    Later,

How do the bean counters know how old you (we) are? I can see if you finance with GMAC, they would have your vitals...but that's it, right?
  • cwjacobsencwjacobsen Member Posts: 293
Having been in the market research business back in an earlier life (1982-1991), it would not be that hard to find out our ages IF you put the resources to it. It seems far too early for customer survey results to have been tabulated.

That said, I imagine that Buick is in fact blowing smoke. I've not known that many marketing front men who would 1) spend the money to reverse engineer the ages of buyers this soon when the customer surveys will provide the data at a much cheaper cost in the near future and 2) let that particular fact get in the way of talking up the results until the data actually comes in. After all, if the facts support the spin, then great. If they don't, well we'll burn that bridge when we come to it.

Are you talking about Billy Preston Jr's old song that started something like "wrote this song ain't got no melody" "just something for my friends" "will it go round in circles" "will it fly high like a bird up in the sky" I can still see his "fro" bouncing as he pounded his keyboard on that song.
  • cwjacobsencwjacobsen Member Posts: 293
Leave it to us to remember that song. Wow, Billy Preston. I can't stop laughing. I always heard the lyric as "Willie." Laurie said it was "World." And you're probably right saying it's "Will it." Oh well, as CCR said, "there's a bathroom on the right." If the average age of a buyer really is 52, then they truly picked a song that hit their "average."

Our RDV arrived yesterday, exactly 1 month from when we ordered it. We can't however take delivery of it because Buick didn't send a window sticker with it and according to our salesman it's federal law that a vehicle can't be sold unless there is a window sticker to go with it. They said it would take about 3-4 days. The salesman told us that they did a dealer trade where they received an Indigo Blue RDV for one of theirs and the Manager was reluctant to trade for a blue one, but did anyway. He didn't have it on the lot more than 3 hours, when someone saw it and bought it on the spot. Ours is Indigo Blue also and I have a feeling that they just want to keep ours on the lot for the weekend to try to generate some interest and the sticker issue was really just so that they could keep the car for a few days. I'll bet if we went by the dealership this weekend we'd find our RDV sitting prominently out front.
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
Considering there is limited supply, 1000+ units seems high. Local dealer had three last week and they are all gone today. They are hoping for more next week. No Rendezvous' means no sales. I'm sure supply will be getting up there in a few weeks.
  • bymclaughbymclaugh Member Posts: 103
I don't know if they are fibbing to you or not, but I know our salesman was in no real hurry to tell us that our RDV was in. He was taking a half day and called me about 5 minutes before he left to tell me it was there. However, I wasn't at my desk, and he didn't say in the message the RDV was there, just that he had some info on it. Then, on my way home, about a mile south of the dealership there was a Blue RDV heading the other way on the road, and I'm pretty sure it was ours. They didn't fess up to it, and it really didn't bother me too much cause we really couldn't get it till the next night anyway, but sure enough I found out that they had our RDV out front the whole day to generate traffic and were calling other customers up who had expressed interest in the RDV so they could look at it. They just delayed calling us.

All in all, it really doesn't upset me that they wanted it on their lot for a little while, as I'm all for generating interest in this vehicle, I just wish they would have been up front about it. All in all, I'm sure your RDV will have a nice spot in the front this weekend, and I know I would have to go check it out in person, even if I couldn't take it home.

Anyhow, congrats on the new arrival!

Actually my son and I were at the dealership about an hour after the salesman called us. I wasn't about to wait 3 or 4 days just to see it. And they actually have 13 more on the front of the lot, but none in blue. I had better not see too many miles on that odometer when we get it or I won't be too happy. I guess I'm not as nice as you :)

mmeehan , Picked up my RDV last month. Went to the dealership a day after they got two in. Liked the Pewter/Greymist . It was a CXL with the SD Versatility Pkg. Had all the options I wanted. Went home to think about it and the next day putn a deposit on it thinking I would have to wait. The salesman asked me when I would like to take delivery and I told him a week would be fine not thinking I would get one. He said no problem. Little did I know it was the one I had looked at. Never thought they would let it go. No doubt all that week it was on display right in front of the showroom. BTW, it did have 82 miles on the odometer when I picked it up. Did not really bother me, the RDV looked beautiful. They of course gave me a full tank of gas:-)Anyone else had similar mileage on theirs?
  • john325john325 Member Posts: 237
Buzzbo: your trailer hitch obviously came in via the dealer after you got your RDV. How long did it take you to get it? I ordered one, only to have them tell me they aren't shipping from GM yet. ??? I told the dealer up here you got yours there in Texas. Do you know where yours shipped from? They're still trying to locate one for us.

Btw, we picked up our Pewter w/ graymist CXL last Friday; it has the Versatility pkg. & memory seats. Drives great! Wife & kids love it. My wife's birthday was yesterday, so it made for a nice present. I finally got everything all programmed.

I saw the RDV commercial yesterday w/ the mad scientist in the castle... Tiger Woods driving out in the RDV; pretty cool. I'm looking forward to seeing the Wizard of Oz one. The place to find the commerials is the Buick Open on ESPN. They got rained out yesterday...

The Rain would not have stopped the Raiders r5, right? Blasphemy aside, have you heard anything more on Al Davis selling his interest??? - Also r5, are you in the Raiders Club that meets in the Scotts Valley Santa Cruz area? My good friend's wife is. She has a large Raider emblem on the side of her front car-door. It must be something in that Scotts Valley water...

One addl. question: Has anyone noticed that the tailgate has to be closed pretty hard so that the "tailgate ajar" light does not come on? A simple/normal push does not seem to do it.

Was just watching NBC and saw the new Rendezvous commercial. It starts out as a minivan and sport-ute follow each other up a hill and into a castle during a lightening storm at night. They go inside and the lightening crashes a few more times. Out comes the Rendezvous with Tiger Woods driving and he says a few words. Cool commercial, definately not like the other dumb Buick ones I continue to see about their stodgy sedans and the golf stuff.

I have the bill of lading and the supplier # if 01686. But the Parts manager told me that if the dealer looked on the computer the numbers he would need would be the Catalog Group #21.260B and Catalog #12497875. He did say he had to stay on top of it because at first they said the materials were not in and then all of a sudden it was available. On the Bill of Lading the date of 05/25/01 is the date. I am assuming that was the date of order but I do not know. I think they will be more readily available since they are being manufactured. I believe when I purchased El Trucko the hitch receiver was only blueprints.

Thanks for the info; at this point it'll be a miracle if I get the hitch in time for our camping trip next thursday. I guess I'll just have to take up the ol' Caravan & use the old bike rack for the kids bikes. I don't want to use the old rack on the RDV. I don't want to scratch up the new paint. BTW, I did buy a bike rack from Buick that'll hook-up to the tow-hitch. It'll hold 4 bikes, just perfect for our family.

    'cause the Raiders can't. LOL!

About two days after you mentioned it on this board, I saw an article on the rumor. Here's a link to an article from the Chronicle...

    http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2001/06/13/MN119176.DTL

Still, I doubt we'll see ol' Al give up on his Raiders. I can't say that I approve of some of his management techniques, none the less, Al Davis IS the Raiders. It would be hard to imagine anyone else running that team.

I'm not involved in the SV club, but I am best friends with the president of the Raider Boosters in Lompoc. We trade old Raider videos.

Congrats on picking up your RDV. That was quick! Seems like you just started posting here about a month ago.

Close the tailgate? Why in the world would you want to do that? The tailgate is half the fun of the game!

Seriously, we DO find you almost have to slam the tailgate to get it to close.

Or was that... slam a few beers to close the tailgate.

There is a row of six toggle switches below the climate controls. Is there an option that uses the 4th switch from the left?

Every fully loaded RDV I've seen has this switch as a blank.

I may have to install a brush guard with some big round PIAA's or maybe underbody neon lights...
  • cwjacobsencwjacobsen Member Posts: 293
That switch is for the Traction control so it would only come into play on a CX.

Tailgate definitely needs a good slam to shut tight.

The Saturday Toronto Star had a front page feature on the Rendezvous in the "Wheels" section. Check it out if you live in the GTA. Actually, it's probably on line at www.thestar.com also.

    Just curious.

BTW, The Toronto Star RDV review can be found by entering "Rendezvous" in the search box located in the top right corner of the main page (www.thestar.com). Sorry, I don't know how to insert links.

CWJ,Hmmm, Tailgate on my RDV closes and locks very easy. The only problem is for the wife pulling it down from the full up position. The air cylinders are rather strong, but she is getting use to it:-)Other then that it is a dream to drive. Have to check out the Toronto Star review. BTW Fedlawman, what is a "Brushguard and PIAA'S"?. Excuse my ignorance:-)
  • fedlawmanfedlawman Member Posts: 3,118
A brushguard is a huge, tubular steel monstrosity that is mounted to the frame of the vehicle in order to protect the car from damage off road. They usually protect the bumper, hood, and headlights.

PIAA is a maker of driving and fog lights. The "big round" one's are often found on rally cars for turning night into day during 24 hour off-road races such as Paris to Dakar.

The brush guard is typically used to mount two or more PIAA's for rally duty.

I'm sure you've seen urban commando's driving their $60,000 Land Rovers with chrome guards on them...just in case.

Of course I was only kidding about installing them on my RDV. Now the neon lights on the other hand...
  • john325john325 Member Posts: 237
Spiritman: I picked up the bike rack (holds 4 bikes) for about $165, if I recall correctly; I believe the tow hitch was about $315 or so - Buzzbo should be able to confirm that since he already received his. It may be a long wait for the tow hitches to come though...

R5, cwj: I'm not sure why the tailgate takes such a strong push to get it to latch properly - doesn't quite seem right. If you don't slam it, the "tailgate is ajar" light comes on.

Did anyone get something that goes with the cargo cloth that covers the cargo area? There are slats that have been sewn into the edges of the cargo cloth (from hook to hook). Seems like it would fit slim poles or something like that to keep the cloth cover from sagging. The dealer had no clue about this.

I saw the "other" RDV commercial today during the Buick Open; very cool! Shows a couple in a SUV chasing twisters; also some young gals in a mini-van, a fellow in his luxury sedan, and Tiger woods on TV w/ Golf clubs, etc... After being gobbled up by the twister, they land w/ Tiger driving out of the twister in the RDV saying "I guess we're not in Kansas anymore" and one of the gals asking, "Are you Tiger Woods?"

    Go 9ers!

I am looking at buying a Rendezvous as a compromise between my thirst for SUV good looks and by wife's desire for the storage space of minvans. However, what concerns me is that this vehicle seems to be mechanically identical to the Aztek (Versitrak, 3.4L, mini-van frame, etc.). Given that the Aztek has had less than glowing reviews in terms of safety, and the lack of crash/rollover test results, I'm somewhat hesitent. I have a 14th month old and another one due next month, which forces me to look at these issues. Damn, I'm old (29!).
    Any thoughts?

    Thanks in advance.
  • fedlawmanfedlawman Member Posts: 3,118
Only two 7 passenger SUV's have been tested so far. The Dodge Durango and the Mercedes ML.

Since you are primarily concerned with your childrens safety, there is no information for you. The aforementioned SUV's were not tested for rear passenger safety.

None of the other 7 passenger SUV's currently on the market have been tested.

If you place all of your faith in industry crash tests (which, IMO you shouldn't), you should stick with what is known and purchase a minivan. The Ford Windstar, Mazda MPV, Honda Odyssey, Chevy Venture, Toyota Sienna, and Dodge Caravan all got five stars for rear seat side impact protection.
  • cwjacobsencwjacobsen Member Posts: 293
Islandpete - Not sure why you singled me out for a "Hmmm" regarding the tailgate. I was just chiming in, in agreement with several other posters who had already mentioned this. I twice got the "tailgate is ajar" light until I got the hang of it, and my wife's first effort to close it resulted in the same thing. Not a problem, just something to learn about the vehicle. On the more positive side, have you and your wife noticed the hand pull slot to the right of the lock on the bottom of the tailgate? I thought this was a nice feature. It's ribbed on the inside so you can get a good grip to get the tailgate started downward against the force of the struts.

Spiritman1 - Plural or not, I think only the interior mirror is automatically dimming. I've seen nothing to suggest that either of Gammera's side mirrors dim. In fact, Tony Bertoli mentioned this prominantly as one of the few gripes he had about his own Rendezvous. Since the side mirrors are so big, this would seem to be one of the (very) few missteps that Buick has made with this vehicle.

Has anyone here been interested in a wood dash trim kit for their nice, new Rendezvous? I found a site that has some great-looking products that really dress-up this new ute's interior. They offer a many, many material choices to choose from too. For more information, go to the following link and in the "Model" box, type "Rendezvous".

I drive by the same street everyday when dropping my daughter off at day care and noticed a new owner of a indigo blue Rendezvous. it's been sitting there for 3-4 days now. I am so jealous.

Has anyone out there got a CX 2WD yet? Seems like all the Rendezvous' I've seen are loaded 4WD versions. I guess the General wants to tap the higher end first.
  • r_wrightr_wright Member Posts: 1
    Dindak,
I picked up my Indigo Blue CX 2WD Redezvous last Wednesday. I ordered the car on May 16th, so it took about 5 weeks from the time it was ordered. I configured the car with the versatility package, the towing package and the sunroof as the base model had all the other features I wanted. I know there has been some criticism of the leather /cloth trim seats with the Buick emblems, but actually they look better in person versus the view the sales catalog provides. I opted for the 2WD version of this car because even though may last two SUV's were AWD, I found it was very seldom that I ever really needed this capability. So for a GMS price of $26,000 I got what I consider a great value in an automobile with all the features I could want.

Someone asked earlier about the mileage on the cars when they are delivered - my Rendezvous had 3 miles on it.

Has anyone hauled around a large load in the back of their RDV yet? This weekend I took my current vehicle, an Olds Bravada with 170,000 miles on it, loaded it up with about 800 lbs of Ikea furniture boxes, and drove 4 hours home with the air conditioning on. There was almost no performance lag. When I got home, my husband asked if the RDV would do that as effortlessly (he really loves the Bravada). I told him I didn't know, I'd have to ask you guys :-).

Sounds good. I just found out that all Canadian 2WD models come standard with traction control (guess GM figures we need it up here), so I'm thinking I'll save some bucks and skip the 4WD. I've never needed 4WD before and I figure gas mileage will probably be better with with out. Sounds like unless it was ordered, 2WD versions are not available yet?

There is no way to know for sure, but one can make a guess.

Your Olds Bravada weighs about the same as the Rendezvous. The Bravada has a bigger engine which provides 5 more horsepower and 40 more lb. ft. of torque.

Based on the power-to-weight ratios of these two vehicles, your Bravada should have a little more performance, but not much.

I know your reasoning for wanting the 2WD but I thought I'd share my thoughts with you.

When I first started shopping the RDV, I decided that I wanted a minimally optioned 2WD with 3rd row (I wanted to go as cheap as possible, ie: $23,500 GMO).

My decision to go with a FULLY loaded AWD came from a number of factors:

    1. My rationalization that I plan to keep this car for a long time and I have never had a "luxury" car with all the bells and whistles. I decided that if I didn't get all the toys (which amounted to another $3600 GMO) I would later regret it.

    2. I determined that although 2WD with traction control is enough for most situations, I liked the added security and resale appeal of AWD.

    3. I figured that if I was looking at the 2WD, why not just convince my wife that we should get a minivan, which has a roomier, more versatile interior.

    4. At the time, I didn't like the grey lower cladding (still not my favourite) and I could only get another colour with the CXL.

Ultimately, I decided that $3600 over the next 8+ years really isn't that much for all the extras included in the CXL (and it's a great value). Not to mention the added satisfaction I would get from owning a CXL.

    Just my thoughts.

    Brian :)
