That would be the first time I've heard of a power loss problem. I wounder where she checked to find that many others were having this problem. It wasn't here or over at the CRV info exchange. I would suggest she try a different service department. Also more information would be good.

What was the problem with the transmission? It seems her biggest complaint is with the service.

Couldn't find the crank shaft problem on the web site.

let me beg for $.02 from anybody.

i just wanna ask about the "Maintenance Required"
LED at the bottom of the speedometer.

when does it light? does it light whenever i
    need an oil change?

    Thanks :)

    beatfarmer: from http://www.thecomplaintstation.com/ i clicked
on H on the line "Find a Complaint Station by letter"
then clicked on Honda then "Honda CRV crank shaft problems"
    is the 7th post.

It is a mechanical indicator that shows green normally, yellow when you are approaching the 7500 mi service interval, and red if you go past 7500 mi. It is a handy reminder to change the oil (If you haven't already) and rotate the tires. If you take it to the dealer for service, they will reset it for you. If you do your own service, you can reset it yourself by inserting the ignition key into the slot next to the indicator.

Yep, there it is. Weird, I looked for it but didn't see it the first time. If they had a working search function it would make life easier. Thats a weird problem. I haven't heard of that one before either.

I need to take the sweet CRV in for her 7500 mi checkup (& check on a weird rattle in her rear -- my cargo cover, maybe?). Anyone have any experience with HONDA OF HOLLYWOOD?

I bought the car at Mel Rapton in Sacramento, but live down here now. I've always had great service with Rapton & wanna make sure these guys will provide same.

    Thanks for any reviews.

i agree about the transmision being made in japan and taking forever to get here. what she should have done, since her car is a cr-v, honda care does provide "vehicle of similar or larger size" as rental. she should have fought it.

hesitation can be a sign of clogged fuel, aqir filter, spark plugs out of gap, plug wires that are shorting out, distributor cap that shorts out. or just bad fuel
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Isn't the ignition distributorless nowadays?

Has anyone installed an aftermarket Daytime Running Light
for your CR-V? Can I go to Canada and have one of
    the dealers there install OEMs?

    have a nice weekend everyone!!!

Why not just turn your lights on and save on the expense?

Found this while in the 2002 Tiburon forum. This is probably the redesigned Kia Sportage...and it does look nice.

I take the dog with me at times he rides in his crate. When you want to get him out,of the crate. There's a place for him to stand. Its great to have the seats folded down flat. I took the head rest off and left them off,as they were kinda in my line of vision when I back up.

But then again, when was the last time you saw anything original coming from the Korean automakers? Besides, I don't mind the Mercedes resemblance. I actually thought it looked more like an RX300
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
That Sportage looks like an RX300 with a nose transplant from a Mercury Sable. I mean, *exactly* like that.

I don't know why Kia doesn't sell the Sportage Grand here in the US. They offer a V6 and a stretched wheelbase in Brazil. Go figure, you don't think Americans want those?

I own a 99 CRV with 38,000 miles on it. At 36,076 (right out of warranty!) the "check engine" light came on and the car stalled, restarted, stalled, etc. Got it to Honda service and was told the computer indicated it needed a new O2 analyzer which I had them install. Drove it two weeks and the engine light came on again. This time I was told it could be the gas, humidity, valves too tight, etc. They said this happens all the time. Today it's back at Honda.."check engine light" again...has anyone else had this happen? Oil changes have always been done on time, tune-up @ 35,000 miles, etc. Any suggestions? Thanks..Sheila
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I think they actually design things to fail at the end of your warranty. It's just Murphy's Law.

O2 sensors, if that's what he meant, are really a serviceable item that some people replace at the 30k mile service. That's no biggie.

You can blame ODBII for the check engine lights. Emissions controls are tight, so any tiny variation triggers the light, even a loose gas cap. I'm not sure if yours can be reset somehow - perhaps the regulars here can help you.

  • scnamescname Member Posts: 296
Isn't that part of the emission system? Emission systems are mandated by law manufacturer's responsibility for how many years I forgot, much longer than your vehicle warranty.

OK - I've decided on buying an EX, and even picked out color preferences. I cannot decide whether to go for standard or automatic transmission.

This big plus for standard is the pep in acceleration (especially for interstate on-ramps). But how good is the Honda clutch? I've needed to replace the clutch in my F-150 every 50,000 miles or so. The clutch in my old Plymouth Horizon and Fiats were even more temperamental.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
my experience with Honda clutches over the years, on Accords and Civics, has been very good. I don't think it's an issue I would worry about. If I were towing, that would be a different issue. However, I doubt you're considering a CRV for that.

I am considering the CR-V, among others in the small SUV's and I heard that a New CR-V was to be introduced to the Dealers in late August or September. Does anyone have any photos or know of any sites to see shots and read some specs for this new model?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
varmit: time for your spy pics of that CR-V designer...

Come on Varmit, what's the latest news on the new CR-V?!!
  • dudkadudka Member Posts: 451
i have considered 5 spd cr-v, after i test drove it, i didn't like the roughness. the engine sounded very rough and suspension seemed to bee too stiff. also i didn't like the interior color, then i asked to test drive an SE, and i was sure i wanted that. for $1500 more i got leather and auto, plus am/fm/cd/cassette. i thought it was worth it.
as far as honda clutches, they have lasted some people over 200 000 miles.
  • varmitvarmit Member Posts: 1,125
Every time I go away for a few days, I come back to find a comparison debate about the CR-V vs some other vehicle. This time it's Honda vs. Acura!

The HR-V looks like an EV to me. It would make a good hybrid.

These are the most realistic looking spy sketches we've seen to date. Keep in mind they are just shetches, though.

As for information, you'll have to wait. You can probably be sure that the CR-V will get the same treatment as the new Civic (trim levels should be about the same, mac struts, stiffer chassis, better crash test results,...). Look for a variant of the 2.0 i-VTEC engine under the hood. How big is anyone's guess.

Dudka - There are no suspension or engine differences between the SE and other models. Your experience with the 5 speed may have been simply over-inflated tires, or something.

Pros for the 5 speed - More pep, great gear box feel (for an SUV), and better mpg (I average over 25 for mixed driving). Cons would be - Higher RPMs at highway speeds (slightly more noise) and, of course, you've got to row your own gears.

My seats fold pretty flat in both directions. :-)

Someone mentioned getting the half clear tail lights to help with appearances. I recommend the all red ones, myself. A GoongalaGoonga sticker also helps.

  • beatfarmerbeatfarmer Member Posts: 244
A very common cause for the CEL to come on is by not tightening the gas cap enough (three clicks) when filling the tank.

I'd say more, but I feel sleepy.
  • diploiddiploid Member Posts: 2,286
Would be fine. just leave out the tacky amber and actually have ALL the red lights light up at night (instead of having a row of red light but only one section liight up when the lights turn on, like on the current model).

has anyone tried the rear ground mirror
    from autodynamic.com ???

where else can i buy them ground mirror?

    i'm really interested because city-parking
requires skill and excellent distance judgement.
i want to learn how to get out of a 1" space
    between front/rear bumpers... =)
  • varmitvarmit Member Posts: 1,125
Might I suggest a pry bar?

Sorry. I haven't tried the ground mirror. You might try the ad pages of C&D, MT, or R&T for retailers other than Autodynamic.com. I don't recall seeing them on any other web distributer's list.
Good luck. And let us know how it works out.

I am in the market for a new CRV. My current car runs fine, so I don't mind waiting for a little longer. My questions is: how much of a difference will it make between now and September? Both in terms of pricing and availabity. The spy picture looks neat, but I don't think it is any prettier than the current one ;-)
  • snowchiefsnowchief Member Posts: 16
Everything in this site related to the new CR-V is pure speculation. Honda does a masterful job of not leaking any information about their new vehicles. The new CR-V will almost definitely be on the new Civic platform and it's very likely that it will be slightly larger and have slightly more power. Chances are that you'll be able to score a better deal in the next couple of months on the outgoing model than you will when the new one hits the lots (unless it's a bomb... doubtful). Plus, while I'd love to see the new CR-V in late September, I will not be at all surprised to not see it until late October.
  • beatfarmerbeatfarmer Member Posts: 244
wait. You can then pick between the new one of the old one. The changes will be evolutionary, not revolutionary. My guess is there will still be enough '01 available that if you want one, you could get one.
  • lacarguylacarguy Member Posts: 9
I know everyone here knows that the new CRV will be here in a couple of months. Which of course is based on the Honda Civic. What about the Honda SUV based on the Honda Accord. Any timetable, specs, rumors about it's arrival. I know the Accord will be revised next year as a 2003 model. And I know a SUV based on the Honda platform is coming. I just wanted some more details.
  • tianctianc Member Posts: 13
I guess I will wait for another two months... Yes, I have actually already decided to go for the current model, it is just a matter of the best time to buy before all of them (2001 model) are gone. Does any of you know whether EX trim has the back-seat-fold-flat feature (trying to save some motel $$$ here ;-D)? thanks so much! I love this message board!
  • varmitvarmit Member Posts: 1,125
LAcarguy - Honda has the Passport contract through the 2002 model year. I'd guess that the Honda version of the MDX will show up sometime in Summer or Fall of 2002 as a 2003 model. Like the Acura MDX, it'll be based on the Odyssey platform (which is a modified Accord platform).

Tianc - Both the EX and SE models have the folding bed feature. Only the LX model does not. The design was intended for use as a bed, but it also makes a great way to cart around long items.

Take a look at this page.

What presure do you run in your CRV? My wifes 01 had 40 psi from the dealer.I let them down to 28psi. I need to buy a good guage, thinking digital any thoughts?
  • diploiddiploid Member Posts: 2,286
like varmit said, the Honda SUV will be like the Acura MDX.

But if you want to see something derived from the Accord, here's a link to the Honda Avancier. It's a wagon, but from one angle, it looks like a lowered RX300.

Tomf11 - I run mine on the same 28psi. I've never needed anything other than the typical pen style gauge. Though you do have to oil and excercise the piston as Dchopp recommends.

I am looking at a 1997 CR-V with 69,000 miles - my wife thinks that is too many miles to consider this vehicle. It is in excellent mechanical & cosmetic shape. Price is $10,138 with my trade in (1992 Accord Lx sedan, 102,900, still runs great, AC runs cold then hot, used car manager said it needed a new cv joint right front)
If anybody has a high mileage CR-V - how is it holding up? Any comments on this deal?
(also if anybody knows how much it is to repair the cv joint please let me know.
  • beatfarmerbeatfarmer Member Posts: 244
I'm just hitting 30k with my '99. But a fellow named Lee Hutchins who post over at the CR-V info exchange has over 170,000 on his '97. He done regular maintance but has had to replace a leaking rear shock and a torn CV boot (his fault on the boot).

  • snowchiefsnowchief Member Posts: 16
I believe that the CR-V is the most reliable vehicle that Honda has ever made (based on warranty work). Therefore, I would not think twice about buying a CR-V with 69,000 miles.
  • crvenvycrvenvy Member Posts: 7
I have a 91 Honda Civic Si with 150K miles on it, and the clutch has never given me any problems. Actually I have been the only owner and the only major repairs I have had to have done to it was change the CV joint. Honda reliability is second to none.

Just took a 420 mile round trip with my '99 EX and managed 28.96 MPG - aw heck, with it that close, let's just say I got 29MPG!! That's my best yet on this regular trip we make. I've found that if I travel on 55MPH state highways as opposed to 65MPH Interstates I get better MPG plus of course better scenery and more frequent bathroom stop opportunities. I was striving to make the whole trip on one tank but stopped for gas at 362 miles since the fuel light starting coming on. This trip is mostly highway, and it was ideal weather for travel. A few small towns to slow down through of course. During the week with mostly city driving I'm getting 23MPG. I'm just thrilled with CRV going into my 3rd year with it now and just turning 30K miles. I'll be looking to replace my 10 year old Civic with a new Odyssey next year and have been spending time on that board mostly so not sure if MPG comes up much here. What are others getting?
  • dudkadudka Member Posts: 451
i had my cr-v serviced for the first time this past weekend. well, they would not adjust the pedals for me. the service manager said they were not adjustable, i will have to get a helms manual and see for my self if it is. and if it is then i will have to show him how to do it. my car is still pulling to the right, even though i have it mentioned on the invoice. they just adjusted tire pressure. i will have to go to a different honda dealer, i guess.
i think i do understand why so many cr-v's are pulling to the right. these are made in japan, and they drive on the left side of the road. with the roads being designed to have 2-3 degree slope to let the water run off the road surface to the side, i think when they make a car in japan they set it so it drives straight on the left side. when we drive on the right side the slope adds to the right pull. once again this is just a speculation. any thoughts?
  • sluglineslugline Member Posts: 391
The problem with the made-in-Japan theory is that some dealers have told customers that the slight PTTR is a "safety feature" that keeps the car from going into oncoming traffic in the event of a driver dozing off, for example. If that was the case, then they would have to engineer Pull To The Left into the Japanese cars, and that just sounds too silly to me.
  • barnonebarnone Member Posts: 118
i went to the dealer and they claimed that the
front wheel tire presures were way off.

would it be good for me to have the alignment
checked by a non-dealer then compare the results
w/ the owner's manual... then if there is a
significant difference, make the dealer fix the
    alignment referring to the warranty?

or am i not making any sense?
  • varmitvarmit Member Posts: 1,125
Barnone - Don't worry. Making sense is not a requirement on these boards.
I'd take the alignment specs posted in the fixes and modifications thread and try another mechanic. Even if it's just a different dealer.

I have a 2000 CRV, black. Anyone having troubles with paint blistering on the hood? Any known recalls? I've only had the car for 1 year and I have a dime size rust spot starting. Have a call into the dealer now. Thanks.
  • beatfarmerbeatfarmer Member Posts: 244
I haven't heard of anyone with blistering paint. Just some complaints about toughness (ie resistance to scratching). Have the dealer look at it right away. Was it possible for something external to cause the damage, like bird droppings?

In any case, get it looked at right away.
  • scnamescname Member Posts: 296
Anyone hearing Honda has sent advertising literature on 02 CRV to its dealers in Japan, read in a message board 02 ad campaign starts Aug 1 over there.
