were all H-6s. There was, however, a short-lived 912, that was was an H-4. It was the 911, minus the 6-cylinder engine, instead using the engine from the old 356B.
The were both 4 and 6 cylinder 914s. The 6-cylinder model was sold as a Porsche, and the 4 was sold as a VW, and using a VW (not Porsche) H-4.
Congratulation! Rebecca - Very nice pictures! The blue color really looks good. My 2 choices are blue and silver. We pick silver. My wife's current car is dark metallic green, so she prefers a lighter color this time. Beside, silver probably hides dirt better. I don't have to wash the car as much alex17 - May I ask you when did you place your order with Mark Roberts? I ordered my silver AT EX from Mark Roberts on Nov 2. I am still waiting I am from Dallas too. Did you fly out there and drove back?
as an early christmas present for me and my family. I added the foglights, all season floor mats, cargo cover, and front splash guards. Later I may add roof rack, hard spare tire cover, cargo mat. I got the silver because I didn't care for the tan interior and my other Honda is a black Accord, so I wanted a lighter color than the black or blue offered. Its nice to have at least one car that doesn't show all of the dirt that accumulates.
I was wondering if the Silver color on the '02 is the same as on the 1st generation CR-V. If so, is there a body colored hard spare tire cover that will match the '02 and fit? I also was wondering if you could add seat heaters without adding leather? It seems like everyone who adds heated seats usually also does aftermarket leather. Varmit, didn't you get heated seats on your '99?
I wish we could get those body colored bumpers and the matching spare tire cover(instead of that cheap black vinyl one) in the US. I guess Honda won't give that to us until they start selling a SE edition here.
Congratulation! I was hoping to get the CR-V I order before Christmas as a Christmas gift for my wife, but I guess it is not going to happen Well, at least the accessories for my new CR-V I ordered from HandA will arrive today. According to Edmunds, the 1st gen changed from Sebring Silver to Satin Silver on 01'. The 02' also has Satin Silver, so I supposed it is the same as the silver in 01'. HandA does have a hard cover in Satin Silver.
For what it's worth, when I ordered my '02 EX last month, I was told the silver and black colors (at least those two, those two were the only ones I was interested in) were different on the '02 from what was on the '01. I eventually picked the silver and love it. Looking now at older CR-V's on the road (and I can't say for sure if they are '01 or earlier), the '02 silver seems brighter or more metallic looking.
Rburnard - I saw your pics. Ditto the painted bumpers. I thought I commented at the CR-V IX. If not, it looks great!
Colors - I'll have to double check, but I thought the '02 was using the Satin Silver. The spare tire chould be the same as the '01 model. It is actually a slightly darker silver than the earlier color. My '99 is a Sebring Silver.
For anyone who might be interested... In the USA, we never got a Sebring Silver SE model. Therefore US dealers don't have a matching spare cover. However, Canada had a Sebring Silver LE (same as the SE) and they have the corect color for the hard spare.
I forgot who asked, but, yes, I do have heated leather seats (and they work quite well, thank you). You can install the heaters without also getting leather. In fact it's easier to install. Cloth seats don't "imprint" the way that leather does. With leather seats you have to make sure that the edges are perfectly smooth, otherwise you end up with something similar to the ring that forms on most any college kid's wallet.
Got to drive a chianti red 2002 CR-V EX yesterday. I am a real Honda fan (own 2 Accords and three dirt bikes) but yet again, the seating position is no good for my height (6'8). The seat could go back an extra 2 inches. It seems like an ongoing theme with all the new Hondas since '98. I did not particularly like the wrong-side swinging rear door and the 4-wheel drive system either. When gassing it in a snowy curve, it first plows then the rear wheels kick in to push you out further. The system must be adequate to pull out of snow banks, but that's about it. Oh, and the unit I drove had Michelin Alpins on it. There were some rattles coming from the front side door panel too. I guess I'll pass. I was somewhat hoping to like it...
If you go the Altima route, check out the Maxima. The Max is going for near invoice for almost the same car. Altima has a better suspension, Max has a nicer interior and more headroom in the rear. CR had a high reliability for the 2001 Max, bested only by a few other vehicles, of which the 2001 CR-V was one of them. I did not like the premium fuel requirement and the turning radius, I have to wiggle into our garage.
Hi all, I've been lurking in this discussion group as I tried to decide what new SUV I should get. I'm pretty much sold on getting a 5spd EX (and after seeing Rebecca's pics, I'm sold on the blue color). Howver, local dealers have been quoting MSRP+2k (even thru the internet). Somebody mentioned a Dalles dealership that sells at invoice+700. However, they are pre-ordered till March. I'd be willing to pay up to MSRP but no such luck around here. Even desperate enough to buy the V on our trip down to Oakland over New Years and then drive it back up. Local dealers say prices wont be coming down for a long while and I've been checking inventories of all the dealers in Washington and Oregon. There really aren't that many staying on the lots out here. Should I just can the search till spring? Reasonable dealers in Oakland? Any help appreciated.
Tragic - Try e-mailing if you haven't already. Sometimes the dealers will sell low if you make it very easy for them. Send out a bunch of messages and let them know that they are competing for your business.
Just got thru trying that route (e-mailed 12 dealers, 6 responses) ... I heard of earlier success stories, but there must be a shortage of V's out here in the northwest. Best "internet" price quoted me from those 6 responses was MSRP+1000. I can only guess that the prices you all are seeing in the South and midwest must imply a larger supply.
Yes, we are hearing lot's about the slow response of the CRV RT4WD in snow. The Saturn Vue is even worse. The Escape is as bad in "Auto" and in "On" it is erratic during cornering. These systems were not design to give the on-road constant traction properties that you would get in a Subaru, Audi, VW, Volvo, MDX, Lexus or even Liberty. The Rav-4 is somewhere in the middle.
I am hearing some very interesting and intiguing tidbits of info on the 2003 Forester. Stay tuned.
About 6 weeks ago a salesperson at the Everett dealership told me he expected 02 CRV's could be going for a few hundred over invoice by the end of the year due to the large Boeing layoffs in that area. I guess his crystal ball isn't working very well. If it were me, I would wait a little bit longer for the frenzy to die down (my wife wants one to), I've never had to pay more than $500 over invoice for a Honda or Acura in the NW, even when the Accords were hot 4 years ago. Eric
I have no problem purchasing a 4 cylinder vehicle. I mentioned that the 6 cylinder Vue engine was smooth b/c I once test drove a 6 cylinder Sante Fe and it was NOT smooth at all. Plus, there was a lot of engine noise and a definite lag between hitting the gas and the vehicle responding.
I had no problems w/ the CR-V. It drove pretty well. I'm just not completely sold. Things I don't like on the CR-V are done well on the VUE & vice-versa.
Took delivery of our Eternal Blue CR-V EX 4WD today. It will be a Christmas present for my wife. Here in Chicago, prices are at MSRP. Some dealers are adding some BS package as added profit. I did get good deals on the options I selected: fogs, running boards, cargo cover, front mud guards, and the stain less steel interior, ALL above options added for $720. So the cost with these options was $23,460.00. I made a deposit on Dec. 6. Muller Honda in Highland Park, IL; I dealt with Charles Chamberlain.
I emailed several Bay area dealers and the lowest I found was $700 under MSRP. However, Yuba City Honda accepted my email offer of $500 over invoice. I ended up buying from Wittmeier Honda in Chico because they had the blue EX on its way for the same price. The only thing is both Yuba City and Chico are off of Highway 99, not I5, so they would be a bit out of your way if you were headed to Oakland.
Also, I don't know how hard it is to buy out of state.
I ordered an '02 EX for $1,000 below MSRP from a dealer near Houston, TX. Regional differences in pricing is interesting. I don't think it is due to a larger supply here. The dealer is ordering mine, and from what I can tell there is not a dealer within a three hour drive who has the car I ordered. The dealership nearest to me has no CRV's in stock at present. I am thankful I found a dealer willing to give me a good price but I've no idea why - I know it is not my charm or good looks.
Thanks to all who responded about pricing experiences. I think the bottom line is the car I have runs fine now. Sometimes I stare at these pictures and brochures and reviews and convince myself I NEED to have that V now. Truth be told, I can wait till things calm down up here. Please keep us all posted on your experiences, good and bad.
I placed my order that week also. But I think the reason I got mine so soon was that it was already headed to the dealership and no-one had purchased it yet. I originally wanted Blue or Silver, but he told me that for those colors I would have to wait 3 weeks more for the next shipment. But he had a red one confirmed and available so I took that one. The seatbelt thing delayed my V by 2 weeks.
The tan interior really isn't that bad in the EX trim. I would have preferred the black but, I couldn;t wait another 6 weeks to get it.
Tragic: there is some thinking that this hot surge of car-buying is propped up by unsustainable financing and rebate offers, thus the whole thing might be cannibalizing potential future sales. "I was gonna buy in the summer of '02, but I didn't want to miss out on these deals." Even if Honda is not in the same desperate game to artificially boost current sales, CRV prices might droop if the whole market begins to sag around Labor Day. You're prolly smart to wait.
I agree the lighter colors "wear" dirt better;however, maybe the fact that dirt shows itself more on dark colors reminds owners to wash their cars more frequenly thereby helping to keep their finishes in better shape?
Question: After a few years will the black cladding collect dirt, wax, age etc. and look like a different color on the black color car than it does when new?
I just saw a Mohave Mist colored CVR on another site. It has body colored bumpers, cladding etc. It is one nice looking vehicle. Unfortunately it is only available in Canada. For those of you with Honda experience. How long do you think before this is offered in a U.S. model??
Similarly, it is clear the tan interior has turned many away from their first choice vehicle. Assuming Honda knows this, is it likely they will change it and/or offer the dark interior in more models in the near future or is this a futile hope until their next redisgn happens?
Cladding generally doesn't fade with age. Dirt and wax can be cleaned out of the plastic using a slightly rough sponge (like those bug and tar removers) and some cleaning solution. I often clean mine immediately after waxing.
The SE model came out in the USA after three years of sales in this market. The interior was tweaked (new cloth) after being on sale for two years. FWIW, I don't think that the tan color has turned that many people away. Other changes can be checked here.
Just went thru 1000 total miles on a trip to Jarret, Va and back on some pretty back country roads to the Nottaway River and dinner at the Virginia Diner. 215 miles round trip with just a short detour on a couple of logging roads (no real ruts just fun little dirt roads) and the good news is 26.9 mpg. 02 5spd EX. This was with the wife and 2 kids and they had a good time and the little one, 4 feel asleep on the rear armrest.
I really like the brown interior but to each his own.
What did you hear about the 2003 Forester? Please share.
I have never noticed any of the cladding on earlier CR-Vs that faded or otherwise discolored. The stuff on my Forester is like Teflon, you gotta love how practical it is.
Hi folks..if it will help anyone out there reading this. Marin Honda in Corte Madera CA said prices are $1200 over MSRP for the 2002 Honda CRV. They have none to sell and will take only a waiting list with a $500.00 deposit. Manly Honda in Santa Rosa, CA www.manlyauto.com 707-535-1127 just sold us a Silver EX 5 speed for $21,400.00 plus destination fee of $440.00. They were very straight-forward to deal with..we offered the percent over their cost and it was a done deal. Car to be delivered in one week.
Does anyone know the 178.4 inch listed length for CRV include the rear mounted spare tire? The Toyota Highlander is 184.4 but does not have the spare tire, yet seems more than 6 inches longer than the CRV, which leads me to believe the length in the specs of the CRV includes the spare tire. Can someone verify this?
Sounds like publishing phone numbers violates some sort of Edmunds policy, but I have trouble accepting that it's because there is "no way of verifying their accuracy."
It's easy to verify a phone number; you call the number. There's lots of information exchanged here, almost all of it useful, though mostly unverified. For example, most of the pricing info is unverified, but I choose to accept most of it as accurate. I'm guessing that when I do buy my next vehicle, whether a CRV or something else, what I've learned here will be worth at least $1000.00.
So, thanks for all the great info, and Merry Christmas to you all.
Why did Honda crank the price up some much in Canada for this thing? I was going to trade but my 'friend' and neighbour wanted to give me auction price for my 2000 CR-V. He ain't going to be happy when I switch brands.
I think the total length does include the spare tire. In Canada the EX-leather model comes with the hard spare tire cover and is listed as fractionally longer than the other models.
Wang - I've been told that the overall length includes the spare tire bracket, but not the actual tire. Don't ask me why.
This was questioned back when a number of magazines remarked on the fact that the first gen CR-V is "bigger" than the Escape (though the Escape is larger in every dimension except length).
got it about the phone numbers...just trying to pass along information tho'. It really helped me out with knowing how to price my offer to the dealer by reading here first. I knew upfront that some dealers were going to talk prices over MSRP..(which I would always refuse to pay--I can WAIT til demand goes down. No car to me is worth paying over MSRP for). I learned here to go with between 500 to 700 over invoice and to pay no more than that for the 02 CRV EX. Also wanted to say that the 02 CRV is a HUGE improvement over the 01. I ordered the 5 spd which they've made much sportier and with the improved engine, it really has plenty of torque and is fun to drive. I found the 01 CRV like an "old lady car." No offense to older ladies..I'm pushing "old" myself.
Guess you didn't read my or some others posts about prices in Chicago (hint: there's a huge helpful post from someone a couple weeks back). It's funny how they will get you to think it can't be had for less than MSRP when they probably just sold one for less. Guess it doesn't matter as long as you are happy.
I agree with you... somewhat. I believe the EX is loaded with standard equipment, more than I've see on other vehicles. However, I have issues with the equipment standard on the LX and EX. Why aren't ABS and privacy glass options on either incarnation of the LX? What's up with not having a driver's right armrest on 5-speeds? Why isn't some of the features on the EX optional? I want ABS, but do not necessarily want or need a 6 CD changer, a sunroof, or alloy wheels.
Trying to make a decision on which SUV to get is really beginning to get to me. I have so many issues with both the CR-V and the VUE that I'm starting to believe I won't be happy with either one.
One of the reasons why Hondas are so reliable is the fact that they only come in two flavors. This sales strategy also allows Honda to be more competitive with their prices. It costs less to manufacture the cars if they are all the same. Toyota goes the other route. They allow you to build the car with almost exactly what you want. However, they are earning a reputation for the "nickle and dime" approach.
As for the accessory fogs and such, Honda does this so that their dealers can make a profit installing add-ons. If the CR-V came with completely loaded, the dealers would have to do two undesirable things. First, they would have to raise the base price of the vehicle (never a good idea). Second, they would have to start selling cheap and useless add-ons rather than the Honda approved stuff. The only extra profits they'd have would be from selling Honda t-shirts and keychains.
From the CR-V IX. This accompanied a story from the guy who walked away from it. He got broadsided by a van doing 40mph. The whole story is available over there.
The roof racks look great -- not even the dealers in Ontario have been able to tell me what they were going to look like. 2 questions -- do they slide on the rails or is there a limited number of positions? When I looked at the new CR-V in the show room, it looked like there was a limited number of places for the cross beams to attach.
Second, how much did they cost? A local dealer mentioned about $500 Canadian, which seemed outrageous if all that is needed is the two cross beams.
Looks great -- I get to enjoy (?) an extended period of delayed gratification -- probably until the spring or early summer, when I will pick up a 2002, probably the EX.
The roof rack attaches only in the two places set in the rails on the roof. It doesn't move forward or backward. There are installation instructions over at HandAaccessories.com if you want to see how to do it. They are asking $249 (US) + shipping. I paid about $50 more than that to have them installed before I got the car. They are limited in their load capacity. It says right on the rack that it can only support 75 lbs. I think they look great on the car and it doesn't seem to affect wind noise much.
ABS should be standard on every Honda, no excuses. So should carpeted floor mats, which are basically on every car anyway, they just charge you extra for it.
I also wanted tinted windows, and ended up relying on the aftermarket for it. It should at least be an option on high-end models.
In reality, if Honda at least made ABS standard on the LX I think they would make a lot of people happy.

The were both 4 and 6 cylinder 914s. The 6-cylinder model was sold as a Porsche, and the 4 was sold as a VW, and using a VW (not Porsche) H-4.

I agree with juice, blue is the best color and I got it.
I don't miss the '98 anymore. Actually I saw it in the dealer's lot (they added $4800 to what I got for trade-in #@%%!!)
To those weighing options, I'd say go for it...
Happy holidays everyone!

I'm sure the aftermarket will offer spare covers. The tires are the same 205/70R15 size so the old ones ought to fit.

Honda ought to take another look at content levels, though. All four options you mentioned come standard in even a stripped Forester.
