Took delivery of my '02 CR-V last night. What a nice vehicle! Here's my initial impression. Pros: Nice height; firm seats; roomy; good handling; lots of storage. Cons: No auto-off headlights; radio could be placed a bit lower and sound better; child seat anchors are placed in a bit of a funky place; look of the seats (the odd patterns and vinyl on part of it). I'm just being picky about the cons. I bought the car, so that says something. The mini-ute category is getting a bit crowded these days, but in my opinion the V stands out as the best overall value - even if paying close to MSRP. I was looking at the Highlander - sort of a different class from the V - but pretty close. It's a nice quality SUV, but the price! - gulp. I really do like Toyota's, but I don't believe they are as good of a value for the $$ as the Honda. I made the right choice.
seems to be a trend now, putting the radio near eye-line and leaving the heat/ac controls lower.
I think the patterns are not the greatest, but should help hide stains or dirt. The vinyl serves a good purpose by covering high wear parts, so I like it. maybe not the look, but...
overall, I think it's a very well executed vehicle.
Has anyone added fender flares to their 2002 CR-V? It seems like every other mini-SUV offers them as an option, but I didn't see any on the Honda website. Also, has anyone added an outside temperature gauge/compass mirror to their CR-V? I wish Honda would offer more options like these, 16-inch wheels, etc.
I just replaced the Duelers on my 2000 EX with Michelin Harmony tires. The Harmony is (according to Michelin) supposed to be better at winter traction than the Xones. They are also $10 to $12 cheaper per tire. I like them so far (400 miles) because they are much quieter than the originals.
Hey, Honda! Do you like Canada more than the US (the U.S.)? I never thought I'd be jealous of Canada (just kidding for all of our Canadian neigbours). I just glanced through my V owners manual. The book includes items for Canadian models. So far, it looks like they get an outside temp. gauge; heated power mirrors; leather seats (with heaters!). What's up with that? The US has some cold clmates, too! I'm just jealous Canada. Leather would be very nice, though.
I don't like that little bit of vinyl on the seats either, and Subaru did the same thing with the new Forester. Why? If it's in direct sunlight, it'll burn you when you sit on it. Not to mention it doesn't look good on either vehicle.

I totally agree!!!! The color keyed body side cladding, heated mirrors, outside temp. guage, etc. IMHO, Honda sometimes seems to march to their own beat. While many people may disagree with this, I always felt that they don't always do a good job of listening to their customers. If you go back to the earlier Accords in the 1980's, it took Honda forever to finally add a stoage compartment in the center console. For years they just had a small plastic depression next to the parking brake while the Camry and others had already had storage consoles with arm rests for years. It seemed like it was rocket science for them to add one.
are located where you slide in and out of the seats, so those fabric areas dont' wear out as fast. I think it's a good idea for durability, and I guess the styling is growing on me.
There is a 'squeaking' noise above the drivers side visor - I've asked my dealer to check it out 2 times and get 'no problem' found. The headliner is not firm in this area. The passenger side is also not firm but seems to be more so than the driver's side. It seems to occur more when the weather is cooler. Has anyone had this and if so, what is it?
Keep in mind you can go to the aftermarket to get the stuff Honda doesn't offer from the factory. In fact I kind of like having something unique. Does Mito make a heated mirror for the CR-V?
varmint got seat heaters. Greg got bigger tires. You can get auto dimming mirrors that have a temp display. Any body shop will gladly paint your cladding.
The headliner seems like it does not have enough contact points to the roof as it goes toward the windshield. I don't know anything about designing cars, but I suspect that the headliner needs some room to expand/contract close to the windshield because of the heat/cold that would be more than farther back in the car. I never really paid much attention to the headliner in other cars I've owned to see how they are made. It can be very annoying. And will probably never be resolved.
I think your theory is right & I do not have a moonroof. Another factor might be the Thule rack. For the last 6 months I never heard that strange noise, then I removed my kayak saddles for a long trip without my kayak. This is when I began to notice the wind noise. The wind wraps around the racks differently enough that it can create this new noise. I will adjust the fairing to see if I can alter the turbulent wind pattern to get rid of the noise.
I suspect that Honda is waiting to add body-colored cladding for an SE model. If they put everything into the EX, what can they add when the design is four years old and needs refreshing? Simple upgrades like painted cladding, larger rims, tinted glass, leather seats, etc. are all ways of upgrading the car withour costing the customer (and manufacturer) huge amounts of money.
We put an ASC Model 750 moonroof in our car, and I saw the same exact roof in a CR-V - it looked great. They replace the entire headliner, and the roof is fairly big (17"x30"). One touch open/cose, programmable to close when you remove the key. Ours was $900, totally worth it IMO.
I have also been considering replacing the BF Goodrich tires on my CR-V. I did some researching on the Duelers H/L's, as it was frequently mention on this forum.
Then I saw the Yokohama Avid Touring on tirerack.com. Many claim that they were smooth and quiet, yet last long mileages. The downside was that they were passenger tires for cars and van, not SUV's. I figured that since I live in Southen Cali, highway driving is all I do. I'm not really worried about foul weather driving as there has been barely any rain this year.
The Yokohamas were much lower in price then the Duelers, so I chose the Yokohamas as my replacement tires. Unforturnately, I only gotten 5000 miles on the BF goodrich.
Well there are many benefits to living in Canada besides getting extra goodies on CR-Vs, but there are benefits to living elsewhere too.
Example: an excruciatingly small accessory item like door edge guards (retail $40 U.S. at handa-accessories) should cost only $60 Canadian. The cheapest we could get them was $98 Canadian from a local Honda dealer. And get this - there wasn't a bit of explanation about how to install them.

I had my first oil change at 5000 miles but am undecided about whether to have it done at 10000 or wait till 15000.I rarely drive in heavy commuter traffic and the suburban area is not what I consider severe especially in San Diego with a mild climate.I never keep a car for over 100000 miles.Of course as retirement nears that may change.
The Honda Owners manual defines what Honda means by "severe" conditions, which may differ from what you or I would consider severe. It's worth reading so you can make an informed choice.
Has anyone mounted a 235x70x15 on a 2002 CRV EX? I'm wondering if they would rub..... I'm not concerned with the spare tire problem with that size, just looking to get a lower RPM at speed. Thanks, Steve
I just replaced my original tires(BF Goodrich Touring TA's) after 46,000 miles with the Yokohama Aegis LS4 WS 's . Seem to be a bit smoother and less noisy, they were very reasonable in price($46/tire at TireRack). Hopefully will last. I know my 1998 CRV will last a long time!

Can an American purchase a CR-V direct from Canada? Or can a person go to Canada to buy one? What's the deal here?
you can buy a crv from canada, but you will have to change the speedo from metric to our standards. You should also know that HONDA will not warranty your car from canada.. but i guess you can buy a warranty from some type of insurance company to cover your car. But the question is it worth the time and extra money. your choice.

It's not Honda that won't honour the warranty, it's that Honda USA won't honor the warranty. Plus Honda Canada will penalize their dealers if they start selling lots of cars to people stateside I understand (penalize by cutting allotments, etc.), so you may have trouble finding a new one to buy to bring across the border.

how about how the a/c stays on mixed with the heat on certain settings, i thought i was doing something wrong until i read the owners manual. will this hurt gas milage?
Okay, it sounds silly, but I'm considering a rear-seat video system for my '02 V. I haven't had a chance to talk to our local retailer about doing this yet, so I thought I'd throw it out on this board to see if any one has, or anyone knows of installing a rear-seat videao system in a V. I'm thinking headrest mounted monitors and installing the player and FM modulator underneaath the driver seat. Any ideas ot experience on these?
I would imagine that having the A/C on degrades MPG a small amount. There is a programming sequence you can go through to permit you to manually turn off the A/C when you dont want it on. Maybe someone can post it. If you dont get a post, email me at rockycow@aol.com and I will search for it.
Wow, that was an eye opener! Guess I won't try to get one from Canada - will just have to enjoy my 03 EX, and then some day look forward to replacing it with the upgrades that will most likely come to the US in years ahead.
It's just that I'm giving up my Lexus GS400 for the CR-V. My husband wants to get away from driving a Suburban all the time, so he's taking the Lexus and I'm getting a new CR-V. I'll miss the climate control, heated seats, and leather, but fell in love with the '02 EX that our daughter got for college and think it will be a good transition for the occassional needs of the big Suburban. The all-wheel drive will be nice in this Iowa snow too.

...It's easier in the EU because they have a common economy and are using the same currency for the most part. It's more difficult to justify different price levels when it's euros as opposed to lire, francs, marks, ecsudos, drakmas, et al.
Until Canada is willing to give up it's economy and forever fall under the spell of the US dollar, I think there will always be an issue.
I hope that doesn't happen - I like loonies and toonies :-) Not to mention the boring currency we have in the States.

Wouldn't it just be easier if Honda made the U.S. version of the V with the same options as Canada? That way we wouldn't have need for an Economist to find ways around this. I have a gut feeling that another Board poster is right - Honda will probably offer a Special Edition with all the extra stuff we want. I'm thinking the Special Edition will most likely be also known as the Canadian Edition.
Traded in my 2001 CR-V for a new Miata in August. Love the Miata, and don't regret buying it. I just wish I could've had both. I guess all I really didn't like about the CR-V was the weak AC (black paint in Missouri), and noisy, underpowered engine. Handled better than my Accord. Sometimes I think I should've traded the Accord but it is waaay more comfy on long trips like the one I took to Florida this summer and I got "all the money" for the CRV EX($17,500 with 23,000 miles w/ AT). Maybe I'll try to find an old, cheaper used one for about $10,000 or so...
I installed one along with updated wiring harness.....directions were very straight forward...took about 4 hours working slow and reading directions ahead of time. You will have to drill some holes. Good luck, Sfs

For those who do not know it, the a/c in the CR-V/civic always comes on when the defrost is on. This we know will clear the moisture, but you can't turn off the A/C. To deactivate the automatic a/c feature on the 2002 CR-V/civic 2002. 1) Turn vehicle off. 2) Turn fan knob off. 3) Turn temperature knob all the way to the left (blue area). 4) Turn vent knob to panel only setting (next to a/c max). 5) Hold down both the air re circulation button and a/c button while starting the car. 6) Continue holding for 7 seconds until the air re circulation button stops flashing. Now the a/c button can be turned on or off.
To reactivate automatic a/c feature on 2002 CR-V 1) Turn vehicle off. 2) Turn fan knob off. 3) Turn temperature knob all the way to the left (blue area). 4) Turn vent knob all the way to the right (defrost position) 5) Hold down both the air re circulation button and a/c button while starting the car. 6) Continue holding for 7 seconds until the air re circulation button stops flashing.
Well guys, I could tell you that the trick for the a/c worked just fine on both cars cr-v and civic. Now in the mornings on my way to work to get rid of lil fog I could use the defog mode with the a/c (compressor) off without sacrificing mpg or fuel in that matter. Actually on step #5 you do not have to start the car you could just turn the key to II that is right before you energized the starter. Greetings from sunny Miami. v/r fig.

Finally, with respect to accessories, Handaccessories seems to be the cheapest online merchant for most aftermarket items. I've found them to be very helpful, as well.
Help, Please!!! I have been seriously shopping around for a small/midsized SUV and thought I had settled on a 2003 CR-V EX. Then I saw the Kia Sorento. Now I'm totally confused all over again. Can you guys help me sort out which would be better for me? I will probably never use the vehicle on tough, off-road terrain. More like trips to the beach, airport and mall with the kids. I like the Kia's V6 over the 4 but the CR-V is loaded with all the options I like. It beat the Pilot (in my opinion) because of all of the gadgets that are offered and the Pilot costs more. I just didn't feel it was worth the extra $. The Sorento seems to be in the middle of the two, price-wise. What do you think?
