I didn't understand your exact deal...hopefully you won't mind clarifying for me. Did you pay $28,522 + tax, license, etc. or did you pay $28,522 + tax, license, etc? Please let me know.

    Thanks.

Has anyone found a great dealer/price on a 4Runner in any of these states recently?
  • zsac09zsac09 Member Posts: 4
I recently bought a 2001 Limited in the Houston area. I emailed three dealers with the desired vehicle information and one followed up "vigorously." The other two did contact me but were reluctant to talk $$$ until I visited their place of business. I am 6'4" and found that the Limited with sunroof was just a bit too tight of a fit. The search was on for a Limited w/o sunroof. Apparently two were located in all of Texas.

The fleet salesman showed me the "invoice" price and took off the $2000 rebate and the deal was done. Keep in mind that this is Gulf States Toyota (distributor) and their invoice price may be different from other distributors.

MSRP was $35435, invoice was $32053 and purchase was for $30053 after deducting the $2K rebate. Taxes and fees brought the out the door price up to $32369 and I added the 7 year, 75000 mile extended warranty for $695 (a Toyotathon special).

Keep in mind that Gulf States adds a "distributor installed option" package for $1264 (invoice $895). This was on all Limiteds that I could get any information on. To avoid this you had to get a 2002 model and forget about the $2000 rebate. The only other options were door edge guards and a rear wind deflector. No rear heater (not an issue in Houston) and no 6 disc changer.

Included in the invoice price were several fees that added up to $1664. I don't think that we consumers generally get to see these (advertising, holdback, etc.). I wasn't particularly happy with these but didn't feel that they were very negotiable. I walked out after a lowball offer on my trade-in. They eventually upped the offer so I feel that I did get to at least dip into their holdback money.

Sorry....since everyone has different TTL costs, I just put the price for the vehicle and excluded those costs.... With those costs, it was $31,313.94 (to be exact - but that was AFTER the $1500 rebate from toyota....).

So, $28,522 + TTL (here it was something like 8.8% tax and $150 for registeration)...btw, 'here' means Bellevue, Wa. I bought from the Fleet Manager or Michael's Toyota (Darrold Baker). Not soliciting for him, just letting people know.

When I went in to look at Highlanders 2 months ago, he just tossed me the keys (didn't even know my name, license, etc.....had only talked to me for ~1 minute...literally). I liked that style so much, I went back when I decided that we would get a 4Runner. (he did the same thing for that one...just tossed me the keys and said see you later. It was nice that they are high volume dealer and were trying to make a 22car quota on Friday :) No hassles or anything. (We were care #16 at 2:30pm, so they could taste their bonuses)

I bought a 2001 4Runner over the weekend. What kind of gasoline I should use? Premium, mid or regular. It is a great SUV.
  • jeffjeffjeffjeff Member Posts: 54
Your 4Runner is made to handle 87 octane fuel. However, when I get my 4Runner within a few weeks or so, Im going to use 93 octane, because Im going to give it the best of everything. One question, what trim line did you purchase, SR5 or Limited and does the truck feel like it has plenty of power? How much did you pay, did you get any type of rebates? It looks like Im going to have to buy a 2002 model, because the options and features I want are hard to find. Do you have leather or cloth interior, which material do most people prefer? I like the feel of cloth, however leather looks more luxurious, what do most prefer, does anyone know? Im glad to hear you purchased a 4Runner, I hope it lasts for many years to come.

Can someone, anyone please tell me if the hood scoop serves any purpose on the SR5. I have heard many conflicting stories. I have heard that it is just for styling effects, and I have heard that it actually sucks in air during driving. I have looked at this feature up close on an SR5 and I have found that the area where the air is supposed to flow into looks sealed shut. If this is the case, then the scoop has no purpose. A Toyota rep told me that this scoop is for the supercharger if one opts to put one on which would increase the HP from 183 to 240. Is this correct, does anyone else have any info. on this. I must admit, that scoop adds a nice styling look to the SR5. I may look into the SR5 instead of the Limited for this reason and a few more things. I think the SR5 4Runner is the equivalent of an SE Camry or SE Maxima, is this correct, the "Sport Edition". Or, is it that the SR5 is the equivalent of a Camry LE compared to an XLE or Maxima GXE compared to the GLE? Have I confused you all? Basically, I just would like to be reassured that the SR5 is not a step down from the Limited, but a different type of truck, a sportier version. What type of extra sport options does the SR5 model have that the Limited doesn't, anyone know? Let me tell you though, this truck has got to be one of the most best looking SUV's out there, it just looks PERFECT! I think this truck has reached its true maturity level and can't get any better looking than it is now, what do you all think?

This reply is to fourrunner and jeffjeff. True, the 4Runner is made for 87 octane . . . at sea level. Here in Colorado, you can run it at 85 with no problems - the dealer even says so. See post number 375 for a more detailed explanation.

As for 93 octane being "the best," it doesn't have anything your engine needs that 87 octane doesn't have. They put the same detergent additives in all "flavors" of gas. The higher the octane, the more expensive the fuel. I don't know, though, if it's actually more expensive to manufacture. I'm sure that your favorite oil company would be glad to sell you their most expensive product.

Using gas with a higher octane rating than that required by the engine typically doesn't improve mileage, and in some cases actually decreases it. If you install a supercharger, you will need to use higher octane fuel than you do with a stock 4Runner. That's because the principle of a supercharger or turbocharger is to increase compression, which in turn gets more fuel-air mixture into the cylinder on each intake stroke.

    Dbabble,
What you wrote does make alot of sense. The reason I said what I said was because of a personal experience that happened to my 89 Camry. During acceleration, I would hear a noise, the so called pinging, that low sort of ticking sound that I didn't like. So, instead of continually using 87 octane, I went up to 93 octane. Now I have been using this fuel for over 1.5 years now and I have never heard that pinging sound again. As far as gas mileage goes, I really don't notice a difference, its about the same, perhaps slightly less, but I'd rather deal with that then hear that pinging noise during acceleration. But for the 4Runners, I know the engine is built differently and you probably won't hear that pinging noise by using 87 octane. Man, I love my 89 Camry, but I love those 4Runners as well. I can't take this any more, Im getting a 4Runner. So what if I have to have a monthly payment, Im sure it will be worth it. I would feel a whole lot safer in this SUV than in my 89 Camry as well. There are so many people out there who don't need to be driving. Its so scary these days even getting on the road, you never know who might run into you. Be safe on the roads everyone, and please, please, pay attention at all times. I wish the guy that slammed into the back of my Camry paid attention, that idiot, I hate him for that. My Camry hadn't been through anything until that accident 2 months ago. I was just sitting at a red light minding my business and what do you know, he smashed right into the back of my car. He says his brakes locked up, but I have a hard time believing that one, I think he was just not paying attention. Well, thats all for now.

I bought 2001 SR5 with sport package, running board, sunroof, convenient package and rear heater. The color is black. It has the color and options we wanted (no more, no less). It does not have leather but the sport seat is very comfortable. The sport package is real nice. The MRSP was $30955 and I got for around $25300 after more than one hour negotiation. I was so tired after that and I am not sure it is worth for the effort. In S. California, one dealer in LA put an add over the weekend saying all the SR5 in stock would be discounted by $6000 (including 1500 rebate). I did not go there since it was 50 mile away AND "through LA traffic". I got from a dealer closer to my home. My price was after rebate. You need to add Tax etc. to that price. I still think Pathfinder is more powerful but I can not give up the reliability for power. I think 4Ruuner is pwoerful enough. I will try both 87 and 93 octane to see there is any difference. Anyone else has comment about fuel type? By the way, the rebate ends today.
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
The scoop is for looks only. Absolutely nothing else.
  • fourrunnerfourrunner Member Posts: 17
It does make SR5 look nicer. This was one reason we sticked to SR5 with sport package. Nevertheless, my kid thinks it is no big deal.
  • suvshopper4suvshopper4 Member Posts: 1,110
jeffjeff: I've heard of other people with aging engines that had to move up in octane to stop the pinging, like you with your '89 Camry. Other than that though, I agree with others, save your money and only use the octane that is required, unless you can detect a significant improvement (performance or mileage) using the higher-priced gas.
Good luck getting your 4Runner. There are real good deals on them lately. Nice looking trucks, too.
  • cityscapex5cityscapex5 Member Posts: 14
i like the other extra's in the sport package but i opted for a plain jane SR5 cause as Edmunds sez - and i quote, the hood scoop looks like a "rhinoplasty (nose job) gone horribly wrong."
  • jf01jf01 Member Posts: 88
I think the hood scoop makes the 4Runner look a bit flashier, a bit more aggressive, a bit more sporty. I would not want to have one simply because of the fact that it is nonfunctional. Maybe if Toyota developed a "RamJet" sort of intake and squeezed a few more horsepower from it...
  • fourrunnerfourrunner Member Posts: 17
I agreed with jf01. Nevertheless, it is personal preference. It is not a big deal. The key is I am very happy with what I bought based on past four days.

I bought a 2001 Toyota 4 Runner with the new VSC feature. So far it has been at the dealer 2 times because the VSC and Check engine lights come on for no apparent reason. The dealer does not know why this is happening and I have less than 2000 miles. Has anyone else encountered this problem and if so has it been fixed?
  • suvshopper4suvshopper4 Member Posts: 1,110
Another Toyota owner (of an '01 RAV4) said that his CEL came on because of a faulty read, where the catalytic converter was sending a normal message that the 'brain' was reading as excessive, when it was actually within tolerances. I'm afraid I can't be more technical in my explanation than this.

And I figure you know to check that the gas cap is on tight (3 clicks) after a fill-up, so I won't even mention that...

    Good luck.

My 4 runner is a little over 1 year, and has a water leak under the carpet on the passenger side. It's been to the dealership twice, and today I took it for a ride in the rain. Again under the mat it is wet. The dealership keeps telling me it is a seal around the wheel well. They replaced the padding, but not the carpet. Stong smell of mold now. Any suggestions from anyone?

Does anyone know how to turn off the DRL's on a 2000 4 Runner? I tried the parking brake idea and it doesnt work. The dealer wants to install a switch for $175. NOT.
    Please Help. Thanks.

Maybe Cliffy knows, other than an additional front skid plate (which you can see from the front) and different styling in the cloth seats, what else if different in the 2002 vs 2001? Anyone notice other items?

I'm looking for some advice on changing the power antenna myself on a 1997 Toyota 4Runner SR5 2WD. The motor on the antenna has gone bad 4 years to the day I acquired this vehicle. Has anyone replaced this themselves and what is involved?
    Thanks,

The next 4Runner is said to be reduced in price to compete with the Xterra. I know, I know, the 4Runner is in the class of the Pathfinder, but as the PAthfinder gets a bit bigger, the 4Runner is rumored to be "downgrading".

    What a disappointment...
  • scnamescname Member Posts: 296
Toyota has too many large SUVs, the Highlander is cannibalizing 4runner's market. Toyota does have a void in size and price between Rav4 and Highlander.
Moving the 4runner to Xterra, Liberty and to some extent Escape Tribute and 02CRV segment makes sense.

I have a 2001 SR5 (which I love) and want to mount a set of PIAA driving lights for off-roading and driving on dark country roads. I don't
want a full front end brush bar system. Instead, I want something similar
to the Westin Safari bar that is small and just to mount lights - not to
stop a Moose. ;-) (Unfortunately, Westin doesn't make a mounting bracket for
the 4Runner.) Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

I installed a Smittybuilt stainless steel Outland Sport bumper guard on my 2001,for the same reasons.I looked around and Jaos makes a beautiful one but cost too much for my budget. You can mount up to 6 lights on the Smittybuilt if you want.Installs in about 2 hours only because I had to drop the skid plate and bend it just a little. You mount it where your tow hooks are.To me it looks different,it shines all the time and the price was right.
  • jf01jf01 Member Posts: 88
Did you order the Outland Sport bumper guard from performance products? Do you know if it is the same one? So it does mount directly on the frame of the 4Runner, you have to move the skid plate? How difficult a time did you have moving the skid plate? Performance Products lists the stainless steel for $267.40, and the gloss black or textured matte black for $191. Is this comparable to what you paid? Thanks.
  • llslicellslice Member Posts: 15
Yep,Performance Products is selling the same one. It's funny some lady came up to me and said "Where'd you get that cool razorblade for your truck?"I bought mine back in May at Autostyles.com for $263.00 + $20.00 shipping.(no tax out of state)Performance has a good deal with the 15% off you'll save about 40 bucks.Jbubis the sale ends September 20,unless someones seen it at a better price. You have to unbolt the tow hooks, then mount the bumper guard hardware first before reintalling the towhooks with the longer bolts they supply you.Since both skid plates sort of support each other,I unbolted the one covering the tranny first and the front one will unbolt just as easy. You have to bend the front corners of the front skid plate slightly because the now lowered towhooks will rub against it,but not too much or when you reinstall the front plate it might be rubbing against you radiator. If you do decide to install one, make sure you'll got a long pipe for leverage because those towhook bolts are tight.

Can anyone advise me,I'm looking for a bug deflector. No screws,no 3M tape.I'm looking for one that uses hardware to mount it to the hood without drilling. If anyone knows of the namebrand or model please let me know. Thanks in advance.

I bought a 2002 4runner sr5 last week. I originally had a deal for a 2001, but there was a problem with it. So I saw a 2002 that just came off trailer. For $750 more I bought the 2002. The price on the option package is less money. There also feels like a difference in the seat or material. Except for a few minor differences its the same 4runner.

What all is included in the gold package? Anything besides the badges? I would assume it would be possible to remove the gold badges and replace with silver ones. Does anyone have any info on doing this? I'm looking to buy a used 4Runner with the gold package but I don't care for the gold.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks :)

I recently purchased a 2001 SR5. I also purchased an after market radio. When I was installing the radio I noticed a factory amp which was connected to the factory radio. I would like to use the after market radio with this factory amp, but I do not have a wiring harness or a wiring diagram. The wiring harness I received with the after market radio bypasses the factory amp.

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the factory amp or have some info on where I can get a wiring harness?

    Thanks.
  • jf01jf01 Member Posts: 88
You might try looking around Crutchfield.com. I know they have wiring harnesses for speakers. I think I remember a wiring harness for headunits that you just plug the headunit and amp into, but I'm not completely sure. Hope this helps (sorry, I never ordered any headunits from Crutchfield).

I'm pretty sure the gold package is just the exterior badging. You can swap out the silver for the gold with no problem. A dealer can get the gold package for you and if you buy from a dealer you might be able to get them to throw it in. FWIW they also have a nice black pearl badge package.

I bought a 2001 SR5 and I am still considering an extended warranty. Does anybody know the fair price? I need to get back to the dealer soon.
  • zsac09zsac09 Member Posts: 4
I bought a Limited on the 24th of August and the Seven Year, 75000 mile extended warranty was $695. This was a promo during Toyotathon and was supposedly $1000 off the regular price. $1700 does sound a bit high but I haven't looked recently.

    All,

    My 96 4runner's (108 K km) front vibrates.
Inner edges of the front tires are going faster than outer edges and center of the tire.
    Tires/front disk brakes/rotors are 28 K km old.

I did front wheels alignment - looking at the alignment report - only one wheel was corrected a little. Tires were rotated as well.

    I'll try wheel balancing.
    Any other suggestions?

I was at a party in Atlantic City over the weekend. This is an annual event for Central Atlantic Region Toyota dealers and all the big wigs from Toyota are there. During one portion of the evening, the regional president went through the list of what is coming down the pike. He confirmed that the Runner will be getting a V8 and will be larger. Unfortunately, he said this would be happening in the next 12 to 18 months.
  • akgakg Member Posts: 85
Thanks Cliffy, Glad you're on it..as usual. Did the guy say that it would be an exclusive V8, or with an optional V6? Any concepts on what it'll look like?
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
Every year, about 800 drunken salesmen traipse off to Atlantic City for a massive party and cash give away at "Cash Blast." During the party, the president of CAT gives us a pep talk which includes tid bits of info on future products. Very few real details ever come out of this. Here is the sum total of what was said:

    1. The Matrix will be out in January and will come with a 180 HP engine and 6 speed transmission.

    2. The next generation Corolla will be out in February and will be available in a truly sporty 2 door model similar to the old SR5.

    3. A new Sienna is on the way that will "Blow Honda and the others out of the water."

    4. Within 12 to 18 months we will have a larger V8 and longer wheel base for the Tundra. It will be a genuine full sized truck to give Ford a run for its money.

    5. Within 12 to 18 months, a new 4Runner will arrive that will be larger and have a V8 engine.

That's really the extent of what I learned and this wasn't because of too many gin and tonics. There just wasn't anything else said and this was not a Q&A session. It was just a pep talk.
  • peter78peter78 Member Posts: 284
It will be interesting to see what kind of role the 4Runner plays in the next 12 to 18 months. Right now it is priced higher than the Highlander, yet the street price is lower than the V6 Highlander and about the price of a similar equipped 4 cylinder Highlander. Maybe in a way it will compete with the smaller SUV's, with it's price as it is. I hope the sales don't fall too bad, it is such a wonderful SUV.

Opinions - if you were keeping a Runner for years (7 or more), so future tradein isn't a big deal. With all the discounts and rebates, would you get the 2001 over 2002. Doesn't look like much has changed, except a skid plate upfront and some fabric on the seats. thoughts from anyone?

I recently purchased a 2001 4Runner with factory running boards and want to get rid of them and put Manik Nerf bars on instead. Wanting to know if anyone is interested in them, or any info on a place I can take them to be sold. They are brand new and are imperial jade mica. (Dark Green) Looking forward to any info on this issue.
    Thanks
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
If you are the "buy and hold" type, the answer is easy. Get the biggest discount you can find on a 2001. Any dealer that has more than 4 or 5 left in stock is beginning to sweat and you should be able to steal one right now. Don't wait much longer though because supplies of the rebated and discounted 2001s are dwindling. It will be many months before you can get the same rebates and such on the 2002.
  • fourrunnerfourrunner Member Posts: 17
You can go to Toyota.com and search your local dealer. On their web site, many dealers post their new car inventory sometime even with great details such as color, MSRP, VIN # for both 2001 and 2002 4runner. Hope this will help.
  • akgakg Member Posts: 85
I know a week or two ago there was a 0% for 36 month that ended Sept. 4th. What are they offering now? Also, if you get a 4runner for about 500 over invoice, does that disqualify you from any factory rebates?
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
rebates and finance deals are regional. This month in the Central Atlantic Region, you get both a $1000 rebate plus 5.9% financing for 60 months. Other regions may be different. This has no impact on how much over and under the dealership decides to sell the car for.
  • hoss9hoss9 Member Posts: 9
Here in the Bay Area (Nor Cal), dealers are selling their 2001's at invoice, plus either $1500 off of that, or 2.9, 3.9, or 4.9% financing, depending on the length of the loan. I was going to buy a used one until I found out about these prices. Too good to pass up. If the dealer gives you any grief, just bring up the fact that the TMV on a 2001 is below invoice. They're still making $ on their holdback.
