Thank you all so much for your follow ups to my post. Perhaps considering violence against intruders is a bit inappropriate, but all bets remain off should I actually discover someone 'in the act.'

    In response to the questions:

Nothing inside the vehicle was locked, including the glovebox.

The front windows were rolled up (full doors).

The back windows were off, as was the rear window.

Nothing was cut, scratched, vandalized or otherwise damaged.

The ONLY items stolen were car paperwork, a 4-way lug wrench and my fiancee's sunscreen (she's Irish and burns easily).

My $150 parking permit was left on the front seat (it is for the garage at my office building, and is the kind that suspends from the rearview. It was left in the Jeep by mistake.) This actually valuable item was not taken, although it was moved.

My vehicle seemed like a pretty low-risk for break-in only because I don't keep anything in it. The cops thought so too.

As it turns out, gang members in my area are now encouraged to break into a car as an initiation practice. Part of their 'proof' of having completed their initiation is to furnish insurance cards, registration, owner's manuals and the like to their gang affiliates as evidence of an actual break-in. Stupid kids with too much time on their hands and folks that don't beat them enough, or too much.

As this is now a common practice in my area, I would advise you to move your car paperwork from the glovebox to another hidden location.

I blame this occurence on the neighborhood I'm living in. I'm moving in two weeks, and should have waited until then to buy a new car. Problem is that my old GMC died earlier than I'd hoped.

As Henry I said, "A pox on those sufficiently foolish and evil to come by profit from the loss of others at their hands."

With everything unlocked as you folks suggested, what's to keep someone from stealing the whole vehicle?

    Cheers, and thanks.

I'd love the logos except for one itsy bitsy thing.....I'M A LONGHORN!!!! :D

That's okay...the chrome Longhorn (steer) emblem I'm putting on eXcalibur will cancel your A&M logo out...heh heh heh....

I have the Sentry key option to keep someone from stealing my car. One of our members had their brand new Wrangler broken into a couple of times and while his ignition was messed up once, they didn't get the vehicle, thanks to the Sentry key. If someone really wants to steal your car they will, no matter what you have on it for security, but the Sentry key seems to work better than many other devices.

I'm just happy I live in a relatively safe neighborhood. It's so out-of-the-way that not many people know about it, and besides, the pickings would be fairly slim there, too.

Terry: The painful thought that your son...living IN Austin....is an Aggie (ouch)...is making me re-think my decision to follow your recommendation to name my baby eXcalibur.....(kidding of course!)....Austin is my hometown, by the way...

(sorry...this wasn't a "Wranger" discussion, but just HAD to enter my $.02 worth!)

(maybe I should go from "eXcalibur" to "hooX em"????

    ...or is it ever?

Just curious to my fellow Wranglers' thoughts. Heat index here in Tuscaloosa forecast for 105 today. Drove topless yesterday in nearly identical temp, and was fairly comfortable as long as I was moving. A couple of long red light cycles, and I was tempted to turn on the a/c (somehow, that just didn't seem right??).

Guess Tom's discussion of his dog in the heat and his using the a/c got me curious about this. I know heat tolerance is a personal, subjective issue, but was just curious if the long-time Wranglers feel top-up on really hot days makes one a "Wrangler Weenie"?

    Thanks,

    Fellow jeepers,

I bought a new 2005 Unlimited at the end of March: Black, hard top, etc. I have been loving my Jeep so far. I have one problem though, when trying to open my passenger lock from the inside it stick and takes like three or four tries. It annoys my wife who thinks buying the Jeep wasn't the best idea to begin with (so she always rubs this in). Anyone having a similar problem? Think I'm covered by warrranty (I haven't really checked)?

    Thanks,

so take it in and have it taken care of. :)

As for college emblems, my university (of North Texas) colors are green. Another reason my Jeep is green.

I can't brag about football, cuz well, they stink!

But EVERYBODY knows that OSU cancels out ANY OU logo. Pistol Pete has guns. :) heheh

    Keats:

Strange as it sounds, despite OU kicking Texas' butt for what...5 straight years now...? I've always sort of liked OU....particularly during the Switzer era.

In the Air Force, I was stationed in Omaha and (sorry 'Husker fans), developed an immense dislike for Nebraska--I saw them as bullies in the 70's..scores 77-0?? C'mon!! Just made my season when Switzer kicked Osborne's tail!

(guess I'd better make a Wangler mention here....um..I love my Wrangler!)

Paul, North Texas dominates the Sun Belt conference. Although my future alma mater ( Grad School at University of Memphis) did thump you guys in the New Orleans bowl a couple of seasons ago.

Randyace, yeah, I don't dislike Texas all that much either. Texas has the best shot they've had in years this coming season at ending the loosing streak, but um, I think Mac Brown is still coaching... ;) Season after next, though, OU will be a juggernaut again.

In regards to question 2, I've read that the YJ's had 15 or 19-gallon tanks, depending on the model. After 91, Chrysler only produced the 19-gallon tank, but installed longer fill tubes in some so they would only fill to 15 gallons. My 03 TJ has a 19 gallon tank, but I can only fill to around 15 gallons before the gas pump shuts off. Supposedly you can cut the fill tube in the tank so the gas pump won't shut off until your tank is full. Has anyone ever tried this? Seems like you could go a couple more days between fill-ups.

    It's a Jeep thing... I understand.

OOOH, the powerhouse sunbelt conference. :)

Driving trails down there in Alabama, I'm hearing all about Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia... guess I need to pick a college team around here that I favor or I'll have problems in society come September/October! :) hehe j/k

mike, I've read about the tube cutting, but I'm not sure it is the fill tube. I had my tank out last weekend doing a gas tank skid install, but I didn't try the tube cutting. Just wasn't worth the effort to me. There ARE writeups on how to do it though. www.gottrail.com has one I believe.

It gets too hot in L.A.'s San Fernando Valley sometimes. For me the deciding factor is actually traffic. Zipping along at 60 feels fine. Dead stopped on the freeway, baking in the sun and exhaust fumes, is not fun.

It's a 19 gallon tank, which if you start from fumes and fill the last few gallons very slowly, you can fill with over 20 gallons.

You are correct about the single tank with different fill tube lengths fitted to YJs and early TJs.

With everything unlocked as you folks suggested, what's to keep someone from stealing the whole vehicle?

First, see mtngals reply about Sentry Key.

Second, apart from slowing the thief by maybe ten seconds as they slice the top or force the door lock, how does leaving everything unlocked correlate with making it easier to steal the whole vehicle?
  • mac24mac24 Member Posts: 3,910
I think Mac mentioned using GPS info instead of the odometer to try and minimize any errors there as well............................

I think that would be too much of a pain. ;)

What I actually said was to use a GPS to check the accuracy of your speedometer/odometer. It's then very easy to correct your figures by the percentage of the inaccuracy (if any).
  • mac24mac24 Member Posts: 3,910
It's not just a heat issue, but one of sun protection as well. Additionally, the effects of air turbulance have an influence too. With a top on (full or soft) and the windows down, I actually find it painful on my ears after a few minutes at highway speeds, hence I usually have the windows shut and use the a/c when a top is on.

However, with the temps now in the mid eighties and with accompanying high humidity, I'm perfectly comfortable in my other vehicle with all four windows down. There's no painful buffeting, lots of circulation, and little noise.

There's a whole bunch of other factors to take into account besides the heat (and I'd never dare call anyone here a Weenie ;) ).

"but um, I think Mac Brown is still coaching"

boy, now don't think I don't know what you're referring to! Lots of Longhorners are dismayed by his inability to win the "big" one (not counting the miracle game against Michigan in the Rose Bowl)....even dating back to his years at N.C.

Hate to admit it, but rumour had it that Steve Superior had been contacted by Texas, then decided to make the rest of us SEC residents miserable by returing to the conference and to South Carolina. Now, had he gone to Texas, THAT would have ensured a multiplication of Texas haters...and I probably wouldn't blame 'em.

Just my opinion, but it's too hot for being top-down or sunroof open when the temps get much above 90 - of course we don't worry about heat index because there's not much for humidity in the desert or the mountains. If I had a safari top perhaps I could go higher than that comfortably.

I started out from Vegas last weekend with the sunroof open, but decided to button it up at the Nevada/California line. It wasn't the temperature it was the wind that made me re-think having the top partly open. With that much wind and at 65, everything was flapping and, like mac said, my ears were ringing.

By the way, at freeway speeds and having the sunrider open with the windows on I noticed (as was mentioned a while ago) that the windows are sucked in quite a bit. Is that enough to stretch them out of shape or do damage to them? I haven't noticed any changes in them, but I've only driven that way (high speeds and sunroof open) a couple of times.

Hey Keats. I have figured it out. The Jeep may be new but I believe that its haunted. You must do an exorcisim and the sooner the better or IT will spread and you will have to change its name to Squeaky. Drive an early model red VW (1959 should work well) around the Jeep exactly thirity times while singing The Doors LA Woman.(Must keep speed up to 40mph) Sprinkle some Wild Turkey, filtered through a microfiber towel from Target, on each tire and and the infected areas, YELL "get out of my Jeep now" three times and jump on front and rear bumper three times.Quickly drink the remaining Wild Turkey and have a friend test drive (don't drink and drive) and all noises should be gone. You must do this in a Wal-Mart parking lot at noon on any Saturday for it to be completely effective. Groaning Jeeps are no laughing matter. Get busy!!! Let me know how it works out or I can just read about it in the newspaper on Sunday. Your welcome in advance:) John ">

I lived in Memphis umpteen years ago. That's just a typical weekend you've described. You forgot the BBQ run though. Now that I think of it, that's where I traded in my CJ-5 on my first station wagon (yeah, I was young and dumb then!).

John, that was great. I don't have any noises coming from my Jeep, but I think I'll try that anyway :D

I surprised myself on my trip back from Ohio. After about 70 miles, 450 to go, and no sunblock. I put the top up (left the windows out). I swore it would never be "too hot" to have the top down. I guess the SUN proved me wrong :surprise:

I have a beeyooteeful silver Unlimited and I see alot of talk about blending the name of their jeep with the X's. Now the unlimited has just enough room to fit a good sized adjective directly below the tag. The first thought that came to mind was Unlimited Nastiness, but the second, more rational, thought was that you guys and girls could come up with some gooder ones.

Also, what kind of place can make the font/application???
  • redrocker15redrocker15 Member Posts: 102
    Ravager:

There should be sign places that create vinyl transfer letters in many sizes and fonts - depending on your location. Look for places that make advertizing banners and signs for businesses. In addition to simple lettering, they usually have the ability to use your artwork to make similar transfers if you're so inclined.

"Unlimited ________". Hmmmm. I'm sure you'll get lots if suggestions from this crew. Maybe "Unlimited Horizons", "U. Capabilities", "U. Possibilities", "U. Boundaries"? Those are more along a positive note, but I can see a tricked-out, lifted, testosterone-pulsing Monster Jeep with the name "Unlimited Nastiness" as well.

It'll be interesting to see the other suggestions. Keats seems to be a pretty literary type; maybe he'll suggest a classic. (NOT "Unlimited Boomer Sooners"!) :P

Don't know about the damage part... but I doubt it. In any event, the Wrangler operator's manual suggests no Sundider use if operating at sustained
speeds greater than 40mph -- probably for the very reasons you mentioned. Dirk.
  • This past weekend, I drove 180 miles upwards of 75 mph and following the owner's manual suggestion, I rolled up the rear window (should have removed it now that I've seen some abrasions left on the plastic :( ). I did have long periods of flapping going on over my head due to strong cross winds. Less flapping and snapping after changing directions in relation to the winds. I did not the side windows sucking in but no more than I get while driving with top up and regular roll down windows open.

Page 125 of my '05 Unlimited manual says "If you are going to be driving faster than 40 mph with the Sunrider feature open, it is recommended that you remove the rear window of the vehicle." I can't find anything stating not to drive sustained speeds greater than 40 mph using the Sunrider. Maybe manual change?

Congrats on your new Jeep! It was fun to have help with naming "eXcalibur" from the gang here. And, I also see lots of possibilities; however, I'll just contribute one:

    Unlimited
    Thrills

Gary is right. There are lots of sign-making places that do customization orders in the font type you specify. Most have the skills to take your "idea", and transfer that to a "real" product. Look in the yellow pages for a place that advertises for car graphics.

    Enjoy!

Hmmm - I'm going to have to re-read my manual. I don't remember anything about a speeds as it relates to the sunrider option, but I do remember something in the book about taking off the side windows if you drive with the back window off. Not a bad thing to review the owners manual once in a while - I forget things too easily now...

Hey, just got some new Revo's put on my Unlimited today... and there great!!!

It really improves the handling, it's quieter (sorry if that's not a real word!), and the 31" tires look allot better than the Goodyear 30" GSA's that came on the vehicle.

Also, I was able to sell the Goodyears for $70/tire.

My new silver unlimited is "lookin good"! If your thinking about changing to 31's on the wranglers, look at the Revo's!

P.S. I changed out the spare too... it juuuust barrrrrely fit under the tail light.

Okay heres the deal, after days of trail and error the dealership replaced the stearing gearbox. This did not fix the problem, so after a few more days and many calls to the Jeep factory, the dealership deceided they need replace the lower suspension arms. They claim this has fixed the problem however I have not driven the Jeep to confirm this.

I can tell you that there are 2 more jeeps in the dealership shop for the same problem. If I were you I would have yours checked out.

On cold starts, is it normal to have a small amount of what I would call lifter or valve train clatter? The duration is maybe 1-2 seconds and then it goes away. No noises when starting again after the engine warms up. This is on a 2004 X with a bit over 10,000 miles. Thanks.
  • rivermo22rivermo22 Member Posts: 8
I can tell you I have that as well on my 2004 X, I also find that I have problems actually starting my Jeep on all days, this has occured since day one.

I have driven my Jeep a bit (Monday only as I haven't done the toe-in adjustment or alignment yet) and noticed that it clanked over uneven bumps (like speed bumps at an angle).

Well after investigating what I thought would be a trackbar hitting the skid, it turned out to be the exhaust hanger next to the Kilby skid hitting the side. I suspect it always did this, but thumped the tank before.

My goal tonite is to bend the hanger out about an inch or so and see if that cures my problems. Also need to replace my D35 differential plug as the one I have now lets diff fluid out. Not much, but enough that the diff cover under the hole is constantly moist with gear oil.

Kinda scared me at first, thinking I messed something up. I sure don't want that noise coming from the back. Makes it seem like a lousy install. :)

It probably isn't hurting anything as long as it lasts such a short time, but you could switch to synthetic oil and get rid of it most likely. I use Mobil 1 in my Thelma Jane.

I was sold on synthetic oil after first using it on my 1994 Z28 Camaro several years ago. I had cold start lifter noise pretty bad, until I switched to Mobil 1. Even at the same viscosity rating, synthetic oils have better cold flow characteristics compared to conventional dino oils. Since most engine wear occurs on cold starts, I figured that an oil that circulates sooner must be a good thing.

Also, it could be that your oil filter's anti-drainback valve is not sealing properly and is allowing the oil in the filter to drain out. You don't get oil circulation on a cold start until the filter fills up, if the filter is empty. You can see this on the first start after a filter change: it takes a couple seconds for any pressure to show up on the oil pressure gauge.

Have you hugged your Jeep today?
  • tsjaytsjay Member Posts: 4,591
I was all set to tell you EXACTLY what your clanging noise was, but I kept reading and saw that you figured it out. It will only get worse, if you don't do something about it. You could have heard Thelma Jane coming a mile away out on the trails before I "fixed" the problem.

I used one of those bungie thingies to pull the tailpipe hanger away from the Kilby. I found a convenient hole in the frame to hook the bungie into. I guess that is all I am going to have to do, since that bungie has been there a long time now, and it seems to be doing the job.

A problem that's not uncommon with Fram filters. :(

If it is a Fram, try spending $3 on an AC or a Wal-Mart Supertech to see if that helps. It'll be about the cheapest parts-swap troubleshooting you'll ever do.
