Problems with both A/c heating, cooling system in car. a/c cycles off for 10-15 minutes when it's hot out. Dealer finds no problems. Also, rough, irregular transmission shifting started at around 10,000 miles. Dealer, of course, finds no problems. Have an arbitrator hearing this week. How do these things normally go, for those of you who have done them? We have a host of issues with our van; some were fixed, but 5 big ones have neither been correctly diagnosed nor fixed. Wanting our van replaced, since we can't trust it, and could never sell it with it's history! Any advice from any of you who have 'been there'? We only have 24,000 miles on this van; it started going into the shop for repair at just 2,000 miles and it's been downhill from there. Would love some feedback! Thanks, Leaney

If the engine ECU "thinks" the engine cooling water jacket is beginning to overheat. Not actually overheating, but close too.

Dealer should check to be sure the electric radiator cooling fan(s) are working, and at full speed, and I would change out the thermostat and the water jacket temperature sensor just for grins.

If the radiator cooling fans don't come on early enough in the engine (over) heating cycle the water temperature will go into overheat just as you describe.

So DKB2 what was the final response and/or fix for the dashboard discoloration by the dealer? BTW my email is posted now.

My sienna was purchased Sept of 2003, from day one, it had some hesitation problem especially during cornering or accelerate after break. It seemed to be fixed after they re-programmed the Transmission from one of the TSB mentioned by the members here by late 2003. However, I still experienced transmission problem once a while (once a month?), which is very difficult to reproduce. I noticed that there is a separate forum talking about this hesitation issue. So I have been very patient waiting for the solutions from Toyota.

About 1 month ago, the transmission problem happened again and the car could not shift properly since then. And the second day, engine light turned on. I drove the car to a close Toyota dealer (Toyota on Front in Toronto), they spend a whole day to diagnose the car, and said Pressure Control Solenoid needs to be replace, and they ordered it from Japan and might take more than 1 week to be delivered. I asked for the option of getting a loaner car from them. They refused to do so, I called Toyota Canada, and got the same answer. So I waited for 10 days to get the Solenoid delivered from Japan, and had to pay car rental fees by myself. After they replaced the Solenoid, nothing changed, the car still had problem. So they ordered another part from another dealer from Toronto, after they replaced that part, the transmission was still not working. So they finally got approval from Toyota Canada to go ahead to replace the Transmission. I have been really disappointed with the service from Toyota on Front, their altitude (especially the manager), and the quality of the new Sienna.

I went through the process with my 96 Dodge Caravan and received a 2000 Chrysler T&C paying the MSRP difference. It looks like that the MSRP vs MSRP replacement is a typical offer. You can pick the same model or different model from the same company and pay the MSRP difference. You also pay the tax for the difference. The Caravan had some noise problem from the rear brake but the service at a dealership made the problem so bad I had to seek a help from Chrysler. When I tried to resolve the issues with the help of Chrysler, they did not care about it. So, I filed a complaint to the arbitration board and got response that the lemon law in PA is not applicable since the vehicle was more than a year old and had exceeded the mileage limit. All my processes were done in writing or phone calls rather than face to face contact. Soon after, they offered a MSRP vs MSRP replacement but without covering the extra money that I had to spend to the service department who never fixed the problem but worsen the situation. So, the deal was off and I contacted a local lawyer that they do not collect money from me rather they collect their expenses from the company once we win the case. I supplied all the document to the lawyer and he responded that he can help after reviewing my document. He wrote a letter adding few case references to the company and at the same time he tried to persuade me so that he can mediate the issue rather than going to a court. After all, he will have to deal with the companies more often in the future. We settled the case when they offered the MSRP vs MSRP exchange and a credit for the extra expenses that we spend on the accessaries we put on and the services that supposed to not to happen.

The most important thing is to collect and organize all the document and evidences. I had all the service records and few pictures that proves how lousy the warranty services, performed by their dealership, were. After settling, I ordered a new van from the other dealership and received a new van few months later. It takes a lot of patience, effort and time to go through the process. The Dodge was about 3 years old and had about 38000 miles by the time we got the new exchange.

    Good luck.

There have been some reports (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) stating that Toyota will be introducing another software upgrade to remedy the hesitation problem sometime soon (there has already been a TSB revision in April 2005 for the Lexus ES330). I am very surprised that Toyota would change out the entire transmission (mega-bucks to them) if a new software upgrade is soon to be available. Was your van not driveable?

Regarding the solenoid valve replacement, someone in the Engine Hesitation forum is getting ready to have the same thing done. We were counting on this being a real fix of the problem, so your experience is a little disappointing. I wonder if something else more serious was involved with your transmission that led them to repalce the whole thing? What exactly were the conditions you were experiencing when you took it in after the solenoid replacement? Let us know how the new tranny works.

My radiator cracked right away on my 2004 Toyota Sienna causing the air conditioner to not work. Soon after there was a recall on the 2004 radiators. I am extremely disappointed with this van.

Help. I can't figure out how to remove the passenger side, middle row 'tumbling' seat.

There should be directions with illustrations in your owners manual.

It's actually pretty simple. Tumble the seat forward as usual. Then while pulling up on the strap that is normally UNDER the sear, roll it backwards again and the seat disconnects. It's a bit more tricky getting them back in since it's possible to put the latch on the front of the seat on the wrong floor "pins" (the hooks on the seat need to go on the REAR set of pins).
Take a look at how the seats are hooked into the floor at the front of the seats before you remove them so you'll know how to put them back. The instructions you need are on pages 74 through 79 of the 2005 manual.

YES!!!! I have this problem with warm air coming through the vents when set to cool as well! In addition, our AC 'cycles off' (as the dealer calls it) for up to 10-15 minutes at a time! (Athough the dealer claims that this will not happen for more than 1 minute and is not noticable; HUH)! On a hot day, 15 minutes with no AC (and HOT air blowing through) is not fun! We have sweat dripping off of our faces! The whole heating and cooling system seems to be messed up in this car. Naturally, they can find no problems.

We also have 4 other MAJOR additional problems with this car and have Arbitration scheduled for tomorrow. WIsh us luck!

Re: knocking sound in engine: I have this problem too in my 2004 Sienna. It is one of a multitude of problems I am having with this car. At first,I noticed it only when going around a corner. Now, it is any time I accelerate. It sounds like a car from the 1970's with cheap gas! The only difference is, my car does it all the time, not just when cold. I am glad you posted this so that I know it is not just my car. My car only has 24,000 on it; and this problem started around 10,000 miles ago, but is much worse now.

The hesitation problem I experienced back in 2003 (I also had a couple of posts relating to that problem) was improved by the TBS in 2003 (it happened less often after they applied TBS). During 2004, I only experienced hesitation problem 3-4 times. This time, I think it could be completely different story. On April 18, the day I sent my car for them to diagnose the problem after the "check engine" light turned on, the first thing they did was to apply a TBS to do ECM Recalibration (I am not sure the software they applied this time was the same with what they applied in 2003 or not, I will double check the invoice to find out the TBS number once I get home from work), but no change at all. The car was not just hesitating, it was almost undrivable, when I was driving on hightway, I could not drive at the speed more than 80km/h, and the RPM always showed around or more than 4000-5000 whenever I pressed the gas pedal (I hope the engine was not abused and damaged due to this), very scary experience, I had to keep flashing my emergency light to alert the drivers around me. As the last resort after the Toyota dealer spent 2 weeks to fix my car (during that time, I had no car to drive since Toyota refused to provide me loaner car), I think they had no choice but to replace the transmission. I have driven the car with new transmission for 1 week with 300 KM on it, so far it is much better and I haven't experienced any hesitation problem (yet!)
  • donxdonx Member Posts: 44
OK, I checked the invoices from 2003 and last month, here is the TSB numbers Toyota applied to my Sienna:
    Nov 21, 2003, TSB TC007-03 TC3001 .8 T1 26 T2 99 89661-09101
April 18, 2005, TSB 1307 (ECM Calibration Update - Shifting Enhancement)

I wondered the TSB they applied on April 18, 2005 might be the new one, which is the same or similar to the one applied to Lexus ES330? I hope there will be somebody who can confirm this.

If so, I got a new Transmission and new TSB applied, I hope I will be OK for a while.

We got our Sienna in December of 2003 and it has been to the dealer over 20 times, with only 26,000 miles.
There is no solution to any of the problems!
    The service is horrible.
The transmission has problems, the heating and a/c, the doors and liftgate, the tires, the moonroof, the dvd player, the seats(casing, seatbelt, and strength), the dashboard, the normal doors, the trim, and even the glove box!
The only thing they have done is change the oil and fix the 3rd row!
This is service you'd expect from a $100 used car not a $40k plus car
It is coming time to just ditch it before it ditches us!
Toyota has do perform a miracle for us to keep this car, or to even think of getting a car from either Lexus or Toyota.
They have lost every once of respect from us and might never get it back!
    Major :lemon:

I can't believe it has taken me so long to resolve this issue (3-1/2 months). DarCars in Frederick Maryland has agreed to pay 50% after raising a stink. I have owned a car for thirty years and have never had problems like this. I contacted Toyota twice (the second cs rep. was nasty with me) and they weren't any help. Toyota can't or won't do anything because the dealerships are independently owned. Here's another catagory to add to my researching when I choose a car.

Two days before I put it in the shop the emission light came on. Need a new catalytic converter........In the shop it goes they found "additional codes" and not only does it need the hydrolic brake booster but the accuator. Additional $1100.00. Will it be the computer next? How could it show one code than another? I'd like to get rid of this lemon!!! I'll never buy another Toyota again.

Thanks for letting me vent. I feel better :)

Don't spend the extra bucks for the traction control.

Hi guys, I have been reading on here about the tire problems. At least I know I am not alone and am hope to use this as ammo when fighting with my dealer. I had to replace all 4 tires at $1300 CDN (list at $560 each). Had to be brought in from the US. Dunlop dealer gave a deal due to my problem but claim it is an alignment issue, not the tires. Toyota says it is a tire issue.

My biggest complaints about all this is I specifically asked the dealer before I leased this van (4 year lease) what my maitenance expenses would be and at no time was I told that the I would need a new set of tires ever 2 years. And the fact that the Toyato dealership who performed all the maitenance never told me my tires were wearing out until they were shot. Now Toyota has washed their hands and said it is Dunlop's problem. Is this part of this famous Toyota quality and service that I always heard about ?? I know this is my first and last Toyota product.
  • eastoncarguyeastoncarguy Member Posts: 29
I have been quietly reading the posts on this site. I bought a Toyota thinking I was getting the best quality product for $40K. I started to think that perhaps I had unrealistic expectations of what quality should be. The general impression of the Sienna is that it is a nice vehicle. The rash of problems we have had with this vehicle now have us not wanting another Toyota/Lexus product. I'm gun shy if there reallyis a quality product out there.

We've ignored the tinny front doors as "cheap materials".

The known transmission hesitation, which by the way is extremely irritating, is chalked up to poor design.

Terrible run flat tires, trade off for AWD.

Gas mileage WELL below sticker listings and far worse than the 2001 Chrysler Town & Country AWD it replaced.

But now with 16,400 miles we have had:

    * The rear A/C failed last year and had to be repaired

    * Sliding doors have had issues

    * HID headlight failed

    * Center speaker AMP failed and had to replaced

    * Transmission shifting very rough. Dealer tried to update software and the engine control module failed and had to be replaced.

    * Now the Rear A/C has failed again. The dealer now needs to rip out all of the a/c tubing and replace.

This is the 4th time in a year that the vehicle has been out of service for 2 days or more. As of tomorrow it will be out of service 6 of the last 30 days, and it looks like it will be there AT LEAST one more day past tomorrow. :lemon:

The dealer has been trying to get things fixed but the fact is we shouldn't be having this level of issues at this point. My late 80's Chrylser K car was more reliable if you can believe that.

I registered a complaint with Toyota today and they are looking into it. Toyota had better be careful. In their quest to beat GM in volume, they better not develop GM's 80's Quality cars.

I've just found this discussion site, and have read several messages about the same problem we're having-- rust on bottom of driver's door, despite the dealer having put on the "protective" tape.
Has anyone tried to get Toyota to give them a NEW door? We've had the van for 8 months, it's basically new, and I feel that the dealer's solution to just scrape and repaint is not adequate. Won't the rust just keep returning until after the 5 year warrantee is done and then my door will develop holes?
Thanks to anyone who would like to comment!

And now today in USA Today, I saw the Sienna is rated the number 1 minivan in initial quality by JD Powers. LOL

Oh well, at least that means that not everyone is experiencing the same level of frustration which is some level of comfort I guess.

Has anyone had any problems burning oil or oil leakage on Siennas? I heard that this was a problem a couple of years ago. Has this been resolve?
    Thanks for any info.

  • scoti1scoti1 Member Posts: 676
I have not heard of it being a problem in the 2004+ models.

The 1997 - 2002 models have a special policy to cover a problem called oil sludge - it may appear that you are burning or leaking oil, but in reality it has turned into a black goo that coats the inside of your engine instead of circulating. The policy is for 8 years, unlimited miles, so if you have one of these years, you could be covered for a free engine repair. You will need to prove that you performed reasonable maintenance. You can find a lot of information on this problem by doing a web search for "Toyota Engine Sludge". It also affected the 4 and 6 cyl. Camry, Highlander, Avalon, Celica, Lexus ES300, and Lexus RX300 for the same model years.

If you own a newer model, then I don't know if you will be covered, even under warranty (I think there is some statement in the car papers that engine sludge is not covered), but I would raise cain about it -- that is if you can prove you changed the oil on time in accordance with the manual.

Hello Group, We too are having the same problem with our tires as many of you mentioned. We are currently having Goodyear do some testing. That would be on our second set of tires. We still have the original ones in storage. I think that maybe a class action suit against Toyota maybe in order. There is a problem with these vehicles and it needs to be addressed by Toyota. How can so many people have the exact same problem with many different brands of tires. I have never had any problems with any other Toyota product I have owned. But, I find what Toyota is doing is passing the blame for their mistake. How says all of the rest of you?

I'm a little surprised I haven't seen (yet) many posts about problems with the 2004/2005 Toyota Sienna steering. I bought my Sienna last August. Power is good; interior room is good; the steering is awful. This vehicle's steering feels like a 30 year old vehicle's needing a new rack. The steering has way too much play in it, causing the vehicle to drift left and right on the road, thus requiring far too many corrections. This seems like a huge blunder by Toyota engineers. The steering problem is exacerbated at highway speeds, and especially under windy conditions. Steering is one of the critical components that should not be overlooked and I am bitter that Toyota did just that. The vehicle's poor steering alone is enough for me to seriously not recommend this vehicle to anyone. Buyer beware...
  • jipsterjipster Member Posts: 6,279
chunkymonkey, did you have your dealer check out your steering problem? There may be a defect in your steering mechanisms. Seemed to drive and handle well when I drove it( about a 30 minute test drive)

might be something as simple as over-inflated front tires.
  • srittigersrittiger Member Posts: 1
AWD eats tires and brakes on almost any vehicle. Dealers know it but do not tell the truth because they can blame it on driving habits the make of tire or road conditions. I purposely did not purchase the AWD option because of past experience with a GM product. By the way 38,000 miles on one set of tires is not bad for an AWD. I don't know if these vans have idler arms on the front suspension but if they do you will most likely need to replace those frequently as well. But it probably goes like a tank in the snow
  • heywood1heywood1 Member Posts: 851
gb2005 said his tires were worn at 38,000 kilometers--(that's about 23,500 miles).

I have a 2004 Sienna with 45K. I am on my second set of tires and this set is now showing signs of needing replacement. All tires have been rotated every 5k. Alignments have been checked/done every year. The dealership can NOT adjust the alignment on the rear. It is a floating suspension. I will participate in initiating a class action suite to resolve this matter.
  • wwestwwest Member Posts: 10,706
I just removed a set of Michelin cross terrains from my 2001 AWD RX300 after ~45,000 miles and they still have ~30% wear left. Installed Bridgestone Turanza ER30's summer tires since the Michelins were getting a bit noisy.

I have a 2004 Sienna XLE FWD with about 24k miles. I have the engine knocking sound during acceleration. I only notice it at slow speeds around 20 mph. For example when slowing down to turn into a parking lot then accelerating in the parking lot. I have taken the van to Toyota Service several times for this problem. The first few times they claimed that the problem couldn't be reproduced, and suggested I start using premium fuel. I have always used 89 octane or better. I've tried injector cleaners, and octane boosters with no results. Finally I convinced the service manager to ride along with me while I reproduced it every time. They kept the van and had a service specialist look at it. There answer was "were aware of the problem, but won't fix it". They never gave me a specific or detailed explanation of exactly what is wrong. All I can hope is that whatever it is, it's not damaging the engine.

I sat at the dealer for 2 hours eating popcorn, drinking soda & watching tv (that's nice) only to find out that they need to order a part to stop the airbag light & that they've comped me brakes 2x & won't do it again. They said my "normal wear pattern" is every 6,000 miles. YIKES! I have @ 23,000 miles so far & am on 3rd set of brakes. I got lifetime tires at Costco several months ago when mine wore out.
I need rotors & pads on the front. They want $410. I said that I heard that the dealers charge more. He replied "a little bigger, a little better, better trained, genuine Toyota parts (is that last one always a good thing?..the first one should imply the ability to be less expensive..but that's nonproductive). He didn't mention a warranty on the work. I said no & am shopping warranties & prices.
Looks like Firestone has a lifetime warranty on all aspects of the brakes except rotors. They expressed surprise at my "pattern" (as did several other brake shops) & said that often the calipers are misaligned/rubbing & cause premature brake wear.
Well, I'm going to go :confuse: see, but why didn't Toyota look for the cause-especially since they were nice enough to replace pads 2x & rotors 1x? They matter of factly told me that it was my pattern. Since it's not covered on my extended warranty, I'm going elsewhere...Just wondering if any of this sounds familiar.

I have discovered that you may set your "oil change light" in any increment of 1000 miles up to 5000. Just watch the display when you reset it (odometer display - engine off - turn on while holding reset button in). Each of the five symbols represents 1000 miles. Release when only two left and you have set the light to come on in 3000 miles.
  • ohresohres Member Posts: 46
The service manager that I am dealing with blamed the uneven wear of my 04 Sienna Ltd AWD to the AWD system at 5000 mile svc and then changed the blame to the run flat tire at 10k mile svc. The other two AWD vehicles that I have owned for many years never had such a basic problem. 98 Subaru Outback AWD and 2000 T&C AWD both have about 95000 miles now and are mechanically solid. Based on my experience and the postings in this thread, this problem seems not belonging to the run flat tire but to the Toyota vehicle.

The T&C went through all kind of repairs but not because of the basic problems that I am experiencing with the new Toyota Sienna. The sole purpose of having a worry free vehicle (after going through all the headaches on Chrysler Minivans - 96 Caravan & 2000 T&C) by purchasing a reputable Toyota van was too much of a dream after all. Unfortunately, the choice of having an AWD minivan was extremely limited at the time of purchase.

Also, disappointed is that the Toyota dealer do not to want to honor the premium prepaid Toyota Maintenance Contract. They said that the prepaid plan is worth only $20 out of their $70 charges. When I argued about the plan he said that the ticket is worth $30 rather than $20. It looks like that the CS at the maintenance contract department of the Toyota thinks it the same way. I cannot understand on what basis they can charge $70 each for the 5k & 10k new car services. I was not aware of this kind of tricky gimmicks they have. I am wondering if others experience similar problem.

Recently, I filed a complaint to the Toyota CS about all the problems I am experiencing, including the problems with the vehicle itself and the service gimmicks their authorized dealer uses, wondering if the service manager will have the same sayings on my extended service contract in the future. My Chrysler dealer was very honest about honoring the extended service contract that I had with the vehicle. I hope that Toyota provides solutions right away so that I don't have to worry about going through their arbitration process.

After a few weeks of owning my 2004 Sienna LE, I noticed a "jerk" in the car when slowing down to a stop. The jerk/bump happens at exactly 40 kilometer per hour on the speedometer.
After trial and error, it seems to happen after running it up over 70 kph and then gently riding the brake to slow down to a stop. On hard braking, there is no jerk/bump.
I had the shop foreman at my dealer drive the van after the first oil change and he thought it was the transmission coming out of overdrive. He said to mention it on the next oil change. I should have had him note it in my file but I did not - Silly me.
Now every time I have them check it out, the problem does not happen.
This problem also happens when my wife drives the van so I know I am not going crazy.
The shop foreman said it would not affect the operation of the car but it is an annoyance on a $40,000 van.
Any help to solve the problem would be appreciated.

I am thinking of getting a bra for my 2004 Sienna but I have heard that there is a problem with the snaps braking easily.
    Any problems from other owners?
I checked with one dealer and they did not stock it because of this fault.
Need to know before my trip at the end of July.

I bought one for my Sienna. I hope you have lots of free time, as It's a real pain to install. I'll sell you mine. It's back in the box under my desk. If I ever get rid of the van, I'll have the front bumper painted before I trade. Much easier.
  • toyotakentoyotaken Member Posts: 897
Just as a recommendation from someone who has seen alot of vehicles over the past 10 years working with Toyota's, but don't purchase a "bra" for ANY kind of car. That is unless you wish to remove it EVERY time you wash it to make sure that it dries correctly and get all of the grime out from underneath it. If you want to protect the front of the hood, invest in a hood protector (hard plastic) so that it won't ruin the paint on the van. The bras look ok, but trash the finish on the part covered by it by the constant abrasion and water accumulation. Just my $.02

I cringed when I read your message. We had experienced the same type of jerking motion. Approx. 3 monthes later, the valve body in our transmission went out, followed by an electical problem that they are currently working on.

I share your frustration that we have these types of problems on a $40,000 car, we bought a Toyota to avoid this!

My brand new (now 800 miles) Sienna has had problems with hesitation/loss of power. The dealership found "plastic chunks" in the gas tank. I now have a new gas tank, fuel pump and fuel sender. The thing that concerns me is that they do not know from where the plastic came. Anyone else have this problem and able to find the source??
    Thanks

Did replacement of the valve body eliminate the jerking motion?
What mileage was on the van when the valve body went out?

What kind of problem is it?

parts are on order. I picked up the car to drive it home (can't go anywhere this weekend),
and I had 3 idiot lights on, that were not on when I dropped off the car. Check engine, trac off, and vsc off. I ended up talking to the mechanic and he reported that during the
air conditioning debug procedure, the oxygen sensor failed! Huh? 15k miles? What a lemon
this car is. An oxygen sensor is on order. I was told that it was okay for me to drive the car
during the next week, but I am not going to. Thank goodness I have a second vehicle- a Honda. This car was mfg in Jan 04. It has had the power steering recall, but not the radiator recall (yet).

I am wondering if my 2004 Sienna has the same problem. I can hear a big banging noise when it stops but the dealer three times could not duplicate the problem. The rear suspension and brake components were all checked out and cleared for the noise. My vehicle also hesitates and looses power. During the recent 10k service, the dealer inspected the transmission and worked on the code. The transmission works better now but it still hesitates at times. Did you hear any noise before you find the plastic chunks? Thanks.

Be careful when driving your car under these conditions!
I am in the midst of a very similar experience. 2004 XLE fwd. 18K. Air conditioning sporadic and then non-existant (only hot air)...so scheduled service call for today. On the way to the dealership, same 3 idot lights came on as you saw (CE, Track off, VSC off) but car was driving fine. Stopped by my office 2 miles later to pick up some paperwork to do while waiting for the car and steam started pouring out from under the hood. So, didn't drive any further and had it towed. Still waiting to hear the diagnosis from Toyota dealer.

I just bought a new 05 LTD. I notice that in the service record it says it has body work done to it. I think the front bumber has been repainted. I am going to find out tomorrow what has been done. Can I return the van back? I bought a new car not a repainted one. I only drove 120 miles in less than two weeks. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.
