Thanks! I guess you can tell how much I love that doggy. I AM very lucky to have him, as you say. He's asleep on the bed behind me right now, and I'm getting ready to join him.
I was comparing stats and it looks like they have added an additional 27 HP and still improved the MPG a wee bit. Sounds like DC is trying to make it more Highway Friendly, and get the Wrangler to folks who don't want to spring for the 6 Cylinder.
I got my Jeep stuck last night. It is still in there. I did a few things that I know I shouldn't have done. First, it was my first time. Second, it was night. Third, it just rained. Now I need advice to get out. My Front/Driver Side tire is about 2 ft deep. My rear tires aren't so bad. Maybe 1ft driver side and 1/2 ft other side. Front/Passenger tire isn't spinning. All others are. I tried to put boards under tires, but they keep spinning. Any ideas to get unstuck. I have someone with a 4x4 f150 that is a 2002. We are going to try and get it out at lunch, just wondering if there is something I need to know before I tow it out. Later.
Do you have tow hooks???? DO NOT HOOK ANYTHING UP TO THE BUMPERS TO PULL YOUR JEEP OUT! The bumpers are not strong enough to handle that kind of stress and will bend. That's why they have tow hooks that go THRU the bumper but are actually threaded into the frame.
First - be sure to use a tow strap without hooks. In a pinch, Home Depot sells a 20' 2" strap that should be fine for pulling you out (it will be over with the trailer balls and hitch mounts). You have a Sahara which should already have hooks. If possible, take a shovel and dig out the mud directly behind your tires, creating "ramps" to get you out. This will reduce some of the effort required when pulling you. Once the strap is attached on both ends, have you buddy slowly pull away until the slack is taken up. Have them first try to do a slow pull to extract you. If that doesn't work, try gradual increases in the pull they're doing. No sense in jerking it out if you don't have to.
If you're buried to the frame, just try to have your buddy line up on a straight pull and gently pull you out from the direction you got stuck entering. If you're in the Jeep while he's doing this, don't get too crazy with the gas while the tires are spinning. Sudden traction and spinning tires is bad for the driveline
Be sure to buy your buddy a cold beverasge of his choice!
Glad you made it home OK last night.
Please don't take this the wrong way, but I like the fact that in the last week we've had 2 members get stuck or have issues on the trails! This means you guys are out there using your Jeeps! I've got to give you props for gaining experience!
Check back after you've recovered it and we can give you some tips on cleaning it up after being in the mud!
Thanks for all that info. I do have tow hooks and that is what I was using. Those hooks are rock solid. I broke a nylon strap trying to get it out earlier, but it wasn't that great of a strap. Unfortunately I have to go back with a big Dodge Ram 1500 V8. I am worried this will not be able to help much since it is 2x4. It is my Step Dad, and he works at a machine shop, so he is getting some Chain Pull thing. It has gearing he was saying. He sounded very confident that we would get it out. So I am thinking we will.
Thanks for being happy that people are using their jeeps. I honestly thought people would have thought that I was an idiot for trying to do something that I didn't know exactly what I was doing. It was definitely fun and I will do it again. Just need to pay more attention and wait for daylight. My favorite moment was when I first got off the road and saw this puddle. I was nervous I couldn't make it. We went right through, not one problem. I just had to go out for some more that night!! I will take pictures and post them somewhere, maybe you guys can all have a real great laugh. Cheers!
So you just send out the little contact info and they send you a build sheet? Well I sent mine out, hopefully I have everything that I am wishing I have. Thanks for the link.
you may find that if it's dried out a bit, you can get out on your own with something under the front tires.
Don't feel bad, I got my Nissan stuck in my own back yard after a really good rain:
www.ewylie.com/images/misc/86NIssan720_4x4.jpg
What you can't see in this picture is the yard pitches up about 15 degrees to the right. 4" of soupy GA clay and open diffs = stuck Nissan (well trapped at least). This picture was taken from my "starting point" where I tried to build up enough momentum to get out. No luck. My wife was thrilled I thought I could make it out on my own and ended up cutting some nice grooves over near the trees... I waited 2 days, and drove it out in 2WD once everything dried out.
I won't say wheeling alone, in the dark, by yourself was a great idea, but you seem to have a good attitude and are enjoying yourself. That's what Jeeps are all about to me.
In the future, you may want to "walk" or poke a stick in water holes before crossing to make sure they won't swallow your Jeep or lead you to run into something covered by the water. If you see tracks going in but not coming out; may be time to take a pass on that hole!
I'll be glad to host the pictures for you if needed.
Thanks for the memories.. I spent many a nite in high school walking home after getting stuck while out wheeling in the dark.. Get yourself a high lift jack and when you get stuck like that you can jack up the vehicle and and put logs, etc under the tires and you can back out.
Hey, that little deal with the factory build sheet can be pretty useful.
My buddy at work, Mike, that recently bought that 97 Sport used the link that I posted and got his build sheet in about twenty minutes! DC also included a note that stated that their computer was showing that the work had never been performed on a factory recall on that Jeep. Apparently, there was a recall for the fuel gauge sending unit, and the previous owner had never taken it in for the work to be done.
How long can you take these back for things? What is the warranty period, anyhow? My last car was a Honda, and it never went back for anything, so I forgot all about a warranty. Now I need to investigate.
I too plugged in my info and had the build sheet in about 1 hour. Since I just bought my Jeep ('99 Sport) used, it was great to see what it originally came with. No Dana 44, but I do have the aluminum wheels and heavy duty electrical system. Sound system must be after market or dealer add-on.
Great way to check out a used purchase. Thanks for the insight.
Some ideas have been kicked around Tom, but nothing has ever come of them. Best for now is to mark your email public in your profile so folks can contact you that way.
Other folks have had some problems too. Gill has a link that takes you to chat without all the fancy stuff. BigKahuna had to use that version because of some limitation with his computer or his ISP or something.
Can you get to the photo gallery and the bulletin board once you get the home page up? Is chat the only thing that doesn't work?
I'll try to get that link for the stripped down chat room and post it here.
I forgot to mention that sometimes it takes a while for the log in screen to come up after you click on "chat." It appears that nothing is happening for a while, but often, if you just wait up to a couple minutes, the next screen will pop up where you type in a username.
Sometimes the next step takes a while too, after typing in your username and hitting enter.
OK, if nothing is working, then maybe you have an outdated cookie.
Do you know how to dump cookies???
Go to the start menu/settings/control panel/internet options/temporary internet files/settings/view files
This brings up a new window with all of your cookies. You then do "edit" and then "select all" and then back in the tool bar, "file" and then "delete."
This will delete ALL of your cookies, which is a good maintenance action to perform once in a while.
Be warned that if you do that, all of the sites where you have set up automatic log-in will have to be set up all over again, so be sure you know all of your passwords.
The other option would be to just look for cookies pertaining to Gill's and dump them individually.
I have a strong suspicion that the cookie that takes you to Gill's home page is outdated or corrupted somehow.
You will also want to "delete temporary internet files" on the intenet options page where you selected "settings" the first time in the earlier path listed above.
Try that and see what happens. I am in Gill's chat room right now.
Tom
Since Steve mentioned that he is concerned about the amount of space that a little byline takes up on the Edmunds server, I won't say "Have you hugged your Jeep today?". I intend to fully cooperate with the drive space saving concept. Far be it from me to type in a bunch of unnecessary stuff and take up drive space needlessly by rambling on and on. That would be selfish on my part, wouldn't it? I will make this dialogue part of my every post, so that people can see how important it is to conserve drive space.
Seriously, Steve, please exert your vast influence and see if we can get private messaging going here. We all know that you own a controlling interest in Edmunds and just do the host thing for kicks.
Hey, Rich, email me and let me know how things are going as far as getting into the stuff at Gill's. I have been waiting in the chat room, but I am all alone there.
This morning my other half is off work getting new tires on the Taco, so I got to drive to work in the Wrangler. I had forgotten how much low end grunt it has, especially compared to a 4 banger Taco. Made life much easier getting on the freeway this morning. Maybe I should just trade everything in on a new Wrangler and go with one vehicle...
Read an in-depth review of the new Rubicon this morning, maybe it will hold you over until Edmunds gets around to reviewing it. Go look in the reviews section of www.cars.com . I can't post the whole link here because it's too long apparently (115 character limit?).
"... Best for now is to mark your email public in your profile so folks can contact you that way."
Maybe if both people are online, you can put up a message saying "try it now" and then toggle it on, then toggle it back off again. The window of a spambot or whatever seeing it is pretty slim.
I am using Compuserve, I think it's v.7.0, but not too sure. I am in the process of dumping my cookies as Tsjay suggested.. We will see if that works...
I "ain't no expert" on this stuff, but I think Compuserve is an Internet service provider (ISP), but Tidester was talking about your browser, e.g., internet explorer or netscape.
As a back up when Gill's is down or for folks who for whatever reason can't get into Gill's, we can chat on AIM.
This is a chat feature that can be downloaded for free from the AOL hompe page, and you DON'T have to be an AOL subscriber to use it.
For those of you who have AOL but have never downloaded AIM, you can chat only with other AOL members, but by downloading the full version of AIM, you can then chat with anyone who also has AIM. (You get some kind of limited instant message feature automatically with AOL membership, but it only allows you to chat with other AOL subscribers)
Put me on your buddy list as tjoh298765 and holler any time you see me online.
Tom, have you ever been to the JNT site and seen them mention going to Gilmer? Gilmer is a private piece of land that you pay to wheel on.
My question is, do you see lots of body damage at Turkey Bay like you do at Gilmer? I think the post I was looking at today had two SWB Jeeps on their side and one LWB Jeep doing some rearranging of the passenger side.
I guess I don't want to go quite that extreme yet. I have to drive this thing to work and I have way to many payments left to make.
I'm considering a brand new or demo Wrangler. Can you recommend them? Are they reliable? How does the 4 cylinder with the 5 speed perform? Is it less/more reliable than the 6?
As for pricing, how much off MSRP can I expect to get on either an SE or X model. The more info the better.
I have found my Jeep to be very reliable, and if you want to read the 7050+ posts in here, you will find VERY few where people mention any problems with their Jeeps.
I don't think there is any difference in the reliability of the old 2.5 L four cylinder and the 4.0 L inline six cylinder. The 03 Wranglers, I believe, have a new type of four cylinder engine, the 2.4 L that is used in Liberties. I don't know anything about the reliability of that engine, but it is supposed to have 27 more horsepower than the old 2.5 L and some more torque.
I would be afraid that, even with the extra horsepower, the 2.4 would not make me a happy camper, since I do a lot of highway driving. I know the old 2.5 L would have been fine for around town and for offroading, but not for highway driving.
As far as price, there just doesn't seem to be the number of people posting in here about how close to invoice they paid for their Jeeps as there was a couple years ago, when I was trying to buy a Jeep. I found that info extremely valuable in helping to know what I should hold out for. I paid $200 over invoice, and at the time, that was just about as good as anyone could get.
If the only way to get a Jeep in your case is to get the SE (four cylinder), then go for it! You will do fine around town and on the trail. If you can afford the X or the Sport, then I recommend you go that route.
Ask all the questions you want to, but you would do well to read some of the old posts in here. A lot of your questions would probably be answered that way, but, ask away, because we love to talk Jeep in this place!
Body damage is pretty rare at Turkey Bay as far as I can tell. No one in the groups I have run with down there has ever gotten body damage.
I know there's always that risk, but I try not to do things that are too crazy. I came close a couple times today, but I didn't get any damage.
I had Thelma Jane laid way over today in a ravine. I was trying to straddle the deepest part, but the right side tires slipped down into the deepest part of the ravine, and old Thelma Jane was leaning way over to the right side. It was really fun, and she crawled right on through the ravine leaned over like that. It was a fairly short distance to the end of the ravine after she got in that position.
I really would like to know more about price. What was your MSRP and what was your 'invoice?"
The Wranger would be my second car - I also have a Boxster, and my wife drives a Suburban. The Wranger would fit nicely in between if I wanted to take my 2 boys fishing or hunting.
I'm actually going to try to read all the previous messages - I'm in Oct. 2000 now.
You can find the invoice price right here in good old Edmunds, except that they do not include the advertising fees, as they tell you they don't.
The ad fees are a legitmate part of the invoice, so don't think the dealer is trying to put one over on you when they say there are ad fees included in the cost to them. Make them SHOW you the invoice, and it should agree with what they give here in Edmunds as invoice price plus the ad fees.
There are two line items on the actual invoice for ad fees. One is national and one is regional. I suppose Edmunds doesn't include them, because the regional one varies in amount from region to region, based on the cost of air time for radio and television commercials.
I think the total for the two ad fees on my invoice was about $300.
My MSRP was $23,870, and I think I got my Jeep for about $22,100, which was $200 over invoice. My Jeep is an 01 Sport.
Just go to the new car section of Edmunds and "build" your Jeep there. You will then get the invoice price minus the ad fees.
If you want to read about my shopping experience when I made the deal on my Thelma Jane, go to her web page.
