I haven't posted for a while, busy w/house remodeling and the like. I was checking the tire pressure on my stock GS-As, 30 x 15 on 9.5 Canyon rims. I saw that the max psi on full load shows as 35psi on the tire sidewall. I checked the pressures and they varied from 36.5 to 37.5 as delivered by the Jeep dealer. For those that have these similar tires, what pressures on you running? I set all the tires to 35psi but it seems a bit low to me visually.
My '01 was delivered with 38psi in the tires. I noticed it on the way home because the Jeep felt really "darty" at highway speed. I've since read that DC ships them high from the factory to prevent any flat spotting during transport. The dealers are suppose to check and reset them, but apparently mine wasn't the only one to miss this. I dropped mine to 32 and everything was much better. The rating on the sidewall is the Max pressure you'd want to run if you were loading the tire at its maximum load capacity. Since the Jeep is pretty light for an SUV, you can get away with a lower pressure. The best way to determine the right pressure is to do the "chalk test" where you take a piece of chalk and draw a couple of lines across the tread from sidewall to sidewall. Drive a few rotations of the tire and check the mark. If the chalk is worn off in the center, but still visible on the edges, too much pressure; if the edges are clear but the center still has chalk, too little pressure. Since your Jeep can vary by 500+ pounds depending on how it's equipped and what you normally carry, this number you get may be a few pounds off from what I used. Temperature will also change the reading in your tires so if you set them in the dead of winter, they'll be off in the summer. I usually try to get close by doing the chalk test and then experiment a pound either way to see if ride or handling gets any better or worse. I swapped my GS-As at around 8k for mud tires and they prefer 28-29psi for best ride and footprint. HTH.
but I was getting info on how to read tire pressures (like...duh...) and such (something about printing the manual for the lowest common denominator or something,LOL). It was late, I was in bed, and just gave up. :-)
Thanks all for the responses. I will lower the pressure today.
Everyone, We got back from Moab this weekend. Moab and the annual Easter Jeep Safari is AWESOME! You should all make the trip next year. Imagine thousands of Jeeps in a little town! Jeeps were everywhere, everything from bone stock to the super customized. We saw people from Ohio, New York, Maryland, Texas, Oregon, Minnesota, Idaho, Colorado, Montana, and more. It was well run and organized. You can go on the official trail runs or go out and explore by yourself. We did both.
Those pics you posted are great! Glad everyone had fun. You sure had some articulation going on in a couple of those shots. Did Ross Allen come with you?
dewars - Glad to hear you had a great time. I really want to get there someday and play, but something always comes up when I start to plan a trip over there. Maybe next year I'll really work at it. So bone stock isn't a problem for some of the trails? Are you going to post pictures some place on the web? I'd be interested in seeing what you did.
tsjay - looks like great fun!
barresa62 - glad you are still around and enjoying your Wrangler. Good question about the tire pressure.
And thanks, twylie, for a good way to check tire pressure that would match your vehicle. I've always wondered about tire pressure and the influence of modifications.
Thanks. It was truly a fun day, as you can see from the pics!
Of course Ross Allen went, Steve! I always get him out, put him on his leash, and get someone to babysit him when I am doing anything kinda risky. Can't have my Bud get hurt! People are always eager to babysit him, cause everybody loves him. He is always a popular guy out on the trails.
Is the Moab and the annual Easter Jeep Safari put-on by the Jeep Factory organization or is it by some local or other type of organization? Last year, I talked to a guy that had been on a Sportsmobile 4x4 Van long weekend outing there and he just loved the area.
Put the Wrangler in the shop on the 9th for a squeal and got a belt, pulley, and tensioner out of the deal. That didn't fix it so they put in a new water pump and I picked it up on the 11th.
Driving home today the check engine light came on. Didn't just fill up with gas and forget to tighten the cap.
My guess is that it is related to the work that was done, loose hose or along those lines.
Drop it off again on Thursday. Kind of a long drive to the dealer, but want to stay with them.
Next week is my one year anniversary. Hum.
Still a happy camper, but just not quite as happy.
The Easter Jeep Safari is hosted by the Red Rock 4-Wheelers 4x4 club which is a local club in the area. Factory people from Jeep usually attend. The area is beautiful with all the red rock and canyons and of course, the Colorado river. You can do a search on the net and get more info. Next years will be the 38th annual.
I was trading in my 99 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4 x 4 for a brand new 2000 Grand Prix GT sedan. It was actually in May sometime that I did the trade.
I only kept the Grand Prix for 8 months before placing the order for Thelma Jane. Thelma was ordered November 16, 2000.
That might be the shortest time I ever kept a brand new vehicle, and what is really odd about it is that I loved that Grand Prix! That was probably the only new vehicle among the many new ones that I had bought that did not have one single little problem of some kind. It never went back to the dealer for even one minor adjustment or anything.
I just HAD to have a Jeep, though. Would have loved to keep the GP and still get a Jeep, but no way could I do that.
Well, all I can say as I look back at what I did is.... I HAVE NO REGRETS!
Thelma Jane has been everything I hoped she would be and MUCH MORE! I had very high expectations, but they have been exceeded by a huge margin.
oceantoad - Sorry to hear about your problems. I really hope they sort them out. Hang in there! Let us know how it goes.
tsjay - Isn't it amazing how the Jeep just gets under your skin and stays there? I still love mine after 5 years. I'm hoping that the weather will continue to be snowy - we're heading for Tahoe the first week in May and if I can't 'wheel, if there is a storm due in I'll have an excuse to take the Jeep over the Taco.
Deb - Sorry to hear that the Blues lost last night. At least the Blues made the playoffs - the Kings didn't even get that far!
I found out today that my Jeep will roll off the assembly line on May 5. I hope to take delivery by the end of that week or early the following week. This will be very close to 7 weeks from my order date of Mar. 21. A little longer than I had expected, but right in the middle of the 6-8 weeks that they told me when I placed the order.
I have a 2000 Jeep Wrangler. I recently noticed that my AC is not blowing out cold air. It's just blowing out regular air as if the vents were turned on. Any advice would be appreciated.
Has anybody found a visor organizer that is small enough to fit on/over the Wrangler sun visors. I keep my console locked most of the time and would like to have a convenient place to keep pens, paper, etc. The ones you get at Wally World are too big and I haven't been able to find others.
Mine isn't working correctly now, either. One of these days I'll take it in to find out what's wrong with it. I've been told that it could be several things - a leak in the line let the coolant out, a seal gave out because I wasn't using it enough and there are other options. Additionally, before mine gave up completely it had a tendency to (I think) ice up. If I turned it off for 5 or 10 minutes, then it would work again. One possible reason for this could be a restriction in the air flow. Maybe as it gets closer to summer I'll do something about it (as you can see, I'm definitely not in the OCD category!).
Work and out-of-town guests have been keeping me busy these days, so I haven't gotten too far with my CB project. I decided to go with the 75 WXST. So...
Bamatazz (Or anybody else, for that matter): Could you describe in a little more detail where and how you mounted the unit?
Am I supposed to connect the red power wire to the battery or the fuse block? The instructions say you can do either. What do you all do?
tsjay: I like the idea of your antenna location. What kind of antenna mount do you have? Obviously, not the kind that the sales guy at Frys had me buy....a glass mount adhesive kind. I think the idea was that I'd be able to stick it to any vertical surface.
What do you folks recommend as far as what kind of antenna and mount goes? Does it not really matter?
And finally, where do you pass the coax cable so that it's not in the way?
Sorry....I can just picture you folks rolling your eyes, but I'm completely new to this and have NO guidance. So help me out.
Don't have time this AM before work, but sometime this weekend, I will take a couple pics for ya to show how my antenna is mounted.
I just ran the coax through the right corner in the gap between the lift gate and the tail gate. This has worked pretty well. Then, I ran the coax under the carpet right along the upper edge of the tub inside the cargo area.
Remember, I have the overhead CB rack, so I ran the coax under the padding of the roll bar to the CB rack. That rack is not necessary and, as I told you before, it cost more than the rest of the stuff together (CB, antenna, coax).
Look for a deposit on your A/C hoses that looks "different" from the normal dirt everywhere else. The fitting on the hose that connected the compressor to the condenser fatigued and went bad over the winter. I noticed an oily residue on the hose this winter and knew I was going to have trouble. The fitting fatigued where it entered the part that is crimped onto the hose.
Many many causes, but only two catagories of a/c failure. One, mechanical......anything from a leaky seal, to a hole in the condenser, to a control system vacuum leak. Two, electrical......easier to find and fix, could be a connector, a switch, a chafed wire, a bad compressor clutch (which could be a mechanical failure as well).
So, you can do the troubleshooting yourself, or take it to a specialist. However, if it's a leak, you'll have to evacuate the system and pull a vacuum on it before refilling. If you don't have the equipment it'll have to go the dealer or a specialist anyway.
Put the Sport in the shop on Thursday for the check engine light. Got the word today that it has a case of the vapors. They had to order a leak detector pump which will be in on Monday. Sounds like a phoney part to me.
And I was hoping to just get a new gas cap.
My boss has his fully loaded Durango in the shop for the check engine light, but at a different dealer. This is his 7th trip for the same problem. He is getting ready to go with the lemon law on it. Next month it will be a year old.
No, it's real. It sucks fuel vapor through the carbon canister. Check Engine Lights are really only for enviromental problems, not to help you. For instance, a low oil pressure will bring up a check gauges light, not the CEL!
What's the actual question? You have a 2002 Cougar on which you've paid off maybe $1500. This means that, unless you made a large down payment, you owe far more than the vehicle is worth. To change it for a Jeep you have two options.
One, sell it privately (to get the best price) and work with the bank to convert the balance you owe into a loan.
Two, trade in at the Jeep dealer. You'll get less for the Cougar but you can roll the balance into the loan for the Jeep.
Neither is a great idea financially. Ask Tom why changing vehicles at short intervals is a bad idea. If you're asking for advice, then it sounds like you're just afloat at the moment....... don't do anything to sink yourself!
Thank God I have found a vehicle that I can "grow old with." Okay, okay... OLDER.
I had traded so often, carrying debt over from each vehicle into the loan for the next vehicle, that I was.... drum roll, please... $8000 upside down on trade in vs. pay off when I made the deal for Thelma Jane! Did I want a Jeep bad or what???
I took out a home equity loan to pay down some of the debt on the Grand Prix, so that I could get financing on Thelma Jane.
Now I have been cured of trading fever. I am still so thrilled with Thelma Jane that I have no desire whatsoever to trade vehicles again. I have made 28 payments on her, and believe me, the honeymoon is still on!
Why didn't I get a Jeep YEARS before I did??? ( Well the Grand Cherokee was a Jeep, but I mean the short wheel base variety.)
Just ask someone to take over your Cougar payments. I've seen this before, and it does work. You can always change the name of the loan. Not sure what it does to your credit rating, or whether it even comes off of your credit...
Well, I think that's true. Try it anyway, and see what happens!
I traded my 02 WRX wagon in on my 03 Sport in January. I was $2800 upside down. Fortunately, the $1000 Chrysler rebate and the prorated refund of $1200 from the unused portion of the extended warranty on the WRX helped ease the financial bite. No regrets here. Just like Tom said; Why I didn't get a Wrangler sooner in my life ???? :-)
Well guys still no build date yet on my Rubicon. Getting a little worried, I just made the cut off for ordering 03 Rubicons. About a week after I placed mine order they stopped accepting them on Rubicons. Hopefully I will know something soon....
I placed my order on 3/21 and did not get a build date until 4/21. Mine is being built on 5/5 and I hope to take delivery by the end of that week (5/9). This will be 7 weeks from the day I placed the order. I am not sure what your exact order date was, but I do remember that you were a couple weeks behind my order date, so I would expect your build date to be coming up soon after mine. Keep in close contact with your dealer, they should have some information for you soon!!
I hope I'm not the bearer of bad news here, but there is a pretty lengthy post from another Rubi ordering indivdual on another board. He seems to have done his homework and it appears that there may be many unfilled Rubicon orders for 2003. If yours goes unfilled, maybe this will give you enough lead time to try and locate one in inventory somewhere.
I may have let the beautiful weather today convince me that it was time to do it, and I may be sorry in a few days, but I took Thelma Jane's top and doors off today.
Hey, Jeep Buds, my little buddy turns 8 years old today. (Well we don't know his exact birthday, since he came from the pound, but from what they told my daughter when she adopted him, it COULD be today, so we have always said April 28th is his birthday.)
Tom
Have you hugged your Jeep (and your Jeep Dog) today?
Any tops off yet? How about doors? I almost regret having a hard top since I have no where to store it and it takes two to remove it. Kinda miss being able to drop the top in five minutes.
Oh well, when winter returns, I'll be glad to have the "tin roof" over my head.
Called DC today and my rubicon is in D1 status, after checking out the link that twylie posted I was a little worried I would not get one.
I even got the VIN for it as well. Hopefully all will go well. I think the estimated build date is 5/8 if I understood them right, but I could be wrong. Now that I have the VIN it will be easier to track.
I pulled my soft top off a month ago and have been running with the duster only when the weather is nice. Been using the seat heaters a bit since our weather has been kooky lately, though. I'm trying to fab up a spot in the garage to store my half doors. I'm going to pick up 4 lower door hinges (side mounted to the tub) and secure these to a vertical 6x6 on the wall. If all goes well, I'll be able to pull the doors and then hang them on my contraption so they'll stay out of the way and folded flat against the wall. Not sure how it will all turn out, but I'll post a link once I've got it finished.
xair - I'm psyched your order got in line. After reading the post on JU, I was worried that you were on the bubble. Great to hear you have a VIN. If your build date is 5/8, you may be in the last run of Rubi's for '03.
I'm thinking about getting a Jeep Wrangler for my next vehicle. Currently there is a $1000 manufacturer's rebate. In the past couple of years what is the largest rebate amount that has been offered on the Wranglers.
They got the leak detection pump in and think they have fixed the check engine light. Now they want to put some miles on it to see if that was really the problem. Also broke the tether on the gas cap so it might be in tomorrow since they ordered it today. The guy who is head of the service department is going to drive my Sport to his house tonight and back in the morning. That will put about 90 miles on it. Hope they pay for the gas or at least wash the thing.
Going to have to talk the service guy into a short wheelbase to go along with the GC that he drives.
Hope to get the Jeep back tomorrow since it will be a year tomorrow since I picked it up. It came in a year ago today to the dealer.
Ross Allen, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I hope that your "driver" at least picked you up a Big Mac on the way home from work.
As a matter of fact, I DID stop at Mc Donalds on the way home, but Ross Allen gets plain hamburgers. He loves those things better than anything in the world! I brought him one home for his birthday present.
Hope everything is cool with your Jeep, Toady. It would be a shame not to have her on your first anniversary. Hope ya get her back tomorrow.
I have not seen any rebates for Wranglers higher than the current $1000 since I got interested in Jeeps almost three years ago. I was led to believe that rebates of any size were almost unheard of for Wranglers until the last couple years.
Don't forget, as an added incentive to buy now, you get the 7 year/ 70K mile warranty.
