My 2004 Odyssey is having similar problems. Compressor turns on when A/C is turned on and blows cold for about 5 minutes. Then the compressor kicks on and off continually and doesn't produce any cooling. This A/C hasn't been charged or worked on since the last charge in 2007 because it has good pressure (30-35 psi low side pressure) while running and has cold A/C when it works. I am curious what you found to be the cause of your problem, or if anyone esle can give me any input. Thanks.
Erick
I guess, these new cars electrical systems are so different. It used to be on older cars, that if the battery was bad or low on juice, then all systems would go off at the same time.
The way the symptons on this van appeared threw me off and I thought for sure that it was the AC and I was looking at a $1000 repair.
Anyhow, good luck to you.
Terry
As in the initial problem, symptoms are that the AC will blow cold air at times only. Fan works well.
Any ideas where else to look? I know it's not a freon leak, as AC will blow cold air when it wants to.
Much appreciated,
regards.
Now there's a low metallic whirr when the car starts, that gets very low as it's on. The dash lights and heater work.
Firestone wanted to replace our A/C compressor for $1K. Said the clutch and pulley assembly on the front of the compressor "went bad", and that's why there was a grinding sound. Said the smell was the freon escaping.
Said it would be throwing off metal pieces that might stop the power steering.
Opinion?
They want to do the repair with a remanufactured part.
Please help!!!
Honda needs to "beef up" their warranty or people will start looking elsewhere!
I'm hugely disappointed in Honda. What is next to go wrong? I have purchased Hondas for the past 20-30 years because of their quality. I'm not sure if my next vehicle will be a Honda.
I bought the part at the dealer today for $75 and replaced it myself... A/C is up and running and fan works at all speeds again.

Page 6 has the instructions. Good luck.
If you don't have that relationship - you're probably out of luck.
Most dealerships have "silver bullets" they can use for good customers. I know I could go to my dealership with my 2000 Ody with 105K if the tranny went and they'd find a way to help me out. I do all my service there and give them high scores. They like me since I'm a profitable customer and they are willing to go the extra mile. Too many folks forget that.
I have a 2005 EX Odyssey that is having consistent A/C problems. Had a relay replaced and it ran well for 2 months and then stopped. There is no leak, ac refrigerant is well above min and below max, new filters, there is a road guard on it to protect the compressor, and fuses all check. The belts seem fine, I will take another look to make sure. The compressor seems to be engaging but no cold air, just hot. Fan is fine, loud but fine. Any thoughts? Alternator? Belts? Clutch? Transistor?
I have a good napa shop I can take it too, once fixed my ac on an F150 for 1 hour shop labor because the clutch wasn't fully engaging. A washer did the trick. I'm sure the dealer would've replaced the entire thing for $1500. So I trust this shop but if I can try a simple fix today that'd be fantastic.
BTW, worked for a GMC dealer for 2 years. I have my reasons for not trusting dealers. If you feel as if you can trust a dealer when you buy a car to have shown you the best price on the sticker then you can pay for the dealers maintenance I guess, otherwise, run.
I just spoke with Honda Factory Rep, no help there. I just wish they notified me about the problem, I would have gladly paid to have the protective screen around it before the rock incident happened. My vehicle has only 27965 miles on it. I am not very pleased with Honda at this time, I have to wonder what other time bombs they are not telling anyone about. My first experience with Honda and probably my last. So much for listening to Consumer Reports.
We have a 99 Mountaineer that has never had the A/C even topped off and you can hang meat in it on a hot Summer day.
The part listed above that some have replaced will fix a fan speed problem, but apparently not a temp control problem. There is a thermister located elsewhere that is hard to get to that may be the problem I have. Your & my problem appear to be the same and different to most of the others mention in this list. :confuse:
Now two weeks later the front blow fan does not work at all, but cold air "seeps" slowly from the front vents. The back fan is fine. Specialist took a look and figured the fan motor was deteriorating. Tapping and wiggling it hard caused it to blow harder, but now it won't even respond to that. Specialist recommended replacing the unit, which I have done (thanx AutoZone)...but the new unit still will not engage. Suggestions?
Also, the defroster will not clear the windows. this is becoming a safety issue. :lemon:
Part # 39794-S0K-A01 RELAY ASSY., POWER (4P) (MICRO ISO) (OMRON), or
Part # 80560-S0X-A01 THERMISTOR, AIR CONDITIONER.
A diagram and pictures can be found at (If you put in your Honda Information):

The relay appears to control the fan, and not be this problem. So it may be the Thermistor? :confuse:
My front heater and AC are not working. Don't want to spend an arm and a leg if there is something I can do on my own. I see many had this issue on different models. It's cold in winter and would be nice to have the front heater. I am overworking my rear heater (as it works) to heat the car before stepping into the car :-( Please help! Thanks much in advace and a Happy New Year!

I began to think Honda is ripping its customers off by selling detective products. My Odyssey has not only air conditioning problem, but also transmission, steering pump and brake problem. My Odyssey is the most expensive and has most problems vehicle that I have ever own.
Must be either a creature of habit or like to subject myself to more hardship, but I actually like the Odyssey when it works...so bought the 2011. At the dealership looking at their warranty, the sales rep warned about "ghosts in the machine" that should be tackled when first evident. Reminded me how the old van for months had issues like rear windows not responding, sliding doors opening on their own, the back light for the odometer not working... little things that I could deal with. Letting these things go without attention could perhaps result in the larger problems I faced later. Lesson learned for me.
I bought 2012 ODY EX april(2012) ,I am closing 4000k looks like I have problem with the Third row window side cup holder area warming -up !!! you canot keep your hands on the passenger side third raw cupholder area,I dont see anything scraching there or any heat building up on the driver side third raw cup holder area....... any clue ?? I did not go to the dealer yet . l am just started enjoying it** looks I did a bad choice than Sienna...............any comments please, :confuse:
Thanks.
"Your compressor failed for a reason. The number 1 reason is contamination in the system. Cleaning out this contamination is crucial to ensuring that the new compressor is not also contaminated. Always flush and evacuate before changing parts. Always use A/C system flush solvent. If it is not perfectly clean after the flush and vacuum, we recommend re-flushing the system."
My Atlanta Honda dealer botched my A/C system repair by initially just installing a new compressor and running the system to note poor performance. Only then did they inspect the accumulator/drier (replacement of this part is REQUIRED by every compressor manufacturer as part of the warranty) and noted it was leaking desiccant balls and other black junk into the system. THEN they decided to flush only the evaporator line and replace the clogged dryer and also the contaminated condensor (the A/C radiator at the front of the car, often difficult to flush). This is noted right on my invoice! The invoice doesn't mention cleaning or replacing the expansion valve nor purging the other line - things any half-trained A/C technician would have done. Obviously, my new compressor now has it's oil flooded with seven years of accumulated black crud. So I just paid $2,000 for a brand new compressor which WILL fail prematurely.
I have a case open with Honda corporate to see what they can do given that the repair ddn't follow the Honda's - or anyone's - service procedures. You have to watch your dealer closely to ensure they perform the A/C repair correctly. The warranty on the repair will be only 90-days labor / 12 -months parts so, if the new compressor fails again within a year, you get to hassle with them all over again on the labor. After a year, you're just out another $1,500-$1,800.
Bottom line: Honda said repairing a contaminated A/C system just by replacing one part at a time was “proper”. The attempted over-charges and commission wrangling are solely between me and the dealership. Honda suggested I contact the dealership Service Manager again to see if he can explain what they had previously refused to explain. In a word, Honda offered me NOTHING.
If you’re looking for Honda dealer service in downtown Atlanta, you’d be wise to go far North (Woodstock, Georgia) or far South (Morrow, Georgia) instead. Even then, ask in advance to insure that your Service Advisor will be working the next day too in case your car needs to stay overnight. If anyone quotes you a price over the phone, get their full name to avoid hassles over service prices and commissions. Better yet, find a small, local shop who works off their reputation and repeat customers instead.
and replaiced,still same problem.
Any idea please?
Thanks
