2003 Mercedes ML 500. Can I replace the crank shaft position sensor myself?

My mechanic told me that he couldn't fix the sensor because there is a NHTSA bulletin that says to reprogram the computer before replacing the part on any ML before 2004. I'm pretty handy, but doing brain surgery if beyond me.

Looks like this does need some "re-initialization" procedure after it is installed, using STAR DIAGNOSIS.
