Experimenting with different viscous fluids in the centre differential to try to make that "useless" AWD system function better that with just having FWD ;-)

Edit:I did read some of the posts in the archives but I still haven't found an answer.

I bought my 2002 Coach Edition 2WD a few months ago and have been very happy with it. It did not come with a tow package so I recently bought a Hidden Hitch and installed it along with the wiring harness adapter to hook up to my trailer. I installed the 20 amp fuse under the hood where it says "towing" and thought I was good to go, right?

WRONG! There is no power coming out of the factory towing harness plug. I know the fuse is good and I checked the trailer lights. All checks out well. I thought there was a problem with the vehicle so my wife takes it to the dealer. They proceed to tell her that if you didn't purchase the $1200(?!) "towing package", the harness will not work. They want $500 to retrofit some sort of "brain" to allow the harness to work.

Have any of you ever heard of this before? Is this something new to the RX300 lineup? The instructions for the hitch and adapter make no mention of this, nor does the Lexus Owner's Manual. The wiring adapter is the 4-wire flat style at one end and the 4-prong square Toyota style at the other end.

I called Lexus HQ and they did confirm that this is true! This is a first for me. The service advisor at the dealership stated we should have purchased the $1200 "towing package" and that by using an aftermarket trailer hitch, we could void our warranty.

What the hell difference does it make if I use an overpriced Lexus trailer hitch or one that is well designed and manufactured by a respected name? Besides, the vehicle didn't come equipped with the factory towing package.

The gentleman at Lexus was going to contact the dealership to see if there is anything he can do to satisfy this complaint. At least, that is what he said.

I am taking a trip up into the N. Ga mountains in the next 3 weeks and am not too happy about all this.

Is there something I need to modify to make this work?

Have you installed the converter module which mounts using the two pre-installed studs in the LHS of the cargo area and connects to the nearby pre-wired pigtail?

By the way, I just installed a Hidden Hitch. It seems well-built (sturdy)and I like the angled contour which follows the shape of the back of the car, but what do you think of the paint job on it? Maybe, it's the matte finish instead of being semi-gloss, but the paint didn't strike me as being too robust. Seems a bit thin where there was a couple of small scrapes (albeit on the bracket mounting surfaces which gets hidden anyway).

Anyone who has had a Hidden Hitch for some time....how is it holding up?

I just read your post again more carefully and maybe some more detail is in order:

I ordered the 2002 tow package kit from lexuspartsmall.com for about $430. I sent it back in the end because I found that my RX was not pre-wired as the dealer thought, but anyway I got to see what was in the kit and got to read the instructions There were three 'items" in the box. The receiver; a mounting kit (included additional brackets which bolt to the receiver on order to use an extra mounting hole on the side of the box frames - which aftermarket hitches don't seem to use) and a wiring kit.
The wiring kit contained a wiring harness - the one you probably already have-, a 20amp fuse, and a toyota brand converter module (maybe the "brain" your dealer referred to).
The instructions said to install the receiver (same as the Hidden Hitch installation but with the extra brackets). Then install the wiring harness - the flat-4 connector has a small bracket which screws to the receiver, the other end connects to a pigtail of the vehicle wiring harness inside the black plastic cover underneath the cargo area (you've probably already done this). Then, install the converter. If you hinge up the cargo area floor and remove the spare wheel cover there should be a couple of studs on the left between the storage box and the back of the seat. The converter mounts on these. Also in the same area there should be a wiring harness with a pigtail connector splitting off from it. This plugs into the converter. The instructions said to actually remove the cargo area floor and the storage box but it didn't look to me as if that should be absolutely necessary - however, I may be wrong - my RX doesn't have the studs and pigtails and I may have been off in my visualization from the sketches in the instructions. Lastly you install the fuse. The top-left-most fuse position (as you look with the fuse panel the right way up), I think - but I'm working from memory.

The wiring kit with converter you should be able to buy separately from the receiver from irontoad or lexuspartsmall (aka NorthShore Lexus in Wisconsin)for about $85. I believe the part number is 08921-48070 - but you'd better check.

I just bought the Michelin Cross Terrains for my wife's 2000 AWD RX-300. They ride great, but unfortunately we are going to have to sell the car because she got a job that provides a vehicle. How depressing because we love the SUV. It's been a blast watching all the posts and I hope to join the RX-330 postings when we decide to get a new vehicle in the future.
  • kmouradiankmouradian Member Posts: 44
I think you are right. The only parts I received was the hitch and the adapter. I did not receive a converter. I posted this on the Club Lexus forums and someone with an '02 model is going through the exact same thing right now. The general consensus is that Lexus changed the way the RX's were wired, most likely in '01 when they changed a few other things as well. In speaking with a few 99 and 00 owners, they said their adapter worked without a converter. It seems pre-01's do not need this converter and post '01's do. Wish I had known that beforehand. Thanks for the info. I will look up the part number and order it via mail. To think my local Lexus dealer wanted $270 for the same part!

As far as the Hidden Hitch itself goes, I have only had it on for about a month. Like you said, very sturdy but the paint does look a bit thin. Probably because of the flat black. I am not going to complain about it because the hitch has a good reputation, it looks great, and I only paid $100 for it via etrailer.com. If push comes to shove, I could always remove the hitch and spray paint it with a nicer semi-gloss black finish.

    Thanks again for the info!

I've had the Hidden Hitch on my 99 RX for about three years now. Still looks very much like new, said to be powder-coat, rated for 500 hour salt spray corrosion protection.

Pete - thanks - it's good to know that the Hidden Hitch paint has withstood those Tonawanda
    winters.

kmouradian - hmm, strange. I thought the '99s and '00s would also need a converter to combine brake lights and turn signals for the trailer and to follow the recommendation to isolate trailer circuits from the vehicle's lighting circuits (and other more sensitive electronics such as the computer)by drawing trailer power directly from the battery. Maybe they have separate stop/turn lights on their trailers and use a 7-pin connector instead of the flat 4-pin? Maybe with no isolation, warranties are indeed at risk?

By the way, I made a typo in last post. 2001/2002 factory tow hitch kit was more like $330 from lexuspartsmall, not $430.

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED TO ME!! I added the Hidden Hitch, wiring harness, fuse and had NO POWER. This happened on our 2001 RX. I'm very good with electronics and couldn't figure it out! So, like you I took it into the dealer...guess what? They fixed it! No charge! I asked what they had found and they said that they replaced a wiring harness, but in fact I imagine that they just added the converter! Damn, I guess they could have played hard nose, but they simply fixed it and said "Thank you". Good Dealer.

How come the ES has it but RX doesnt? The specs say it doesnt work the way I want it to. Basically I want to be able to listen to the stereo and windows/moonroof as long as I am inside the car.

Is there anyway this could be done as DIY? Maybe wwest can take it as a weekend project :)

After hearing the story about the torque wrench on his running Lexus, I'm not sure how much more we should encourage him!

"Usually includes a transmission oil cooler, mounted in the front of the right front fender well, a larger, higher colling capacity radiator, etc.

Most climate control automatically go to "fresh" from recirc on activation of any defog mode, partial or full.

The torque wrench didn't go on until I had already confirmed that slight but firm palm pressure on the tread would prevent the engine torque from turning the wheel.

The RX will allow you to use the accessory power once the key is removed from the ignition. However, once you open a door, the power is cut-off. So to use this feature, you can't open any door. Hope this helps. Steve

Anyone out there that has 2 car seats in the back, can a full size adult also fit comfortably in the back seat?
  • rlui1rlui1 Member Posts: 93
I had two car seats in my RX this past weekend - a forward-facing on the left and a rear-facing in the middle. The rear-facing base covered the buckle for the right seat so my wife couldn't sit there legally. I wish the buckle system was designed differently. My much smaller Jetta still allows passengers to buckled in on both sides of the rear-facing car seat.
  • raddboy41raddboy41 Member Posts: 249
Believe it or not, this was the reason why we upsized to a Sequoia from the RX300. My wife is only 5'8" at around 130 and she couldn't fit between the two car seats in the back, one facing forward (3 yr. old) and one facing backward(newborn). I'm sure it will depend somewhat on the specific car seats you have, but generally speaking, there's just not enough room.

My coolant recovery tank always has coolant on the top of it which time becomes a pink crusty mess. The dealer has looked at it twice but it still leaks at the top. The coolant level is perfect & the car never runs hot. Any ideas. It makes the engine compartment look sloppy & drives me crazy.

Hey guys check this out. My 01 RX needs tires so went to Sears this week (used to be NTW) and got a price of $155.99 each for Michelin Cross Terrains which includes lifetime balance/rotation, and valve stems. Went to Costco today and got a price of 139.99 for same tire, lifetime balance/rotation and valve stems. Seemed like a fair price. Didn't have any in stock so the lady said she would have to order them. I took out my credit card to give her a deposit and she very quietly said "why don't you wait about 3 weeks--Michelin is going to have a special promotion and the tires will be $60 each less than they are now". That's a very good deal I think for Michelin C/Ts. $80 bucks a tire with lifetime balance/rotation is about as good as you can get I think for these tires. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen this good a deal on Michelins. Makes them cost less than the Dueler HLs that Fantom put me onto and which I had planned to get.
  • pschiffepschiffe Member Posts: 373
    Hey Ron,
I'm about ready also, do you know if that deal will be only at Costco? We don't have one in these parts, or is that a promotion that should be available from any Michelin dealer? TIA

Thanks for all your replays. Brought my RX300 back to the dealer yesterday (after you don't know how many conversations) and finally got the issue resolved!!! It seems that the Air Recirculation system is on it's on control system and it can be re-programmed. The factory default is "On" no matter what - dumb dumb!!! Had the dealer re-program the recirculate default to "Off", now I can tell the system when I want to recirculate the air not the other way around. One little pain put to rest!
  • trmgatrmga Member Posts: 50
Pete--It may just be in conjunction with Costco only. Talked to a guy at NTW/NTB/Sears today and he couldn't find anything in his computer that indicated any special deal on Michelins this month. Will let you know if I hear of it somewhere else.
  • jiaminjiamin Member Posts: 556
I wonder if I could buy a set and save Costco's installation and lifetime balance/rotation for later, as my RX has only got 14K miles. I'll ask Costco about this.
  • lordkamalordkama Member Posts: 23
What do you all think about the 15,000 mile service where they retorque flange bolts, transmission service, replace AC cabin filter, and etc.?

Oil changes I do about every 5000 miles.

    Thanks for your help!
  • gsenthilgsenthil Member Posts: 154
If the changes in ML are any indication, you can guess where the RX would go...

I sent an email to Michelin Customer Support inquiring about the "Costco" promotion. Will post results here. Checked pricing at BJ's, $132.99 less $7.50 coupon good 10/5 - 10/11/02, $125.49 ea. net. Includes lifetime balancing, flat repair, rotation, road hazard warranty, mounting & valve stem and old tire disposal & recycling.

I think you will find the deal offered by COSTCO in the next few weeks will be a discount of $60.00 on a SET of four Michelin tires. This deal is usually offered twice a year on different brand names. Personally I think the cross terrains are a bit too aggressive and will spoil the smooth ride of my RX, although Michelin is a top rated quality tire.
  • fantomfantom Member Posts: 211
Which is just as good, if not a better tire than the Michelin. Better warranty, same wear, more attractive, great ride, excellent wet handling, but less name recognition and advertising...so less expensive.

10,000 miles of happy driving on them. Maybe Bridgestone should be paying me to plug'em...nah.
  • silly1040silly1040 Member Posts: 48
As soon as someone can confirm if the $60 is applied to each tire or to a set of four, please post. My wife is still driving around on our spare. We are looking at the Bridgestone Dueler H/L for $94 a tire. But we will buy the Michelin's for $78 a tire.
  • pschiffepschiffe Member Posts: 373
Seems like $60 per set rather than each is the more likely Michelin promotion. With respect to the Bridgestone Dueler H/P, it appears that they don't come in P225/70R16 size which is what my 99 RX takes! What size Duelers have others used on the RX?

    Pete
  • pschiffepschiffe Member Posts: 373
That should apparently be Bridgestone Dueler H/L rather than H/P. I re-read the previous posts and noted my error, sorry for the confusion.

  • mooretorquemooretorque Member Posts: 241
pschiffe, for informational purposes, 235/70R16 can be used with no clearance problems and no spacers if you don't mind the discrepancy in speedo/odometer (approx 4%).
  • johnsac2002johnsac2002 Member Posts: 4
The P235 70R 16 is exactly the size I intend an purchasing next week. I think I have settled on BIG O Big Foot. These are the old style bigfoot with two aquatread grooves down the center of each tire. Not too aggresive, but overall a nice looking tire that puts more rubber on the road; unlike junk stock Goodyear Integrity's. New style bigfoot just came out but look too aggressive and cost more as well. Old style can be had for around $100.00 per tire. These are rated as 60,000 mile tires. Personally, I have always had good luck with Big O tires.

Best offer I've received for a 2002 Lexus 2WD (no navigation) is $34,000. I see the edmunds TMV is $31,699.

Has anyone out there actually paid TMV for an RX300?
  • mrrogersmrrogers Member Posts: 391
One problem is that most RX300's on dealer lots have the Premium Value Package, Accessory cross bars, Cargo mat, Wheel locks, and Cargo net. In Southern California, carsdirect.com is offering this car at $32,890 including freight. I was quoted a price of $700 by a Lexus dealer to have the car shipped from California to Ohio. That is within $410 of your $34,000 price when you add in shipping. If you really don't want the Premium Value Package, you could order a 2003 which has sunroof standard at $1,400 over invoice at carsdirect.com in southern California. Prices are higher in other areas of the country. Dealers have told me we have until the end of January to order a 2003 as the longer, wider 2004 is coming out next Spring. Good luck.

Did you guys receive an invite in the mail to a preview event for the GX470 on Monday ???. It will be at the dealer, Valet, Coctails, desserts. Hey free food, I am there

By the way my Car & Driver was twice as thick this month, Kia had a huge ad for Sorrento. I know exactly how much Kia spend on R&D for Sorrento ($36,100 + desintation), cause all they did was buy an RX300 and Duplicate it. There are so many similarities even the little drawer by the Driver's Left Knee. Come One. Rip Off !!!.

Kia does show a slick Roof Box that would look nice on the RX. Gonna get more info on that

The dealer in Shreveport, LA always beats TMV- we have bought a 1999 rx300 a few years ago and a coach edition rx300 this year.

This is a follow-up to my post of Oct. 4th. I have not had the courtesy of a reply to my email to Michelin about the "Costco" promotion. As John (johnsac2002) suggested, $60.00 per set rather than each is probably the more likely discount. Since there's no Costco in this area it's a moot point anyway. I did price the Bridgestone Dueler H/L at several local dealers. Quotes ranged from a low of $100.88 (with dealer coupon) to a whopping $166.11, this is for full service mount, balance, new stem and disposal etc. That compares favorably to several prices I sourced on the Internet. Best deal I found on the Michelin Cross Terrain was at BJ's for $125.49 (with coupon). Not as much of a price differential as I had hoped for, but; I guess I'll save the hundred bucks and buy the Duelers. Thanks Gary (fantom) and Ron (trmga) for sharing your experiences.

I agree with rxlax that the Kia Sorento is almost an exact copy of the RX300 - the Koreans are the masters in the art of copying.

I visited a dealer for rx for wife yesterday in san diego. 8 on lot. fwiw pricing if $37,346 4 2wd & value package. Cars direct same price, edmunds same price. The product does not seem to have any discount! I am stalling as my 5 year old is going to make short work of that new car and I just can't quite get over the money for a kid hauler. I do know in the end, it is a great product & SUV, if you got to have one.

    I am satisfied with H/Ts.

Got them from TireRack for $72 + shipping. Local shop mounted them for $10 each.
  • mrrogersmrrogers Member Posts: 391
I used zipcode 91311 when I found the carsdirect.com discount on the 2003 RX300. That zipcode is for Chatsworth, CA just north of LA. Do you think they will get cheaper in January at the end of the 2003 model year?
It is a lot of money. Thomas Stanley, author of "The Millionaire Next Door" mentions in one of his books that most American millionaires drive Fords. He also mentions that he personally likes to buy used high end Acura, Infiniti, and Lexus autos to minimize his depreciation. Maybe your 5 year old would be better off in a used RX300? Good luck.

We live in San Diego and purchased a 2wd RX300 with premium package in March of 2002 (they all come with this package). We had no luck negotiating with the local dealers Kearny Mesa & Carlsbad Lexus. We eventually purchased it from the Internet Sales Manager of Mission Viejo Lexus for $32,745 with wheel locks & mats. This was below invoice accordinf to my calculations, so we jumped on the deal. The entire transaction went very smoothly and they were extremely professional and courteous. I recommend you try them for the 03 RX, as they will quote you a price via e-mail.
  • kclkkclk Member Posts: 11
Thank you for the suggestion of Mission Viejo Lexus. I travel to LA and will stop in there next time. Mission Viejo Lexus also seems to have a more complete web presence. More choices the better!

Sorento is a truck based rear wheel drive vehicle with a transfer case and a full frame. The motor goes north and south, not east and west. RX300 is a car based soft roader that is based on the Toyota Camry chassis. It has no transfer case and the two wheel drive model is a front driver. Other than some superficial cosmetic features, there are no resemblances. The RX300's drive line and chassis is more Toyota Sienna mini van than sport utility.

My apologies for some bum dope I put out on those Michelins CTs a week or so ago. John was correct in thinking that the $60 discount was for all 4 tires. If I had engaged my brain before posting I would have realized that. Brings the price to $133.99 for MCTs at Costco. Also $115.99 for Dueler HLs at Cotco. Price of course includes mounting, lifetime rotate/balance, stems, etc. Guess I'll go with the Dueler HLs that fantom recommends. My 01 RX 300 takes a 255/70/16 as opposed to the 225 on the '99. Thanks to all for your helpful comments.

what are some other owners comments on the RX300 stereo? How come Toyota highlander has 8 speakers and ours has 7????? Inspectdg.
  • Traded in a 99ES300 Coach for a 2002 RX300 Coach, Burnished Gold Metallic with gold package and pinstripes. Looks great! Drove RX's before and loved them. Like the higher ride and other SUV advantages. Own a minivan also, and may not go back to cars. On the stereo from inspectdg, I test drove a highlander and the stereo is not up to par with the RX pioneer system. The pioneer is very good, but a tad below the nakamichi in my ES. Especially at higher volumes. I'll miss the Nak. Main question for current RX owners is anyones experience on wet and snow covered roads with the stock Dueler H/T's. They are not rated as well as the H/L's and Michelin CT's, but I like their look over the Integrity's and Michelin's.

ATF should be checked for burnt smell and color about every 25k miles but unless you tow don't expect to need to change it out before about 125k.

Fuel filters only need to be changed out if conditions warrant it, mechanics diagnostic say.
