I've seen the Hidden Hitch information posted recently, but thought I would ask again.

I need a hitch for my '98 Trooper. JC Whitney appears to have them. My question is 'Do I need a wiring harness to wire the Hidden Hitch to my Trooper or does the harness from the trailer mate with the vehicle wiring?'

If anyone has the part numbers from JC Whitney for the hitch, wire harness and whatever else I may require, I would appreciate the input.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
You do need a harness it's call a "T" connector, and JC Whitney sells em for like $25. This plugs into a connector in the side-wall of the truck underneath, and has a flat 3 conductor (+1 ground) wire used on conventional boat and utility trailers.

    I have 3 quick questions:

    - my 99 Trooper's brakes seem to "modulate" a bit when depressed. Do you think the pads are developing flat spots? Or maybe its the master cylinder? (truck has 26K miles)

    - when I restart the truck with a warm engine it doesn't maintain its idle (it bounces between 0 and 1000 rpms). Once I give it some gas though it smooths out. Any thoughts?

    - has anyone bought the 3rd row offered by littlepeopleseats.com? any experiences you can offer would be helpful.

    Thanks,
    Phil

I too test drove many 2001 Trooper S models. Probably at least 12 and they all had vibration and shimmy in the steering at speeds over 65-70mph. I really wanted to buy one as the dealers in Atlanta will sell a 2-wheel S for appx. $19000.00 new. I finally gave up and ordered a Highlander.

PS I had one dealer rebalance the tires and retested the vehicle, still had the shimmy.

    Hi,

I just wanted to know how you all use the Power Drive button on the transmission. I am a new owner of a 2001 Trooper. I find that the car is much more responsive in Power Drive mode. How much am I losing in gas milage? Does it hurt the car to keep it in Power Drive? Can I just hit the button whenever I feel like it or should I be driving below a certain speed?

    Thanks,

    Charles

BTW - My 2001 S does not shimmy or shake above 65. It did when I first had it, but the tires were inflated to 44 PSI when I picked it up from the dealer. I corrected the inflation and the car feels great.

Well, just purchased a new mica red 4X4 LS yesterday. Price including moon roof, trailer hitch, bug deflector, cargo mat and get this - after marget leather (with "Trooper" etched in the seat backs) for $25,600 not including sales tax (4%) and dock fee ($288). For an additional $600 I had them add on the temperature, compass, altitude box that normally comes on the Limited. Didn't know you could do this but with the moon roof the wiring is already in place. Felt this was an offer I couldn't refuse. The drive to work this morning - even in rush hour was flat [non-permissible content removed] cool. - good sounding stereo. Does anyone know if you can get day time driving lights to activate in this vehicle - I know the Canadian version has them - my bet is that there is an easy solution to the US sold versions. Sales staff also warned me to install a wire and small key lock on the spare tire cover latch to prevent theft of what I am sure is a pricy item.

Welcome to the fold. Check out http://isuzu-suvs.com, and if you find a way for DRLs to be installed write-up an article for the how-to section. Be forewarned that the outside temp guage will not work properly in stop and go traffic. It is mounted right in front of the radiator and will result in temps of >125-150 degrees. Once you are moving it will be fine. That's a great price. I paid $26,500 last year for my 00 LS 4wd, w/o leather, and my dealer was cutting me a great deal since I know him.

As for the spare tire cover, they are about $250 to replace, but I've never had a problem, even parking mine in the worst areas of NYC overnight.

As for the shimmy, I'm not sure why, but I inflate my tires to 37F, 42R and never have a problem even up at 100+mph.

MONTANABILL - You SCORED, that's one of the best deals I've seen posted on here. Didn't know the moonroof was wired for the compass. Good luck, your going to love this truck.

Charles - for the past year I've used the power mode 24/7 and drive 80% HWY and get 17 mpg. (I don't use it on the fly) I've got 49K W/no tranny problems.
  • jimmyp1jimmyp1 Member Posts: 640
Power drive - I also use it 24/7, mainly because I have slightly oversized tires and I noticed a slight drop in performance once they were on. I shift into, and out of, power drive on the fly all the time. My wife turns it off, I turn it on. I actually used it when I had the stock tires just because I liked the shift points better. No problems to report. My hunch is that the transmission is being used more efficiently when it's on. No bogging down and/or delays in downshifting = less load on inappropriate gears = less heat = longer life.

Basketballkid - Never had the brake modulation problem or the bouncy idle, someone here will have some advice I'm sure. I'm going to look at the third row seats website. I know Paisan has a link to an overseas version in his website (see above for a link).

Paisan - Wow, you are getting lower quotes for the spare tire cover than I have ever gotten. They are essentially $500-$600 here. Also, why so high on the rear tire pressure, out of curiosity? If anything, I do it in the opposite way, lower in the back, higher in the front, engine weight, etc. Is it because you tow so much?

Can't get that website to come up. Code red? Something else?

Power Mode: I use it when I know I'm going to need passing or merging power. Other than that I like the smoothness of the std. shift points. I don't think it will harm it to have it on 24/7

Littleseats: I have a link on my page to the little seats. I know of a person who has one installed, they love it. I've been trying to get the real isuzu 3rd row, but to no avail from overseas.

Tire Pressure: The manual calls for 30Front/35rear, not sure why they call for higher in the rear, and I usually run 5psi higher give or take a few.

Brake Pulsing: Could be abs sensors? Did you have the tires rotated recently or taken off? The shop could have overtightened the lug nuts. This happens often, most shops don't use a torque wrench and overtighten, which can warp the rotors. Also they can cause the threads to be cross-threaded on the lugs and snap them off too.

bouncy idle: sounds like the intake manifold gasket. seems to be a problem in about 20% of the trucks, maybe less.

I think I covered all the bases here.

I noticed that once or twice after the engine was hot and turning it off then starting a few minutes later. Never persisted though and could be a vapor lock type thing once in a while.

I had the bouncy idle for a few months and decided this isn't right so i called my dealer. They told me they were aware of such a thing on the 2000 model (sorry i don't know about the 99 model). They told me I needed a flash update for my Power Control Module. I took it in two Mondays ago and they tried to do the flash (which I guess is a reprogramming of the computer). During the reprogramming the Power Control Module failed. That meant I had to leave it until they could get me a new one. It took two days for them to get one so I had a crappy Cavalier rental (paid for by Isuzu) to putt putt around in! While it was in the shop they also repaired the fuel line for the recall on the vehicle. I have it back now and it seems to be running fine.

Hello everyone! I have a 2001 Trooper S which I bought new in March, 2001. I have only put on 380 miles upto now since I've been driving my leased car which I just returned. I guess my question is when should I do the first oil change? I'm getting into the fifth month now and still have the same oil. The manual says it has special oil in it and to follow the maintenance schedule for the first oil change (for break-in reasons). I'll probably have 3000 miles on it by end of September. Thats quite some time, considering it has factory oil in it which will be around a year old by then. Any comments, suggestions on this? For now I'm going to wait till I hit 3000 miles before changing the oil. After the first oil change I 'll be back to every three months, even though I put on less than 3000 miles every 3 months. Thanks...
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
My truck sat for almost a year from production to when I drove it. 3K miles is a good place for the first oil change. Good luck and welcome to the group! Check out http://isuzu-suvs.com for more info.

Hi all..I went to the only Isuzu dealer here in Austin, TX yesterday to trade-in my 99 Trooper Ltd to possibly buy an Axiom XS.Well, they only offered my 16k for my trade...while Edmunds and Kelley Blue Book rate it from anywhere between 17500-18300..Any ideas as to why they would make such a crappy trade-in offer (has 20,000 miles on it, no wrecks or dings)? Especially since i was trying to take one of their Axioms off of their hands...:) By the way, I traded in a 98 Trooper S with them when I got my 99 and I'm pretty sure the offered me MORE for that one..!!

Any thoughts on what a fair trade value should really be? If I can't swing it, I may just keep my Troop, put Rancho's on it and keep it..

    Hey montanabill2,

Those "Trooper" monogrammed seats sound cool.
If you have a digital camera, why not take a picture of them and post it here for us to see.

I have the leather package on my 1999 Trooper but are not lettered with "Trooper".

I noted on EBAY that there is a windshield film with "Trooper" on it that looks cool.

    Leather
I notice that somebody is offering an aftermarket leather kit on Ebay for the Trooper for $599. I will consider doing that after a few years if the cloth seats start looking worn. Will just have a professional upholstery company install it. Figure for $1000 installed, you got leather!

    99trooper
I went to check out the Axiom the other day while I was at the dealership. Don't know about you but....I gotta say that don't see trading my Trooper for an Axiom. At least not right now while I'm still infatuated with my new 2001 S. Just so much more room and better seating position in the Trooper than in the Axiom. My sales rep told me that the Axiom is not selling well mainly because of the color of the interior. "Nobody likes it!" he says. I have to agree that it takes some getting used to. They need to come up with some better color variations. If Isuzu refines the interior a little, they could have an awesome Highlander and JGC fighter on their hands. But I think the Trooper is a very different vehicle from the Axiom.
  • cwmosercwmoser Member Posts: 227
I too looked at the Axiom which is a nice vehicle but my preference is the Trooper not so much about color of the interior but that the Trooper is bigger and has styling that I find as more pleasing than the Axiom - more pleasing than the Explorer, 4Runner, Grand Cherokee, and Durango for that matter.

No such thing, on any vehicle. Right now with the economy slowing down and the market saturated with new vehicles (just look around on your way to work) their is little demand for used vehicles. Plus how many times have we seen people (here) contemplating buying used or new recently, they wind up buying new because of the incentives/financing. 16K for a 99' LTD is roughly a 45%-50% hit in the first 2.5 years, then you trade it in on another vehicle that going to depreciate just as fast. With 20K in 2.5 years or so, your averaging 10K a year. You could, IMO drive that 99' for 20 years (you've got a real nice rig). After you pay it off, you'll start making up the loss the longer you keep it. 200K is not unrealistic for these trucks if you take care of them. You're losing way too much money to do a deal like that, JMO.

Sorry, but this sounds like an impulse buy. Take the money your willing to lose on the truck and take the wife to Hawaii, better return on investment...hehe!

Just went from Lost Angeles to Grand Canyon, 1,070 miles round trip. Three people & gear through the desert, 70-75 mph, cruise control, AC on. Got 17.98 mpg overall. Not bad, considering it's a 6,500 foot altitude gain from L.A. to GC.

Of course more mpg is always better, but I'm satisfied considering the comfort & roominess of the Troop.

BTW, gas is WAY cheaper in Arizona. The cheapest I found it was $1.199 (cash price in Kingman, AZ), compared to the cheapest in L.A. at about $1.599. Even the ripoff stations at the GC Rim in the Nat'l. Park were the same price as the cheapest L.A. prices.

I'm also glad the Troop runs great on the cheapest gas I can find, unlike some of the pricey "luxury" SUVs. No pinging or knocking, just great performance. What's up with that, anyway? Why do some "luxury" auto makers insist on making engines that require premium fuel? I don't get it. They don't make any more horsepower. The technology exists (at least in Japan) to make a high performance engine that runs on 87 Octane. You'd think the Germans would be smart enough to "borrow" this technology....

It keeps me from buying a MB E320, which I otherwise covet. Who wants to spend the extra money, forever, on premium fuel just to commute to work?

The blue book value is probably what they will sell it for, so the difference between what they offered you and the book value is the profit they hope to make when selling your trade-in. That is why selling it yourself can usually get a better price - you get the "profit", not the dealer.

On the other hand, the value of the trade-in is figured in before sales tax is calculated, which would save you over $1,000 in MN...

Well - the Trooper is in the shop having a few minor cosmetic blemishes taken care of - noticed during delivery. Will take a digital shot of the seats when I get it back. No mechanical problems observed with the vehicle so far. Trade in prices for everything is low right now do to incentives for new vehicles - lot of inventory out there and the new models are a month away. When I took delivery of the Trooper the salesman picked me up at home in a new Axiom. In my mind it is trying to fit into a market already saturated with semi SUV's. Nothing about it really stood out - nice ride - but so!!. Salesman mentioned that they had only sold two - a slow mover. Also contacted a firm who sells kits to provide DRL's to vehicles that do not have them. They requested a schematic to identify the right kit - now thats a tough one - maybe the service department will run me a copy out of one of their manuals. Also the rear cup holder in my Trooper is goofy - poor magnet attach mechanism to keep it closed - dealer informed me that he will have the service department install a new upgraded unit that takes care of this problem. Also I read where someone thought the oil in a new Trooper was a special blend - ain't so according to the service department - just plain old oil. Talk to you later.

Be wary of the paint shop. If they start spot painting with the sprayer it could end up worse. Others on this board have been through that I believe. If they just apply touchup or buff out a scratch that IMO is better. In terms of the fender trim, bumpers etc., spot painting is not good. One needs to repaint a whole section.

Thanks to all for responding to my post about my trade in value. By the way YES it was/is an impulse buy...there is nothing wrong with my Trooper and I love driving it (its always a fun vehicle to drive). I basically liked the Axiom because the seats were more comfortable and at highway speeds it handled a little better. Of course you give up lots of interior headroom, storage etc. Anyway, I'll prolly keep my Trooper for awhile now and go over to Paisans Trooper page to find out which shocks to order..thats really my only complaint on the Troop, factory shocks are too mushy...
  • 99trooper99trooper Member Posts: 87
oh yeah..anyone had this problem? When I unlock the truck from the keyfob, all the doors unlock, but once in awhile the rear door won't unlock even though all the rest have...just thought i'd see if anyone else has experienced this prob...

I don't condone street racing but...

Hey guys just a side note of cars that the Trooper LS in TOD mode beat tonight at red-light races, with 3 people in it (my fat butt being one of them, and I wasn't driving) They were off-the light sprints, barely to 65mph:

    V8 Cougar
    V8 Grand Cherokee
    240sx

    :)
  • boxtrooperboxtrooper Member Posts: 843
Did the other cars know you were racing them?
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
It was typical NYC warm summer night, radios a blaring, guinea Tee wearing, bass thumping night. You know at a light when someone revs their engine that it's not for fun, I mean we didn't blow em out of the water, but we were about 1/2-2 car lengths ahead of them when they backed off signalling the end of the sprint. :) My buddy and I felt like we were 17 and 18 again if only for 1/2hr :)

    -mike
  • gpm5gpm5 Member Posts: 785
The cougar I can understand depending on the year etc. Now that I think about it; what's in a 240sx?
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
240sx has a 165hp 2.4l I4 engine. Not really a fast car per say, but it's light (about 2000lbs lighter than the trooper)

    -mike
  • tntmythtntmyth Member Posts: 70
I would think that a V8 Grand Cherokee should be able to pull away from a Trooper fairly easily. And the V8 Cougar definitely shoul be able to win. My friend has a 2001 JGC Limited. It feels like it should out accelerate the Trooper. Trooper 0-60 times are 9.3 seconds I believe according to the reviews.

    REAR DOOR LOCK NOT WORKING
As a matter of fact, that happened the other day that the rear lock would not work. So I opened the door and re-locked and then unlocked the car again and it was worked again. So hopefully it was just a fluke. If it happens again a couple times, I'll take it in for service.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
I thought the JGC would too. I think because it was all pimped out with bigger rims we were able to keep with him. He was the hardest out of the 3. The cougar was only about 1/2 a car length behind the back of the trooper, and the 240sx was about 1-2 car lengths back.

The NYC streets in the area we were in weren't 100% smooth so the TOD I think helped big time to keep us from losing traction.

Well, we've past the hottest days here in Phoenix and suddenly the A/C is working much better! I forgot to mention an attempted ripoff from an independent shop here.

When I had the A/C checked they told me it was overcharged by 5 lbs and that having the proper pressure in the system would help it operate at peak efficiency cooling the air another 5 degrees or so. So I asked the service guy if they bled off the 5 lbs. He proceeds to tell me that bleeding off pressure is not the proper way to do it. They want to evacuate the entire system and refill it for $135. My first question is "why?" This bozo tells me you can't open the system without letting air in (?). Hmmm....it's a pressurized system but air gets in when you bleed off pressure? At this point I know it's time to leave. I don't argue, but just tell them to leave it alone and I'll be going.

I got a call from a customer service person last time I had work done there and when I said it was a little pricey then sent me a $25 gift certificate to a nice restaurant. Maybe after they hear this story they'll send me my own restaurant!

I need to buy some side bars for my 01 Trooper. My youngest kid, (16 months) fell trying to climb out. It reminded me of the Audi commercial with the lady in the heels. I want to go cheap. Some black nerf bars with rubber inserts would be fine. I want bolt on. No drilling for me.

    Thanks,

  • kobokokoboko Member Posts: 34
Manik and Westin both sell aftermarket side bars for the Trooper, and they bolt on directly without any drilling or tapping. I personally have Manik on my '01 Trooper, they run a little cheaper than Westin, around $240 for black compared to $270 for Westin. Check out http://www.manik.com/ or call customer service @ 1.800.457.7645 to find nearest distributor.

The whole Joe stole the website thing is pretty funny, but after looking through the various incentive options being offered, there is no real info like you used to get at isuzu.com (specs, colors, etc.). Maybe they are redoing the "real" website and this is just a filler for a short time.
Anyone know what they are up to?
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Yeah I think it's temporary. Probably for a week or 2. Anything can help their marketing, it doesn't get any worse than it's been. Heck some of the guys on IDS were thinking of having a grassroots Isuzu Convoy from NY->LA just as a publicity stunt to get attention for Isuzu. With Press releases in small towns all over the US.

I ordered the black Isuzu side bars a couple of months ago from St Charles Isuzu for $317.00. It took me 45 minutes to install them myself. No drilling and no lifting of Trooper involved.

This JERK in a white cargo van nailed my 2001 Trooper today with a door ding. Inconsiderate %@&#! Worst is that it is on the crease as the top of the door. So it looks worse than it is. It is actually very small but it caused a vertical crease a few inches long when you see it in the reflected light. I am considering having Dent Wizard take it out using their PDR (Paintless Dent Removal) technology since I'm not ready to live with a door ding with my Trooper only being 2 months old. I have heard that they can fix it to new condition. Supposedly, they use tools to massage the dent from inside the panel until it is removed. There was no factory paint taken off in the dent, but the white paint from the cargo van is scuffed on the dent. But Dent Wizard says that will buff out once the dent is removed. Also, they want $80 plus to do the job. Has anyone had any experience with Dent Wizard or similar outfits?
  • vivayovivayo Member Posts: 32
I haven't personally used them but a guy at work had both his 740il and his wife's A6 beat up pretty badly in a hailstorm - 20+ dings per vehicle. I don't know if the guy doing the work was a Dent Wizard franchisee, but the procedures were what you describe - massaged from inside the panels. When he finished, you can't see where any work was done nor where any damage was sustained. And he did it at the guy's house.

Well the new Isuzu site it something else! I don't think it is so temporary. I design websites and e-commerce sites so I can say that they put alot of work into that site, cheeesy as it might look. They will probably keep it for at least a while. I hope Joe Isuzu helps them sell cars. What I think Isuzu should empasize is their involvement in off-road racing rather than Joe Isuzu. People like a high tech image. Mazda and Nissan, even Hyundai have gone to a high tech image. And I think it works! Isuzu spends so much in offroad racing and obviously has alot of experience and successes in that area. They should use that to their advantage to sell their SUVs.....Hope you are reading this all you Isuzu executives!
  • arktrooper1arktrooper1 Member Posts: 101
tntmyth - i used "dent doctor" to get two small dings out of my '00 trooper when it was relatively new - they charged me $85 for both but they did not have to buff and the dings were in the lower part of the door so it was easier to fix - it worked great and im a big fan of paintless dent removal now!

"the pledge" - i thought it was a good (how could it not be with "jack" in it?!) but depressing movie (what an ending!) made better by nicholson's "co-star", the trooper! - how about that scene near the end where he goes off road, knocking over fences to get to that church! - definately the vehicle i'd want to be in while pursuing an alleged homicidal maniac...LOL - i'll have to say that it would take an emergency of that magnitude to make me do that to my trooper though - but, hey, his was paid for!

First I want to thank You for responds to my message (test drove 2001 S with some high speed issues).I found 1998 LS -leather,sunroof,6disc changer, multi meter,42k,light green, minor wear & tear. Last weekend the truck was in the paper for $14.5,yesterday was $12.5.Went to see it -new Dunlop tires, runs ok ,but there was loud clunk, almost grind from R to D and vice verca.Guy said that it was like that since day one(he is the original owner). He said even if it is a problem the truck is still under factory warr. till oct.It seems like a good deal,I would even put up with the weird green ;) but I don't want to find out that for some reason Isuzu will not warranty it.Other than that ran fine, felt much better at highway speeds than the brand new one I drove week ago-no pulling no shimmey-better tires?Anyways, getting the "Trooper fever" more & more every day!More I look @ them more I like them! Thanks for any responds!Happy Trooping! (for now my wife's CRVing :)).
