I am interested in the advantage of using the brake ABS system for diverting traction to the other wheels in the 4WD system as opposed to the torque on demand system that senses wheel slippage as used in my '99 trooper. Do the brakes wear well? I see that open diffs are an advantage in terms of durability and that it does give the 4WD system onroad capabability. It seems to work very well. I got 17.6 mpg with it on in rain much of a trip. I just hope that in snow that one doesn't get the constant thumping of the brakes (as in the traction control system that was on our windstar--now traded for the sequoia) since this is annoying and something one would like to avoid in a 4WD system. Any thoughts or comments in regard to snow driving.
In posts 2686 & 2688 gpm5 asked if anyone had used the locked center differential capability off-road. I did that back in March, and found my old post detailing my experience. It is post #1760 (dated 03/29/01). You can get to it using the Msg# GoTo capability above, but not with #1760. Search uses a different numbering system (maybe deleted posts are counted), so you need to put Msg #1864 to GoTo the real Msg #1760 (or at least get close to it).
I also have an occasional dashboard sound -- it is a body flex induced click that turns into a full squeek now and then, and only happens when the temp. is below 60 (colder is worse). It appears to come from where the dash joins the window, but more likely originates on the underside of the dash (maybe the defroster/dash interface). It seems to happen in two places -- behind the instrument cluster, and in the corner on the passenger side.
Some Tundras seem to have a similar problem (see TundraSolutions.com "dash click" or "dash tick"), but they haven't solved it (for sure) yet.
It's probably won't be back until fall, and it is certainly not enough to give up the truck. But it does keep it from being nearly perfect.
"..found my old post ...It is post #1760... but not with #1760... Search uses a different numbering system....so you need to put Msg #1864 to GoTo the real Msg #1760"
Oh didn't you just love trying to find your post amongst 2000+ posts yet alone trying to find someone elses post that you're very vague about date?
When oh when are we going to get a REAL search engine for this TF?? When I asked this question a couple/few months ago I think we were told it was a month away. And of course I can't find that post to check anyway.
Looks like you live in Toyota's Gulf States region. Try going to Google.com and type in "choose your car model" and select the first option that comes up, then select the Toyota Sequoia, that brings you to another page where you select the SR5 2WD (GS). The options should be there. You don't have to give any personal information, just use it to get the pricing.
thanks for posting how to find your old post. That was very informative. There is a bumper bar that fits the 2" receiver hitch that I use on my trooper. It is about level with the bottom of the bumper and does well offroad in terms of preventing brush damage when backing up. I have not checked out yet whether it would block the bumper from getting hit on a steep inclination but I think that it would.
Well, today CONCORD TOYOTA, (who you should never, ever deal with) called a meeting with my husband and I, themselves and the bodyshop that did the repairs on our car. We were to look over the car (perfect, in their opinion) and accept their offer of a refund of the value of the "detail" jobs which they still owe us which we informed them that we will NEVER, EVER allow them to perform.
The moulding on the passenger side door was still not properly attached and appeared to be peeling back in some areas as well as having little spaces between it and the car in other areas. Under the SR5 emblem there was "dimpling" in the paint (for lack of a better term) there was still some overspray on the rear window and an area of overspray on the front passengerside door which wasn't supposed to be painted at all. The moulding around the rear wheel well had obviously been removed and replaced and just didn't look right anymore either.
Toyota was horrible, and placed all of the blame for problems on that of the body shop. (Remember, of course that the car should never have been at the body shop in the first place had Toyota not made the original scratches) The body shop guy was so sincere in his efforts to fix anything we wanted fixed but no matter how you slice it, unfortunately once a car has been disassembled, painted and reassembled, it will never be quite the same. It takes a critical eye to see the differences I point out, but they ARE there and through no fault of my own. So I told them I'm not taking the car at this point and I'll contact my attorney. (Which of course, will cost me as well!) The only compensation they have offered is a $330 refund of the cost of the detail jobs. Nothing for the non-original state of the car, inconvenience, depreciation etc.
I am disgusted. Please, please remember.....
NEVER USE CONCORD TOYOTA IN CONCORD, CA!!!!
I think I'm going to print out some signs for my car windows that say "Ask me about the service at Concord Toyota" Or "Don't use Concord Toyota if you know what's good for you" Maybe that will get some reaction from them.
Last night after I read rab4fdl's story about her Sequoia's abomination I woke up from a bad dream in a cold sweat. I dreamt(?) I was in an accident in my Sequoia, and when I got it back from the body shop it was an MDX. ARGHHH
I too had a high pitched squeak. It was the only sound in an otherwise quiet SR5. I traced this annoyance to the panel just to the left of the parking brake. Turns out if you pressed on it, the squeak stopped. I tried to tighten the screw, but the plastic screw stripped out. Brought to dealer who fixed it. Seems like a bad fitting piece, as it doesn't sit flush with the other trim pieces.
Probably not the same issue as others, but now the truck is again silent.
does anyone have any info regarding changes and timeframe availability for the my2002 sequoia? are there any significant changes? when will it become available? i'm interested in the truck, but i am not in a hurry.
Recently I was caught in a heavy rain at night and had an extremely tough time being able to see the road. This was on an interstate (I-77), white lines were well marked but it was all I could do to see the road. I slowed down to about 25 mph (I know that's crazy on an interstate), and could see a little better. Due to the danger of driving so slow I finally pulled off the highway. Sitting still, there was no problem in visibility. I thought the rain had nearly stopped so I pulled back onto the highway and immediately had difficulty seeing through the windshield again. It appeared that moving through the rain was the difficulty. I have a 93 4-Runner, a 96 Camry and a 90 Celica in addition to this Sequoia SR-5 and have not experienced this kind of difficulty before and I have driven in lots of rain before. Has anyone else had this difficulty? Would the bug shield deflector, or whatever it's called, help in this case. all information appreciated.
I have heard the squeak on my Seq. twice. It appeared to come from the area where the front windshield meets the dash. My former Volvo 850 had would make that noise when the temperature inside the car is hot.
I have no problem seeing through my windshield in heavy rain. I'd recommend using Rain-X to improve visibility in the rain. I'm not using rain-X now but I should do so for the rear window. The wiper in the rear makes lots of rumbling rubbing noises when its wiping. I'd also recommend getting your eyesight checked. This is not a smart-aleck comment.
Thanks lcd1 for your response. I will definately try the Rain-X. Speaking of having eyes checked, I did that about 2 months ago and had no problems. That was a good suggestion though. I guess the question I have now is for anyone who has had the bug deflector installed. Can you tell if it helps deflect the bugs AND also help deflect the rain over the windshield.
I am happy to let you know the Search function is almost complete...at this time you should be able to search under someone's username and see where they have posted, and you should be able to see most items in the Search Box...for example if you type in "Leasing" then it should return most if not all discussions with Leasing in the title. You can imagine what an huge task this has been, trying to incorporate all of words in discussion titles into the search engine. Again, it's not completely complete...but ALMOST!!
The chestnut color is deleted for the SR5's. The fog lamps are going to be an option (LF code) built into the SR5 models at the factory (not as a PPO). The keyless remote entry is broken apart from the "CQ" package. Meaning, those who favor the keyless entry but prefer no overhead console or the little extras that come with the "Convenience package" will be able to have the keyless entry separately.
Orders for the 2002 are being started in process right now. They are "taken" officially in July for August production, and the cars will be delivered to port facilities in September. released sometime in late September. I believe pricing will remain very close to the same.
"You can imagine what an huge task this has been, trying to incorporate all of words in discussion titles into the search engine."
Hmmmmmm. I would think that there would be about 100 off-the-shelf commercial apps and a few dozen free apps that would do this especially since most free BBS's provide it.

Something tells me I better write this post number down so I can find it in a few months. I hope to be proven wrong.
You can always "mark" the message by clicking on the mark button next to the message that you want to retain. A link to that message will then be place in your message centre where you can refer to it in the future. Hope this helps!

Need a little assistance here, please. With prices coming down ($41500 for a loaded limited) I am debating whether to take the plunge on a new Sequoia now, or wait for the 2002 to come out. I am not in any real hurry, but would like to try and get one by at least October. With some of the previous placed posts, some mention has been made of the disadvantages with a first year model & resale value. I am also a little concerned at the seemingly unresolved "clicking". I realize that waiting a couple of months and then buying a 2001 will probably allow me at least a few thousand off what I'll pay for a 2002 model, however any opinions on whether this will be worth it seeing as we are now so close to the 2002 model introduction?
im not sure where you think you are going to get a loaded limited for $41500 (approx $4,000 of MSRP??)- maybe in fantasy land? let me know what dealers there are there so I can go visit them when im on a vacation from reality. there won't be any disadvantages to owning a 2001 Toyota Seq. this isnt a new car company - toyota has been around for some time last i checked. the changes for 2002 are so minor its not even worth discussing. lets discuss changes when Toyota decides to put a real stereo in the vehicle with steering wheel audio controls, adds wood trim option, a bigger engine option, backup sensors, and moderatley comfortable arm rests. its quite amusing reading about all these trivial changes "the 2002 will have a fog light option with abc package, but no engine comes with the xyz package" "the def package will have green hammertone trim to further look ridiculous next to the oak interior, and the wxy package will have a keyless lock system that prevents owners from getting in to the vehicle all together"
I recently saw some information on soon to be released items for the Sony PS 2. Sony will be selling a detached LCD screen (~$150 I believe). So for $399 plus a screen you can have video(DVD), cd or game playing. Sounds like an intersting option once we can actually see what the screen will loook like.
If you can find a bug deflector that works well with bugs and does not detract from the aesthetic look of the Seq, please let me know. With respect to a deflector that deflects rain, that's a new invention to me. I'm curious to see it.
Checked out the Jim Barkley Toyota web site. Fully loaded black, white, and silver sky 2001 Sequoias can be had for $41,500 - $42,000. I think I would go for the 2001s for that price. There will be no advantage to owning a 2002 over a 2001 especially for Limited owners.
Thanks for the link to the hitch-mounted bumper guard.
That might work, maybe with tie-ins to the frame on each end, since it could have to support the weight of the vehicle's back end sliding down a rock ledge.
I'm not adverse to a little cutting and welding, as long as it's not on the Sequoia itself.
And yes, it was a pain to locate that old post. Fortunately I remembered roughly when I posted it, and that narrowed the search.
We have about 4K on our 4WD/Limited and over all we are satisfied! In discussion with my wife today she indicated that periodically when she is stopped at a light the vehicle lunges slightly forward and she gets a sensation that she has been hit lightly from behind. Although, she (both the vehicle and my wife) has some slight faults I have also felt the same sensation but never said anything because I thought I was imagining things- Any similar experiences, causes .....
Thanks for the info on the bike racks-we went with the yakima Terrafirma, easy to use.... only problem is that the cradles are a little too big for our kids bikes.
Also for those of you that have lost part of your roof rack, we lost the rear cover piece also-replaced under warranty in two days.
There are indeed dealers who will move this much on the Sequoia. I've seen it in both Washington State and Southern California. The Washington deal was months ago, in SoCal it was quite recent.
The 2001 LC "boomy bass" problem can be fixed. (Can read post #823)... You can have the dealer order part # 86280-0W060-C from JBL. Took us less than 10 days to order and have fixed. Sounds great!
This may be old news, but anyone know if this is the same problem as reported in the Seq?
And - as far as fantasyland goes, God Bless Austin, TX. I have the sales rep calling me daily to sell me a 4WD Loaded Seq for 41.5K. (In my choice of colour, too!). Itchy pocket is going to make me buy.....
Matt at Independent 4x will weld up a system to order, but I guess the question is would one want it permanently bolted? to the frame. Depending, I think the bar could hold quite a bit of weight if its between let's say the center post and the edge. Also, the bar would work with the suspension to lift the back of the vehicle up on the one side. I have not used it in this way in an offroad situation. It is quite solid to stand-on, on the far sides but does have a little wobble that can be gotten rid of with a small device that holds it tight in the receiver.
Our Sequoia does the "lunging thing" too. Primarily the wife's car but she has commented on this and I have noticed it too. One thought that we had is that maybe it is coinciding with the AC compressor cycling on and the corresponding increase in RPM to compensate. Our neighbors have a Sequoia too and they are VERY concerned about this peculiarity.
Regarding the booming bass in the TLC, I have the dubious distinction of having started that thread after a close friend bought one of the first 2001's. While the stereo options may not be optimal in the Seq, it most definitely does not have the same problem as the TLC.
I will post some of my experiences in replacing the Sequoia stereo and some but not all of the components - as I am just finishing up this effort in my Seq (finally!).
Just last Friday I purchased my Sequoia from Debra McNulty at MacMinnville Toyota in MacMinnville, Oregon. I solicited online quotes from every dealer in the Portland metro area that allowed me to do so from their website, and Deb not only quoted me the lowest price at $1,000 over invoice, but did it with as little hassle as possible. No hoops to jump through, no requests to call back for a price quote, just a list of all the options and her price. She was also the only one to give me both the MSRP and the invoice price, and based the offer off the invoice (after she completed the dealer trade, she even faxed me the actual invoice for my approval!).
But it gets even better. When I finally got back to her the next day to move forward with the purchase, the truck she quoted me had been sold the night before by the dealer she was going to do the trade with. She continued doing locate searches at all the dealers in the area, and I had broken down my option selection into "must-have's" and "not-as-big-of-a-deal either way". We made an agreement (over email) that whatever truck she found that met my must-have criteria I could purchase at $1,000 over whatever the invoice was. Within 12 hours, she had found one that had just come in at Olympia, Washington. She arranged the dealer trade Wednesday afternoon, sent a driver to pick it up Thursday, and I drove it home Friday just in time for the long weekend, as happy as can be. A fully loaded 4x4 SR5 (basically everything but the premium audio and leather) for $36,667. Keep in mind if you're looking for a 2wd or a Limited, or by the mere fact that it's one week later, your price may vary. Things should go smoother if you just email and ask for a price quote on what you want, instead of demanding the price I got...don't worry, she'll give you her best offer.
In short, it was the absolute best car-buying experience I've ever had. Email Deb at dmcnulty@mactoyotavw.com and she'll find you the truck you want at her best price. She said she's been selling cars this way for 8 years, and it shows. I talked to her maybe twice on the phone, everything else was through email (very prompt responses!). I swear I will never deal with floor salespeople again, from now on it's fleet managers only, LOL!
yep - mine lunges sometimes too. Maybe lunge is too strong a word. It does feel like someone just bumped the truck from behind. I have only noticed it a few times. Anyone know what this is?
Actually, I noticed it today as well. It is definitely the AC compressor cycling on/off and this increases RPM as noted in recent post. It is a peculiar feeling. I have noticed a form of this on other vehicles as well.
I am just a Sequoia lurker, hope it will be my next vehicle sometime. I do have a Tundra though and have felt the same "tapped from behind" feeling (oh what a feeling). I never associated it with the A/C though, b/c I believe it has happened during the Winter months also. I thought it was a transmission quirk, this is the first automatic I have owned.
If you use your front defroster in the winter, your AC compressor will be cycling on/off to help your windshield de-fog faster. Might explain that "hit from behind feeling" in the winter.
Fantasy or not... but I got my Red Pearl Sequoia SR5 loaded (with the exception of PM package) for $35,500. It's a demo one with a couple thousands of miles on it. *shrug* No big deal to me. And it's just about the only Red Pearl that I can find in surrouding Philly-NJ-NY area (and I wouldn't settle for silver).
Since the sequoia is so wide, can I fold the mirrors (bring them towards my driver and passenger side windows is what I mean) if my garage is small to accomodate two wide cars (other one is a avalon). I see on the avalon its fixed and cannot be folded. Any thoughts
I think the SR5's mirrors are manually retractable. We have the limited, so they are electric. We fold the mirrors in when we pull into the garage in order to make it fit. It works well for us.
