I had my 15,000 mile work done on my Sequoia last week and when I went over a bump heard a noise like going over a metal grate. When I checked, the undercover plate was hanging down. Took it back and was told that the metal clips that hold the back two corners are made of very inferior soft metal and this has been a problem for Sequoia owners. Just a heads up to be on the lookout.

I am in the market for a bug deflector / hood guard for my Sequoia. Any recommendations from those who have installed one? I know Toyota makes one but believe it requires drilling which is not something I really want to do. Anyone with a Lund or EGR? Which model? How do you like them?

I had one on my old Ford Expedition and liked it much. It was contoured and curved to the shape of the hood and sat up high so you could easily clean underneath it with a towel. I couldn't locate the manufacturer's name on the bug deflector. This is what I am looking for on my Sequoia. Any recommendations?

Toyota hood deflector is great. Installs with no drilling in less than 10 minutes and is very contoured to the vehicle. looks great and is very reasonably priced ($90 canadian)

I was just at the Toyota parts department and they had an OEM Toyota hood deflector in stock for the Sequoia. We took it out and it did require some drilling underneath the hood on the outside edges. It came in a Toyota Box and said Toyota on the side of the deflector. It had brackets that wedged in between the front grill and screwed into a back plate provided with the kit. Is this the same one you have?

Well, I would love to take the 3rd seats out. However, my wife demands I leave it in there becuase the dog likes to stay there. (the 2nd seats are folded up).

So, I have admitted defeat, and am now looking for seat covers for the 3rd seat.

Thanks to norwesterner, 714cut, and petro33 for your advice re towing. I'm off to my Sequoia dealer today!

How are ya. Have you done the Z-1 Zaino prep before using the Z-2 yet ? Would you know if you can use their products in the sun ? Thanks.
  • wavebreaker1wavebreaker1 Member Posts: 5
Toyota hood deflector I purchased did not require driling. There are two clips, two silicone pads which are self stick and place at the outer edge (underside) plus the deflector is predrilled to match up with trim bolts on the underside of the hood
  • gregfockergregfocker Member Posts: 39
Do your two inside clips wedge inside the top gap in the grill area from the outside? The one I saw did this but the bottom portion of the clips were very visible when looking at the Sequoia from the front. One Toyota parts department near me also sells an aftermarket one. I have not seen this yet but doubt it is the same as yours since he mentioned it also requires drilling.

Did you buy your hood deflector from your local Toyota dealer or an after market shop? The quote I got was $175 (US) from my dealer - which seems too high as a Highlander HD is $70.If you bought from an after market could you give me the details? Thanks
  • trdsctwotrdsctwo Member Posts: 67
Bought my hood deflector from Dealership for $118.80 CDN ($77.25 US). He installed it for
for no extra charge and it looks and works great. Noticed a small rock chip in it that would
have ended up on my hood or windshield so it's probably paid for itself already.

    Hi all,

Within about a week my tailgate lifts stopped holding up the Tail Gate. I am taking it in tomorrow to have it looked at. Should I expect this to be replaced and covered under Warranty ?

    Thanks,

    Dan
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
As long as you are within the 3 years or 36,000 miles, that part will be covered, unless it can be shown that you somehow broke it. If it just stopped working, it will be covered without question.
  • dansonnemanndansonnemann Member Posts: 6
Thanks, I think I am within the 36,000 mile mark, but just barely. :) I think we got an extended warranty on it to 60K. I will also ask about the AC thing tomorrow when I go in.
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
If you have the extended warranty, it will be covered under that as well. I am a bit curious though about the fact that you *think* you have the extended warranty. That normally stands out in a person's memory because it costs between $1300 and $1600 on a Sequoia. Is it possible you are thinking about the 5 year/60K powertrain warranty? That is the standard warranty for Toyota, but does not cover anything beyond the engine and transmission and some of the 4WD parts.
  • dansonnemanndansonnemann Member Posts: 6
I got the truck on a lease for 5 years. It was over a year a go. I just pay what they tell me to, and sign where they tell me to. :D
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
How come I can't find more customers like you? Seriously, my job is in the finance office and I sell the warranties so I am acutely aware that most customer read every stinkin' line on the contract. It is pretty easy to find out what you have. There will be a separate charge on the lower left column of your lease contract and if it is a TFS lease, you had to initial for the charge on an extended warranty.
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
Whoa, I just realized something... you are about out of the 36K portion of your warranty and you're only one year into a 5 year lease? May I suggest buying a "hooptie" to stack some mile on?
  • nvcnvc Member Posts: 21
So how much did people pay for a Toyota ext warranty that give you a total of 100K mi, 7 or 8 years?

Do you have to buy this at time of purchase/delivery?
  • dansonnemanndansonnemann Member Posts: 6
Even with all of the "unexpected" miles that I've had to put on it, the Truck has been a dream. I love the truck and hope to buy it when the lease is up. I guess I WILL have to buy it. ;) Thanks for your help.

Oh, and a "hooptie" is not as fun to drive. :)

I'll answer your question from the perspective of a guy that sells them. Keep in mind that I only sell the Toyota Platinum warranty and I'm fairly happy about that. I've seen coverage sheets on "aftermarket" warranties and I have yet to see one that covers as much equipment as the Toyota one does.

The MSRP on the 7/100K is $1650 as per Toyota's web site. Most dealers will offer some form of discount at the time of purchase. They do this because they know this is the most likely time for you to actually buy it. You can always purchase the warranty a month before your 3/36K expires, but at that point, the dealer knows you have little choice.

A good price at time of delivery would be between $1300 and $1400. If your dealer will not offer something like that, shop at other dealers. You don't have to buy the warranty at the dealership that sells you the car.

Edmunds is currently into the 2nd month of a Long-Term Review on a Sequoia. It's an SR5, without Toyota leather. They went to an aftermarket shop and bought a leather package (around $1300-1500?), which they seem to be quite pleased with.

I was under the impression that adding aftermarket leather somehow interferes with the supplemental side airbags. If that is not the case, does anyone have any info on adding leather? I'd love to know where Edmunds got theirs from.
  • wavebreaker1wavebreaker1 Member Posts: 5
The two clips slide on to the hood about 12 inches from either side. They are not very visible since they are almost the same colout as the deflector. I ppurchased the deflector from my Toyota dealer and they also installed it for free (took ess than 10 minutes). It is a Toyota part and as hood deflectors go, very nicely done. I will post a picture if I can find my digital camera.
  • gregfockergregfocker Member Posts: 39
That would be great if you could post the a picture. Thanks for all of your help!

The "At a Glance" sidebar in the Long Term report says the Edmunds add-on is Classic Soft Trim Leather. Classic Soft Trim is a franchise outfit, so if you go to their website (www.classicsofttrim.com), you can find out if they have any locations near you.

Sometimes if you call a dealer or two, they'll tell you who they use locally for aftermarket leather - usually this stuff is farmed out to local upholstery shops. Katzkin is another franchise outfit.

Side air bags is an issue, and it doesn't say how the test vehicle avoided the issue - good installer, or just leather in the seat and not on the sides?

I've kept up w/ this board for about 1 1/2 years now and don't recall seeing any posts on the parking brakes not 'holding' good enough. By this, I mean, when I'm on a slight incline, I can press my parking brake in all the way down (while in neutral) and let off the brake pedal and the parking brake will not hold (stop) the vehicle from rolling. I always want the parking brake to 'hold' the vehicle on any incline instead of the transmission doing it by placing it in park. My vehicle (01 SR5) has done this since purchasing it a little over a year ago. I know it's probably a minor adjustment to tighten it up, but has anyone else had to get this done?

Also, on the AC compressor/tube problem...can the 2 owners who have had the problems tell the rest of us your typical use of your AC before you had the problems? i.e. does the rear AC get used/adjusted much different than the front? I have 2 small kids, so the rear controls never really get adjusted, but I'm sure other users may have rear passengers adjusting the controls much more often. I'd just like to know if there are certain ways to induce a failure, or place too much load on the refrigerant suction tube. Seems like this is only a problem w/ rear AC, so maybe if the rear AC was used much more on the 2 that have actually failed, this may tell us something???

ibmindless: you are right, added after market leather on the door panels will interfere with the supplemental side air bags, so you may have to leave it as cloth. the after market leather company edmunds went to have their done is called classic soft trim (or classic leather) i know they have one in hayward (in bay area) they did a wonderful job, go for dark gray, it matchs the interior perfectly, like the color for the GX's. they won't direct deal with you, you need to go through dealer. the price you wrote is probably right (around $1300 -1500)

    good luck!

i purchased my '01 SR5 in Dec 2000, and had the leather seat and trim done by Classic Soft Trim, for a fee of $1350. This included all three seatings and all door panels (trim). We chose Platinum color which matched our Silver exterior color. It is very nice indeed. A little hard, but has held up pretty good with the level of abuse my two brats - 8 and 9-yr olds put the seats to.

According to Toyota, you cannot add AM leather if you have side airbags. If edmund's was able to do this, I will be very much surprised.
  • ibmindlessibmindless Member Posts: 62
Excellent info on the leather - THANKS Steve and everyone! I found a Classic Soft Trim nearby and spoke to the manager. They normally do wholesale work for the dealers. They make their own leather and distribute it to their franchises in kit form. For the Sequoia, they cover all 3 rows of seats, headrests, and side panels. They claim they have done testing on the side panels and find it does not interfere with the side air bags. However, they also have a $25M insurance policy to cover any problems. The insurance is to cover the car dealers.

Regardless, they can do mine for $1499.

    Parking Brake
Since new, my parking brake would hold on a slight incline, but the pedal would travel very easily and I had to push it all the way to the floor. I figured it needed adjustment, so eventually I took it in. About 100 miles after the adjustment, I noticed that it seemed as if the brakes were dragging. I felt the wheels, and sure enough - the left rear was HOT.

When I took it back in, they said the rear discs were fried. They had over-adjusted them. Now a few thousand miles later, all is OK. The parking brake holds and feels firmer, and it doesn't have to hit the floor.

Just bought a limited 4wd and was wondering if the original oil has to be changed after 1000mi, break-in period or should I wait for the first scheduled maintenance at 5,000 mi.

Thanks for the info in advance.

I have an '02 Sequoia and just had Classic Soft Trim install leather on my seats. It looks every bit as good if not better than the factory leather. I highly recommend them!

BTW - I had all three rows installed for only $1,299!
  • lutz572lutz572 Member Posts: 12
My 2001 Sequoia failed the inspection due to the parking brake not holding at 1500 rpms. When I took it back to the dealer, they adjusted it and it still failed the inspection. It eventually passed, but barely would hold at 14-1500 rpms. The brake doesn't seem to stop the vehicle from rolling, especially on an incline. I am just living with it.

gregfocker I don't suppose the $1299 deal was anywhere near San Diego, was it? Was that through the dealer, or direct with Soft Trim?

A/C Dies Yup, the darned thing bit the dust. It's an '02, bought in Oct. 01. Left work, drove 3 miles, turned on A/C, fan blew warmish air, then I noticed A/C light flashing on & off.

Outside temp was around 74F, but car was warm from sitting in lot all day. A/C was not under stress, and it had barely run for 30 seconds when I noticed it was acting up. I tried it 2 more times after waiting about 5 minutes between tries, and the results were the same.

Anyone knowledgeable with CA lemon laws? This makes at least the 5th visit to the dealer since Oct. for various & sundry defects. Around 8.5K miles so far. I think the root issue is that the vehicle was not built in Japan.
  • gregfockergregfocker Member Posts: 39
Actually it was at Classic Soft Trim on Miramar Road in San Diego. It wasn't through the dealer (dealer wanted $1,800) but I had the Toyota sales guy contact them directly and tell them to give me their price as part of the deal on the Sequoia. I would recommend going their and talking to them to see what they can do. Fact is they want your business and if you can only make it happen for $1,299 they should accept it. Good luck!

BTW - The leather is awesome! I had to go to my local Toyota dealership to pick up some stuff and saw a limited with the factory leather. I sat in it and then sat in mine. You can't tell a difference. I wouldn't be surprised if Classic supplied the leather to Toyota directly for factory installs.

What is the going price over invoice?
  • gregfockergregfocker Member Posts: 39
The deals vary on what region you are in. I got my fully loaded SR5 a few weeks ago for $194 over invoice in Southern California. I did the old email every dealer within 150 miles trick to see what comes back. It worked great for me.

I think the norm is between $500-$1,000 over invoice if you do some shopping around. I know $700-$800 over invoice is relatively easy in Los Angeles & Orange County. Good luck!

BTW - You can shop for extended warranties the same way (via email blast). I did this and got a quote for the Toyota 7 year/100,000 miles Platinum Protection Plan with $0 deductible for only $900! The MSRP on this plan in my area is $1,425. Some dealers try charging more than the MSRP but don't be fooled. It doesn't take much effort to find a great deal...

I am looking to buy a sequoia but we don't want to spend an arm and a leg. we are willing to look any were in the United States for a new one(2002)but I am interested in finding out what the invoice amount is on this vehicle. And what the average consumer is paying for the SUV and what types of deals people are getting on them. I am in the market to buy asap and would love any helpful tips on buying/invoice amount/ or locations to seek on finding "the right price"
    thanks

That's what Edmunds is all about. Have you checked the invoice and TMV that Edmunds gives. You can get it by each option you want on the vehicle and with each trim. The TMV is sort of what the average person actually pays although I found it to be just a touch on the high side but close.

Is a navigation system option for the Sequoia or I have to it OEM?

If for pure city/freeway driving, is there any advantage to 4wd? Rain handling? minimal tire slip because of weight of seq? just better overall handling?

For the 4wd owners out there, how often do you use 4wd when in city/freeway? Have you found a need to do so in said conditions?

I am trying to decide 4wd vs 2wd (but not from a market resale perspective). I do not off road, and live in SoCal.

    Thanks for the insights.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Is better in wet, dry and snowy conditions, especially on such a large vehicle. Once you drive a vehicle with AWD you never go back to FWD or RWD.

But can you keep the Toyota Seq 4wd in this moide under normal (dry pavement) conditions? I remember reading something that you cannot.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
I believe it has a mode where you can leave it engaged 24x7. I'm sure Cliffy or one of the other Yoda Gurus will step in on when and when it can't be engaged. I know on the TLC it is always engaged, and the 4-runner even has a mode that is usable on dry-pavement. The only time I run my Trooper in 2wd mode is when I'm on a long dry highway trip. If there is traffic where I might need to make quick turns or in city traffic where you constantly are turning in/around potholes and what not, the AWD stays engaged.

Trust me, you can run in 4WD 24-7. I do it all the time, unless I'm on a long highway run on a nice day.
