The dealer wants $51 for a round piece of plastic with six holes in it. They also want me to pay for it before they order it. I was hoping to do better online. I will probably also buy an all-weather mat for the cargo area. The local dealer also has dogs so, even if one were so inclined, the midnight expedition is out.

Try www.toyotaparts4u.com and do a parts inquiry if they are not listed.

I have 37000 miles on my 01 Seq but I am curious what the date of the TSB is. I can very easily prove my mileage at any time because I log the mileage on a daily basis. If I had less than 36K at the time the TSB came out, would I be entitled to a free replacement also? If this is indeed a manufacturer's defect or design flaw that Toyota had admitted, then they should inform us on time that there is such a TSB. Or, is this only true to recalls?

If I had less than 36K before the date of the TSB and Toyota will not honor the warranty, you can bet that my next vehicle would not be a Toyota. I had 8 Toyotas and one Lexus in a row. I have helped friends buy aT LEAST 20 Toyotas also. Go figure..

I think you may be out of luck since your truck is out of the 3/36 bumper-to-bumper warranty. You may want to ask your *friendly* Toyota Service dept if they'll help you out, but don't expect too much help. There has been plenty of info on this forum on the TSB. Take it in and see what they tell you. You may also want to contact Toyota Corp. to see what they can do to help you. Do you have the *shake* of the wheels ? Have you replaced your OE brakes yet ? If you have, then you should have a genuine case to have this replaced for you. Let us know how you make out.
  • toyotatoystoyotatoys Member Posts: 118
Raddboy, what is the date of the TSB? I could not get my e-mail sent directly to you.
    Thanks.

I went to the dealer at 36900 and complained about the brakes and mentioned the TSB. There was no hesitation, the performed the front end work with no questions.
  • low_ball_88low_ball_88 Member Posts: 171
I went to my local dealer to complain about the brakes shifting when releasing the break pedal after making a complete stop. So they had the technician go for a test drive with me and the tech said everything is fine. I mentioned to the service advisor about the TSB and he said it only applies when the breaks causes a vibration. In my case, this did not apply.

I would still like to have the TSB done regardless if the problem ever appears from now to the end of the 3yr./36,000 mi warranty. I currently have about 6500 miles on my 02 SEQ LTD.

It appears to me those on this message board are getting the TSB work done with no resistence from the dealer. Please let me know if anyone of you had work done at a Toyota dealer in the Sacramento, CA area.

Any additional advise would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

Does anyone know for sure if the 2004 Sequoia will have NAV. Also, when will it be available? Thanks.
  • petro33petro33 Member Posts: 192
I had mine done at Folsom Lake Toyota. I mentioned the vibrating brakes and they mentioned the TSB and fixed it. There was only the slightest vibration but they did not seem to care. Good Luck

Does anyone with a Sequoia have, what I would describe as, "excessive" sulfer smell from the catalytic converter? I have never had a new car that continually has this smell. Any suggestions?

Did anyone in this board order a seq from the factory with selected options of your choice? If so, how long did it take? I don't want to have moon roof, but the dealer said most of all seq come with roof whether it is sr5 or limited. I want just a basic sr5 with conv. package and alloy wheel package.

Does anyone have experience of towing a travel trailor with this car? Should I really have to watch out for the weight of the trailor and stay within the limit?

What was the best price you could get it for? $800 over invoice? $1000 or more?

    Any advice would help. Thanks.
  • slackersslackers Member Posts: 77
I didn't order from factory, but was advised, and I think properly so, that as most people want those moon roofs, not having it would impact resale. As I traded up from an '01 to an '03, I was sure glad I had that option, though I never used it. Ordered it on my '03 as well. I paid $1500 over invoice, which is probably a fair deal. Good luck. The Sequoia is a great vehicle.
  • slackersslackers Member Posts: 77
Has anyone seen one installed, or installed this new option ? It is pictured in the Toyota options brochure for the Sequoia at their dealerships.
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
Prices vary by region. Right now, the Limited is almost impossible to get in the Central Atlantic region so expect to pay more right now. The SR5 is around and prices reflect that.

If the bumpers you are talking is the one I saw for an MSRP of $595 or something like that, don't get it. It is nothing more than a cheap plastic fake grill guard. It is really cheesy.
  • slackersslackers Member Posts: 77
Once again Cliffy, you are a gem. Thanks.
  • chadrappchadrapp Member Posts: 35
I've had my 03 since October. 5000 miles and experience sulfur smell also. What to do?
  • slackersslackers Member Posts: 77
Cliffy (or anyone else in the know): What do you think about the TRD Cat-Back Exhaust system (besides it being expensive). Is is worth it without any other engine enhancements ? About how much should you expect to pay for installation and should it be installed at a Toyota dealer (any warranty implications ?) Thanks.
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
The only part of that post I can really answer is the warranty one. It will not affect your warranty at all. In fact, if you have the Toyota extended warranty, it would be covered along with everything else.

As to value... judgment call. I'm not sure on the price but I seem to remember something in the neighborhood of $700 to $800 installed. I could be wrong.

We've got a 2003 Sequoia 4X4, and recently tried to engage the 4WD. It takes almost 1 mile of forward travel for the flashing light to go out, if it does. About 1/3 of the time, it does not stop flashing. If you stop the vehicle, back up a few feet, then move forward again, the light stops flashing and everyting is OK. Is this standard ops for this system or is there a problem?? Say what you will about Chevy/GM/Ford products, but the 2500HD/Tahoe/Expeditons that we have owned have engaged 4WD almost instantly.

Anyone install after market seat heaters in a way which does not interfere with the side air bags? I am only interested in the bun toasters, i do not care about the lower back. Does anyone know if the air bags are in the bottom part (horizontal)of the seat or only the upper part (vertical).
  • slackersslackers Member Posts: 77
That delay doesn't sound right. Mine stops blinking in seconds. Maybe Cliffy will comment here. He's the 4X4 guru.

I did a custom order last year at the end of March, and my vehicle was delivered on July 8th, so it's about a 3 month wait. I too didn't want all the bells & whistles. In addition to what you listed, I added the fog lights which greatly extend your side vision. ( lot of deer where I live) My only suggestion would be to consider the dual zone AC. As my dealer was reviewing the options with me, he explained that there would be rear ceiling vents, and that the option was just for the rear seat controls. As it turns out, it's a complete rear AC system and without it, there are no ceiling vents. So now my only AC vents are in the front (get's a little hot for passengers in the 3rd row in the summer). I paid a couple hundred under TMV. Good luck

We ordered our 2002 SR5 about a year ago mainly due to the color combination (Blue Marlin Pearl w/gray cloth interior) we wanted. At the time, these were very hard to find. We also got the alloy package, rear A/C, and conveinence package. We had no desire for leather or a sunroof since the vehicle is constantly used to transport dogs, kids, and supplies from the hardware store. It was about a 2 month wait, but it was worth it. We dealt with the internet manager and only went in when it was time to pick up the vehicle. We paid about $1500 over invoice as well - this was about $2000 under MSRP at the time. Good luck.
  • shek3shek3 Member Posts: 72
we ordered a SR5, took 6 weeks got EXACTLY what we wanted.......Limited wheels, DVD, and 13 other options........they only allowed us to list 15 options total so we had to leave out some stuff(mats, hood protector.....things we could get on our own) Mike
PS we paid $900 over cost

We did not special order our Sequoia, what we did was work with the dealer. They had a person who just worked on dealer trades. They called me because my current Sienna lease was going to be up soon. I told her I wanted a Sequoia without a lot of bells and whistles. What she did was ask me what color preferences I had. We started from there. I told her white. She went to her computer and looked at all the white Sequoias in our region, that were comming in. She found some with the wheel package I wanted (AH) and we went from there, I also told her I wanted the roof rack, keyless entry, and airconditioning (rear). She found one with all that and the rear cargo cover (not expensive), and fog lights (not expensive)also CC which is electric seats. I told her to try to get it. She said that she had to see if the dealer would trade it, or it could have been ordered for someone. She called back and said we could have it and it would be shipped to our dealership. She even gave me a build date of Nov. 21. I picked it up the day after Thanksgiving. The whole thing took about three weeks. I love the vehicle and I'm glad that I ended up with fog lights. They are really useful and I think they also look good.

I did my homework on this site and knew what options I wanted, that helped. I even knew the codes and she was impressed. I don't know if all dealerships do this but I would shop around for someone who does. Also, Carson Toyota in California has a lot of Sequoias on their website. Not all are "Loaded". I looked at theirs to see what options came on a Sequoia that wasn't loaded. If you live near there you may want to try that dealership. I think they even sell cars out of state. I'm in Ohio so it was way too far for me.

I thank you all who kindly responded to my question. This is a great board that a lot of people responded to me with many tips. A lot of things happened on past Saturday. Local dealer (University Auto Park) tried to locate the sr5, but it had a moonroof, a electric chair, canopy airbag. They wanted $1,500 over the invoice. They wanted 6% over invoice if I wanted to factory order. Another (K.C. Summer) basically said the same thing. I am dealing with another dealership (Dan Hacht Toyota) who seems to be more reasonable. I am still thinking about factory ordering it. I was going to ask my dealership about rear A/C option and Kinnman's advice nailed it. So I will go with alloy package #1, convenient package, remote keyless, fog lamps (thanks to many responses), rear A/C, floor mats in black color.

One last question is does the side canopy airbag reduces insurance premium or is it really critical in side impact accident?

Sorry for one more question: Any tips on aftermarket dvd system or bun toaster?

    Thanks in advance.

What was described above about the 4wd taking 1-mile or more to engage is not usual for the vehicle. However, there are a couple of things that may change the time it takes to engage. From my own experience and from those of my customers, most often, if standing still, the 4wd will engage. Occasionally, you need to step on the gas for a second for it to engage. On a straight stretch of road, it should engage almost immediately unless one of a couple of situations are occuring. If you're accelerating, turning, or the wheels are in the process of slipping it may take a little more time to engage. If it does not engage immediately while moving, what I've found works is to first try getting off of the throttle for a second. This nomally works. If this doesn't, try just lightly applying the brakes. I have never had a problem engaging the system using either of these two options if it doesn't engage immediately.

One thing I will say is that you DO NOT want to just keep pushing the 4wd button on and off to try to speed up the process. Often this just makes the system take MUCH longer to engage.

    Hope this helps.

  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
One mile is not uncommon at all for the system to engage. There is a trick to make it happen nearly instantly. You need to change momentum. That means, if you are accelerating, quickly release the gas and hit it again. If you are going down a hill, tap the brake. You just need to interrupt the transfer case for just a moment so it can get the front drive shaft into place.

Alternately, you can do as I have always preached and leave it in 4WD all the time anyway.

I purchased the Audiovox all-in-one unit, which comes with the 8" screen, at Audio King (Ultimate Electronics) Overall I'm satisfied, but the unit appears a little sensitive as it locks up on a couple of our DVD's. Also did the wireless headphones. Factory warranty is 3yrs parts & labor, which gives me some comfort. Paid $1200 + headphones + installation, which all came to $1700. When I purchased the car, my dealer offered a similar unit (all-in-one) built by Rosen for $1500. The difference was the Rosen had a smaller screen. The 8" screen is nice for people in the 3rd row, however it does slightly hinder your rear vision. Do your homework, there's alot to choose from.

I am wanting to replace my 2000 Sienna XLE with a Sequoia. But, I dont' want to get caught in the redesign. Anyone have any ideas when it's up for change?
  • toyotakentoyotaken Member Posts: 897
Toyota typically uses a 5-year schedule between major redesigns for their products. With the Sequoia being introduced in 2001, I would not expect any drastic changes until 2005.

This question has come up before on this forum. Maybe someone can give you the specific breakdown.
All 10 speakers are indeed there, within those 6 enclosures.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
An Advanced Search for "speakers" in this topic should hit those messages. Link is on the left under Search by Keyword.

I've heard rumors here and there that the Sequoia will get a mild refresh this Fall. Supposedly the dash will be all new. Hopefully it will be similar to the new 4Runner/Sienna. Very nice materials were used in both of those recently redesigned vehicles.

    Good luck!

Just traded my '01 Sequoia SR5 Natural White/Warm Silver, Oak Leather, Dual AC, Lighted Running Boards, Upgrades Wheels and Luggage Rack with 20,000. No other real options. I got $30,450 (NADA Trade Value) for it. It was immaculate (it was my baby!).

I traded it for an '03 SR5, Phantom Gray/Silver, JBL 6 Disc, Rack, DRL, Fogs, Roof, Roof Deflector, Dual AC, Captain's charis, Curtain Airbags, Keyless, 7to4 Pin Hitch converter(??), Allow Wheel Package #2 (17 inchers) and Convenience Package. Invoice on this unit was $34,900 and change. I paid $35,400 and change. The dealer is adding leather for me.

While my deal on the new one is fair to good I was floored at the trade in/re-sale of my '01.

Why did I trade? Lower interest rates allowed me to trade up to a two year newer model with alot more equipment and lower my note substantially.

    Just can't beat these things.

BTW....the 2001 was flawless except for needing brakes at 19,000 miles.

Noticed some Limited models have the 120 volt outlet but can't get a straight answer from the dealers on how to order it - Is there any way to get this option or the visor on the SR5?

I ordered the rear audio controls and I have the outlet........could that be it?? I also have the dvd player

I would like to hear from Sequoia owners who drive their vehicles in the mountains frequently.
I am replacing my venerable old 4Runner, which does not have the power to climb the Colorado hills. Can the Sequoia make the I70 climb without running out of breath? Thanks.

I wonder if the new 2003 would be able to do it with the larger engine?
  • toyotakentoyotaken Member Posts: 897
I'm going to preface this by saying that I'm at home right now, so haven't had the oportunity to read the literature. However, I believe that these are only avialable on the Limited models as part of how they differentiate between the two models and part of the justification of the price difference.

It's a 1994 with the reliable 3.0 V6. I know this isn't the 4Runner board but I would like to add that the 4Runner in the TV Everest commercial is pumped up with a TRD supercharger. Kind of misleading.

02 Sequoia and took it to Westcliffe, CO via TX when brand new. Although I wasn't towing anything we had 4 people and gear for a week of camping. I was duly impressed with the power and routinely passed vehicles on inclines through NM and southern CO. I'm sure the new 4Runner is plenty powerful but the interior space of the Seq. is most welcoming. And my mileage is no worse than my 94. Bigger vehicle, more power, same fuel economy. Technology can be a good thing.

Your input is greatly appreciated. Still can't decide between the Sequoia, Land Cruiser, and Lexus GX. I wish Sequoia offered a navigation package. Maybe I'll go after market on the nav.

Making the move to Sequoia. SR5 loaded up and a few accessories. I really like how smooth it rides, the comfort (seats) and power of the V8. I have considered about 20 SUV's in the last 24 months for my quest and I have say the Sequoia has moved along well.

The only downside is I have to go out of town next weekend so my new ride will be at sitting waiting for me.

    Can't wait.

We've put 35500 miles on our 2001 Sequoia in about a year and a half. I'm taking it in on Saturday to have them look at the pesky rear storage door. I've heard there is a TSB regarding it but can't find the number. I also want to see what they say about the front seat padding TSB I've seen discussed on these boards. The driver's side window is stuttering and sticking a bit so I'll ask them about that. The air continues to emanate a musty odor. Has anyone solved that problem? Most importantly, I've followed the recent discussion regarding the brake TSB. Although I haven't had any problems yet, I believe my VIN matches the affected vehicles listed. I have a copy of the TSB and I don't know how I should approach my service department. I don't want to have problems or expensive brake repair after the regular warranty runs out. Any suggestions?
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
Talk to the Service Director. Tell him the symptoms you have and ask him to check for any relevant TSBs. It is pretty easy for him to do this. You will find the director is a bit more responsive to inquiries like this than the regular advisors.
