Wow! Suddenly the board springs to life.

Yeah, the Matrix is a cool (is it coo to say cool?) car. I test drove one while waiting for a oil change/lube in the fall. The wife nixed it because she still loves her Outback. Whatever keeps her happy. Congrats and have fun with the new baby.

Hope all is well with you and the family.
  • pschreckpschreck Member Posts: 524
Glad to hear you're doing well. I'm sure you'll love the 4Runner. I'd love to have a 4Runner and Matrix in the stable with the Sequoia, but I have to be practical.
  • oac3oac3 Member Posts: 373
c'mon Paul. Practicality stopped way back ....

    :)

Thanks for the love. The family and I are doing just great ! Hope same as yours.

Whatever keeps the wife happy, you say ? Man you won't believe the story behind the Matrix. Talk of keeping the wife happy ! Apologies to wives on this forum if this sounds sexist... Not meant to..

Check out this link for the Matrix saga:

    Phew !

Have I had a chance to drive the Matrix since bringing it home ? Take a guess....

    You guessed it :):):)

Now the Seq rests comfortably in the garage !!! So much for buying a fun car for work-commute.

Was told this by the dealership and they also got the same info from broker. It may be a Canadian rule but I was told it was to stop people buying a brand new Canadian vehicle and immediately selling in the U.S. for a profit. It is more likely a U.S. rule to prevent this happening and hurting U.S. sales??
The rule (if it exists)actually makes a lot of sense to me.

jhill-when I said I dealt with it,I mean that I sold both my 2001 and 2002 Sequoias (well actually the dealer sold to a broker)a year apart. In order for this to be attractive to Canadians it has to be a combination of an in-demand vehicle, vehicle in great shape, low kilometers, favorable U.S. exchange rate etc.

speaking of the board coming alive, us oldtimers will remember when "heatwave" was harassing us. We were constantly in the top 10 all the time!
  • oac3oac3 Member Posts: 373
The good ol' days....Nostalgic memories surely... For some like Cliffy and I, we have been here from Dec 2000. Way back when the Seq was just starting to rear its head in the market.

Welcome back, 714cut. Hope you never leave again, despite your giving up on the Seq. Now that my Seq looks like it will gather dust in the garage, maybe I'll sell it too. On second thought, I love the Seq too much to give up on it. It is a keeper...

Being here in Buffalo near the border, we get a few questions about Canadian vehicles, either through trade-ins or though wholesale.

At least for vehicles that I have seen come through here, we change out the Odometer and speedo here and there is specific documentation we have to send to both Toyota and the DMV to make sure that we are showing the accurate milage on the ODO. We have obtained a few wholesale vehicles from Canada that we've needed to go through the conversion. So from what I've seen, they don't have to be changed out at the border.

As for the 6-month rule, this is something that I've heard just in the last year or so with the HUGE number of grey market vehicles coming into the country. From what I have been told, Toyota along with several other manufacturers will not honor warranty claims for vehicles that are bought in Canada and then registered in the US within the first 6 months following the initial sale. Following that time period, the warranties will be honored with no problem. Toyota still frowns on Canadian vehicles being sold here in the states in general, even used, so we cannot sell them as certified used vehicles either.

We've been very careful here to make sure that all of the vehicles have been registered in Canada for at least 6 months just to make sure that there are no issues with warranty claims though.

    Hope this helps.

    Ken

This is something I obviously need to get more information on. I'm unsure where to start, though. Any ideas about who I should call to get a definitive answer to this question? Since the vehicle was placed into service on 2/21 and I bought it on 3/31, it was obviously not registered in Canada for 6 months. The dealer that I bought it from claims that the full warranty is in effect, even though it technically had to be sold as 'used'. They even tried to sell me the extended warranty. Should I call Toyota Customer Care directly? A service manager? The one thing I don't want is to call the wrong person and receive an answer that turns out later to be incorrect. Advice here will be greatly appreciated.
  • jhill0914jhill0914 Member Posts: 10
I just called customer care, and they assured me that as long as my VIN is in the US warranty system (which it is), the warranty will definitely be honored. They knew nothing of a 6 month rule, and said that even if the vehicle came down when it was only a day old the warranty would still be good. Ken, it sounds like you work for a dealer, so I'd be very interested in finding out where your information is coming from, how confident you are that it's correct, and how I could go about verifying that it does(n't) apply to my specific case. Thanks for your help.

Wonder what happened to the heater? Must have gotten a parachute deal with his GM job or something.

I looked at the Runner, liked it a lot, and realized it was too small for me to sit in....bummer!

My well-travelled 2001 Sequoia has a new stereo and new brakes courtesy of Toyota. No complaints! Finest vehicle I've ever owned or driven. Many thanks to the Edmunds boards. I read every single message from the start.

Cliffy should get a royalty or something, at the very least.
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
I like your idea. Send that in to Toyota! :D
  • slackersslackers Member Posts: 77
I'll second that on Cliffy's contributions. I call him the "gem". Another question for him.....I'm looking at that Revtek lift kit with the 2 1/2" front, 1 1/2" rear lift. I have a 2003 with the 17" wheels and don't plan to make any wheel/tire changes....just want the lift. Besides a wheel alignment, are there any glaring downsides to doing this ? Will my warantee be voided ?
  • pschreckpschreck Member Posts: 524
    I'll third it!

Man, it's like old timers reunion time on the board.
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
I have no idea about the lift kit. The only thing to caution you about is the obvious roll-over potential. The warranty will only be voided on those components that are affected by the lift kit. For instance, if you had problems with the drive shaft, Toyota could easily say it was the result of the lift and deny a claim based on that. It will not affect things like the ABS and TRACS sensors so you should be fine there.

I have often wondered what happened to heatwave. It's possible that he had some kind of major health problem or trauma. I'm not wishing that on him, I'm just saying that it's a possibility.

I'm guessing he was a marketing guy, because he could make the silliest crap sound like fact.

I know it had to make heatwave's blood boil when I had paisan post the Sequoia's transfer case specs on his webpage, proving once and for all that the Sequoia provided power to all four wheels at all times under normal conditions.

Of course he may have left the dark side and turned to the iForce, however, that's highly unlikely.

Steve or Tidester- any sign of Heatwave anywhere else on the boards? Nothing turns up in searches.

The usual caveats apply. As you increase the lift, you increase the angle at the U-joints and CV boots. Members in the Tundra family have indicated a few more failures of those components if you go above 2". This, of course, will depend on how the vehicle is being used.

Welcome back! Just one question for you, did you pay the "Access" price for your new
4-Runner? If so, did they give you "Access" value on your trade-in? Just curious since
the competition bureau in Canada has prohibited Toyota Canada from "forcing" dealers
to "fix" prices at the "Access Toyota" price.
    Thanks!

We have an '02 Sequoia, in the last couple months we have also seen these on after startup a couple times. A restart always clears it. I heard this may be a steering angle sensor issue, and there is a TSB BR001-02. We will be going in for the 15K service soon and will have them take a look. Otherwise the vehicle has been perfect, well it does do the cold "ticking" thing.

Yeah, I remember those days with Yossarian and then Heatweave on the board.

My Seq is hitting 40K and I'm still loving it. However, it's time to replace the tires sometime in summer. I know there were several postings on tires last year, but I am just too lazy to scan through all 7000+ postings.

Can somebody please refresh me with a type of Michelin tires that people seemed to prefer?

    Thanks.

I replaced the origional with the Michelin Cross Terrain. They are much quieter than the origional tires. I only have 5K on them and no problems. But what problems do you ever notice on new tires except maby a blow out or uneven wear. I got these mainly for their long wear, quiet ride and wet road handeling. I do NO off roading and no snow driving (2wd).
  • minuteman26minuteman26 Member Posts: 70
Would also recommend P275/70R16 size. The slightly increased tire diameter is more proportional to the truck, giving it an even more attractive appearance. A bonus is that a minor speedometer error at 60mph is now corrected down to less than 1 mph as measured by GPS.

Ride is smoother than the factory Dunlops. The rain/snow traction is supposed to be better, but I can't vouch for the snow down here in Alabama.
  • toyotatoystoyotatoys Member Posts: 118
Does this bigger set still fit the wheel wells without scrapping when we make sharp turns, as in parking?

    Thanks for the advice.
  • minuteman26minuteman26 Member Posts: 70
Not even remotely close to fenders with the larger tire size. I wouldn't consider it otherwise.

Didn't Sequoia go a an inch larger diameter wheel this year as an option? Bet they didn't change the body any at all. It looks like the Sequoia was actually designed for the 275/70R16.

    Greetings:

I am looking at buying a Sequoia SR5 with certain options I put together from Edmunds' option list (leather package, side airbags, roof rails, etc.). Invoice with these options was about $36,000, pretty much the same as invoice for a very well equipped Expedition.

The three New York area Toyota dealers that I contacted through Edmunds all got back to me saying that I could not have the SR5 with just those options. Rather, they rattled off additional options that I needed to take such as sunroof, aluminum wheels, automatic climate control, etc., etc.), which (they said) would push invoice to about $39,500.

Any suggestions where in the NY area I can find a dealer who does not try to sell me what I don't want?

    Thanks.
  • kinnmankinnman Member Posts: 52
I purchased mine (MN) with the exact options I wanted. Unless something has changed, you should still be able to customer order. I too was given the story "it can't be done" at one dealership. Tell them to check with the Regional sales manager. It took about 3 1/2 months for delivery. I highly recommend the dual zone AC, otherwise you lose the vents in the rear ceiling.

One of the sensor went bad, replaced under warranty.

    Katoomba

Do yourself a favor and try other dealers (neighboring states). After 2 months of run around from 3 NY dealers(and regional reps)on Long Island I went to Fred Anderson Toyota in Raleigh, North Carolina. I dealt with dealer by phone and internet. My SR5 exactly as ordered will be in 1st week of May. They have ordered others exactly as people wanted and delivered. If you special order you WILL wait 12-16 weeks but if you get what you want might be worth the wait. They might be able to "find" one for you sooner. The money I saved dealing with an "honest" salesman as compared to NY (who could not get QA package anyway) will cover all my travel expenses to go and get it. The answer I got from NY was "some options are not available in this region" I looked and found a region who could get what I wanted. After reading many posts in here, Cliffy1 might be able to give you a better answer.
  • katoombakatoomba Member Posts: 2
In the meantime, I checked Toyota's own website. They have a "build your own Toyota" feature, where you need to provide your ZIP code to get started. Lo and behold, with a NY area ZIP code, the SR5 "building process" will lead you straight to one of three required option packages, the least expensive of which is about $4,000.

    What a racket!
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
It isn't a racket. Its called "just in time" manufacturing and it means that there are only certain configurations that Toyota sends to your region. If you want something besides what is due in to your region, you'll have to find a dealer willing to place the order and you have to be prepared to wait. It takes 4 to 8 weeks to get a special order built and delivered.

Many dealers don't like ordering "odd ball" configurations like leather without a moonroof. In my region, that one would never sell on our lot. Dealers do look at things like that because it is our experience that close to 1 third of special orders never get delivered because the customer changes his mind. That means we are stuck with the odd-ball.
  • oac3oac3 Member Posts: 373
I have a Michelin M/S tires in 275/70/R16 on my '01 Seq. It certainly fits the wheel wells better than the stock form. I like the Michelins, aggresive, quiet, good grip on the road (mostly dry pavement), and handling is excellent. I strongly recommend it. Maybe the slightly better is the Michelin C/T, but they are both excellent tires.

Oh, my OEM was the Bridgestone Dueller which lasted all of 25K miles, lol.

The sad part for me these days is that none of us can find enough excuse to drive the Seq.
  • sequoiasoonsequoiasoon Member Posts: 223
If the leather is what is causing the hassle, there are many posts in here about people doing "aftermarket leather" for about half the price. I have even seen them auctioned on e-bay.
You might be able to get everything you want with cloth and upgrade seats after (also seen MANY wrecked Sequoia's in on line junk yards)(copartfinder.com)
  • gkatz1gkatz1 Member Posts: 296
Not only is aftermarket leather available, it is often of better quality, is cheaper and can be ordered in many different colors/combinations.
  • lorainemax2lorainemax2 Member Posts: 35
That is what I did. Got an SR5 with everything but Leather and then had Classic Soft Trim add it after purchase.

Higher quality hide, cheaper than factory and better looking in my opinion.

In Denver we recently experienced the biggest snowstorm since 1913. The snow was 33 inches on the level. By the time I dug out, the snow had settled to about 24 inches. It was very heavy and wet. My '03 Sequoia Limited could NOT make it through. But that did not surprise me, because nobody else could either, unless they had chains on three or four wheels. I heard stories about people driving pickup trucks with lift kits that made it without chains. I would bet the Sequoia would have done better had the snow been cold and light.

Went to dealer and got upgraded to bigger brakes and calipers at know cost. It's about a all day job. They don't want to call it a recall but they fixed it.
  • toyotatoystoyotatoys Member Posts: 118
I had mine done a couple of weeks ago, but when I looked at the receipt the only part that I could recognize there were the new calipers. I don't think they replaced them with bigger discs. Now I am confused.
