Im interested in a Canadian Purchase but concerned about how easy it would be to change the odometer from metric to US. For those whove imported vehicle back into the US - will a US dealer replace the unit? Has anyone done this in California and will this affect the title of the vehicle. Thanks.

I bought my 02' LE 2 weeks ago from Richmond Nissan in Vancouver. Jon L. has all the details on it. All in all is was VERY easy. I was a bit stressed about it at first but after many many emails with Jon I was ready to dive in. The biggest problem for me was A) getting a loan for the car because it was being bought in Canada. B) getting the funds converted to Canadian. there are very few lenders that will do this.

I would recommend you not tell the bank that you are buying it in Canada and just tell them the name of the dealership. If I had not told my bank what I was doing they would have never known. You might be able to make special provisions with the dealer to allow you to bring US funds but make sure you check first.

I am in Seattle and registering it is no big deal, though after I bought it I went on vacation and need to go down and do it :-) I have spoken with a person that live about 10min from me, he bought the same PF as I have and he says it was pretty easy.

If you have any questions feel free to email me. I am sure Jon has been in contact with you but if you have any other specific questions let me know.

    Paul,
I'll add one more comment to Byran's nice post. There are a number of speedometer places in the Seattle area that specialize in conversions (one place is even named "Kilometers to Miles"). What some Calif people do is just stop at one on the way through and get it done. Then it would be in miles before you even registered it at home.

With a 1 hr drive up 495 in MA in the am, I need to install one in the 01 Pathy. It sounds like the hard wiring is not too difficult, but looking at the console(Temp Gauge, compass, etc) I'm not sure where to mount the detector as I dont really see a flat surface.Any pictures?
Where did you put yours? And what type?Valentine, Escort,-which is the best?
    Thanks,

Most detectors come with windshield mounting kits that use suction cups. If you mount the detector near the compass/temp gauge where you can also obtain 12v power for hardwiring, then this makes the most sense.

Hey, I have a 2001 PF & was wondering if any one else has had these problems:
    1) My brakes are pulsating like I need the rotors turned... with only 16000 miles on it.
    2) I've rotated my tires twice & both times I noticed a lot of tire wear on the outer edges of the fronts. I'm hoping I just need the camber adjusted or they're toe'd in too much. I just hope the dealership doesn't tell me they all do that.

Also, something that surprised me... I was checking the transfer case fluid for the first time (15,000 mile maint.) & when I removed the fill plug fluid ran out until it dropped to that level. Dealership says they overfill them at the factory & it's nothing to worry about. Just let it drain to the fill plug. Thought you might want to know. Thanks...

Funny thing happened today at the dealer. I stopped in for the 15K oil change and tire rotation. I asked the service woman writing up the order to make sure they will lubricate the propeller shaft. As the Service Manager walking by overheard this he said yes they do it as part of the oil change/lube. Good. Then he adds that it is time to change out the fluid in the differential, which is needed for vehicles with limited slip differentials (LSD). I told him this PF did not have LSD, and he said all of them do. I said no, that was an option I didn't get and to not worry about changing out the fluid. I wonder how many PF owners have paid for this not knowing otherwise?
  • meca2meca2 Member Posts: 284
Yes the PF brake seem to be less than adequate.
Several the last year have had the rotors turned.
Just be sure and have them install new pads if you
have the rotors turned. There is something about
    turning them on the vehicle?
The caster and camber is not adjustable. Sounds
like your PF has to much toe-end. I had my PF
in for adjustment before it had 6k on it.
  • dbenjamin1dbenjamin1 Member Posts: 12
xplor- thanks for that- I wasnt sure if there was any other alternatives to mounting besides the standard suction cups.
Anyone want to chime in on brand of radar and why?
    Thanks,

dbenjamin1, I have always sided with BEL, but I think their remote unit did not work well. If $$ is no issue, go with Valentine, as I have not heard a bad review on them. I also have an old unit from Radio Shack that has had no problem for 10 years. The only new twist in south Jersey is that I have picked up more laser warnings, especially going over the bridges into Philly. Even around my neighborhood, I have noticed more laser and K and Ka bands, while X is diminishing. I have my BEL suctioned to the front lower windshield, and plugged into the cig lighter. Even though it is somewhat blocked by the resting wipers, the range has not suffered.

    Hey all,
Does anyone know the part number for the '01 Pathy oil filter? I stopped to pick up one yesterday, and it's about as big as a 6 oz. beer can. All the exterior packaging mentions numerous Sentra models, but not the Pathy.
I asked the parts guy and he said that he wasn't sure if it was that filter or not, some have a different size for '01. Sounds questionable. Thanks in advance for any help

My pathy's brakes are pulsing as well (60km/hr to 0km/hr in about 10 seconds) you can feel the pulsing of the brakes - sounds like the rotors are warped or ?? Anyone else with this problem.
By the way there is only 12,000km on the vehicle. Will I have to pay for this to be repaired (turned etc.?)

I don't know why you would buy any other radar detector than the Valentine One. It has saved my [non-permissible content removed] countless times. Nothing else even comes close. You're fooling yourself if you think you can find a better radar detector. No, it's not perfect - it falses like every other detector but with a little practice it's very easy to tell what's real. Car and Driver hadn't reviewed detectors in 5 years until this month. 5 years ago the V1 dominated the rankings. Guess what happened this time? Same. V1 destroyed BEL and everyone else. See for yourself: http://www.caranddriver.com/xp/Caranddriver/features/2002/february/200202_feature_detectors.xml

or do a search on CNET. People are fanatical about this detector. And it comes with a hardwire kit that makes the job very simple (especially if you follow the guidlines I posted before).

I had to have my rotors resurfaced at around 15k miles on my '01 QX4 and it was done under warranty. Not sure about Nissan. I'm about to bring it in for the 30k service and I'm having the problem again. This time, I might see if I can get the brake pads changed.
  • bgritzbgritz Member Posts: 139
Note to all automatic Pathy owners.
The self-adjusting rear drum brakes only self-adjust when the vehicle is stopped and the E-brake is applied. If you are only placing it in P, and not setting the E-brake, then the rear drums might not be adjusted and therefor less effective than they are supposed to be.
If so, the front rotors would be handling a dis-proportionate amount of the force required to stop, thus heating them up hotter, and more quickly than normal, causing them to warp.
Another factor is lug nuts. Lug nuts that are tightened to tightly can cause warpage of the rotors as it can flex the assembly.
Since I purcased a torque wrench and have used it when tightening down my wheels, 90% of my pulsing has disappeared. ( the other 10% is probably from a previous incident involving someone cutting me off while I was towing a trailer resulting in hot rotors)
We have almost 40k on our '01 SE, and have VERY minimal pulsing, and ONLY if I have accidently heated them up a bit coming out of the mtns.
    ;-)

Hey BGRITZ... is this something you can do every once in a while? Or do you need to set the parking brake every time? I've always used an impact wrench (w/ the proper torque stick to bring the force down) but I'm still getting warping at only 15,000 miles.

I tried to get the inner door panels off of our 2001 pathfinder last night, got all the door clips released (around outside perimeter of door), removed the screw from the door "handle" (used to pull door closed from inside) and also removed screw from behind other handle (mechanically opens door from inside). There seems to be at least one screw still holding the panel on to the actual door. Does anyone have any guidance for me.

    Thanks

Yes the best radar detector are YOUR TWO EYES.

But as an aid on the road, you just can not go wrong with VALENTINE ONE. For it is worth every cent.

Davie- thanks for the tip- I've heard about Valentine and the great praises that come from it. Sounds like you're a bit fanatical about it too ;)
Pond- you're absolutely correct- eyes are the best, along with driving the speed limit. But, sometimes, the ride is so nice in the pathy, i dont notice that I'm creeping close to 75..and the fact that the po-po here use an assortment of unmarked vehicles.
Thanks to you all for the tip. Valentine it is.

    Smokey,
Since we have the 5-speed, ours (E-brake) gets pulled every time we exit the Pathy. My best guestimate is that if your set it a couple times (even @ one stop) it would self-adjust. I don't know this for sure, but it would make sense from a mechanical aspect.

I have been reading up in the alignment problems with regards to the '01 pathy's. I have approx 7k miles and have been experiencing a slight grinding noise coming from my front end ever since I bought it. We were going on a trip this past weekend and decided to check the tire pressure where I found cupping on both fromt tires on the outside. Could this be the grinding noise and secondly, is the alignment causing it? I find it hard to believe that after only 7k miles on pavement it could be off already. Aside from this, this truck is absolutely awsome. No wonder both edmunds and Motor Trend love it so much......

Any Canadian pricing ( whats a good deal) would be appreciated. Can you get buy on 87 oct. or does it need premium fuel? Thanks for the comments.

I live in the Seattle area and purchased from Richmond Nissan in BC. I had a great experience. I waited several months before getting the KM speedo swapped out. I went to a local speedometer shop close to Seattle. It did not take long at all. They knew what they were doing and really did care. Another guy from CA, that I spoke to, used the same shop and then drove the remainder of the way to CA. I think he said there are fewer shops that do that in CA. Probably because they're further from Canadian border. You will need to inform the shop, that PF is canadian, AWD-4wd, with auto-on headlights. They will probably ask for the vin# too. If you have the titanium faceplate, let them know ahead of time about that as well. They do not see too many of them. I had the titanium face plate. Went well. If you want the name of the shop, provide your email and I'll respond directly to your email address.

I know I have seen some information on this board previously, but rather than spending forever looking for it, can anyone recommend new tires. I have the bridgestones on it now, wouldn't have those again if someone gave them away. My tires are wearing terribly on the outsides. I live on extreme rural roads, and am hard on tires (my brakes last a long time though!). I don't off road, but do have snow, ice and drive at the beach in the sand. I have a 2001 PF LE. Thanks
  • xplorx4xplorx4 Member Posts: 621
It sounds like you're gonna want a set of all-terrain tires. I recommend the BFG AT ko (find a similar size to your current tires on www.bfgoodrichtires.com) or the Bridgestone Dueler AT. Michelin ATX are also good. Check out the tire mfr's web pages for more details.

I just picked up a new 02 Pathfiner yesterday (2/24/02.) It's a black SE auto with tan interior, SE Popular package (Bose 6 disc, Auto climate control), Micron filter, Floor mats & Body side molding (and it only had 4 miles on the OD so I figure I was the only one to test drive it.) I ended up paying $28,500.00. Did I get a good deal or did I get screwed?
  • lofquistlofquist Member Posts: 281
That's just over invoice so would be considered a good deal (I assume it has the sunroof package too - most all do). But just for comparision if you go up to Toronto or Vancouver that same SE but also with AWD and LSD will sell for about $24,700. I still get lots of mail about how to go to Canada to buy and I'm glad to help out anyone. Just email.
    -Jon
  • tnjrobi1tnjrobi1 Member Posts: 41
Actually it does not have the Sunroof package. Do you think I still got an OK deal?

And I would have loved to come to Canada to buy, but I live in Tennessee and that would have required a lot of time, travel and time off work.

And since I'm a new Pathfinder owner is there anything I should be weiry of or be keeping a check on as far as my Pathfinder goes?
  • lofquistlofquist Member Posts: 281
Sure I think you got a good deal! And you will love your new truck just as we all do here. The Canada thing, as fabulous as the prices might be, isn't going to be for everyone. I've heard back from people who went 1400 miles to Canada, and others who said 200 miles is too much.

I've read alot about Americans purchasing a pathfinder here in Canada, specifically Vancouver. As a Canadian living in British Columbia, I'm hoping someone can fill me in on what a good price is over invoice. We can buy a pathfinder Chilcoot edition which is essentially an xe with a number of additions such as all mode, automatic trans, bose stereo etc . I've determined that the invoice price is $30,775 Canadian but don't have a clue how much to offer over this price. I realize that this price includes dealer holdback .Secondally anyone tell me if I could use fuel other than premium ( expensive up here) Thanks !

    To all,

A month or so ago I posted a message related to rust colored spots on my Sierra Silver Pathfinder. I have been using hand glaze to get rid of most of the spots, but they have been coming back. Yesterday, I went to the local Nissan dealer for an oil change and mentioned the problem to the service manager. He said the problem is rail dust, and it is very common on Pathfinders. According to him, rail dust is contaminants in the air such as brake dust (and railroad track dust particularly from transport) which adheres itself to the rocker panels and particularly the rear hatch. He said Nissan has issued TSB in the past, but as you can imagine, it is not covered under the paint warranty. The colors most affected appear to be white and silver, and bronzed gray. The suggested method of removal is clay bar (as recommended in previous messages on this board) or rubbing compound. However, he did not know of any product that could prevent the spots from appearing in the future. I bought a clay bar kit yesterday, but I am now waiting for the Michigan weather to improve so I can dedicate some "quality time" on the repair. Any tips on using a clay bar and the overall process would be appreciated.

I hope this information helps those who are out there and may be frustrated with the same problem.

Yokohama Geolander's II, Dunlop's TG35, and Pirelli Scorpions, are good values and will last if you keep proper air/rotation schedules. Around $80-90 each. NTB is an excellent place to buy tires. Goodyear makes a HT version of their Wrangler, moves up in price but is an excellent tire @$110ea. Michelins are still overpriced for light trucks in my opinion at nearly $140 each. My first Pathfinder had the Bridgestone Duellers-never again! Current Pathfinder has the Dunlop's-so far they have been great.
  • lofquistlofquist Member Posts: 281
I don't hear back from a lot of people what the sales price was, but I think it would be rare to get one for less than CAD$750 over invoice. If you want the name of the manager at the dealer that all the US people go to in Vancouver, just drop me a note.

BTW, that 2002 Chilkoot Special Edition Pathfinder (4wd of course) converted to US dollars (and even including duty) is $21,000! Go on up and get em!

I too had the Deullers and would never EVER buy them again. They were short lived, slick in the rain, and completely worthless in the snow.

I ended up going with a 265/70R16 tire called the "Pathfinder (Ha :-) ) Sport SUV" from Discount Tire aka http://tire.com/. They are a 60k tire that is pretty deep (17/32nds), rides great, laughs at rain and snow, and performs Very well off-road. After almost 15k, they don't seem to have hardly worn at all! -pics at http://photos.yahoo.com/bgritz

I looked at the BFG AT KO's, but was discouraged by their high price ($140-$155) for the 16" rims, lower miles, and noise factor. If I were off-roading 2x a month these would be a better choice for me but we only get out on the trails 6-8 times/year.

The Scorpions, and the Geolander, looked great, but I was looking for a bit longer-lasting tire for the $$$.

good luck and let us know.

Today I brought my 01 Pathfinder in for the third time regarding the transmission slipping while shifting from 2nd to 3rd. Once again I'm told there isn't a problem. When the truck is cold it slips for maybe two shift cycles. Its as if someone pops it into neutral and then back into drive. The service guy says that it is normal for the tranny to shift hard when cold. That's fine but I didn't complain about hard shifting! I'm so sick of dealers not spending the time to find problems. I called Nissan consumer affairs to assist. I'm going to leave it there until they fix it!
  • yoeddyyoeddy Member Posts: 46
In regards to the trans slippage, there is a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) that covers the problem. In your case(and mine), the transmission control module (TCM)needs to be replaced. I have 01 QX4 with the problem and going to my dealer with the TSB on thursday to get the problem fixed. I mentioned the problem a while ago and also was told it was normal. This time I mentioned the TSB and he didn't know that one existed. So, it should be interested when I give him a copy of it. The Pathfinder TSB can be found on http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/tsb/Index.cfm

I can email you the Infiniti TSB if you'd like.

I just got a call from the dealer. Last night the service manager took the truck home and this morning experienced a slip first hand. They advised me that there was a problem and that they were working on it. Yesterday I mentioned the TSB and they played dumb. Hopefully it will be repaired today. I will keep everyone posted. Thanks.

I scrolled through Discount tire site but couldn't locate "Pathfinder Sport SIV". Can you furnish more info, brand name. This outfit doesn't have a store near me so need to find something I can get from NTB or Sam's. Does different size (265/70 instead of OE of 255/65) present any problems.
Everybody, best rotate all 5 tires I presume, especially if contemplating a change in size, but if plan to stay with original size OK to just rotate 4 on car and leave spare alone?
  • bgritzbgritz Member Posts: 139
    Baddestbob1,

The tire is actually made by Kelly/Springfield. A 265/70R16 equates to about a 30.6" x 10.5" size tire. When new, mine actually measured 31.25" x 10.5. They rub a wee bit when backing up @ full steering wheel lock, but look much better than the OEM rubber!

Do a tire size search for 265/70 R16 and look for the "Pathfinder sport SUV"

email me if you still can't find it and I wll post a screen grab for you to go to.

Service manager called me back today and told me that a TSB was put out yesterday regarding my transmission problem (I've seen this TSB for months). I've taken the Pathfinder in for this problem three times and mentioned the control module and the TSB each time. Well this new TSB applies to the "same" control module which they are going to replace. Why did it take three times and alot of nagging to have this resolved?

I realize that the pathfinder has a tow rating of 5000 lbs, but I've read a few posts from those who have towed and were not impressed with the braking. Any info on this subject would be appreciated as I'm thinking of purchasing one but I live in a mountainous region (British Columbia, Canada) and I want to make sure this vehicle will tow a 3200lb boat through the mountain highways without problems. Thanks
  • meca2meca2 Member Posts: 284
The brakes seem to get better after 10k. But not
good enough to pull the rated towing weight without
very good trailer brakes. Also the rear springs are
to weak for any trailer tong weight. I had to
install "air spring" on the rear before I could hall
any dive equipment inside without the body bottom
    out on the axle.
