    Having the speed displayed was very important and helpful when I had my Garmin that was mounted on my windshield. A "heads up" speed display, plus it showed the approximate speed limit. So, my guess is that the engineers had the value and said "well, where should I put the speed? Up at the top I guess. Maybe someone will want it".

    The speed display can be changed to show internet connection strength, cell phone connection and text message alerts

    That's optional...much like the 24hr time you are using there. I opted not to have that eat my screen real estate in my V60.
