MDX Trade-In - CARMAX a possibility?

I am gathering information from a few Northern Virginia Accra dealers with regard to the purchase of a 2017 AWD MDX. Negotiating a fair trade-in for my 2011 MDX will be crucial to getting a good OTD price. Has anyone tried taking their car to CARMAX first for an appraisal, before going to a dealership? is there a chance that CARMAX might make a better offer for my current MDX? Appreciate any thoughts on this.

Sure, that's a good plan and with a real number in hand from CarMax, you make it easy for the dealer. And if the dealer passes, you have a backup.
The wrinkle is how your state does the taxes - often you get a tax break trading in a car versus selling it yourself.5 -

CarMax gave us an appraisal of $12,500 .. the Subaru dealer gave us a trade value of $10,500. I pulled out the CarMax sheet and showed it to the salesman - after "going to the tower" they upped the trade value to match.
