Depends on your climate, as jason says. Where I am, not really necessarily, and I find them rather ugly. Some people also like them for cutting down reflected glare, which can be a problem in certain cars.

I don't use one here in the high desert but my car is mostly parked in my garage. I have a windshield screen that I use a lot when running errands and that blocks most of the sun from hitting the dash.5 -

I use a windshield screen when parked, too. That has the added benefit of keeping the interior a little bit cooler.6
