Programming homelink transmitter button to garage door remote

I just purchased an Audi Q5 and am having trouble programming one of the homelink buttons to my garage door opener. I have a 1996 liftmaster professional line 1/3 garage door opener with a Chamberlin remote. I continually receive an error message indicating there was a error with the programming process. Any suggestions on how to remedy?

    I think you should ask the dealer you bought the car from to help you with this. In theory, the sales staff are trained to do this. It should be part of customer service.
