DC has some strange laws, like no radar detectors, for instance.
Thing is, for $50, even if I win, what are court fees nowadays? Probably more than half that. It's not worth taking a day off to save maybe 20 bucks.

I agree with your philosophy on not contesting the ticket, though.
Once a friend saw a cop make a u-turn after he went speeding through a yellow-to-red light, he ditched the car on the closest block and just walked 4 blocks to my house, cause he knew they couldn't ticket a parked car for anything!

My wife got a ticket a while back and our rates just went back down now, 3 years later.

I don't know how they do it in MD/DC, but in New Jersey AND in New York, the records of all motor vehicle summonses are sent to the DMV in the state in which you have your driver's license. Many people mistakenly believe that they cannot receive points on their license for a violation that occurs out of state. Wrong. This is because of a Reciprocity Agreement between most states. That includes parking tickets, by the way. DMV notifies your insurance company, who may or may not assess points. I have been told that this occurs approximately half the time, but I do not know the criteria used by the insurance companies in deciding whether or not to assess points.
On the other hand, at least here in NJ, for any moving violation (including speeding), you have to be able to ID the driver of the vehicle, not just the vehicle itself. New Jersey does not use so called "red light cameras" for that exact reason. In the case of an unoccupied vehicle, however, a summons can be issued for a parking or equipment violation whether a driver is present or not. That summons becomes the responsibility of the registered owner when a driver cannot be identified.
I hope this helps.

I didn't realize speed cameras were in the U.S. now.
-Dennis
The ticket specifically stated that's why they do not assess points - the driver isn't identified.
I believe DC and MD have that reciprocal agreement, maybe VA and DE too.
Still, I think this is communist. 36 in a 25? If you drive slower in DC, it's actually dangerous because some hot head behind you will at the very minimum tail gate you.

As for unsafe speeds, I'd much rather be following someone going at a slow and -steady- pace than someone whose speed changes dramatically; I believe that situation is much more likely to cause an accident. Last night I followed a guy on a Harley whose speed changed 20 MPH on a regular basis; 35 MPH to 55 MPH, then back down. Just letting off the gas on a bike slows it very quickly, much more quickly than a car will slow down; therefore this guy was not showing any brake lights when he'd pull his throttle-off stunts. I give motorcycle riders a big cushion, more than I do cars, but even so I found myself jamming the brakes repeatedly to keep from running up his pipes. Bad for him, bad for me, bad for anyone behind me (which there was). What a maroon. This was not an isolated incident either, just a rather extreme case. We have a lot of Harley riders around these parts. I don't know why they do it; my guess is that they're addicted to all the racket the blasted things make when the throttle is opened and closed.
rgds,

PS: I'm by no means anti-motorcycle, or even anti-Harley. I personally don't understand the allure behind all that racket, especially coming from the Hog that goes by my house every morning just before dawn ;-) But to each their own.
Stock ones aren't bad, actually.

Dennis, DC isn't the US!!!:-)

That's quicker than *all* of the WRXs they've ever tested, by the way.

From what I've read so far, the XT auto just doesn't offer the same level of responsiveness as the MT.
Hey, let's go test drive some XTs when Stevens Creek gets them (should be soon).

On the DMV Webpage it states (and I had a DA verify) that NY does not recognize ANY tickets from out of state (except for Ontario and Quebec)

Problem is, what would you own next? Where do go from there? Buy a slower SUV, like a Porsche Cayenne S? LOL
I said it felt as quick or quicker than the Altima I tested, and that was taking it easy! I did not run her to redline.
Bottom line? I think Subaru is severely underestimating the power the XT's engine is making. I mean, do the math. C&D's last XS took 9.6 seconds IIRC. You really think 45hp could almost cut that time in half?
Let's be honest, that engine is making 240-260hp or so. The understated it to tame insurance rates.
I love a good controversy. :-)

Usually gearing will be relaxed with a more powerful engine, they did the opposite. They could probably have sacrificed a second or so and gotten better EPA ratings.

Paisan: I'm not so sure about tickets. I had a red light on Staten Island that got picked up by my insurance co. I've got a Jersey license, so there must have been a cross-check there. I would expect it to go the other way too (at least with N.J./N.Y.).

juice: I'm starting to believe your conspiracy theory. Do you think the early production XTs all have higher output than rated, but will eventually go to the rated output when they sell in volume (I hope not)?

Think of how easy this engine would be to modify down the road, I mean it's a light pressure turbo, after all.

I know -- I can't wait until Cobb comes out with an AccessECU for the XT. It's going to rock!
I'm also wondering if SOA would pull a fast one (no pun intended) and drop the 2.5T in the WRX next model year. But then again, thinking about the EPA hit...
Ken
ask Stephen about his opinion on it.
suspension? sure, just know what you're getting and if you need it. wheels & tires? you bet. exhaust, why not-- love that boxer growl.
powertrain mods I'll pass on though, thanks. buy a vehicle that has enough power in stock configuration or have something else reliable enough to drive.
-Colin
Ditto the above and all the rest of that post. I used to drive tweaked cars as daily drivers, but got tired of the hassle. Now I buy a car I like "out of the box" for everyday driving, and save the tweaking for occasional use vehicles.
rgds,

WRX is a front-runner for the next car. But we'll check out Impreza 2.5 and Forester XT too... maybe the Outback Sport.
No more Hondas for us (sorry Pat), back to Subaru-only garage.
Jon
Actually, I'm really trying to get my next vehicle as I want it out-of-the-box, instead of doing 100 customizations myself. I don't have that kind of time any more!

Kate: That's exciting news! That's quite a range you're shopping for. Have you guys gone out test driving yet?
Ken
Maybe Paisan will get it, if no one else does :-)
