  • Interesting. I guess you'll have to be careful who you loan your car out to. Who knows how many tickets they'll rack up in your behalf?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
It allowed you to assign the fine to someone else, and of course you could contest it in court.

DC has some strange laws, like no radar detectors, for instance.

Thing is, for $50, even if I win, what are court fees nowadays? Probably more than half that. It's not worth taking a day off to save maybe 20 bucks.

  • Hmmm...I'm thinking of the fun I could have assigning the tickets to someone else. Maybe you should put together a list of people you're not too fond of and start randomly assigning out your tickets :-) J/K

I agree with your philosophy on not contesting the ticket, though.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Yup they can never ticket a car for a moving violation, they can only ticket a person. That's why redlight camera tickets and speeding camera tickets all come back as essentially parking tickets, pay the fine and they'll never be on your record.

Once a friend saw a cop make a u-turn after he went speeding through a yellow-to-red light, he ditched the car on the closest block and just walked 4 blocks to my house, cause he knew they couldn't ticket a parked car for anything! :)

Most states include the court fee even if you don't fight it, but for $50, you'll looose more than that in park fees, lost wages, gas, tolls, etc.

I think and hope you're right, that they're like parking tickets.

My wife got a ticket a while back and our rates just went back down now, 3 years later.

    juice,

I don't know how they do it in MD/DC, but in New Jersey AND in New York, the records of all motor vehicle summonses are sent to the DMV in the state in which you have your driver's license. Many people mistakenly believe that they cannot receive points on their license for a violation that occurs out of state. Wrong. This is because of a Reciprocity Agreement between most states. That includes parking tickets, by the way. DMV notifies your insurance company, who may or may not assess points. I have been told that this occurs approximately half the time, but I do not know the criteria used by the insurance companies in deciding whether or not to assess points.

On the other hand, at least here in NJ, for any moving violation (including speeding), you have to be able to ID the driver of the vehicle, not just the vehicle itself. New Jersey does not use so called "red light cameras" for that exact reason. In the case of an unoccupied vehicle, however, a summons can be issued for a parking or equipment violation whether a driver is present or not. That summons becomes the responsibility of the registered owner when a driver cannot be identified.

    I hope this helps.

you can also get your license suspended for failure to pay a parking ticket.
  • jlemolejlemole Member Posts: 345
New Jersey's proposed insurance reform legislation would require all moving violations (points or not) to be reported to insurance companies. All drivers would be categorized by DMV for risk/rate purposes based on any your entire driving record, again whether points were issued or not.

If you get a ticket out of state, I think it has to do with the municipality that you get busted in. I got a speeding ticket in the tiny town of Nichols, SC. I paid the $125 fine and it never made it to my NJ record.

I didn't realize speed cameras were in the U.S. now.

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Len: I see what you mean and I agree.

The ticket specifically stated that's why they do not assess points - the driver isn't identified.

I believe DC and MD have that reciprocal agreement, maybe VA and DE too.

Still, I think this is communist. 36 in a 25? If you drive slower in DC, it's actually dangerous because some hot head behind you will at the very minimum tail gate you.

Juice, sorry to hear about your ticket, I hope it works out to be nothing more than a "parking ticket" type of violation.

As for unsafe speeds, I'd much rather be following someone going at a slow and -steady- pace than someone whose speed changes dramatically; I believe that situation is much more likely to cause an accident. Last night I followed a guy on a Harley whose speed changed 20 MPH on a regular basis; 35 MPH to 55 MPH, then back down. Just letting off the gas on a bike slows it very quickly, much more quickly than a car will slow down; therefore this guy was not showing any brake lights when he'd pull his throttle-off stunts. I give motorcycle riders a big cushion, more than I do cars, but even so I found myself jamming the brakes repeatedly to keep from running up his pipes. Bad for him, bad for me, bad for anyone behind me (which there was). What a maroon. This was not an isolated incident either, just a rather extreme case. We have a lot of Harley riders around these parts. I don't know why they do it; my guess is that they're addicted to all the racket the blasted things make when the throttle is opened and closed.

    rgds,
    -wdb

PS: I'm by no means anti-motorcycle, or even anti-Harley. I personally don't understand the allure behind all that racket, especially coming from the Hog that goes by my house every morning just before dawn ;-) But to each their own.

I was just outside and heard one go by. Boy can they get loud.

    Stock ones aren't bad, actually.

I know a bunch of Harley riders. NOT ONE of them leaves the stock baffles in the pipes. There is an urban myth about the baffles robbing power from the engine, which may or may not be true. The 2-stroke folks long ago learned that a properly designed exhaust can add power, and even REDUCE noise, at the same time. Tuned exhausts add power, open pipes just add noise.

    Cheers,

You guys are supposed to be my friends. Now you tell me 0-60 is in 5.3 seconds, how am I ever going to cure my XT envy?

That's quicker than *all* of the WRXs they've ever tested, by the way.

In my experience, AT in Subarus can differ noticeably (in terms of shifting style etc) from a specific car to a specific car, in the same model, the same year, the same trim. I hope Juice's was just a bad (well, not-so-good) apple. Any more testers out there?
  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
    Kate,

From what I've read so far, the XT auto just doesn't offer the same level of responsiveness as the MT.

Hey, let's go test drive some XTs when Stevens Creek gets them (should be soon).

spoof of the ill fated SRT-4 clip, in which old farts like us in XTs go import hunting on the night streets of LA or something.

Not sure what's going on at the moment, but the room isn't opening up for me. Have an emergency HELP into the tech folks, so I'm hoiping we can get this one in.

do you know if is it at least more responsive than normally aspirated one?
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
You are totally wrong about NYS.

On the DMV Webpage it states (and I had a DA verify) that NY does not recognize ANY tickets from out of state (except for Ontario and Quebec)

That would be hilarious, Loosh. Talk about stealth, I mean...c'mon? Who could see that coming?

Problem is, what would you own next? Where do go from there? Buy a slower SUV, like a Porsche Cayenne S? LOL

I said it felt as quick or quicker than the Altima I tested, and that was taking it easy! I did not run her to redline.

Bottom line? I think Subaru is severely underestimating the power the XT's engine is making. I mean, do the math. C&D's last XS took 9.6 seconds IIRC. You really think 45hp could almost cut that time in half?

Let's be honest, that engine is making 240-260hp or so. The understated it to tame insurance rates.

    I love a good controversy. :-)

The 4.44:1 axle ratio probably helps a bit too! ;-)

It also explains the EPA numbers not being as good as some expected.

Usually gearing will be relaxed with a more powerful engine, they did the opposite. They could probably have sacrificed a second or so and gotten better EPA ratings.

Sorry I missed the chat -- got home late. It looks like I might not have been able to get in anyway?

Paisan: I'm not so sure about tickets. I had a red light on Staten Island that got picked up by my insurance co. I've got a Jersey license, so there must have been a cross-check there. I would expect it to go the other way too (at least with N.J./N.Y.).

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I don't believe the chat ever opened. Moderator Bob had put a call for tech support but I don't think they resolved it in time.

NJ will take tickets from other states, NY will not accept tickets from other states. So basically with a NJ lisc. you are SCREWED! hee hee. NYers are lucky except if they drive in Ontario or Quebec.

No wonder insurance there is so outrageous.

  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
Kate: I think the normally aspirated 4EAT has that intial tip-in pull over the XT, but after that the XT is more responsive.

juice: I'm starting to believe your conspiracy theory. Do you think the early production XTs all have higher output than rated, but will eventually go to the rated output when they sell in volume (I hope not)?

    Ken
  • jlemolejlemole Member Posts: 345
Hours-wise, I probably spend more time in Staten Island than in New Jersey. I should be able to have a New York license and insure my car here. Wishful thinking, though.

    Jon
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
We'll only know that down the road, Ken, if certain batches have a different set of issues. I doubt they'll dial down the power, though.

Think of how easy this engine would be to modify down the road, I mean it's a light pressure turbo, after all.

    juice,

I know -- I can't wait until Cobb comes out with an AccessECU for the XT. It's going to rock!

I'm also wondering if SOA would pull a fast one (no pun intended) and drop the 2.5T in the WRX next model year. But then again, thinking about the EPA hit...

perhaps this is a good time to revisit my NO POWERTRAIN MODS on a daily driver mantra...

ask Stephen about his opinion on it. :)

suspension? sure, just know what you're getting and if you need it. wheels & tires? you bet. exhaust, why not-- love that boxer growl.

powertrain mods I'll pass on though, thanks. buy a vehicle that has enough power in stock configuration or have something else reliable enough to drive.

Ditto the above and all the rest of that post. I used to drive tweaked cars as daily drivers, but got tired of the hassle. Now I buy a car I like "out of the box" for everyday driving, and save the tweaking for occasional use vehicles.

Finally! The hubby is ready to sell his Accord. We have to prep it now for sale, get it smogged etc.

WRX is a front-runner for the next car. But we'll check out Impreza 2.5 and Forester XT too... maybe the Outback Sport.

No more Hondas for us (sorry Pat), back to Subaru-only garage.

    Low blow, Colin. ;-)

Actually, I'm really trying to get my next vehicle as I want it out-of-the-box, instead of doing 100 customizations myself. I don't have that kind of time any more!

Shoot me an e-mail with your contact info, in case I ever get arrested... never know when I'll get pulled for 145 on the richmond parkway. Seriously though I do have a business that I'd like to convert over from an Inc. to a proprietorship so I may have some biz for yah.

Hubby tried the same black loaner WRX that you tried before, and he liked it a lot. However, I know he likes a torque off the line, so suggested he tries Impreza 2.5 as well. He prefers smaller cars, with better cornering than my Forester... but who knows maybe Forester XT or Outback Sport will be just a ticket.

What about the new Legacy Turbo coming out next year? Or is it bigger than what you are looking for?
