Bob: Sorry to hear about the accident, but that it wasn't any worse is more to be thankful for at the dinner table tomorrow.

paisan: Maybe we can come see you race when he gets older. It's a little too early for the go-cart, but I have plans to build him a Cozy Coupe WRC next summer!

Dinner before work on Thurs for me. Then I'll probably have some more with the night traders when I get to work.

PS: It'll be worth it to have 2 comp days, that means extra track days, yippie!

Good luck on the next attempt.

but I'm glad you and yours made it through OK. Metal and plastic are replaceable, not family members. Got to love that Subaru structural integrity. Now you just have more to be thankful for this holiday.

Bob: Glad y'all are OK, relatively.

Brenda: Glad your dad's OK too. Hope he continues to progress.

More snow here yesterday, total now about 15 inches, but the usual freeze/thaw cycle begins today & continues thru the weekend. Makes for lots of ice.

We're over the river, etc. to grandma's house tomorrow, but Dad's going too, so we'll be in the Suburban.

    Happy Thanksgiving, all!
Cheers! (but not too much if you're driving)

Sorry to hear about your accident Bob. Glad to know the Subies held up and you + family are doing fine.

Not a good way to start the holidays, but you have to be thankful for God giving you protection.. hence the Thanksgiving!

Hey.. it's not all about the turkey :p;)

Good idea, Ed. My 16 month old is kinda bored with his cozy coupe. I need to start customizing it, maybe chop that oversized top. :o)

Bob- Sorry to hear about your "adventure", but happy to hear everyone is okay.

Mike- It's good to get the comp time, but it stinks having to support the European market. Do they have half a day like the NY?

    To the entire Crew:

Have a Happy, and Safe (for those traveling) Thanksgiving!

Did you guys see the WRC Transformer?

Of course the U.S. gets the short end of the deal (plastic vs. die-cast), even with toys. :-)

Sorry to hear about the pile-up... brings the memory of Ford Bronco plowing into my brand-new Forester 3 years ago... Glad to hear everyone is ok!

On the way back home yesterday, hubby ran over some metal debris left on the freeway... front tire is gone and rim is slightly damaged. His WRX has only 11K mi on it.

The tire is being replaced right now. We had to go to Firestone/Bridgestone service station, as it was the only local place that had a matching Potenza RE-92. Boy, is it pricey or what. We were quoted $160 for 1 (one!) tire to be replaced.

The shop told us they cannot do anything about the rim, as it's alloy and they cannot bend or straighten it out. By their estimate, however, the damage should not affect tire mount, so they suggested we just live with it.

Hubby is bummed out. But I think he should be glad nothing worse happened.
  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
    bummer Kate :(

On the bright side :) hubby and the car is OK, and WRX wheels are dime a dozen over at the other board :)

    -Dave
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
Kate, the rim can in fact by reconditioned by experts if it's still roadworthy. don't know if it would be worth it though. pics perhaps?

and if you already bought the tire nevermind... but you can often find folks on nasioc practically giving away RE92s.

I remember the Forester accident like it was yesterday; three years??? Whoa.

If your husband's WRX is less than a year old and if he has the Subaru Gold Extended Warranty, check the fine print. There may be full coverage for a tire which can't be repaired. Thats my recollection anyway.
  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
Glad to hear you are all o.k. There is a lot of bad driving out there today. I saw a backup on I-83 north due to........a speed trap on the southbound side. Just rubbernecking. Saw a near miss too as a minivan threw out the anchors as it passed a spun p/u on the shoulder, with a Jerr Dan getting ready to haul it away. On the right shoulder, totally out of traffic, no danger at all. This minivan just jumps on the brakes, form 65 down to 40 or so. He almost got pancaked by the loaded logging truck that was following. That guy smoked every tire that truck had. Traffic was loose enough that the guy in the middle lane bailed out and the truck had someplace to go. I swear people use "caution" as an excuse for "I wanna see!!"

Oh and lastly today, at the 695/83S interchange, this 18 wheeler is merging, and a Cadillac Eldorado decides he wants to pass it first. Well fine, but then bloody well PASS the thing, you stupid stain! Big Rig had to get on the brakes and swerve onto the shoulder, spewing debris everywhere. That was the last of three cronologically. I said, "Loosh, time to get off the road. The turkey day crazies are officially out." Pointed the Legacy for home and called it a day.
  • c_hunterc_hunter Member Posts: 4,487
Dang, I could have sent you a wheel and tire -- I took them off my WRX at 3000 miles, and they're just sitting around. I'll probably end up selling the set, I guess, but may use them as spares or something. Right now, they're just eating up space in my garage.

I also have the muffler off my WRX if anybody can use it, only 3500 miles on that.

    Kate,

Sorry to hear about your husband's WRX. Debris on the freeway is scary stuff. I once saw a whole 6' step ladder laying across two lanes in rush hour traffic.

If you haven't already bought the new tire, you really should check out the Bay Area forum in the other site and just see if anyone is selling their wheel/tire combo. Also, you might want to try Discount Tire/America's Tire Store -- they usually have very good prices. I go to the one on Stevens Creek near my office.

bit - sorry to hear about the heater core, glad it's being taken care of.

Bob - glad to hear you and your family are safe.

Loosh - smart move getting off the road.

My Legacy got new shoes today "Conti ExtremeContacts"...but it took forever!.

Have a happy & safe Thanksgiving everyone.

    Jim,

I have a set of the ContiExtremeContacts on my 2001 Forester and have been very happy with them after 19K miles. A big improvement over the stock tires in every way, especially in wet and dry handling. I bought mine from Tire Rack shortly after they first came out, and they were only $66 per tire at that time.

    Len
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
You could find the tire cheaper from a wholesaler, but you may not have the time, and I'm sure you don't want that WRX on the donut for long.

See - there's another thing about having 3 cars, I was able to shop around for my Miata's tires. It really paid off, I got the tires I wanted for $50 less than the first place I checked.

The tire shop ought to know what they are doing, but my concern would be is the wheel properly balanced. If you notice any shimmy at all, I'd shop for one rim, they're under $100 from Tire Rack or even less used.

Then maybe put the damaged rim in the spare tire well, if it fits. I'm sure someone here knows if it does...anyone?

Just finished the second go around of the wife's great cooking... turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, stuffing, cranberry sauce and rolls. Once at 1 with lemon pie for desert and again just now minus the pie. Whew, too much good food.

That and a nice drive in the OBS in between has made for a great day. I hope everyone else has had as good a day.

The first part of our journey has begun. We left our home at 7am on Wednesday & arrived a noon on Thursday (1am Friday morning local HK time). I was so tired upon arrival, I almost brushed my teeth with baby Desitin by accident! We put in for the night at the Regal Airport Hotel at HK's new international airport. Last time we were here, Kai Tak in Kowloon was still in use.

Emily is in great spirits - a real world traveler. A trooper thru 'the longest day'. Last night she commented that everyone looked like her, and that her caucasian parents were the odd looking ones! Anyhow, we are off to explore. Moving to the Shangra La in Kowloon to meet up with the group, then we move inland Sunday morning, and with Gotcha Day later that afternoon.

Hope everyone enjoyed their Turkey (we didn't get any....).

Sorry to hear of the recent misadventures of Bob, Kate, etc. I only skimmed the recent posts, but will try to read them in fully when I wake up!

How wonderful for Emily to be on this journey with you. You may not have had the turkey, but you were with us in thoughts this holiday.

FWIW - my husband will never forget wehn he once accidently brushed his teeth with Desitin. We still laugh about that - 15 years later!

could always get some soysauce chicken in-lieu of turkey there ;)
My GF left HK that morning over there to make here return trip back to NY.

Good Luck and enjoy the stay :D

Got my Legacy back. Woohoo! Heuberger Subaru in CO Springs did a great job. As I posted earlier they had to pull the dash out to get at it. Replaced the core and a few O-rings along with Coolant flush and fill and AC service. 8.5 hours total.

Service rep, service manager and service tech were very nice. And of course Patti made it perfect (another big thank you!). So glad to have my Soob back

    Busy Thanksgiving for the Crew!

Bob - Glad to hear none of your family was injured.

Brenda - Thanks for keeping us posted on your Dad. Good to hear he's improving.

Steve - Have a great Gotcha Day!

I observed all the holiday crazy drivers from the comfort of my couch. I guess there was an accident near Albany Oregon that backed up traffic for 55 miles! OUCH! There were more than a few multiple car pileups on the highways around Seattle.

I got some skiing in on Wednesday. It was fabulous! I had great fun despite nursing a sore lower back that snuck up on me last weekend.

Anyway, I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

just got off the phone with a very dear friend whom I actually have not seen in 20 years, but we talk on the phone a few times a year and it's like yesterday again ... one of these days I'm going to go visit her and she's in the same 'neck of the woods' as some of you guys ... they are in Westminster, Maryland ...
Hope everyone who is traveling has a safe trip home this weekend!
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
It's exciting just reading about it, Steve. Can't wait to hear more.

Brenda: come, and we'll meet up somehow, for dinner or somethin'. That would be cool. Do you talk as fast as you type? I'll have to practice my listening skills! :-)

We just saw our friends that are adopting. They are just waiting for a referral, and expect to go to Russia to pick up their little boy in January or February. They're just as excited, it's really cool.

They're going to name him Christopher, even though they don't know who he will be. I tried to talk them into Kristopher, to no avail. Maybe he'll get the middle name David, like his dad.

I'll be the Godfather. Time to buy the pinky ring that paisan suggested. My name even ends in a vowel! Now people will have to show me respect....

Who believes in providence? I do, we were at church today, and Rita bought some meat pies, she asked me to take them out to the car, well just as I got outside an old lady was backing in beside the Titan, only she was backing straight for the Titan.

I ran, (a miracle in itself since I have not been able to do that for a long time,) I thumped her trunk and got her stopped a half inch from the drivers door on the Titan.

Now If I had not gone out when I did two things would have happened (1) the side would have been torn out of my car,and(2) I would have been in jail for assault or murder.

Her car has had lots of braille parking as it is hit on all four corners.

      Cheers Pat.

I bet Pat buys meat pies every week at church from now on. ;-)

The real question is - where they made with rally bread dough?

Well, we made it to Newport, RI!

Left at 7:15 Wed AM and got there around dinner time. We took the back way, through PA: I-70 to Rt.15 to I-81 to I-84 to Rt.34 (Conn) to I-95 to RI 138. Whew! 503.8 miles!

Met my brother-in-law and his family. We had a great Thanksgiving dinner, checked out the "Gilded Age" Newport mansions (The Breakers, etc.). My niece is actually an actor at the Astor's Beechwood mansion, hence the trip to Newport. They put on tours and she's in period custume and "improving" with other actors there. It's a fun 8 month gig for her.

Later that day, my brother-in-law, driving his Outback in Newport, got rear-ended by a Nissan pickup! Can you believe this!!! Again, a scuffed Subie bumper skin, but he front end of the Nissan was pushed in!

To top it off, my wife came down with a cold, and she has given it to all of us—or about 8 people!

Hope everyone had a less eventful Thanksgiving than we did...

    Accident update:

It turns out the driver who caused the 5-car pile up on Tuesday may (?) not have insurance! The insurance policy number she gave to the police has expired. In addition, I was talking to her (the driver who caused the accident) before I knew she was the one who caused it, and asked her who caused it. She said she didn't know. I then asked her if she had some family nearby, and she replied that they were headed to Baltimore to pickup a car because someone in her family had just been arrested. Doesn't sound encouraging...

Hope to find out something more definitive tomorrow from the insurance company. Man I wish I could erase the last 4 days or so...

  • hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
Maybe you should get loaded up on Jack Daniels instead;-)

Hope the coming week is a better one than the last, you will not forget this thanksgiving in a hurry.

      Cheers Pat.

Old Italian remedy for the hex -- pin a red ribbon (or string) inside your underwear! Sounds like you need it.

Meanwhile, I'll join Pat with a Jack Daniels in your honor.

Pat: Wy wife is Rita, too!
