hi all, Today I put a wade front 3 pc bug guard on and looks good, also a full set of vent guards
on looks good also, I think wind noise was decreased but that may be just me.
    Questions:
    1. does anyone know if a aftermarket sunroof can be installed in a dakota quad cab, Probably some problem with the raised roof lines for rack.

    2. Was told that the multispeed trans in my qc
had plastic gears in it and we qc owners are in for trouble. This guy was not a Brain surgeon by no means, but had herd this . I see no post on this. I told him it was the best shifting trans that I drove when shoppin for a new truck, beat all others hands down and that Hummers had synthetic gears in their trans and that his 305 chev prob still had the synthetic timing chain gear in it. My qc 4.7 auto 4x4 3.5

    (traumagas) I think not!!

The 45RFE transmission has many modern features not found on other xmissions. But plastic gears is not one of them.

Think about it... what benifet would plastic gears have over steel ones?? This is NOT a place to save weight.

I am researching versatile vehicle options for a full time utility vehicle and part time tow vehicle for 2 horses and a small horse trailer--total combined wt of 4500lbs. This vehicle ideally should fit in the garage, yet have the necessary muscle to rise to the occasional towing request.I have looked into the Durango, as well as the Chevy Tahoe. I love the feel and look of the Dakota qc however. Any thoughts out there, or experiences would be much appreciated.

    Thanks---lv2ride

I wanted to add that I was considering the 4.7 AT and the 3.92 axle ratio---the specs say that this should pull 5800lbs . I don't want to put any unnecessary strain on the power train. It doesn't appear that the 5.9 offers much more power as it says it will pull 6100lbs. so what do you think? 4.7 with 3.92 or 5.9 with 3.92?

(LV2RIDE) I HAVE LOOKED AT THEM ALL WAS A DIE HARD CHEVY MAN, I DROVE A FRIENDS TAHOE LAST NIGHT AND IT FELT SLUGGISH TO ME.
THE SEATS IN THE TAHOE LARGE AND HEATED WHICH FELT GOOD, BUT MY LEATHER QC ARE ALMOST AS COMFORTABLE WISH THEY WERE HEATED. INSIDE OF THE
TAHOE, THE DASH AND SWITCHES FEEL CHEAP TO ME AND THE ROAD NOISE WAS GREATER IN THE TAHOE, JUST MY OPINION. THE TAHOE WAS THE NEW BODY STYLE
AND THE OWNER HAS NO COMPLAINTS.
WISHED MY QUAD 4X4 4.7 V8 SLT HAD
    HEATED SEATS (NOT AVAIL)
WIFE WANTS VANITY LIGHTS (NOT AVAIL)
    NEEDS SUNROOF (NOT AVAIL)
    POWER SLIDING DOWNWARD REAR WINDOW
    LIKE A (SPORTTRAC)N/A

WITH ALL THAT IN MIND I STILL LOVE MY QUAD CAB
THE 4.7 ENGINE IS SO SMOOOOOOOTH
    TRANSMISSION IS SO SMOOOOOTH
DRIVE ONE AND TELL US WHAT YOU THINK!!!!

Janet, I have a 2000 QC with a 4.7, AT, 3.92, Tire / Handleing, Tow package, Trans cooler, etc and my truck is rated for 6100 #. I pull a boat/trailer that weights around 4600 # with no problem. I do not remember the exact package name for these options but I am sure someone else on this forum will jump in with the right terminology. I do definitly suggest that you go with all the option you will need to allow you to tow up to 6100 #.
    Good luck

Thanks for the responses out there, Traumagas and Carl. I will definitely try the 4.7 out (already test drove the 5.9) As it stands at this time, I'm told the dealer financing involves an interest rate of 8.59%. It would have been nice to have gotten in on a 0.9% on those 2000's. The engine/axle combination I want doesn't appear to be common however.(4.7--3.92) There is a $1000 dealer incentive at this time also. I am planning to get the truck by Spring so I'm able to shop around. I'll be frequently checking in to this site, as it's great to be able to do so much research prior to investing in a vehicle! Thanks to all of you and your input.

Janet, don't forget that you can get a $500.00 discount on any Dodge truck with more than 4 cylinders, just by joining the Farm Bureau. Dues average $50.00 to 75.00. Some states are less. You must be a member for 30 days prior to taking delivery. For information, click on this link.

I ordered a 2001 Quad Cab 4X4 SLT on 30 OCT 00. Dealer says truck will be shipped on 15 NOV. I have checked status 4 times, twice told will not be built until 1st week DEC and twice told 15 NOV but hasn't changed from D-1 since OCT. Last call was told by "Bruce" that Executive Vice President Thomas R. Marinelly sent notice that customers are not allowed to check status any longer. Does this seem like a line of bull? Any help in verifing correct build date would be appreciated. Thank You

Ordered a '01 quad cab. Has entered D-1 status, but not yet entered into production. Wanted to change the back window to rear defrost. Called the dealer to change this option. He said it would take an act of congress and that they couldn't do it. He also said the DC added some advertising costs on to the price of the truck. Im getting a little frustrated. Wanted to change the back window from flat glass to rear defrost because I found out that they do not tint the back window unless you have rear slider or defrost. The dealer didn't tell me this. Any help is greatly appreciated

Heres a suggestionthat my uncle used when buying a duelly(Spelling???) to tow his HUGE Silver Bullet camper....

    Find a dealer with a truck equipped (Engine/Drivetrain/Tire package)like you want it...4x4, T&H, 4.7/5.9, Auto/stick, 3.92, towing, etc..

Set up an appointment to "test Drive" it...

Then use your current trailoring rig to tow your trailer/horses to the dealership and when the salesman hands you the keys...Drive around and HOOK IT UP!!!! ...(Be sure to bring an X-tra 2" Draw-Bar and pin with the correct size ball!!!) and take it for a spin....I doubt a salesman wanting to make a sale will have any objections...

This idea throws another wrinkle when you are considering whether or not to buy a "DEMO" vehicle... I am a strong believer that the milage on a vehicle when you pick it up, whether its 5, 10, 100 , or 1000 miles, is the HARDEST and most NEGLECTFUL driving that the truck will ever see

I own a 2000 QC 5.9 with all the towing options avil, and pull a Haulmark Lowhauler Motorcycle trailer totaling about 4100 lbs with a weight dist kit. No problems except is drinks gas. I put a K&N flowmaster and use Mobil 1 products and saw about a 10% hp and better gas mileage. Also I have about 22,000 miles and get a humming noise from the rear end. Make sure you set your truck up with a good trailer braking system as I did not and wharped my brake rotors. Over all I love my truck and have only had to replace two relays.

    HELP!!
I am getting ready to buy a truck and I have
narrowed down to the Frontier and the Dodge Dakoda
Quad cab....can anyone help me with my decision? I

i did not drive the frontier, so i can't comnpare the two, but i can tell you why i didn't bother. if you want the availability of more options like a v8, etc. then i would suggest the dakota. another reason was the size. i can haul around my family because of the spacious interior, i can tow up to 6,100 lbs, the bed size is much larger, and the price is camparative in my opinion. also read a long ways back the others had encountered the frontier owners and the frontier owners were not impressed by the performance, ride, and mpg of their vehicle once they talked to the dakota owner.(of course nissan is calling for a had count on the revote.) 01 QC, slt, slt+, 4x4, 4.7, auto, 3.55 with 4200 miles on it. i can't imagine life without it.

While vehicle choices depend on the individual, for similar money as the Frontier, you can have an excellent V8 (4.7) and lots more room in the rear seats. I am assuming that you are looking at the cc. The 01 cc is better than the 00 in that the rear seats fold up, but the rear leg room is not much better than a club cab. My opinion:
    Towing- Quad
    Roominess-Quad
    Payload- Quad
    Bed room- CC
    Fuel Econ-CC
    Comfort- Quad
Off Road- CC (marginal and subjective)
    Looks- Quad

The cc has a reputation of being underpowered, but the new supercharged engine has made a lot of friends. It also could be more prone to problems and takes that high dollar premium. I personally do not like an engine that gets its power at such a high rpm. To me that is too much outside the normal driving range.
  • bookittybookitty Member Posts: 1,303
Brian, I came as close to buying a 2000 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab as one could without signing the
final papers. That is, until I test drove it. I only drove the 5 speed model, because that was what I intended to purchase. The first thing that I noticed was that my feet (size 12 EEE) became entangled with each other due to the close proximity of the brake and clutch pedals. The sales person who rode with me remarked that the stick had more "punch" than the automatic. That really caused me to rethink the purchase because the 5 speed model was very marginal in the power area. I was actually worried about pulling my 5X8 heavy duty (15" wheels)utility trailer that is only used on occasionally. The rear passenger area was also a bit diminutive. I liked the look and style of the Nissan but it is difficult to find exactly the options and build that you want. The sales person handed me an excerpt from a test of the Nissan taken from a magazine. It also noted the lack of power, and at the end of the article it noted that if you were concerned with the marginal power offered by the Nissan, and wanted a smaller than full sized 4 door crew cab, to consider the new Dakota Quad with its available V-8 power. Obviously, Nissan has been getting the same feedback, hence the supercharged
version now offered. It is my belief that a supercharged or blown engine is not a suitable substitute for a naturally aspirated engine designed initially to provide greater power. The cost of operation and maintenance of a "blown" engine would not suit my needs for everyday reliability (mho). I was able to customize and special order my Quad, and it is just the way I like it, with no restrictions. I am extremely happy with my Quad and have absolutely no regrets. This truck suits my every need in terms of comfort, performance and room for others. Ultimately Brian, the choice is yours. I would suggest that you take any vehicle that you are considering for a test drive. Good luck.

I have about 700k on my 2000 Dakota now and am
noticing alot of black (brake?) dust on the
wheels(rims). Can anyone tell me if this is normal?
Will it harm the finish of the wheels?
    (ie. discoloration?)

My dealer said this is normal and to just wash
them off regularly, but I have seen two vehicles,
one dakota and one durango, that have grey front
wheels and silver rear wheels. Just concerned.
    Anyone have a similar experience?

Love the truck so far.....great package.

    Thanks for the help.

  • gaquadgaquad Member Posts: 29
I have seen other posts about the brake dust.

I have not had my truck all that long but it is no worse than any other vehicle I have had that had an open style of wheel. I never had it on my 70 Impala (closed wheels) but it was always on my 94 Blazer (spoke style wheels).

I found that Simple Green does a good job and is not such a harsh cleaner. I do rinse thoroughly though.

Is there anyone out there that doesn't have the rear defrost or slider on their qc? I didn't know that if you didn't get either of these items that the back window would not be tinted. And dealer says it would take an act of congress to change, even though the vehicle is only in d-1 status. Also dealer says the original quoted price has changed do to advertising expenses. Am i getting hosed?

    James,
The rear window is tinted, it's just not the dark 'privacy' glass that you'll get with the slider. I heard from my dealer that the rear defroster is the same tint as the non-sliding window. I wouldn't sweat it unless you really wanted a defroster. You can get the window tinted aftermarket without a problem. As for the ad charges, you're not getting hosed. They're legit, and you're going to pay them. All dealers know that they're there, and when they negotiate the "xxx$ over invoice" price, they never mention it. Fact is, all the invoice information you get off the internet never includes advertising, so you walk in with a set price in mind, negotiate to pay 'xxx over invoice' and then the deal is made, little do you know that the invoice really does include about $400 worth of advertising. It's just the way it is. If you negotitate an out-the-door price and sign on it, then the dealer has an obligtion to give you that price, but if you just did the 'xxx over invoice' thing and ordered it, you're going to pay whatever the invoice is plus the agreed amount.
  • zidctlrzidctlr Member Posts: 46
The dealer did write me up a reciept saying what everything would come to with my trade. $200 over invoice - my trade allowance - rebates. He also said that if the price changed I would not be obligated to purchase the vehicle and I would get my $500 deposit back. So what should I do in this situation.
  • bookittybookitty Member Posts: 1,303
James, if the dealer actually gave you a hard and fast quote, then he cannot adjust prices upwards. In that he will give you back your deposit is a ploy because he knows that you have waited and are anxious to take delivery of the truck. Call your local consumer office and ask what they think. They will usually tell you if it is legitimate. Do not get them involved in it yet, but get their opinion. As a rule dealers do not like to get into a confrontation with these people because it gets into the local newspapers and they would need more than your advertising fee
to buy off the bad publicity that it may generate.
It depends how your agreement of sale is written. Good luck.

(crazycanuck) Some of the wheel choises on the Dak tend to show hte brake dust worse than others.
The design of the 15" X 8" wheels cast aluminum wheels tends to be the worst. I see it mostly after driving in the rain... the black stuff seems to "grow" on the wheels in the rain. In reality, the dust has built up in unseen places andis washed onto the wheels in the rain.

I beleive there is a TSB about the brake dust and a warning that it WILL damages the wheels. Your Dealer is right-on about regular cleaning. Any auto parts store will have a selection of wheel cleaning brushes.

I have considerd the new CERAMIC brake pads that claim to produce much less dust. ($$$)
  • tuvtesttuvtest Member Posts: 237
Info on these Ceramic brakes??? I haven't heard about those. I have friends who gave the carbon metallics a try and rave about them, but the ceramics are new to me.

    zidctlr,
I ordered a rear slider back in '92 on my Chev 2500. I will never have another one. They leak, whine with wind noise, and are very easy to break into. That is not just the original; it was replaced with a high-quality unit over a year ago and still whistles at speed tho it does not leak. Unless you plan to have a camper or cap and NEED to communicate with the back (toss the Bud cans?), I suggest not paying for it. My 01 Quad was ordered without the thing and I'm very pleased. I live in central Texas where it got up to 112F this summer. The Q has a great A/C unit and that tinting doesn't really do all that much for temp reduction plus the cops really hate those windows and will approach you with much more suspicion since they cannot see who/what is inside. As for the defroster, if you live in really cold climes, I suppose it is good to have but you really don't NEED that window clear anyway; you have two, large side mirrors. Be SURE to put 3in, convex spot mirrors on BOTH of these as it is so easy to miss a cycle or even a car in the blind spots without the help/security/safety those spot mirrors give you.

Good luck and happy Quading ..... 2K on mine and not a SINGLE thing needing to go back to dealer for repair/adjust.

does anyone know why dc decided to remove the redline markings on the 01 tach. the 00 did have the fade from orange to red. seems kinda of a important part of having a tach??

    Greetings,

I've been having a slow but persistent leak of transmission fluid from the tranny mated to the 4.7L V8 in my quad. Taken it in twice for reseating the pan gasket, tightening port plugs and such and by the third time the dealer infomed me that instaed of the band-aid approach they were going to install a new tranny. I'll let you all know how it performs after the surgery.
  • ohc_babyohc_baby Member Posts: 116
The real reason for a redline is so that you don't over-rev your engine (of course). DC, in all their wisdom, has rev-limited the new trucks such that you don't have to worry about it. Mine misses RIGHT at 6k rpm. The only reason you might over-rev is is you have a 5-spd and downshift into the wrong gear. Redline or no, you'd never see it coming until it was too late, so there you have it.
  • gator72gator72 Member Posts: 115
I've had my '01 QC SLT with rear sliding window for about 2 weeks; driven @ 500 miles thus far.

I've had absolutely no wind noise or whistling around the rear slider! Furthermore, it's been raining a lot here on the Gulf Coast; no leaks thus far.

As far as being secure, a thief can break ANY window on a vehicle; not just a rear slider. However, I'd bet the new rear sliders are cheaper to replace than a driver's window.

Bottom line, if you want a rear slider - get one.
  • bookittybookitty Member Posts: 1,303
Personally Bill, I would not order any truck without a rear sliding window. I enjoy the feature
and it makes for a nice airflow (quieter) when the windows are open (partially or completely). I must admit that it is somewhat awkward on the Quad
as it is practically impossible to open or close the slider from the front compartment. It was very easy on my regular cab trucks and a tad more difficult on the '95 Dakota Club cab. But Bill, like anything else it is a matter of choice. I have never experienced any air noises relegated to the slider, or leaking in rainstorms, but i'm reasonably certain that there are folks out there who have had problems with sliders. You really don't have to defend or "diss" the slider, simply have one or skip it. My dogs who rode in the cab thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. At least you and I agree.

does anyone own the sliding tonneau cover? I saw in the accesories book that it isn't waterproof, and I had my heart set on one. I'd like to know if it leaks and how much.
  • gator72gator72 Member Posts: 115
Two weeks ago, I took delivery of a '01 QC SLT+ with a FOLDING TONNEAU COVER. It is made of aluminum and steel; and locks at both ends.

There is a gap of about 1/3 inch at the front and rear edges of the cover, (tailgate and front edge of the bed behind the cab).

It's been raining here for 3 days and today I checked and found the cargo bed to be slightly damp.

I suspected the leak was coming from either the front or rear edge of the cover. So, I dried everything and affixed a marine grade weather strip under the front and rear edges of the tonneau cover; ($1.99 for a big roll at Home Depot - very easy to apply - self-adhesive). However, later this afternoon, I checked and the bed was damp AGAIN at the front edge.

All things considered, I STILL recommend the folding, locking tonneau cover because it offers excellent security for your stuff. PLUS, if you and your friends/family go on a trip, you will need a secure place to put all of the luggage.

If you're going to be traveling in wet weather, just put your luggage in those huge Rubbermaid containers from Wal-Mart; OR, do like I do - use large plastic trash bags.

Oh, well, it IS a truck; gotta expect this kind of stuff.
  • astaasta Member Posts: 122
To chip in on the above debate - I've had second thoughts about my read slider on my 01 QC since the day I took delivery. I'm wishing I had ordered the solid window with the rear defroster as I go up to the snow quite a bit and I don't think the front defrost can do the whole interior of the cab given the vent situation. My question is: has anyone out there gone back to their dealership (or another 5-star dealer with a good service department) and got a quote to see what it would cost to replace the rear slider with a solid rear defrost? Any ideas what it would run me? Not likely to be a warranty issue!!!!!

    thanks,

    Dave.

PS - still experiencing the "hunt" and lag from 1 st to 2nd gear on my auto tranny after the truck's been sitting awhile and its cold.

I have a 2000 QC and today i noticed that the cabin and the bed spacing is uneven. The right side spacing is larger than the left. Has anyone else noticed the space difference and if so what did you do about it if anything. I've had the truck since 11/4 and it's a nice truck, only complaint is the wind noise. Mounted door visor today but haven't driven the truck to notice if it makes any difference.

    01 Quad
When I have the heater selector in "feet" I still get some hot air out of the dash vents. This is very annoying as I do not want hot air on my face but do want it on my feet and legs. I've tried the combinations such as "defrost/feet" and the same thing happens. Before going to the dealer to have it checked, could anyone reply that THEIR Quad does the same? I prefer not to have the shop look into this unless necessary.

    Thanx

  • ohc_babyohc_baby Member Posts: 116
Ron, sorry man, but that isn't right. In the good old days, the vent louvers were vacuum-controlled (sucked if you ever had a leak, like my old S-10) or mechanically connected to the dial (pretty complex sometimes). Ours are computer-controlled and each louver has its own motor. Either your selector isn't telling the motor to close, or the motor is having trouble. No, this is not right and hey, it's under warrantee anyway. Sorry for the trouble, though.

Haven't been around for a while. Have had to much fun with my quad. Have read alot of posts. This is unbeleivable site. For those that don't know mine is a 2000 SLT, 4x4, 5 sp, 4.7 V8, pw,pl, power seat, T&H pkg, Mediun Bronze w/ Drift wood. Awesome truck. Soft tonneua cover, bug deflector, vent shades.
Only problem was alarm system not working and that was fixed with a new dash module. Door ajar light burned out and again a new dash module.

I have noticed people taking about waxing thier trucks. I use nothing but Meguiar's products. No swirls anywhere. I also use an electric buffer.

i have posted pic on Clubs.Yahoo.com under truck dakota.

I fortunatly have not experienced problems with trans, bed, or door alignment. This truck has also brought many comments for all kinds of people. Ford and Nissan alike. Not to mention the comments from women.
The out day a woman was walking out of the mall and she and her daughter commented on how much they liked my truck. She then got in her husbands Intense Blue Quad. I quess they had words.

Just waxed my 01 Black Sport Quad today. Wow, what a coat of wax does for the shine! I also use Meguiar's Gold Class Liquid Car wax. Easy on, easy off.

I am a bit concerned about getting swirls so I did it by hand, all in back and forth motions, no circles... The secret I found to removal was using small pieces of terry towel, turning it often to a fresh part of the towel to prevent streaking.

    I'm happy, the Quad's happy.

anyone know how to stop the odometer from registering on a 2001 quad?
  • andy_jordanandy_jordan Member Posts: 764
Are you asking how to stop mileage being recorded?

Do I really need to address that?
  • tuvtesttuvtest Member Posts: 237
From my understanding, most tire noise is more a product of tread design rather than size. The more aggressive the tread ( all terrrain vs. street) the louder it will be. The speedo/odo can be adjusted by any dealer witha quick computer flash. Mine cost $35 and about 15 minutes including paperwork. As far as the noise source, If it is the tires, it would eminate equaly from all four corners of the truck where as the rear end obviously, just from the back. If you could describe the sound, it might be easier to tell if it's a tire or diff.

ZIDCTLR- What you are asking is both illeagal and unethical and I doubt you will get any help from any of us in the Dakota Forums. I suggest you go elseware.

Don't pay attention to those guys!

James, I have been waiting a lifetime for this
question to arise. Actually, there are two methods
used to stop or prevent the odometer from
    registering miles.

1 Do not drive the vehicle, but you may transport
    it upon a flatbed.

2 Use reverse gear to go everyplace. The downside
is a very stiff neck, and some really frightened
    drivers surrounding you.

I wish that I could further help you James, but my
    technical knowledge is somewhat limited.

You're half right. Running in reverse will actully take milage off the odo resulting in negitive milage. (example: Ferris Bueller's Day Off)
Also (serious now)I think I remember you mentioning that you have large feet, Do you have a problem with scraping you foot on the connector bracket haging under the dash directly in lin with the clutch? I've already trashed a shoe on it.(bad planning?)
