My bucket 01 4x4, 5sp, bronze, taup, non-electric seat only has ONE map pocket also - behind pax seat.

Almost 2K miles on her now without a single problem. Drive over 5 mi of gravel road twice a day that for the last week is more like mud road. Great truck!

I just took delivery of my Quad (2001 w/4.7L auto) and notice oil pressure reads about 3/4 way to H. Is this normal/optimal? With all the talk of 5 qts vs 6 I'm wondering what everyone else has for a reading. Lots of good info on past posts. Thanks!
  • bpeeblesbpeebles Member Posts: 4,085
(dbquad01) Not to worry, your oil pressure is "normal". (I assume you have the 4.7L V8 hemi)
This engine has an advanced lubrication system and very close tolerances which allow a higher pressure to be maintained.

Do not forget that you WANT the oil pressure to be available at all times (TOO LOW A PRESSURE MEANS YOUR ENGINE IS IN TROUBLE!!) The pressure maintains constant oil feed to all vital parts including constant 'jets' of oil on underside of pistons and thru the 'trick' hollow camshafts. Additionally, the hydrolic lifters need oil pressure to maintain valve clearances.

The only time I have seen my oil pressure drop below this regulated pressure is at idle when the engine is VERY hot. The thinner oil under these conditions is harder to pump up to pressure at low RPMs. Even under these conditions, the pressure is within the white "safe" area of the gauge.

I am aware that this software is available, but as you mentioned, it is not for the average user. I think (hope)that it will be available for public consumption at the current rate of growth. Imagine as a option or as part of the sales literature, you get a DVD with the program for your truck that will run on your Pentium Carp or iMac. You could then chose accessories from the dealer based on a rotating 3-D image of the vehicle. Aftermarket manufacturers could give out disks that would show the product line on that program. You could even import a background picture of your driveway or favorite off-roading site.

Bruce, sounds great. Now if I could just learn how to send photos of our kitty to our kids via Email, I would rejoice.

Distributing software on CD is old stuff.

What you describe will be deliverd to a web browser near you using JAVA. (A programming language)

I know it is possible TODAY using JAVA. (I am lucky enough to make my living being involved with this stuff.) All 'they' have to do is to hire a couple JAVA programmers for a few months.

The JAVA WEB SERVER can be a 64 processor machine, you do not really need that mainframe in your basement.

Look for this technology to be available to your "average user" once the speed of the "average user's" internet connection is slightly faster....

I agree with you that with a short box truck, the effects of lowering the tailgate or a tonneau on aerodynamic efficiency is probably negligible. It is much more important to keep the structural integrity of the truck intact with the tailgate up. I remember reading an article in Sport Truck magazine many years ago where they did a similar test, but on an extended cab short box compact truck. They came to the conclusion that driving with the tailgate up, without a cap, was the best way to go.
Glad to see so many intelligent responses here - non of those rednecks saying they get 5mpg better mileage with the tailgate down!
  • andy_jordanandy_jordan Member Posts: 764
I have posted a link a couple of times to a scientific study that was carried out in a windtunnel using (I think) a Ram extended cab. If I can find the link I will post again.

They showed that a tonneau reduced wind resistance by about 8%, dropping the tailgate helped slightly (1-2%) and removing the tailgate made it worse.

Incidentally around here a lot of people have taken to dropping their tailgates for another reason. Toronto's first toll road has been open for a couple of years and rumour has it that if you drop the tailgate the cameras can't record the numberplate (they take the back of the vehicle) and hence you get free travel - no idea whether it's true, but a lot of people do it.
  • wetwilliewetwillie Member Posts: 129
No one is suggesting ya run around with your tailgate down! The wind tunnel testing (the link andy jordan is referring to and that I posted a few days ago) is for reference only! The facts are the facts - click on the configuration for a picture of the air flow - it might become more clear.

i have a 01 q/c. it has a power outlet in the box between the seats (buckets) and a spot for an additional one under the dash with a plasic cover just below the a/c vent nearest the shifter(auto).is this correct or did the factory forget something? truck has every opt possible.
  • tuvtesttuvtest Member Posts: 237
I have two as well. I belive that's all we get.
  • slickwilliedjslickwilliedj Member Posts: 252
what i mean by a cover under the dash is there is no outlet just a cap to cover the hole in the dash where one would go. thus ,i have only 1 in the box between the seats.

If you get the buckets seats w/console, they move the outlet to the console. On the bench seats it is on the dash.

Just wondered if anyone could share their experience in this. Now I haul 3 on-road/off road bikes on trailer, but would prefer one less registration fee, shorter on-load/off-loading time, higher speed limit, and reduced need for parking space, etc. as advantages of QC vs trailer. Thanks in advance.

    slick,

I have leather buckets in my 01 QC Sport Plus 4x4 and the center console. I have one power outlet in the console, one under the dash (just below the 4WD selector) and the cigarette lighter outlet in the ashtray. I don't recall the extra outlet being an option but maybe it comes with one of the convenience packages???

Last week, I got my '01 QC with buckets/console. I have a power outlet in the dash AND one in the console (under front edge). I also have a cigarette lighter in the ashtray. According to the literature, you are supposed to have TWO POWER OUTLETS with bucket seats/center console models. Consult the dealer.

traumagas, I posted a message yesterday on the "Dodge Dakota Owners - Meet Your Members" forum yesterday describing how I got my 2001 Quad Cab for $1841 under invoice.

I won't repost the whole message here, but here's my attempt at a direct link:

    http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/engaged/edmund.cgi?a=r&c=Clubs&t=28

    Good luck on your purchase!

Last week, I got my '01 QC SLT+ 4.7 w/automatic tranny. I love it. It drives great and mileage is not too bad; considering it's brand new.

The only "problem" I've noticed so far is that when I remove the key, the steering wheel won't lock. The owner's manual said it should. I've tried rotating the wheel to get the lock to engage - NOTHING. Has this happened to anyone else?

I guess I can start a "To-Do" List. But, so far, the unlockable wheel will be the only item on it. Not too bad.
  • skylerkskylerk Member Posts: 67
I just realized that I didn't make this clear in my other posts:

The 40-page information package that I bought from http://www.fightingchance.com included a complete "factory price list" for all the different Quad Cab base models and options. It exactly matched what one of the dealers had faxed to me. They also include good-to-know facts like current year sales trends and if any factory-to-dealer hidden incentives exist on the vehicle you're interested in.

Recently I have noticed an engine stumble and rough idle every once in awhile. The truck has 12,000 miles on it.Usually after slowing down from about 50 and stopping at a light. Also when moving slowly when in bumper to bumper traffic. The dealer told me nothing was wrong that is how they idle. Of course I could not get the truck to stumble for the mechanic during the test drive. Any help would be appreciated

I have been a faithful reader since my little green quad was born in March.
you guys never fail to amaze me on what different discourses you'll be talking.bottom line,I've learned some stuff and had some good laughs too.
My quad goes into the body shop for a new headliner .the original was ripped from the factory...otherwise I am happy with my purchase.
    keep it coming guys!

John, if you will not be getting your truck in the next 30 days and do not live in OK or HI, you can join the Farm Bureau (www.fb.com) and receive an additional $500.00 discount regardless of the deal you got. This discount comes from joining the Farm Bureau where a one year membership costs usually $35.00-75.00. You must be a member for thirty days prior to delivery. You don't reveal this one until settlement. skylerk did a great job of negotiating a low price. Especially handy if you have a few dealers around to compete against each other. You should be able to purchase a truck for invoice or a few bucks over, less the D/C rebate and the Farm Bureau if applicable.

    Thanks, for the info
I have located the truck with all my options wanted, Invoice 26,100
    rebate -1000
    total 25,100
    dest + 570
    total=25,670

    I don't know If i can wait 30 days to save 500
sounds insane I know, but needing truck for the last 2 years.
  • bookittybookitty Member Posts: 1,303
John, if you do not care to wait, after the deal is firm, inquire of the dealer if he will work with you concerning the Farm Bureau discount. He only has to fill out the coupon with a VIN and delivery date. Can't hurt to ask.

Sorry for the delay and the misunderstanding. Now you got me worried, I just went out to my rig to check, whew ,OK I've got 1 in the dash (never really checked, just assumed there was a outlet behind the cap) 1 in the console and 1 in the ashtray. sounds like your's is a FFU (Factory **** Up). Time to call the parts guy.
  • sorcerersorcerer Member Posts: 28
I too have the leather buckets & center console, and I have 2 power outlets, and a lighter.
  • steve234steve234 Member Posts: 460
Since I don't have the bucket, I assumed that they just moved it to the console. Apologies. The shock of finding that people can actually vote for Gore or Hillary without a major cash donation has me in shock. Makes me think of immigrating to Australia.

I was told three times by Lori at meltonsales in OK that they have been accepting the FB discount since October. She also told me on two separate occasions that my order to the factory was price protected as far as the Dodge rebate is concerned. Means that as long as I order before 1/08/01, I can take advantage of it. Or, take advantage of a rebate that is being offered at that time - my choice. Hope she is right; I am getting ready to do it.
  • ford_biiford_bii Member Posts: 120
As far as I know any applicable rebates are determined at the time you take delivery. You will get what is current when you receive the truck. Don't believe Lori, unless you get it in writing...
  • slickwilliedjslickwilliedj Member Posts: 252
i guess mine is one of a kind, i will have dealer look into ordering a pwr outlet for the dash next service. i wonder how the factory could over look something like that??.... don't have any use for more then one or two but if its supposed to be there and i payed for it i want it!
  • tuvtesttuvtest Member Posts: 237
well, as a avid musclecar restorer, I would say keep your truck the way it came from the factory, in 30 years, it'll be worth more. But realisticly your dealer should be fixing it. Just for kicks, do you know what day your truck was built on? Just want to see if it's one of those infamous Monday/Friday car things.
  • bpeeblesbpeebles Member Posts: 4,085
(erickson5) Your dealer is correct! This is very well known problem and it WILL subside once the PCM 'learns' how to idle with more variables involved. The 4.7L has a nasty idle glitch while the vehicle is rolling. Ill bet when you come to a dead-stop, the Idle smooths right out.

Please review the early Dakota forums for this subject.

    Good news!
As my Dak saw more miles... the MPG went up and the idle 'hunting' has subsided.
  • livnlrnlivnlrn Member Posts: 76
I have hauled my KX 125 and a RM 250 in my bed no problem. I read an article (can't recall where) that stated they hauled 3 dirtbikes in their Quad.
They said that it worked with all of them facing forward but was easier with 2 forward 1 reverse. I have also hauled my Harley Sportster. Of course the tailgate had to be down in all instances.
  • traumagastraumagas Member Posts: 64
Hi all I picked up my quad today loaded with everything but the kitchen sink white/silver
the price was close to (skylerks) 1800 under invoice.
I cant tell you how good this posts and edumonds multi articles on car buying worked. Saved my family $$$$. Love this truck never thought I would buy a Dodge. But being 39 I grew up around
dodges of the 70s and they were less then impressive to say the least. Kind of like gettin sick on a food and then not trying it ever again.
But the first 200 miles have been great, rides tight and smooth. chevy and ford should wake up, but who cares when you have a dodge dakota.

See my original post # 941. I discovered soon after I bought my truck that my steering wheel didn't lock when in the center position. When I take my truck down for it's first oil change I'll let them know about it.

    ---stnic---
You wrote some time ago about a rear end howl on your truck. I know the dealership wanted you to wait until you hit 5K, has anything changed? My rearend howl only happens when I'm coasting between 40 and 50 mph. As soon as I give it a little gas, the sound goes away. It's a little different then your problem but it could be realted.

Just brought a new 2000 Dodge Dakota Quad (with
0.9% interest) and I noticed that it seems to have
alot of wind noise (on the highway). Maybe it's
just me, I went from a 99 Honda Accord to this
truck. I really like the truck but the noise is
driving me crazy. I was wondering if anybody else
is having this problem or is it normal for trucks
to be so load inside. I onced owned a new Nissan XE PU and it was alot quietier than this truck.
  • steve234steve234 Member Posts: 460
Take another Dakota for a test drive and compare the noise. If there is a major difference, get the dealer to fix the problem. Sometimes a poorly installed windshield can cause increased wind noise. More than likely, you are used to the lack of wind noise with the accord. There is no way a pickup the size of the Dakota will be as quiet as a small car because of the amount of air that has to be dislocated going down the road. You have twice the frontal area and three times the clearance.
  • raider41005raider41005 Member Posts: 9
I had the same problem with my 2000 5.9. This is caused by the rear end gears. My dealer first attempted adjusting them with no help (shimming the ring & pinion to get the correct gap). They replaced the ring & pinion gears which fixed the problem. They said they have had this problem on a couple of other Dakotas. The noise will not go away with added milage, it will likely get worse. Let me know if you need further info.

    livnlrn,
Thanks for your response. It must have been fun loading that Harley! Please let me know if you get any updates on m/cy hauling in QC. In meantime, I'll be trailering DOT-knobby-equipped XLR 250, Serow-225, and RT180 (Mojave Desert for Thanksgiving--legal trails, of course!)
  • nthdgreeenthdgreee Member Posts: 24
Thanks for the response "raider". I've heard a couple of times now that it has something to do with the ring and pinion gears. Hopefully that's what my dealership will look at first. Either way, I'm going to tell them before I drop it off that that's where the problem seems to be coming from.

I wonder if there is a service bulletin on this.

raider41005, i would appreciate some more info about the problem you experienced with noise. I did test drive a 2001 Dakota and it wasn't making all that noise like the 2000 i just brought.
  • jhayescarjhayescar Member Posts: 6
Just spoke to my car dealership service dept and they said that there is a recall on certain Dodge Trucks Ring and Pinion Gears. Now all we have to do is find out if our trucks are part of that recall. Anybody have any info on how to find out from Dodge? I'm assuming that the service dept should have some sort of list but in case they don't any suggestions?

Jon, congratulations and good luck with your Dakota. Glad you were able to use the resources here to save money on your deal. Now you can blow it somewhere else like the rest of us. Enjoy!

I get a strange sound from my radio when ever it
rains. It sometimes continues even after shuting
off the radio and engine.Has anyone else experienced this?
  • gator72gator72 Member Posts: 115
I've had my 01 QC SLT+ 4.7 for about a week. Runs & drives great. Quality, fit and finish are excellent. No unusual wind noise. Some CD's skip; but, told that's normal. Dealer said that you must turn steering wheel 3/4 turn to get it to lock. We checked out 2 other 01 QC's on the lot - same thing. (Not too worried because I have factory installed Engine Immobilizer). This is not a complaint, BUT, I wish there were coat hooks in rear cabin.

The following is a list of "must have" Mopar accessories purchased so far; (expensive, but worth it):

    1. Folding Tonneau cover: secure; easily removed
    2. Rubber bed mat: better than a bedliner.
    3. Deep Rubber "slosh" floor mats: these should be standard! Forget about the carpeted mats!
    4. Rear splash guards: gotta have'em.
    5. Ventvisors: a "must-have" in this southern climate. (High humidity year-round).

I agree with traumagas, EDMUND's is a great source for info. and money saving tips. Since there are not too many QC owner's in my area, it is great to know I can log on here and find other great minds. THANKS EDMUNDS!

I have about 6200 on my 00 4x4 QC 4.7L auto, 3.55 lsd. Yes I have a definate howl from about 50 to 58 mph or so, light throttle only. Step on it or get off gas and it's barely noticeable. My dealer wanted to wait a little longer so DC wouldn't question replacing ring and pinion, which I'm sure will need to be done as its not getting any better. Other than that though the truck has been great. Much colder weather here now,and no idle or driveability problems as yet. Hope this helps. Stnick.

    Davids1,
You are correct, but also very incorrect.

Scientifically speaking, yes, you are very correct. A skidding tire should not be able to stop quicker than a tires held at their threshold. However, you fail to understand that ABS does not do this. At least not efficiently.
I don't have to time, nor patience to go into the physical aspects behind ABS. You should research that yourself since you profess yourself such a scholar.
This argument has more to do with engineering than basic scienceand you need to understand how ABS truly works before you start attacking people on their comments and/or opinions.

After you do that type of research (by the way, I already have) than, please, write back and state what you feel to be more correct than everybody else posting here.

You might be surprised what you find out.

    Again, scientifically you correct.
Mechanically, you seem to have no clue.

Numbers don't lie when brought to raw testing and science is not considered. Fact is, ABS has not the stopping power (distance speaking) of typical brakes. Wet or dry.

However, as I said before, is it a Godsend for people who are not comfortable pumping the brakes or using other techniques to maintain the ability to steer. It is a perfect safety feature for such people and I think that people in warmer climates would do well equiping their vehicles with ABS since they are not exposed to such braking techniques on a regular basis.

Would I want most people on the raod to have ABS?... Probably.

    Is it for everybody?... No

Is it for me?... Absolutely not
  • nthdgreeenthdgreee Member Posts: 24
Thanks for the reply stnick. My dealer will probably recommend the same thing (waiting for several thousand miles)unless there is indeed some kind of service bulletin on it.

I only have about 1600 miles on my truck so far. No other problems. I'm still waiting for our first good snow out here in CO so I can try out the four wheel drive.
