Referring to your 1742 and 1761 postings. Very much like what I saw in your pictures of the PE Bedrug in your QC. Does Pace Edwards have a Web site? Would like to have additional info on PE and how to contact them.
Also, does the Bedrug provide for a 2x4 or 2x6 in the rug impressions? Is it under the rail 100%? What is the attachment method? Any help would be appreciated!

there are four holes that are capped in my 2001 quad. When I take the caps off is see straight through to the ground. What are these for? I want to get a rhino, but am curious about spraying over them.
  • steve234steve234 Member Posts: 460
I think that the tranny with the 4.7 has four gears, 1st, 2nd 3rd and OD. Technically there is a fifth gear, its that alternate 2nd gear.

I had the BOB opened on my desk as I made that append. I was paraphrasing right from its pages.
I am only as sure as the BOB.

Have you ever had 4 feet of snow in the bed of your truck? where do you think the water goes when it melts? Those are water-drain holes and should NOT be plugged permininently.
  • ohc_babyohc_baby Member Posts: 116
The two holes that are behind the bed are cargo hardpoints, and the two that are just to the driver's side in the same corrugation are for assembly tooling. There are also three smaller holes in the leading edge of the bed that are for drainage. Definitely tape over the four holes if you spray a bedliner. The spray material fills them in a little anyway, and the plastic caps will not fit afterward.

To answer yor questions, yes they have a web site as posted by earl1z19 post #1855. They also have a dealer referral program where they will send your inquiry to the nearest dealer, of which I am one, in Nebraska. The rug is attached with VERY agressive Velcro. It is under rail type fit. It does infact have 2x6 molded pockets built in. It is custom made for your truck, and that was one of the things I liked about it. Also that it lays perfectly flat on the bed floor, made with rails to match box floor. Hope this helps, Stnick

Chuck, on my 00 4.7L auto 3.55 lsd, since colder weather I wondered what tranny was doing, now after a couple of cold months, I'm pretty sure that the TC won't lock up until engine temp about reaches normal, usually about 3 to 4 miles when 40 degrees or below. My rpm at 60mph when in OD and TC locked is about 1800 rpm. With TC unlocked it's about 2300 rpm, and when OD locked out, about 26 or 2700 rpm. When it was below zero here, a couple of times the OD didn't engage or the TC for almost 10 miles. All normal according to dealer. Regards, Stnick.

    STNICK,
Can you tell me what a bed rug goes for for a QC? Is there a way to get one for less than the $400.00 I have seen advertised?
Is this thing as duradle as they say and have you used one yourself?
  • egaquamanegaquaman Member Posts: 19
A month ago, I installed a pace edwards roll top and a bedrug in my 01 QC. I use my truck for hauling water coolers, tools, etc. So far, the bedrug has been very durable (one seam is separating though and the dealer says it can be fixed). The roll top cover leaks a little bit near the tailgate and the lock freezes when it is cold and wet (other than that...YeeHah). Unfortunately, when the rolltop is combined with the bedrug, it seems that the gate doesn't close quite as easily as it should. Maybe this is a fit problem? I live in Toronto and paid $422 CDN (about $280 US)

I have another question for the group. Does anyone have any experience using a Stage II Jet Performance Chip on the 5.9L engine (or even the 4.7L)? Also, has anyone installed a Gibson Exhaust system on their QC (particularly the "Swept Side" version)? I'd be interested in hearing any feedback on the relative performance gains, if any, that these products really provided, and any good or bad experiences anyone has had with same. I'm leaning on trying the Stage II chip first which is supposed to add another 18hp according to Jet Performance b/c it is cheaper than installing the exhaust. Also, I don't want to install something that is going to be too loud inside the cab. The feedback I've gotten from exhaust dealers is that the Gibson system is quieter than the Flowmaster system. Again, any feedback would be much appreciated.

Finally was able to get out today and see if the center seat of the 2001 QC can easily come out and put in the factory console. Yes, it'll work quite easily. All three seats are independent of each other. Will require some unbolting of the center seat off the tracks of the other seats. Then the console will bolt right in its place. Now I have to see how much the console costs from the dealer.

I just got done reading my latest issue of motor trend feb00.top 10 tough truck test for 2001 truck of the year and the Dakota wasnot invited. why? i don't know and have e mailed motor trend a letter asking why? but no response yet. in summary the nissan crew, ford sport trac, new chevy s10 crew(avail overseas for 4yrs) and the toyota double cab were the 4dr offerings tested, among others from the full size category. so comparing apples to apples, 4dr compact/midsize to the dakota q/c one would find the dakota q/c beats them all hands down and even a couple of the full size models tested.the last time the dakota was tested by mt was jan 00(1st yr offering)and jun00 in truck trend against the full size f150 crew cab. why they tested the dakota against a full size truck i can't understand since the dakota and f150 are in 2 different classes of truck compact/mid vs full size.if any of you feel the dakota got the shaft on both of these test and also feel mt needs to test it against other 4dr compact/mids in its same class or by it self in a full road test... pls email motor trend at www.motortrend.com. and let them know!

I just picked up my 2001 QC 4X4 yesterday. During my inspection, I had noticed strange baseball sized blotches in the paint (bright silver) at 8 different locations on the doors, both sides. They kind of resemble a wet sand mark that was missed with the buffer, but the paint does not appear dull at the spot where it occurs. Dealer contacted DC and informed me that they new what the problem is and requires the attention of heat lamps. Paint curing issues. I'm skeptical. Also noticed a whine in the drive train between 40 and 50mph when I let off the accelerator and coast. Has anyone experienced this with their vehicle or is it just a normal condition of the transfer case. This is my first 4X4 so I am not sure of the idiosyncricies of the drive train. Any opinions or observations of either issue would be appreciated. Other than that I really like the truck.

Motor trend only tests new or substantially new trucks for the Truck of the Year. The Quad Cab was included last year.
  • scottieeckscottieeck Member Posts: 69
I am torn over this issue. if MT is going to compare apples to peaches, then it will be difficult to take them seriously. However, the article clearly states,"Truck of the year". If they decided that the 2002 Peterbilt over-cab semi had the best new design and/or features, I would be disappointed, but I don't know if I would be able to say that they were "wrong". however the nissan at least is not a really new model (new fender flares, front bumper, etc.) I have noticed that the Dakota quad seems to be the "disfavored" truck of the auto world.
P.S. what are we supposed to believe when they devote the majority of their print to vehicles that people who don't own software companies can only fantasize about?
BTW, slickwilliedj, how the heck did you ever get Augustus Gloob out of the pipes at your factory??

On the price of the bedrug, there is a suggested list price, but ofcoarse it is up to the dealer to sell at what price he wants to. We have priced ours at 349.00 in our area, its possible you might find it for less farther from home, but then you would have to pay frieght. My rug has not had much hard use such as egaquaman has used his, but it fits good and seems very durable. I definitly wouldn't get one if hauling dirt, sand etc. Stnick

Hey everyone, I am new here..but I have a 2001 Quad Cab that the winshield wiper fluid sensor comes on and off every so often on the dash. Anyone have this happen or heard of it?

The headlights have stayed on after turning the headlight switch to the off position.
After a recycle of the headlight switch, the headlights turned off.
This has happened two times so far.

Has this happened to anyone else?
  • mulderigmulderig Member Posts: 31
I have an 01 QC SLT and the headlights stay on for 60 seconds if you turn off the ignition first and then the headlights. If you turn off the headlights before the ignition they should not stay on.
  • bobs5bobs5 Member Posts: 557
Thank you for the explanation of the headlight function.

I will keep an eye out to see if this is what happened to me.

Hi everyone. Thanks for all the info you've been posting. I've been reading for several months and just ordered a 01 qc 4x2 4.7 5spd lsd sport plus with hd svc and t&h. Had a great purchase experience -- invoice + 200. Then deducted the FB rebate. Probably wouldn't have heard about that if y'all hadn't posted it. Now all I've gotta do is wait for the new toy.

egaquaman, could you please help out a fellow Canuck and contact me privately regarding the purchase of your Bedrug. I'm considering purchasing one and would like to talk to you about where you purchased yours. browng@region.halton.on.ca Thanks.

Ritzoid, bargain harder !...I just ordered my 4x2 QC SLT+ Leather, 4.7 auto, etc. for 400 under invoice. Add in the farm bureau discount and I'm in at 900 UNDER invoice (includes the rebate). I used CARSDIRECT price as a fallback and bargaining chip. Good luck.

I don't like the sounds of your paint problem. It has been 1-3 weeks since it was painted and no one fixed it before you saw it? I would make sure they make it right before you sign anything.

The rear end wine - I have a slight wine under the same conditions. I'm use to it, and I kind of like it now. It is another audio sensor on how the truck is responding. My 2 1/2 cents worth.
  • slickwilliedjslickwilliedj Member Posts: 252
article clearly states in order to play in the sand box all trucks must be on sale by jan01. well the dakota has been on sale since 00 yes i undertand its 01 truck of the year however, the nissan is not new for 01 only it super charged engine and new facia, mazda b4000 whats new here the 4.0 has been offered for years and the platform is as old as the ranger, s10 new to the use but its been built in other countries for nearly 4 yrs! so motor trend's" must be all new for 01" is b/s! the dakota was just overlooked but thats fine we all know the q/c is king of the crews in its class at least!

Well after only owning my 2001 Garnett Red Quad, I already made an ouchie.
I was pulling into my garage after a long night shift, and the flaired back left fender scrapped the side of the entrance to my garage!
The fender now has a white paint streak all along it. I tried using some clear coat paint remover, but it didnt do much!
I guess my options are to buy and replace the fender myself? Anyone know any products that might help? Thanks!!

I also compared price, performance, and sound of most of

the aftermarket exhaust companies (all through word

    of mouth and web searches).

    My Opininion:

Best "bang-for-your buck" is the Gibson Side Swept cat back.

I have it on my truck, and the difference between it and the stock

exhaust interior sound was basically negligable.

    (But outside it sounds great)

I also now have Quick-D intake and Bosch 4417s.

I don't expect to put my truck on a dyno anytime soon, but I

can definately say that it now has MUCH MORE OOMPH than stock . .

If you want a plethora of information on Dakotas and Mods, go to

the Dakota Mailing List (DML) archives:

    http://www.dakota-truck.net/archives.htm

DML also has a huge amount of information on Jet Chips . . .

it appears to me that the consensus is that they are great for the

5.2 & 5.9, but that you shouldn't waste your money on it for the 4.7.

Thanks for your input. Too late, the paper work is done. I will just make the salemans life a living hell until I am satisfied. The blemishes are hard to see. The side of the truck has to be turned into the sun to see. I just spoke to the dealer and the saleman said a part needed to be ordered in regards to the whine. What part? He did not know. Typical salesman. Also the truck went to the bodyshop to go under the lamps. I will get it back tommorrow. I just hope they do not need to repaint. Matching that bright silver paint even with factory code I think would be a difficult task. By the way, I have the 4.7L with manual trans.. Is this your setup?
  • peb2peb2 Member Posts: 12
I noticed you also have the bright silver clearcoat color on your QC. Check post #1868. Did you have anything that resembles this in your paint?

Does anyone know how long it takes to BUILD a vehicle?? I called DC today to
check on my Dakota order which was placed on 1/22/01. The guy said it was in a Gateline status and the shipping date was the 9th...TOMORROW?? I didnt think a vehicle could
be built and shipped in a day. I was calling from work so I didnt question him further.
What exactly is a gateline status??

    Thanks

Towing an aluminum 14 ft. boat during season.(@once a week) Have 3 children and a mini van to boot... Is this truck practicle enough for me???(Very broad question)I used to have Full size Blazer 5.7..Loved it,,but not the mpg...I travel @ 15 miles to work(1 way) At 75% hiway,25% city...All suggestions would be SOOOOOOOO Appreciative...I am really concerned with reliability and Fuel efficiency...(Arent we all) Thanx All,,enjoy

I ordered my QC on January 22nd also. I was given a ship date yesterday of 14 February, so you are doing a lot better than me. All the manufacturers have streamlined their order delivery process, my last car took 10 weeks. At this rate my QC will be ready before my 30 day Farm Bureau requirement is met, a good problem to have. If it comes in early, I'm going to try and finesse the dealer into giving me the truck with a promise to return with the FB paper work.

BTW - thanks to everyone who filled me in on how to get the FB discount. It was just $20 to join.

Michael, most of us on the forum and in the Owner's Club are very pleased with our Dakota trucks (regular, club & quad cab configurations). As far as towing a 14' boat with the 4.7/3.55 combination (5 speed), no problem! You can practically tow a 14' aluminum behind a bicycle or even a Nissan Crew Cab (sorry, I could not resist that one). As far as meeting your family's needs, only you can be the judge of that. I love my Dakota quad, and it does everything I need to do. I would suggest that you get the factory tow package, even though you will not be pulling a heavy load. It is safer, more convenient, offers HD options and does not incur warranty issues. I don't use my truck to drive to work, and most of the time I drive highway (but not limited access) to our New Jersy beach house. I average around 18 MPG on mixed driving with highway speeds of 60 MPH
and some traffic, but no heavy traffic such as city driving. I think that you will be pleased with a Dakota, but then it must meet your specifications, and I don't know what they are.

Go to your local automotive supply store and get a bottle of SCRATCHOUT. It's safe for clearcoat and plastic. It pours out like liquid wax. You might have to rub the spot a little, but, it should come out nicely. HOWEVER, if there are gouges in the plastic nothing will get THAT out.
When finished, cover the spot with a good carnuba wax (for clearcoat).

    Hope this helps

According to Dodge customer service it takes 3-5 days to complete a vehicle. I ordered mine on Dec. 19th. Took Delivery on Feb. 2. What a truck!!
  • fvracerfvracer Member Posts: 13
TD, try this URL - www.dakota-truck.net/ One of the pages is on tracking your order and it gives the codes and meaning. From this it seems that Gateline status means that your truck is scheduled to be built Feb 9th, not shipped.

I have a 2000 Quad. 4x4, 4.7, automatic, 3.55 gears. Going by the computer I average just above 12 mpg in town. I drove on the interstate 170 miles and averaged 15.6 mpg at 70 mph. Return trip (170 miles) with cruise on at 70 mph I averaged 12.6 mpg. I only have 4800 mile on the truck but I think these #as are low. What do I tell my dealer when I go in to complain?

I don't think the emergency lightbar is causeing that much drag. check it out:

    That is exactly what happened.
The headlights stay on if ignition is turned off before headlights are.

I searched the owners manual for this information but did not see it.
Is this info in the owners manual?

    Welcome to the Dakota board.

My commute to work is 13 miles one way.
Mostly back roads, various speed limits, and about 2 miles of highway.
    I average about 16 MPG.
See my profile for truck configuration.

Are you getting 4x2 or 4x4?

If you have any more questions, please feel free to post here, as the fellow participants are extremely helpful and knowledgeable.

My dealer called yesterday to tell me my QC, 4x4, SLT-plus, 4.7/auto/3.55/lsd + most options was in. I used the Chrysler friends program (invoice minus 2% plus $20)and the $1000 rebate. I odered it on 1/3. It was built on 1/25. Not a bad wait to get a truck exactly the way you want it. This board helped decide on the QC over the Silverado and Supercrew.
    Thanks.

Sorry to sound dumb, but what are the Bosch 4417's. Bosch makes such a wide variety of products.
  • bookittybookitty Member Posts: 1,303
Eric, your mileage does indeed sound very poor. Did you observe your RPM, and was it holding fairly steady under cruise control conditions. Also, when checking mileage it is good practice to both go by the overhead computer as well as checking the actual gasoline consumption and gallonage against the computer reading. My particular computer is "on the money" versus the mathematical calculations of elapsed miles being divided by the gallons taken at fill ups. Others have claimed a disparity between the two methods. If after confirming using the mathematical method of calculating, the mileage returns are that poor, it would be time to involve the dealer. Keep good records of fuel purchases, miles traveled and general driving conditions (speed, cruise, highway, road conditions, temperature, etc.).

Truck came back from body shop. Blotches are still present(post #1868). Dealer is scratching his head (among other things) and probably worried about how much hell I am going to raise. What are the chances of refusing truck after papers are signed after dealer assured me it was a paint cure problem and was fixable. (really kicking myself now) The last thing I want is to own a 3 day old truck that requires a complete paint job!! Any other ideas to this problem, I sure could use some.
