Hi, Rhys, installation was not bad, as the mopar kit comes with everything you need. Kit says to cut out your light holes with a 4" hole saw. I didn't have one but I did have a narrow curved wood carving tool which worked fine. The plastic is quite soft. The lights come with brackets that bolt right up to holes behind valance. You get wiring harness, and a complete new light switch to replace yours. For me,install went well, instructions are pretty clear. Depends on if your comfortable doing that type of thing.
Oh, Asta, you should try to look at the roll top to see if it is for you. Havn't had mine long enough to know how it holds up, but it seems sturdy. It is aluminum with a black vinyl covering bonded on top. Go check one out, that would be best. Later..

lmeyer1 - The Radio I put in my quad is a Aiwa CDC-MP3. I paid around $299 from Crutchfield and I love it! It plays regular and rewritable CD's and best of all it plays MP3's. Its nice to be able to put 6-7 hours worth of music on a CD and just hit random play. The adapter for the 98-up Intrepid worked great in the truck (2001 model). Best of all the radio mounts flush and makes for a very professional installation. Shoot, even I made it look good! I'll post some pics in the photo section when I can.

96g11 what size pipe did you use on the removal of the factory ram air and how did you do it? I saw where you mentioned it in #353 but couldn't find where you explained what you did later on. I have the 4.7 auto and I am thinking about taking the factory ram air off and putting something like you were talking about on in it's place.

BK (bookitty) - you rock! that info is incredibly helpful. Further confirmation that this Dak Owner's board is far and away the best board on Edmunds if not the entire web. Hate to compare it other boards of other vehicles (Ford Supercrew) but this board has solid folks with solid character who stick around after the purchase to help others. Other boards on Edmund (Ford Supercew) can't quite boast of that record. And another thing - I have seen more posts on this board of people saying they were not only helped but influenced to purchase by the info presented on this owner's board. Let's see Al or George W. make that claim in November!

Okay, campaign speech is over. Time to go find that VON number and get busy...

Thanks. You also beat me to the punch. I was going to ask how well the dash kit from the 98 Intrepid worked. Good to hear that it fits nicely. Sounds like a deck worth checking out. (I'm going after-market for the stereo, too.)

Nice to meet you all. I've been reading this board for a few weeks and finally posted. I just got D-1 status on my 2001 QC. I'm trading my '99 Durango for it because I just bought a house. Mulch doesn't go well with the leather interior of the Durango. I basically got the same thing as my fully loaded Durango, but with the 4.7L (Durango has 5.9L) and with cloth (The Durango leather is hot in summer and cold in winter). Just my personal opinion, of course. The QC seemed like the perfect combination of Durango and Pick-up.

I'm excited about the new interior design (I hope) and to do some tailgating for Penn State Football!

Again nice to meet everyone. Everything I've read so far has been very informative and always helpful.

I will assume you are talking about the stock airbox supply pipe when you say factory ram air. If I am wrong please correct me. I used standard 4" aluminum dryer ducting (flexible acordian type). This material is easily manipulated and shaped. I just removed the black rubber mat from the passenger side radiator support and ran about 18" of the ducting from that area to the intake of the stock airbox. I moved the computer a coupple of inched to the left and "manipulated the a/c line just a little. The 4" ducting fits well into the opening of the airbox and can be molded into a tight fit. The aluminum ducting can be smoothed by hand to remove the ridges somewhat and improve airflow a little better put this is probably overkill.
Just remember with this thpe of setup you should install a K&N type washable air filter and clean / reoil it at oil changes.

Transmission care for the Dakota has been mentioned before, but could the respected QC owners impart wisdom here again… I have a 4.7, auto 3.92, SLT+, T&H, Forrest green/driftwood, agate and greige interior, all the toys except cassette with the CD, extang snapless soft cover and a few other appearance goodies. Body straight, engine smooooooth and solid. Had remaining windows tinted and get LOTS of compliments. I have been doing my own oil changes MOBILE 1 oil and filter. 9600 miles on her and NO problems!!! However I have no transmission experience, but have heard the tranny in the QC requires special attention and fluids to keep it happy. PLEASE repost which fluid I need to use, how often etc…
Oh yeah, if anyone has fabricated a "drip pan" for the A/C to keep it from making condensation music on the exhaust please let me know, since I plan on working on my own shortly.. I think some creatively shaped aluminum and tubing should work…

    Thanks fellow quaders !

In the "For what it's worth" catagory...

I have an 01 Quad Cab, 4X4, 4.7, Auto and my A/C doesn't drip on the exhaust. It seems to clear it quite easily so maybe a change was made on the 01?

Maybe it's an issue with different engines?

  • rhyswfrhyswf Member Posts: 16
My 01 Quad 4.7 Auto A/C unit also drips on exhaust. So I don't think its limited to 00 Quads. I wonder if many others have this experience.

    Thanks

Today was the dreaded day. The wife and I went and got the tags. In Oklahoma you do not pay sales tax on vehicles, you pay excise tax at the tag agent. That means several hundred up front. Plus we have a new tax plan which meant buying a 3 month tag to save paying a lot more. Our biggest problem was the number. We get to pick our number if it is in the series being issued. That is where the fun came in. I wanted 287 for the engine and my wife wanted 410 for four doors and our tenth vehicle. I told her that I would not have a tag with my shotgun caliber on it. I got my number, but I don't think that I won. Oh well, sandwiches are ok for a few nights.

The a/c drip really depends on where you live. In subtropical regions with high humidity..DRIP-POW- SIZZLE! Chrysler needs to address this issue. I sometimes park in a garage and I can hear my truck scream and sizzle from 40 yards away. I found the discharge tube. It is just above the exhaust downpipe on the passenger side. The tube just sticks out about 1/2 inch with no turn down. Very poor design. It would be easy to clamp a 90 degree elbow and some tubing to direct the condensation to the ground but it should not be my job to do on a brand new truck!
Sorry just had to vent...pardon the pun.
  • ahasherahasher Member Posts: 236
I thank you for the "pun" I too "vent" when I think I must modify a NEW truck, even tho the drip is harmless, but it alarms those unfamiliar with the source. I live in New Orleans, and my wife yelld and screamed for me the first time she heard it.. telling me my truck was on fire and was gonna explode (seriously). I will take a much closer look at the setup and see what my options are. However, i wonder (no mechanical/thermal dynamics degree) if the cold on HOT pipes will eventually cause damage...

I didn't order the factory fogs. Because the shop attached a dealer license plate on the front valence after specifically being told not to, I received a new valence off of another Dak. About four months after I had the truck, the dealer cut out the foglight holes for me for free while in for the $24 filter / oil change at 3,000 miles.

I had purchased a pair of Catz MSC's (3.5" dia, round) "real yellow" foglights (77 degree arc). Because I didn't have what I call the "transition hardware" which would go between the truck frame and the foglight frame, I had to develop it. I used 5" bolts, strap iron and treated lumber. I was definitely a chore and took hours to get the left to right alignment and setback "close" (still needs fine-tuned).

You're probably thinking that I must be nuts doing all of that but to me I now had "functional" "yellow" foglights. I didn't do it to be different, I'm not what you would call a flashy person, but I did it to achieve functionality. Here in the humid lowlands of south central PA, fog is an issue. And with all of the deer, well I smacked up a Volvo once on a nine-point and the car was almost totaled.

I just think its a waste of good money to get an accessory just for "looks".

here we go...called up D/C to find out status of my newly ordered (monday) quad and she said the truck was "scheduled to be shipped the first week in October." Based on all those prior experiences of posters here, how long from factory ship date to dealer delivery should I be looking at (bookitty excepted!) this is actually more than me just being quad crazy - like most of you I have to sell my old vehicle and use that cash toward my quad purchse. thanks.

spike50 - I went for factory fogs cuz I go up to see my sister and her kids in washington state, where they have tons of fog. Are the factory fogs dogs (poet - don't know it)? If so, can I replace with after market in an easy fashion.

The local dealer here in NY has a "Loaded" quad cab with msrp of $30,500. Trailer towing, leather seats, 6 way, etc. Does not look like any options are missing. What should I be able to buy this truck for??? Really appreciate some help.
  • fat_fendersfat_fenders Member Posts: 96
    dave,

Until I purchased my current 01 Dakota Quad Cab Sport 4X4 off the Dealer's lot, I had a "loaded" Quad on order. Only three options not included had been the full time transfer case, 3.92 axle and block heater. MSRP was $30,275. Would have cost $26,925 or $3350 "discount".

The Quad I bought off the dealer's lot was identical to mine on order, minus alarm, 4-wheel ABS and steering wheel radio controls. Price for that one was $29,555 MSRP. Cost was $26,305 or a $3205 "discount". So, I bought it and saved the wait!

Good luck and please post what you end up with for others to use. I found GIGGO.COM and DRIVEOFF.COM fairly accurate with pricing although 2001 Quad prices are not readily available. (2001 was on GIGGO with the exception of leather @ $580 MSRP or about $525 invoice.)

Found - One Andy Jordan! Seems he's been off on a world tour of the Bahamas or some such, and after a brief stint in one of their island jails (can't wait for that one), was out and back into the great frozen north ready to share his 'damned revenuers' story with us.

I even had his local newspapers lookin' thru the 'obits' for him (not kidding). I guess his wife'll prob'ly shoot me on sight, or maybe she's just wonderin' where she could've spent the insurance!

    So... welcome back andy_jordan! ;->

I went to a Chinese restaurant tonight for dinner. When they brought the check, they handed me a fortune cookie as usual. Imagine my surprise when I broke it open and read the following:

"Help me, I am being held prisoner in a Chinese Bakery, Andy Jordan"

Well, I immediately called themacguy, and Jack arranged for the ransom. They were asking for one barrel of crude and Jack negotiated them down to 1/2 barrel and a stick of chewing gum. Andy is due to be repatriated soon and we will no doubt hear from him soon.

Next time Andy goes on a vacation he should:

1). Ask permission (we may let him go)
2). Take a laptop and log on daily
3). Get a Saint Benard so that he can rescue him or least provide "spirits" at the appropriate time.
4). Invite all of along to keep an eye on him

thanks to whoever posted on the 01 dash kit for and aftermarket stereo, i plan to contact crutchfield today and get my pioneer 1.5 DIN ordered, and i will try to post some pics shen i am done. does anyone have experience with the 01 dash yet so i can get some tips and not destroy anything. i degress, now up to 900 miles on the SLT, 4x4, 4.7, auto, SLT+, tow, T&H, etc. and i hve no complaints other than third gear seems to be tempermental as to how smooth or hard that it engages, compared to the other gears. mileage is mostly highway at 55-65 and light city driving, and i am getting just below 16. of coarse the 265/70 series tires have a lot of tread, and also have been too willing to pass on the highway at this point. will post soon and hope that aj will join us again in the near future. to all of you who are lurking come and join us, we would enjoy you insights. now i am going to go check out the picture gallery.

So I'm sitting here eating fried Catfish, fries, hushpuppies prepared, by my great GA wife and drinkin a beer, wondering how many of us GA folks there are on this topic.
I'd like to have y'all send an e-mail and maybe we would have a Sat PM Quad meet someplace. Hooters sound good to me!! We could bring our coolers and pass a few hours getting acquainted and sharing lies and half-truths. I could even bring Lucy, my ever present Dashound (sp) - she likes almost 1/2 the people she meets; or Wally the Tom Cat - he doesn't like anybody except for the person feeding him.
Anyway, let me know if you'd like to have some kind of a get together. We might even get a good GA Barbecue place to host us, who knows.
I'm in Marietta, but that doesn't matter. My wife gives me $10 a week for gas - come to think of it, the meeting place better be close by!
Free admission if you have a Jane Fonda bumper sticker or latrine target!!
    Let me know.
    Be careful out there, y'all.
I usta be a Yankee, but I like pine trees, red clay and Southern .....
Semper Fi to those chosen few.
I switched to Scotch, time to sign off.

I posted the info on using an intrepid kit for the '01 dash. I just received my new Pioneer mini-disc head unit and CD changer on Thursday and spend Friday doing the install. I did take some pics of the process, and I will post a faq, hopefully tomorrow. The head unit replacement was pretty easy, the changer took a little more work. I was kinda impressed with myself (and a buddy helping me out). Since the power outlet (in the center console) was going to get blocked by the changer, I had the idea to move the power outlet to the back of the console for the rear seat passengers. I have to say it looks pretty sweet, look for pics tomorrow. I am still using the factory speakers, but home to replace them in the next week or so with components up front. I'll document that one too.

Look for the install faq Saturday afternoon, I'll post a link in the FAQ subject. If you have specific questions before then, just drop me an email. Good luck.

Not much chance to visit the board lately, but it's interesting to observe how many of the same questions/issues discussed when I was ordering my '00 are popping up again as others are taking delivery of their '01s... A few things for what one guy's experiences are worth...

QUADENIT & BIGAL -- You were discussing keeping the front bed drain holes open when a spray-in liner is applied. I would agree with that if no tonneau or cap is installed. However, if rain water isn't an issue, neither is spraying over the drain plugs. I discussed that with the installer... Could have gone either way, but my tonneau is very weather-tight... So chose to spray over the plugs and it's working very well. Prior to having the liner sprayed, I lost two of the smaller plugs in the rear of the bed when powerwashing the bed... Found replacements, but yet another reason why I chose to seal the whole bed off... Worst-case scenario? I may someday have to park on an incline to let the bed drain.

GAQUAD -- The Mopar Folding Tonneau is manufactured by Fold-a-Cover (may want to check their website). Its MSRP in the Dodge "red book" is $725 plus installation. I purchased it through a local Ziebart franchise for $550 and installed it myself.

The "old design" of this cover incorporated just one rubber sealing lip along the rail track. The new design has two, and I've found it very weather-tight even in heavy rains. As for versatility, it's GREAT so far!

By the way... I've used a maintenance tip for ALL rubber seals, gaskets, covers, etc. that was shared with me by Harley-Davidson factory techs... Prolong flexibility and life of these seals by periodically applying a thin coating of Dot 5 (H-D) brake fluid... It's 100% silicone as opposed to having potentially damaging compounds found in the silicone sprays... I've been using it for five years... It works GREAT, and sure is a lot cheaper than the spray cans!!

    Safe weekend to all!

Has anyone figured out how to turn off the horn honk when you lock the doors of the quad with the key fob? I have tried what the book says but to no avail it hasn't turned it off. any suggestions would be appreciated since I would really like to put air horns on. Thanks Wampus

also thanks 9611 for the response about the air flow with the dryer hose it was what I was wondering about what you did.

I have 2001 on its way and would like to know what parts it would take to make an air filter modification using PVC pipe with a K&N filter.I would be thankful for any responses to this and any other tricks that can be done under the shade tree LOL.
  • victxvictx Member Posts: 108
I too was unable to disable the horn honk. Several other '01 have posted the same. I haven't heard from anyone with a '01 who has been successful. I just haven't been back to the dealer to have them look into it.

Just finished a write-up on my stereo install, check it out:

Is the folding tonneau easy to remove? Also when it is folded, how much bed space does it take? Do you have any pictures?

tuckmiddle, I get the feeling there are going to be a lot of Quads in GA. It seems to be just the right sized vehicle. I'll let everyone know when I get mine.

Well I now know what scribble does. I apologize. I did not know that it would erase it. 497 was me asking about the Mopar Folding Solid Tonneau.
And I said that my truck was ordered Aug 19 and is supposed to ship next week. They tell me that it takes 10 days by rail to get to the dealer so I should have it in a couple of weeks. (Today is Sep 2.)

Amazing stereo install site! Very well done. What dig camera do you use? I wish the console lid on my 00 flipped up to the side like yours. That appears to be another functional change for 01 that hasn't been mentioned yet. Anyone done a retrofit with a little piano hinge on the 00?

My '00 has the heated outside mirrors and a solid back window equipped with defrost. The windows in the second set of doors and the back window are all tinted.

    Fat Fenders,

Much apology for delay in thanks for price help. Still have no 01 quad yet. Made an offer to the dealer (Sureski's) here in NY for the 01 quad on their lot of $26k. They wanted $28.5k and so it sits on their lot. Looks like I will look around some more. Was hoping they would deal as I really do not like the whole car shopping experience in general. Kind of funny when they list the cassette as an option. Seems like I have an 8 track in the attic someplace. I will keep searching and look to find at least a decent deal.

The camera is an Olympus D-360L, $299 at most places.

The holes in the fascia on the '01 are for tow hooks. This is new for '01. The actual hooks are not standard equipment. I inquired about them when I bought picked up my truck, dealer said something like $145. I politely said, "I'll get back to you on those" as I thought, "Damn, that's a rip-off".

    davewarwick
The cassette player should be standard equipment. My '01 window sticker clearly shows AM/FM cassette as standard equipment. I just finished upgrading to a Pioneer mini-disc head unit, si my OEM headunit is available if you are looking for one.
  • towcrazy2towcrazy2 Member Posts: 337
In response... When fully retracted, the Fold-a-Cover consumes about 12-14 inches at the front of the bed, though there is storage underneath.

Removal is a simple matter... Loosen two small locking bolts on either side of the bed, slip out the locking pin, stand in the bed and pull the folded unit straight up... An easy one-man job that takes about 4-5 minutes... Same goes for replacement.

Have had my 2000 Dakota Club cab, 4x4. SLT, 4.7, automatic transmission, less than two weeks. It was a dealer demo with 1,000 miles on it. Love the truck, butI'm getting a ticking or clicking noise when I first put the truck in "Drive" from "Park"....the sound lasts only a second or two. Also, when the transmission goes from 1st ro 2nd or 2nd to 3rd (not sure which)....it sometimes doesn't do so smoothly....has a little bit of a shutter (the best word I can think of to describe the feeling)....but after a little driving seems to stop.

any suggestions.....i'm bringing the truck back to the dealer this week to have a trailer hitch and skid plates installed, should I mention these problems to the dealer.......and are these known defects in this truck ?
  • myersedmyersed Member Posts: 102
I have heard the slight ratcheting noise when going from park to drive, since I bought the truck. I assume it to be the normal engagement sequence, seeing how I now have over 12000 miles and experience no upshift/downshift problems. From my experience, the ratcheting noise only lasts approx 1 second or less and usually I do not hear it with the windows closed, the radio on (not blaring), and the fan on.
I believe this was discussed by others in the forum approx 4-5 months ago
  • moparpower1moparpower1 Member Posts: 14
What package includes tinted rear window glass the power mirrors or is it the rear defroster option?
  • parfourparfour Member Posts: 7
myersed, thanks, I'm less concerned about the ratcheting noise at this point.......my main concern now is the non-smooth/stuttering when the manual transmission changes gears......seems to be happening in all gear changes, 1-2, 2-3, 3-4......I test drove the truck before I bought it, but never noticed the problem then.....

The xmission mated to the 4.7L hemi has the
ability to to 'learn' your driving habits and
    tune the shift charactoristics.

If this was truly a "demo" vehicle Ill bet that
the learning process is thoroughly confused. I see
    two choices for you.

    1) Ask dealer to "reset" the computer(s) to the
    default state.
    2) Keep driving it.
(In either case it will eventually "tune" itself
    for your driving habits.)

BTW... there has allready been a TSB about
"flashing" (re-programming ) the xmission computer.
If yours has not been done, you may find this will
    help the shifting too.

My window sticker shows "Glass-Deep Tint Sunscreen" as standard equipment. There is no other mention of tint on the sticker, so I would assume the tint is standard. All glass should come tinted except the front two windows.

victx - Great, and I mean great work on the stereo installation page. Came a week or so too late for me (rats). It looks like you covered everything VERY thoroughly. One question, do you have tilt steering? I don't and I had some trouble negotiating the large plastic piece out of the way.

If anybody else has a Manual tranny, here's a question:

I was flipping thru the manual and noticed that the truck has a shift light! The strange thing is that I have never seen it lit. Surely I haven't shifted perfectly over the last 2200 miles.... I'm not complaining though, I hate those things. I was just wondering if anyone else has noticed this.
  • parfourparfour Member Posts: 7
Thanks so much, I feel better now.....The shifting problem isn't too bad and doesn't happen all the time so I can live with it I guess, but will mention it to the dealer this week.
  • spike50spike50 Member Posts: 481
Have to agree with victx, I think the tinted windows are standard no matter if its a defrost equipped solid, plain solid or a slider. On my '00, the heated 6X9 heated power folding mirrors and the defrost solid rear (tinted) window was coded "GFA".
  • victxvictx Member Posts: 108
    chachingman
Yes I do have tilt and I do think it helped me get the dash cover off.

I too have the manual tranny, but have never seen the shift lights. I'm not complaining though, I don't like 'em.
  • snowcountrysnowcountry Member Posts: 15
I recall in an earlier post that the upshift light is disabled on the V8's. The entire dashboard is shared with the durango, you'll notice (when the light is right) another warning "tailgate open"

If you have the V8, have you noticed the long lag on upshifts (2-3, 3-4) when you push in the clutch? Mine seems to hang at 3000RPM for 2-3 seconds before it drops. - this makes for some bumping up-shifting
  • moparpower1moparpower1 Member Posts: 14
Thanks for all the responses reason I asked is because local dealer has an 01 just off the truck with clear rear glass and seen a few others going down the road.I like the look of tint and dealer told it would be when I ordered my 01 Quad. Have 99 ram with all windows done and like it alot but not legal in Mo. to have front sidewindows tinted.Moved here from WI and it was legal there. Also would like to know if anyone has had problem with lug nut covers coming off?Ram has covers falling off all the time gets old after awhile.
