I like the sedan's tailights, and yes they are shorter. Also interesting is the eyebrow-like accent crease coming off the trailing edge of the headlights.

It's hard to see, I wonder if it'll be prominent like it is on the BMW 5 series...you know I don't like that feature too much. A subtle one would be OK.

I agree -- looks like a Photoshop filter applied to an actual photo.

The changes shown in the photos do look very mild. Like many other mid-model Subaru changes, the changes are mainly focused on the front end. For example, the wagon rear looks pretty much the same as it does now with the exception of the 3rd brake light position. I also see a new tailight pattern and what looks like some strip that runs through the Subaru logo.

The sedan has new reflectors in the bumper -- not sure if I like that.

Is it me or does it seem like multi-spoke wheels (7+) are on many vehicles these days?

I wish I could confirm or deny based on a focus group I attended last year --- dang confidentiality agreement.

I got these over at nabisco. That rear light in the bumper could be an optional(?) rear fog light. That was mentioned over there.

The person who posted these images said that at glance the changes look very minor—but there are a lot of them. Meaning that the vehicle was throughly massaged, even though it looks very similar to the current models.

Just saw legacy pictures over at NASIOC. Subaru has done a great job with subtle changes. I love the new grill, it looks mean :D

Found these over at Nabisco! There are more over there.

Sure makes it look more aggressive, at least in Spec B form. Thumbs up!

gets a unique honeycomb grille, and in Japan will be available with both the 2.0 turbo and 3.0 H6 (see brochure image).

I like this upgrade a lot. I especially like the subtle changes to the rear of the wagon, which I always thought looked a bit dated, even when new.

It should also put to rest fears among those who don't like the Impreza/B9 grille. Although I do admit to concerns about FHI changing horses midstream regarding their design direction. I don't know how they will tie together future Subaru models as a "brand" from the front, which I think is important. The funny thing is the new Impreza, with the airplane front, the sales are way up over past models. So the "look" clearly did not hurt that model. I hope they stay with that design direction for future Imprezas, as it works very well, at least for that model.

Some may see this as a rejection of the "aircraft" front design approach. I don't. I see it as just another way of stating that same idea. I see the v-shaped chrome strip with the logo as a straight-on impression of an airplane, with wings and fuselage. It comes off looking like a jet fighter, or a small business jet, from head on.

The same could be said of the earlier Legacy grille, but I think it becomes more obvious in this latest rendition. It's just stronger and more prominent with this go-round.

One other thing I like about this new rendition is that it becomes a bit less like the stereotypical generic "Asian" grille. I've long complained that too many other Asian cars like the Toyota Matrix, various Kias and Hyundais all have models with grilles very much like the existing Legacy. By adding the "V" to this grille shape element, that becomes a bit less of an issue. Still, it isn't nearly as distinctive as the grille found on the Impreza or Tribeca. As many of you know I was hoping they would put a version of the Impreza grille on the new Legacy, thereby strengthening the "family" look and making it consistent across the entire model range, but I guess this is a pretty good alternative.

2.5L engine in WRX models might have boosted the sales. IMO airplane front is certainly better than generic front end on 2004/2005 MY. However, I think airplane front didn't fuel or deter sales.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
No question the 2.5 engine helped WRX sales, but I believe all Impreza sales are up.

Thanks for the heads up on the photos.

I agree that it does make me question how Subaru plans on keeping a uniform corporate look with this design. While I have not have been a fan of the new airplane look, backing away now leaves their portfolio looking quite scattered with various models at different levels of adoption (ie. Tribeca>Impreza>Forester>Legacy). I wonder if they are planning a bigger redesign with the next new Leggy chassis or if they are simply going to back down.

However, I do like the new lower bumper and the more aggressive lines. It works well with the sharper headlight design. I'm not so sure if the "V" shaped chrome communicates airplanes so much to me, but more ties in the lines formed from the new headlight shapes. In some ways, it looks a bit Mazda 6-like and isn't too original.

While I do like most of the changes, I'm not sure if I like the addition of a chrome strip on the wagon liftgate. I think the trend towards using chrome accents have come and gone and it makes it look as if Subaru just got lazy with how to spruce up the rear. The strip emphasizes yet another horizontal line in the rear which seems a little heavy when compared to the simple, and unmodified side of the vehicle. It just doesn't flow for me.

To me, it seems like they always spend too much time time on the front for their refreshes, making it look like they just grafted a new front end on the outgoing model.

In any event, I am glad that they decided to stick with the overall Legacy design. While it's conservative at it's heart, this tweak shows how it the design is flexible enough to keep things interesting.

I like what I've seen of the Legacy refresh so far... wanna see what they've done to the fenders/side, and the interior. While attractive, and more unique than the current look, the new chrome wings aren't original. When I see the grille, aside from recognizing the Subaru logo, it makes me think of some Chryslers, Hondas and Nissans, so I don't know how well this will work for making a clearly identifiable brand image.

I do like the way the silver-colored strip on the wagon's rear gate continues visually into the new taillights. It also follows the new look of the Forester, which has the same chrome strip across its gate.

The possiblities of seeing a 3.0 H6 Legacy are exciting, too.

Yep, the 3-piece Tribeca/Impreza grille would make the brand stand out much more than this approach in terms of brand identity—which is one of the points I've been making from the moment that grille direction was presented a few years ago.

    Note the following:

    • Oval gearshift surround on the center console

    • Paddle shifters(!) above the steering wheel

    • Other buttons below the steering wheel. One appears to be a phone volume button.

  • jeffmcjeffmc Member Posts: 1,742
Looks much more cluttered than the current dash/center stack, but I guess that's what you get when you add more features. Not sure I like the oval gearshift surround, either. That must be the SI Drive knob below the shifter, eh?

Phone button? Bluetooth! If they got it into this Legacy, I'm surprised they weren't able to get it into Tribeca in time for the 2007s, since their release dates are so close. At least it looks like Tribeca may get Bluetooth in 2008.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Yes, the SI Drive is a knob behind the shifter.

If Subaru does what they typically do, the refresh will leave the sides of the vehicle pretty much untouched. Their focus tends to be 80% front, 20% rear.

More pics at Nabisco show blue headlights (which would be interesting; I think Subaru should push the "blue" theme as much as possible for brand recognition). Not sure how they'd get away with that here in the U.S.

Interesting and unique are the slightly curving stripes within the front turn signals. They seem to make the "eye" of the headlight look more focused, and at the same time nicely guide the viewer's eye up to the shoulder crease. Wonder if they blink in a progression, like the old Mercury Cougars used to? Wouldn't that be something a bit gimmicky but fun?!

None of the pics seem to show an integrated turn signal in the side mirrors. I wonder if those have been discontinued.

looking at the '07 Legacy? Or did I miss a year? :confuse:

It's the '07 Legacy in Japan, but we won't get it 'til the '08 model year.

I like the larger grille opening, didn't one of the JDM models already get this look? If so we can't be sure we'll get that. Plus the bumpers are so streamlined that I would not count on us seeing those, either.

I wonder if the backup lights on the wagon are LEDs. Note the little dots.

I like the paddle shifters, give those to the Forester please!

I bet the gated shifter goes bye-bye with that new oval gear surround.

Overall looks good. Already did, but this is an improvement.

Spec.B grille looks a lot like the current Blitzen grille. I don't think the gated shift is gone.

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Blitzen, that's what I was thinking. They all look more like the old Blitzen.

Another JDM model that has the chrome wing look is the R2 "Refi Limited".

It's funny how you can see things coming. They always test things on limited-run models before they come out with major changes. Concepts always hint at production styling cues (but not overall styling).

We should learn to "read" the concepts better.

I don't expect the Impreza to look like the B5-TPH, for instance, but I bet we see a 3 door model and some other cues from it.

  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
For those not familar with the Blitzen, here's an image. The new Spec.B grille is very similar to what you see here.

    Bob
  • jeffmcjeffmc Member Posts: 1,742
If we'd have paid attention to the R1/R2, they held many of the B9 Tribeca's styling cues.
  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
Interesting blue lights. Isn't the Saab 9-7 doing that right now?

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Grille looks like a match, thanks for the pic. I believe people here responded quite well to that grille, even though I didn't see a big change from the existing one.

Looks cleaner, some badges were deleted thankfully. Not sure I'm crazy about those lights in the bumper, but overall it's nicer.

  • jeffmcjeffmc Member Posts: 1,742
I bet those are just reflectors, not lights, like the B9 Tribeca has at the top of its bumper.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
The JDM models never had the "SUBARU" badge on the rear deck with this generation model, so that hasn't changed.

More stuff to break in a minor fender-bender.

I like shaved bumpers and a streamlined look, but you still want something that is repair-friendly.

Are the flares bigger or is it just me?

The headlights seem more angled inward, too, more cats-eye looking.

I think it's the camera lens. However, the headlights are different than the current ones.

IMHO, the hood is too tall - it looks more SUV like now.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
It's the same hood. The grille is just deeper into the front bumper.

    Bob
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
You can see it above and below the steering wheel spoke. It must be 6" long, if not more!

Look at the 2 bulges on the hood - it's a different hood.

As I said, IMHO it looks taller.

I wonder when my focus group non-disclosure expires??

I like the look--a little meaner & more bad@$$ ;) Now just give it a low range tranny and LT tires... Eric
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
This is kind of interesting. The 3.0 has a dramatically different front bumper from the other Legacys. There is a vertical crease starting at the inside lower left edge of the headlight, that extends to the bottom of the bumper. The net effect is that it creates a raised plane that reminds me a tad of what VW and others have done. Also note the subtle "grille" that surrounds the fog lamps. From what I've seen, I like this bumper the best.

    Bob
  • jeffmcjeffmc Member Posts: 1,742
In the Outback, now I can see the integrated turn signals are set in the middle of the mirror, rather than at the bottom. I didn't see any integrated signals in the Legacy pics, but maybe they were just hard to see or something.
  • jeffmcjeffmc Member Posts: 1,742
I thought the flares seemed stronger, too - the wheels seem very large, and it seems to sit higher off the ground. But like Bob said, maybe it's all camera angle/lens.
