francophile, it's not the link that's busted -- it will probably work for you, but they want new users to go through the home page as they use cookies. When I clicked on it the first time, I got an error message, but it must have recognized me the second time and put me right through.

In short, my advice -- so nice, you should try it twice :)

Kirstie - Thanks for the tip. The spec sheet came up on the second try.

It's interesting to see the different UTOG numbers. Mine are due for replacement at 40K. I'm strongly considering the Dunlop Sport A2.

Jon: I had a Prelude SH (really miss that car) and it also came with RE92 tires. Same as the regular Prelude, just different rims.

William: I have Subaru wheel locks on my new LL Bean and my old Outback wagon, and they don't stick out much at all -- maybe 1/4" max. Is it possible you have the wrong locks?
  • hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
I have the Subaru wheel locks on my 2001 GT, and they do not stick out at all, they are flush with the rim like the regular lug nuts.

    Cheers Pat.

    Greetings -
I've been lurking for quite a while and have read All the posts here (Mods) and the Legacy/Outback board. Quite impressed with the attitude and comradery amongst you folks. I hear real solutions, and people actually go out to their car and verify what others are talking about.

I've scoured the web for a Grill/Brush Guard for my 02 Outback and have had virtually no success. I did find 1 but after e-mailing the company for more info they said it is no longer available and will be pulling it from their site.

    www.challengerdeep.com/Subaru%20Parts/Legacy%20Parts/ProtectionComp/Grilleguards.htm

If you take a look I prefer the last one on the page PN:AM1041
Does anyone have another source for something like this? I've also tried to hunt down the company 'KORP' with no luck. I'd like to mount 2 Hella/KC's up front just like pic.

Also, Grahampeters (post 6713) mentioned a 'dual ratio gearbox' (low range).
Just how difficult would it be to install a nonUSA gearbox from say, Australia? I've done extensive work with 4x4's and the like but have not worked on AWD systems. Would you expect a different transmission and drivetrain or would it be just the addition of a transfer case?
Not 100% I'd want to torch my warranty but I'm interested.

Happy 2002 to you all, Thanks
    Mike

If read several places where people have been interested in this, but I don't know if anyone has really tackled it.

There's a current thread on the i-club about it.

They touched on my main concern - the dual range isn't meant to handle the torque of the 2.5l engine.

In reality, the gear reduction is only something like 17%, and the 2.5l has more than 17% more torque than the 2.0l, so the advantage isn't all that.

...the dual range is used on the 2.5 Outback.

I stand corrected. Figures Bob would know, given his interest in the subject! :-)

I would not want to see that at all. Too many problems associated with it IMHO.

    Mike,

What problems have you heard with the self leveling suspension? Isn't it a self-contained system that uses forward motion to increase oil pressure in the struts? Leaks, perhaps?

Expensive air bladders in the XT6, probably. Wasn't it $500 per corner to replace?

Wow, thanks Paisan for the links. Right on target.
I take delivery of the Outback this Sat. I expect to have the BullBar installed by spring thaw. I'll get back with you.
    From the thread on i-club about dual range it sounds like adding it to a US Outback would be a good days work and voila. I'll keep an eye on the thread and will search the UK/Aussie sites for more info like price for unit etc. Maybe I can find a repair shop on another Continent that would be willing to help. :-}
    Thx - Mike

Just a note, it's about 40-50 days delivery time on the bars from ECB. SO take that into account. They are worth it though. Ask juice about the one on my Trooper! :)

The simple ones that come up, around, and back down are cool looking, and seem useful.

  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Yep $300/corner + $90/corner for the check valve + $300 compressor + $300 ECU for the Air-system. no thanks. Eventually even the best of the air-bag systems will leak!

Your post snuck in before mine.

Yes, paisan has one like I just descrived, with some wicked-bright fog lights mounted on them. Feels (and looks) like a tank.

The nice thing about the ECB ones is they are aluminum Alloy. Strong and Light.

If I weren't saving cash to trade in the wife's car, I'd be all over a matte black one.

    Juice,
"The simple ones that come up, around, and back down are cool looking, and seem useful."
I second that look/thought! I'm eyeing the Series 2 63mm in "Black Ripple"
The 47mm Nudge bar looks workable also.
Fear that Type 8 bar that looks like it wraps around the entire front end!
Looks alot like horned rimmed glasses. I guess if you're really bush wacking...

Thanks Paisan, Let me get it in the stable and figure out how to turn on the stereo...
Do you keep the lights covered? I've been pulled over for not having covers on a set of KC's before (I hadn't lit them for weeks). The cop let me off after clearly explaining that such lights needed to be covered while 'on road'. I'm such a criminal...

    Thx - Mike
  • c_hunterc_hunter Member Posts: 4,487
How much does the black 47mm bar for the Outback cost?

    Craig
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
the series 2 is about $330 shipped and the regular bar is $275. Depending on the exchange rates etc. That's signed sealed and delivered.

I sometimes keep em covered, I like to keep em covered but like to have em exposed often. They also have city ligts in them which are nice, 5watt bulbs in the bottom of the reflector thatI have linked to the parking lights. With the covers on them, they glow nicely but the covers don't have to be taken off.

The 130w bulbs in there are linked to my high beams so when I put on the high beams they come on. Very nice for flash to pass. Gives it a whole new meaning. My buddies call them the "god" lights cause it's like god telling them to get out of the way! The Eurobeam on the Hella 4000s is excellent, and they are adjustable with 2 knobs on the back of th elights for quick changes. I've had em on 1 year and no problems with them at all.

Also the uncovered lights and tinted front side windows could earn me a ticket easily. But usually i'll take that ticket over a speeder any day. i've gotten out of countless tickets because the cop was able to find some equipment violation rather than give me a mover.

Do any Outbacks that you know of have those nudge bars? Are they easy to install for a light DIY'er like myself? Or is it easy to find a shop to do it?

That's a good price. My birthday is in October, gotta remind my wife!

    LOL, God lights!

    OK I've got another question.
With the 16" Wheels, just how wide can I go on the Outback Wagon? TireRack will tell me what I already know: 225/60R16 but will 235 or 245 fit without rubbing? I'd like to make arrangements at the local tire shop to swap out my new tires (OEM-Bridgestones) with a better tire and a wider foot print.
Here's the catch, I pick up the car on Sat. so I need to make arrangements Friday afternoon.

245's might be too wide, just how deep are the wheels? 6.5"/7"?

Also, what brand/model would you recommend, I live in Detroit and desire all season tires. Speed ratings don't matter, I won't exceed 90mph very often...

(I recall seeing a discussion about the '02 tires etc. recently but can't remember the Discussion Heading it was under)

    Thx - Mike

Just got e-mail from mysubaru.com - lots of accessories for various years & models. I think I can finally justify a tweeter kit... reg. $30.75 but now $16.00 - on my to-do list for Monday!

    Cheers!

I found a site that suggests the widest tire installed as a 235/60 but not the factory wheel width.

Easy bolt on install. I haven't sold any in the US nor seen any installed yet. Wanna buy one? :)

Trying to talk my wife into it. She had a brush guard when she had the Rodeo.

She could really use "god lights" too since she travels to work on Rt. 22.

Mike - I would be interested, if it doesn't make the OB too gawdy.
    Oh, I e-mailed you 'bout the Tri-State 48hr run.

Mike: which bar is the one shown below? The 47mm bar? The descriptions on the web page seem out of phase with the pictures.

    image

Also, do you have details about how these mount to the Outback?

    thanks,

    Craig

  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
That is the 47mm Nudge bar. I can find out exactly how they mount but if they are the same as the Trooper ones, they will have a sub-frame that gets bolted to the frame of the car or other strong spot on the vehicle and then the nudge bar actually will attach to that. Very sturdy setup and it doesn't take away your tow-hooks which is nice.

Mike- while you're checking, find if the bar will fit my '98 OB.

i was cruising around pricing out some mods i am thiking of doing when i came upon something i had never seen before. an adapter that goes onto the end of your MAF sensor, then takes a filter, as you would find on your standard intake. i assume this is how it works. has anyone seen this before? it's new to me. comments? experiences?
  • miksmimiksmi Member Posts: 1,246
Do you know the brand or have a URL with some info or photo?

    ..Mike

    ..Mike

  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
JC Sports has 'em, gawd. I think maybe www.teaguesauto has the adapter too? Problem is it is still hot, turbulent engine air, since we Legacy pilots don't get those hood vents the RS guys do. Unless you want to take a jig saw to your hood and drop an RS vent in there. not me.
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
actually I get my cold air from the bumper inlet. it puts cold air all inside the fender / splashguard and some have run dryer hose to go directly from the top of the fender air inlet all the way to the bumper vent.

if you open those hood vents hot air will flow out, nothing will flow in. although MRT makes a scoop to force air in... ;)

    -Colin
  • bluesubiebluesubie Member Posts: 3,497
Kevin Thomas had that on his Turbo/Nos OBS. It was cool!

    Dennis
  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
Legacy doesn't have those fender vent either. In a Legacy, all a cone filter will get you is hot air and cool sounds.

I am actually thinking of going back to the snorkus, after I saw my post-RallyCross panel filter :-O
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
You should have seen my post-Pine Barrens filter - lots of sand. At least no water got in.

    -juice
  • bluesubiebluesubie Member Posts: 3,497
Didn't Ed say that he had a lot of sand as well after the P.B. ?
Ed, do you have the snorkus-ectomy?

I have a stock airbox with an Amsoil and snorkus and got absolutely no sand (ok, maybe 2 or 3 grains).

Maybe it's because I was outrunning the sand. :-)
