Fritz, I am also eager to learn more about the fix for the V6 fuel boiling problem. If American Honda does now have this problem solved, and has provided the information and updated components to their dealers, I would not be worried about being the "first in line" at your dealer for this repair. If the fix is limited to direct replacements of the ECM and the fuel pressure regulator, even a rather weak service department should have no trouble with this. Please keep us posted.
This concerns a 1995 Accord Wagon EX (4 cyl, auto trans). After accumulating apprx. 5,000 miles on a new set of tires, the car begins to shake, shimmy and rattle at all speeds. Car has had numerous alignments and high speed spin balance on all four wheels. We have been told A: bent wheels, B: bad tires, C: unbalanced tires, etc. Nothing seems to work on eliminating this problem. Car has 115,000 miles and has had this problem for past 75,000 miles. Is there something in the trans that could be causing this problem? Also, the tires do not wear evenly after rotation.
Although I am not an expert like Auburn, I do know a little here and there as I am a car nut and have had my problems with my older car. As far as I know, a tranny cannot cause the uneven wear of tires. Uneven tread wear is caused by an imbalance and/or misalignment of the wheels. The suspension can be the culprit, but you said that you had them aligned. Aside from bent/imabalanced wheels and poor tires, perhaps a part of the car is badly misaligned or out of place...did you buy this car used? If it had been in an accident, the subframe may have been damaged and gone unnoticed. The slightest damage to the subframe can cause serious symptoms. Once again, I am only speculating...Auburn or someone who knows more will be more help.
Adg: Wow! You're pretty big for a 16 year old! I've given up on getting any taller...I'm 5'8 170 lbs. (average sized male of north america) and I found the Prelude really roomy. And the Prelude SH in Canada comes with leather, although I'm not too fond of them...not enough lateral support. Besides, when I get my new car, I'm changing it to racing seats (and a bunch of soup ups)......and I'm gonna r a c e that baby! As for the fuel...the Accord engines are designed to take lower octane fuel. And 87 is perfect...93 will retard the combustion and give slightly sloppier engine response...I think the higher the octane, the more resistant it is to instantaneous combustion. If you're gonna take chem. (boring) you'll learn this.
Snowman, The oil drain plug is a 17mm and there is a aluminum crush washer under it that must be replaced at every oil change. Have fun.....
As far as boil over, wasnt at work today I went to play golf so I will see if we have any info on it yet but it sounds as if it will be an easy repair..
Shake shimmy and roller, Where do you feel this shimmy at? Is it in the steering wheel? Like can you see it shake or is it a feeling in the car? Do you feel it driving at slower speeds worse or is it progressive as you speed up? If you could tell us as much as possible. Thanks......
When I purchased my '00 Accord v-6 the dealer recommended 89 octane and stated if that once I use 87 or 89 I can go up in grade, but never down. So I've been using 89 - seems ok. Auburn63 -your comments? Given the price of gas, can I now step down to 87 (8,000 miles on the car). Thanks
Cars will get used to a certain grade and may ping on initialy downgrading on the octane but will be fine once it adjust itself. If it doesnt ping on initial downgrade then there will be no ill effect. I think you will be fine with no problems to go to the 87 due to your car is still new..
Thanks for the input. More info: Car was purchased new and has never been involved in any accident. The shake can be felt at all speeds, including initial movement. The shake is more pronounced at lower speeds with vibration coming through the steering column and within the car itself. At higher speeds, the vibration tends to decrease but still exists. When new tires are installed, there is no problem with the car. After second rotation of tires, we begin our problem anew. It seems that the tires wear unevenly in the front so that when they are rotated that second time, the shakes begin. We have had this car aligned (four wheel and spin balanced) numerous times to no avail. The struts, we have been told, are in good shape and do not need to be replaced. The wheels (aluminum) are not bent or damaged in any way. The brakes (rotors and pads) have been replaced due to normal wear a couple of times so I don't think there is a problem in that area.
Xanthus, Sounds to me since it is worse at low speeds that a belt has shifted in one or more of the tires.Probably just one of them so try and spin it and see if you can see it out of round. This is sometimes hard to see because it may need weight to be on it(car on the ground). But try it off the ground and see.
Wahid, Honda has known about the problems for a few months and have been fixing them as soon as possible. The Accords have always been a great car and will continue to be, I wouldnt be a bit affraid of buying one. Test drive it for more than a trip around the block. Ask them if you can drive it for 30 minutes or so to see if you like it. Then if you like the way it drives and handles then buy it if not completly satisfied then look around.I have worked for Honda for 16 years and I still think they are great cars.Good luck.....
I have been driving Honda Accords since 1984. I had 198,000 miles on the 84 when I sold it and bought a 1991 Honda Accord LX. Today it died with 219,000 miles on it. It averaged 29.8 MPG over the last 20 tanks. It would have lasted a lot longer but I neglected it for the last year and paid the price. I really want to get a new Honda, but some of the above posts are giving me pause.
I've had my EX V6 coupe for about 2 months now, it was built in Feb, and I've never heard this problem. I doubt it's anything to worry about. My only problem is the damn rattle coming from the rear part of the headliner!!! And the damn right front speaker that rattles. Oh well. Honda said they changed the front speaker, but I highly doubt that they did. Good luck.
Complete your due diligence on the Accord and be careful not to fall for the marketing hype that Hondas are fault-free. Besides the transmission problems discussed here the V-6 has had problems too. The Accord also seems to have a lot rattles in them too, sort of surprising to me.
Since so many people have mentioned these problems, they do not seem to be isolated incidents. It pays to shop the field and compare other vehicles, there are a lot of good ones out there these days.
My Grandmother currently owns a 1991 Honda Accord EX 4-cylinder automatic. The problem is that she can't get the shifter out of park. In order to get it out of park, she has to turn the car off and then turn the key into the second position. Anyone out there that knows what is wrong please help me.
I have a minor problem with my 99 accord EX V-6. Whenever I go over a bump there is an annoying rattle which is coming from the middle of the dash, (where the radio, heater controls are located). It sounds like coins rattling in a plastic ashtray. I tried to take the cover off by removing the two screws at the bottom so I could take a look, but the top was securely attached and I couldn't get it off. Does anyone have any suggestions? Will a dealer look at so minor a problem and try to fix it under warranty?
Take a close look at the J D Power ratings. The Avalon had 99 problems per 100 cars and the Accord had 117. Pretty close competition. Also the Avalon and the Maxima are more expensive automobiles. This is only for the first 3 months of ownership, too. Don't count the Accord out yet. My coupe is 3 months old and I have had one major problem and it was taken care of quickly and fixed right the first time. Time will tell.
I'm buying a 92 accord EX. I showed it to a mechanic for inspection and he told me the oilpan gasket is leaky. He coulnd't tell me how much it costs to fix it. Is it a serious problem?
rgist If it comes out of gear without a struggle then the cable is probably ok so that means its either a ignition switch problem(possible but not likely), a shift inhibitor switch, bad trans control unit or a brake switch. With car on(engine running) press the brake pedal and see if you can hear a click noise each time you depress the brake. If so it should come out of gear, if not have someone check the brake lights and see if there working. If at any time you hear a strange buzzing sound durring this it has a bad trans control unit.If no noise and brake lights are working wiggle key around and see if it changes anything. The most common is the brake switch and the TCU or a trans that is not all the way in park so make sure of that first..Hope I didnt confuse you with all the choices..
Mhosseini We get about 140.00 I think and it is not a big deal to change. Not serious as long as you keep an eye on your fluid level.
My car is great except for the damn rattles coming from the headliner! I mean geeze, if you close the sunshade for the sunroof, it rattles, and the back part of the headliner rattles ALL THE TIME! And worse than that, the front right speaker sometimes vibrates and rattles and Honda won't fix it. But other than that, the car is good. I just thought that they wouldn't rattle so much. Solid cars, eh?
Had a very small oil leak-couple of drops on my garage floor. Turned out to be the balance shaft seal, which was a surprise and disappointment to me. My dealer gave me a free rental car to drive and had it fixed the next day. The service manager said that this had not occurred on any of the newer Accords and I have seen nothing posted on any of the Honda boards about this problem. Must have been an isolated case (I hope).
My wife has a 97 4 door LX and it has given 0 problems thru 60,000 miles. I also have a 91 4 door LX that was virtually trouble free until 125,000 miles. From there to 146,000 miles it has had the following--radiator, master cylinder and 1 axle replaced. A 91 Lexus that I owned had to have a master cylinder at 85,000 miles, much sooner than the Accord. The Lexus also developed an oil leak and transmission fluid lead before I sold it at 92,000 miles. Also had vibration problems that I could never get rid of.
Any make can give some problems, but for me the key has been a good service dept at my local dealer. I would have bought Toyota, but none of the local dealers in my area give a crap after the sale.
Thanks for the info. I can't STAND rattles, thats one of my pet peeves.
I was reading the June Car and Driver today and they didn't rate the Honda Civic as well as I would expect, worse than a Ford!!! Said it had a harsh ride, lots of engine racket and road drone. I know its not an Accord, but whats goin on with Honda lately?
My daughter bought a 98 Civic Coupe EX new. Great little car.
Remember, this is the "Honda Accord problem forum". Most of what you read here will be from people that have had problems, otherwise it would be called the "I love my Accord" forum. Same as for the Camry problem board that you posted on.
Seems that you are looking for the perfect car, which, IMO, does not exist. Good luck anyway.
It would be the upcoming 460 HP NSX......ohhhhhh yeahhhhh. I can only dream of it! so for me in reality its the Prelude and Accord. I only have 2000 clicks on my Accord but its got 0 problem, 0 noise. I once thought there was a noise from the dash but whenever it was sunny there wouldn't be any noise...and guess what? It's my sunglasses moving around in the holder!
Auburn63.. I have a 2000 Honda EX-L. I also have experienced the hesitation two-three minutes after driving my car when it's warming up. Did you ever find a resolution to your problem? Thanks..
Two choices, 1. Is to let the car warm up for about 1 min before you drive.
2. I have seen the idle adjustment procedure work for certain 4 cylynder models. They tend to stall and or hesitate at any given moment. So the fix for this is to have a dealer, using the pgmfi checker, reset the idle. Note if they dont use the checker then they are not reseting the value. ...and your welcome hope I have helped....
I have been told that the excessive noise originating from my engine is being caused by the rocker arms. This is hard to believe that they need replacing since I have less than 50k on the engine, the oil has been changed religiously, and maintained regularly including adjusting the valves! Is this an inherent problem with VTEC engines? This definitely concerns me especially when I am considering future purchases. I really do not want to pay $600 every 50k miles or so. I would appreciate any help with this problem.
Well I think you might just be unlucky. I have not seen the V-Tech model need rocker arms. I have seen many of the 94-95 accord non V-Techs need them due to the noise and the #2 cylynder mostly. When these are noisy a one time replacement of the rockers with a new updated part fixes them for ever it seems.I think if I was you I would make sure I had them adjusted by a Honda tech and see how long the adjustment holds. You might find that that is all you need or atleast it can buy you some time. Good luck
I have had my 2000 Honda Accord Coupe EX with the V-6 and leather for about 2 months. Love the car as expected since this is my second new Honda Accord I have purchased in the past 8 years.
Only a few problems with it and would like to hear if anyone else has observed any of the same.
1) Wind noise from the right side passenger door at 60 mph or more.
Resolution: Dealer had the vehicle in the shop one day and test drove it a number of times. Mechanics agree there is definitely a wind noise coming from the passenger door (noise is not present on the driver side door). Dealer is ordering a window run channel to be replaced. They say they are not sure this is going to fix the problem, but this is the next step.
2) Creaking noise from both door arm rests when you touch them or lean on them normally when sitting.
Resolution: Dealer says this is normal.
Well I don't know if this is normal or not but I expect more from Honda in their design and engineering. Kinda disappointed. Would expect creaking from arm rests to come from an American car company not Honda.
BTW, my interior is leather with leather on the side of the doors and arm rests.
I imagine everyone is now going to go out and push on their arm rests.
3) Does anyone else feel the road noise from the tires is somewhat excessive at highway speeds?
The tires on this car are the standard (for the EX model) that Honda provides. They are the 16" Michelon MXV4 Plus tires.
I have driven Michelon tires for the past 12 years and always buy them as replacements.
Is this road noise a problem with the sound deadening architecture Honda uses or the tires?
Talked with American Honda today about extending my warranty after an oil leak developed at 1,000 miles (balance shaft seal was replaced). They offered to extend to 48/60 on the engine with no prodding. I was surprised and pleased. Only one phone call to the zone office did the trick.
Theses particular Michelon tires are actually luxury tires that are quite expensive. Although they do not shine in any particular category such as noise or grip, they do offer really good traction for all types of roads and conditions such as dry, wet, snow...etc. With such a broad performance spectrum, there are definitely compromises such as noise. BTW these tires are also geared towards comfort as opposed to performance. As for the armrests, my car does not make the noise, although I don't have the leather.
Purchased a 2000 Accord SE in December. In Mid April I started the car up and I heard all the appropriate beeps from the testing system however, the SRS light would no go out. Called the dealer and he stated that I should make sure that all objects are off the passenger seat before I start Car. The seat apparently has a sensor that gauges weight and turns the air bag off if it determines a child is sitting in the front seat. Well I do have a habit of placing my brief case on the passenger seat every morning (Handy there for a Quick run for the Bus). I moved the bag changed seat positions (suggestion by dealer) No effect the light stays on.
Called dealer "No problem bring it in but our Mater Mechanic has to look at it and is only in on week days". This dealer has been great so I prefer going there but they are 25 minutes in the wrong direction.
Probably will get it there next week.
Has anyone had this problem I have not had a chance to read through all the posts.
Silvercoupe- I understand that this is a Honda Problem forum so I am not surprised to find problems here. I am however VERY surprised to find so MANY problems with nearly brand new 2000 Accords! My wife and I have been shopping for a new car for a while and are using the Edmunds boards for info. Based on my observations the Accord seems to be unique in having so many problems with brand NEW cars.
boiling fuel rattles in dash squeaky door panels transmission problems air bags hesitation rattles in the sunroof oil leaks etc etc
Your expectations of a quality vehicle probably differs from mine.
1st off I am very happy with the Accord. I have driven virtually every almost every other mainstream car possible and in the midsize family car range (4 cycl.) there is not a better car.
Post in this forum the ultimate car you buy and I am sure people will gladly rip your decision making and the car apart. example: How could you buy a Camery they deleted the side impact bars and gave you a CD player. VW Passant Highly rated by Consumer reports. To small overly expensive and ground clearance a FULL 2 Inches less then Accord's. Accord you purchased an EX when an LX V6 is a better value.
Buying a 6 cycl. changes the analysis.
Simply put, based on MY buying criteria you could not possibly buy the right car even if you bought an Accord. Unless it was an SE with no options and you have the same exact considerations as I do.
Finally, please list the cars you believe are less trouble free and I will explain to you the error of your ways. I also looked at all the posts before buying my car and believe me the problems are a matter of degree and all the cars have them. The one thing I would be careful of doing is assuming many posts on different problems means poor reliability. For example 1 post on oil leaks and one on Transmissions could mean someone bottomed out and did not know it or you find out later that your teenage son borrowed the car and attempted several neutral drops without your knowledge (I heard transmissions today protect against neutral drops. Don't know in my day they were so cool until you had to pay the repair bill.
I have had 1 minor problem with my Accord and hopefully it will be the last. Lastly, please do not assume that after you checked all the posts and looked at all the mags and have found a car with little posted troubles its the perfect car. Because its probably an e-class Benz and you were looking at that car you would not have posted in an Accord forum. If you buy the E-class I will agree with your purchase.
Sorry guys I justed started posting(Long time reader) on Edmunds and to many times I see posts in the wrong forum like mine in this one.
More and more I think about accord's problems, I come to realize that Honda made Accord TOO affordable. I think that's why they have to cut on the money spent on factory quality control. They might have used cheaper parts too. I mean, compare to similar Camry, Accord costs like $1000 less, but IMO has a lot better look and interior design. The interior materials seem also of higher quality than Camry. I guess that's why some people get fine accords, and some don't. --terminalis
Quality to me means NO problems ever with a new car. But that just ain't gonna happen in a car in the price range of the Accord and Camry. Now if you want to go look at the Lexus LS400, that's a different story. Different price too. Good luck in your search for the perfect affordable car, because it just ain't out there.
I have been driving for 34 years, and have found the Accord to be the best car value for the price. You may see it differently, but until you have one and drive it for a while, don't be too quick to criticize.
As our first ever Honda in the family, am I very disappointed. The interior rattles constantly, the front right speaker causes the door to rattle, and now I have rain spots in the paint and Honda says they can't do anything. I am going tomorrow morning to Nissan and seeing about trading my car in for a 00 Max SE.
The type of problems that Auburn has been recently discussing regarding the rocker arm problems with the 94 and 95 Accords are the type of problems I would expect to see on this board...."I have seen many of the 94-95 accord non V-Techs need them due to the noise and the #2 cylynder mostly"...not so many problems with brand new cars of the lot.
I think any objective person would have to admit some surprise that the 2000 models are having so many problems with transmissions, hesitation, rattles, creaky door panels etc.
Was just reviewing the J. D. Power and associates initial quality results (after 3 months of ownership). The only cars ranked above the Accord that are equally priced or cheaper were the Camry and Corolla. The #1 car was the Lexus LS400, with 79 problems per 100 cars sold. The numbers were as follows:
Corolla--99 problems per car Camry----102 " " " Accord---117 " " "
All are really pretty close, but none of them ranked as "perfect", even tho I would consider the LS 400 the perfect car for me.
Also, Consumer Reports consistently rates the Camry and Accord at the top of their class.
If this can't convince the average consumer that these are pretty good cars, then what does it take.
As for some of the problems posted on this board, they are by a teenager that has had his car for 2 months, made several handling and performance modifications, and is now not happy with his car. He posted last night that he is going to try to trade it in on a 2000 Maxima today. Do you really take a lot of stock in postings such as these?
Take what you read here with a grain of salt, but pay attention to J. D. Power and associates and Consumer Reports. I try to buy what Consumer Reports recommends if I can afford it, and have never gone wrong so far.
As alot of you know I have been a Honda tech for 17 years now. In all those years I have seen problems of all kinds. These are machines and as technology changes so do the problems. In an effort to keep improving, car makers make mistakes and they sometimes do not show up until they reach the customers. This is always an inconvenience but that is why they come with warranties.Honda has always had a great car line and bumper to bumper warranty that covers everything but wear items, even bulbs up to 3 years or 36,000 miles. No one not even the best car line in the world is rattle free, noise free, or problem free. As for those with problems I have not seen many that can't be fixed. There are those that are normal but when not satisfied with an answer that a tech gives you ask to see the zone rep. They are very knowlegable and have alot of say.You can also try another dealer in search of a better tech. One last thought is that there are a lot of Accords on the road and many of them are problem free and wouldnt know what we are talking about in here. So remember these post are usally from those with problems and the reason they are here is to help those with the same to come to a conclusion on how to repair them.We Honda techs have a tech line we can call and one of the purposes of that line is to find out if it is an isolated problem that we are having or if many are having the same across the country. Much like this posting site..... Well sorry for the long post but that is my.02cents worth I think they are great cars... have a good day
Silvercoupe - Thanks for the info on the JD Power study...very interesting. The Accord has almost 19% more problems than a low cost car like the Corolla? I reviewed the data and the Accord did not even make ANY of the top three rankings in ANY of the categories. Even the Maxima did and it is a new design this year.
I am also surprised to see that Honda did not rank very well in the JD Powers Vehicle Depenability Study. Honda even ranks significantly BELOW Buick of all cars!!! Honda is rated about as dependable as a Mercury!
So if I take your advice and ignore the Accord problems detailed on Edmunds and only rely on data from surveys then I am left with a car that is not ranked in the top of its class, has 19% more problems than a cheap little Corolla, and is significantly less than a GM Buick car. I guess only one who is not objective can find anything positive about the Accords declining quality in those results.
Auburn - thanks for your participation on this board. It helps us consumers find out some of the inside info before we make our purchases or helps us with problems after we make the purchase.
Can you explain to me what the "fuel boiling" problem is and what the status is of the repair for this?
Well I see I am not getting many responses to my creaking arm rest problem on my 2000 Honda Accord Coupe V6 EX with leather interior. There has been one response who said they did not have the problem, but they did not have the leather interior.
Two questions:
1) Where does one report this to Honda (email, phone call, written letter)? Since the dealer says this is normal, I believe my only recourse is to let Corporate Honda know this detail about their product.
2) Would like to hear from others if they experience the same problem with the arm rests creaking. I would like to determine a) if this is a problem only with the leather interior and not with the non-leather interior and b) if this problem is isolated or common with their design.
My new Accord LX has an armrest creaking problem. The "creak' is in the center armrest/console (between driver and front seat passenger). I have not been able to isolate and identify exactly where the creak is. Hope to find it and try to eliminate it with a little WD-40.
Any suggestions as to it's point of origin?
Somewhat disconcerting to have a squeak or rattle at less than 200 miles!
t1565, then why don't you go buy yourself a new Maxima (nice car), or a cheap Corolla or one of those higher rated GM cars? I have had pretty good luck with Honda since 1984. What else can I say?
tl565 - auburn63 may show up and summarize the fuel boilover problem, but I wanted to let you in on a little known topic feature here.
You can use the Search button at the bottom of the page to look for key words contained within an entire topic.
Click on that Search button under the Response Window and a new window will open. You'll have a dropdown list on the left from which you can choose "Responses in Current Topic." Then, I'd suggest using the word boil in the "containing" box. When you click "Search" you will get a list of links to the posts that contain that word. Reading through them will tell you all that we have already discussed on this problem.
Good luck!

When I was very young, I worked part time in a gas station/repair shop. This was in the late sixties.
Back then, cars were constantly needing one thing or another!
When I see someone complaining about having to replace a master cylinder or radiator after 140,000 miles or something, I just smile!
Hell, cars didn't even last that long a few years ago!
Oil leaks? It seemed like EVERY car leaked oil!
Nope, they sure don't build em' like they used to!
They say they are not sure this is going to fix the problem, but this is
the next step.
Any comments on any of these 3 issues?
Thanks for your input. Larry
Still love my Honda!!!!
Called dealer "No problem bring it in but our Mater Mechanic has to look at it and is only in on week days". This dealer has been great so I prefer going there but they are 25 minutes in the wrong direction.
Probably will get it there next week.
Has anyone had this problem I have not had a chance to read through all the posts.
boiling fuel
rattles in dash
squeaky door panels
transmission problems
air bags
hesitation
rattles in the sunroof
oil leaks
etc
etc
Your expectations of a quality vehicle probably differs from mine.
I have been driving for 34 years, and have found the Accord to be the best car value for the price. You may see it differently, but until you have one and drive it for a while, don't be too quick to criticize.
I think any objective person would have to admit some surprise that the 2000 models are having so many problems with transmissions, hesitation, rattles, creaky door panels etc.
Corolla--99 problems per car
Camry----102 " " "
Accord---117 " " "
Well sorry for the long post but that is my.02cents worth I think they are great cars... have a good day
I am also surprised to see that Honda did not rank very well in the JD Powers Vehicle Depenability Study.
Can you explain to me what the "fuel boiling" problem is and what the status is of the repair for this?
thanks for your help
Two questions:
1) Where does one report this to Honda (email, phone call, written letter)? Since the dealer says this is normal, I believe my only recourse is to let Corporate Honda know this detail about their product.
2) Would like to hear from others if they experience the same problem with the arm rests creaking. I would like to determine a) if this is a problem only with the leather interior and not with the non-leather interior and b) if this problem is isolated or common with their design.
Thanks folks, Larry
Any suggestions as to it's point of origin?
Somewhat disconcerting to have a squeak or rattle at less than 200 miles!
Regards,
Jack
You can use the Search button at the bottom of the page to look for key words contained within an entire topic.
Click on that Search button under the Response Window and a new window will open. You'll have a dropdown list on the left from which you can choose "Responses in Current Topic." Then, I'd suggest using the word boil in the "containing" box. When you click "Search" you will get a list of links to the posts that contain that word. Reading through them will tell you all that we have already discussed on this problem.
Good luck!
