Corian is fantastic in terms of durability. I doubt it will matter, but if we ever get to the point of having a kitchen in my house, I'll probably put in some combination of Corian and butcher block. The stone is just too fussy.

Granite is not fussy - we abuse the heck out of our granite (look at the pic with the 14 gallon carboy on it) and it’s held up great.

The quartz at the shore we do baby because we read you can treat quartz like granite.

Yeah, I’ve never been a fan of Corian. Guy there told me they mostly do commercial stuff with it these days. But the Onyx line didn’t look like Corian. Not going that way though.

What’s nice about Corian is it can be sanded and refinished to like new at any time.

We aren’t that hard core. We buy the grape must already processed. We add the yeast and monitor the fermentation. Rack it a few times and bottle it.

It comes in 6 gallon pails from either Italy or CA. When you get it the grapes are already starting to ferment and then go crazy when you add the yeast

We had it too in the 90s. We got quartz for our bar/countertop. It’s fantastic. Very durable. Our contractor had us pick out what we liked and we hired a designer to help because I know nothing about colors and what goes with what. They both advised going with a well known company and the results were very nice. Very practical!

It was sitting in a booth behind some old school desks. It was dusty and had a few light scratches on the back, but looked in great shape. The person who "owned" the booth was there rearranging his display. When I spied the subwoofer, it looked in great shape. I asked if I could inspect it, and he said to "be my guest". Had to move the school desks to see it. But, I immediately recognized the brand as SVS. Those who are into the AV hobby know the company and know it's well respected. He didn't know if it worked and said he got it as part of a bigger estate buy he did a few months ago. Asked what he wanted for it, and he said he was tired of moving it around. It weighs ~60 lbs, probably? He didn't have the power cord for it so I couldn't test it. He said to make an offer.

Not knowing if it worked but looked in excellent condition, I offered him $50. He took it for no other reason than he was tired of moving it around.

Know what? Got it home, dug into my power cord collection (which is extensive), plugged it in. It works. Not only does it work, it works to the point where I pulled another of my trusty subwoofers out of my hometheater system and replaced it with this one.

Sometimes even a blind squirrel finds an acorn.

Nice! In 2003 I had my VTF-3R delivered to my office; the shipping weight was 93 pounds and it was a bear to load into my old Wrangler. At least I bought it during a free shipping promotion...

I’m sure I told this before … but the Amazon driver couldn’t get the Klipsch 15” sub I bought off the truck without help. I actually got a message “your Amazon driver needs your assistance”. I was on a work call and had to drop for a minute to assist.

Gave it a workout last night with War of the Worlds. It's the real deal.

I think since the seller didn't have the power cord, he didn't plug it in to see if it worked. If he had known, I don't think he would have EVER agreed to $50.

Trying to find the grill attachment. Called SVS and they said it's a metal cover that is specially made for SVS. And, they'd have to special order one as it's not something they keep in stock. They will order one from their supplier for $250. Not sure that's worth it to me. Will pass.

No reason to think my dog would mess with it, but wouldn't mind having the cover just in case.

Will scour fleabay!

I’m surprised the seller didn’t look on-line to see what a new one or even a used one sells for today. Isn’t that the normal course of action today? So, if you snooze you lose and you’re almost asking to be fleeced.

As for a cover, you should be able to make one out of speaker cloth. I did that years ago when I wanted to replace the original beige cloth to black. But that was a real walnut veneer box and I made some wood trim to finish it off. Even my humble self will admit it looked better than the original when I was done. None other than Mrs. j told me that too. So, it must have been true.

Let us know how that goes.

I agree. The guy who had the booth didn't seem to have this in his wheelhouse of knowledge. And frankly, if I hadn't spotted it, I think he would have kept pushing it further into a corner where no one would ever see it, again. As mentioned, it was behind some '60s era wooden school desks. He had some antique "pie saves" and old kitchen utensils in his booth, too. His inventory was all antiques, except for the subwoofer.

The subwoofer was way out of place. All he really knew was it was a a speaker..and, that he wasn't certain of its operation.

This was outside of his purview, for sure.

It could have been a brick. So, I took a chance, too. I figured if nothing else, I could use the box and put my own driver and amp in it. Pleasantly surprised.

We are thinking alike. Took measurements and am thinking of making a wood square with pegs. I can cover the square with cloth and staple it to the wood.

exciting day here today. for the first time in 2025 it broke 45 so I saved the car wash cost (and regretted paying it yesterday on the other car!) and put the truck on the driveway and hosed it down, and got the hose underneath to spray off the underside as best as I could. Pretty sure I did a good job overall. At least the latest little bit of salt that got on it has been addressed.

eventually it needs to get nice out so I can get both of them fully washed and cleaned inside, and waxed. That will be a long day!

Had a VTF2 for a good long while, until the plate amp fizzled out. HSU said they couldn't source replacements any more. So, I stripped the driver out of it and it's sitting in my AV parts bin closest waiting for me to find a use for it. They make good subs.

Never have heard of Amazon driver's asking for assistance. Interesting.

My Klipsch Fortes in my 2-channel system were actually delivered on a pallet. Trying to remember who the carrier was. But, it came as part of a semi delivery (DHL...maybe?). The driver said he was only supposed to deliver it to the driveway. He was a sphincter about it as he used a freight/floor jack to move it on to the truck's power ramp. But, he wouldn't use the jack to at least get the pallet to my garage. I even offered him a $20 bill for 3 mins of him rolling a jack. Nope!

I unpacked everything at the curb of my street and carried the speakers in with the help of a neighbor.

If there were any karma in the whole deal, I live on a small cul-de-sac. Him trying to turn a semi around on the cul-de-sac was a lengthy and comical sight.

Way over due on cleaning both vehicles. Been over a year that I had them both detailed here at the house. The days of me doing it myself are long gone, it's just too much for my body to handle. No one told me that getting older would have so many health issues. So many things I can no longer do & washing/waxing the vehicles is definitely one of those things. But after almost 11 full years, my Golf still shines like new! Get compliments all the time but must admit, it does shine.

my saturday project (I think the wildly fluctuation temperatures these days will work out, it seems to be a high of 45 one day, 30 the next) is to clean up my daughter's new CX-50. I told her not to buy it before winter was over! pretty sure it is filthy and salty already. So will need to check out the condition underneath and hopefully be able to do it all in the driveway. A nice wash and undercarriage spray off, then clean up the inside so I can install the all weather mats it should have come with so I picked up a set at my local dealer for her. Maybe she will let me take it for a ride too!

Can we get back to dishwashers briefly?
The inside of the dishwasher is stainless steel, and it gets some oily patches on it.....it doesn't shine like stainless steel should in spots.
I have tried various cleaners and none of them do a great job. Some spots stay cloudy.

On the dishwasher back home we purchased it and about 3 days later MrsD100 put a yogurt dish in the DW and it dripped on the stainless door....and left some kind of mark that won't come out.

They guaranteed no rain in the Tampa area for at least one week, so I went through the car wash yesterday. Today I drove out to go to pickleball and the sprinklers were overflowing from the median, the road was covered in water and splashed all over my just washed car......

If you don't want to buy a commercial dishwasher cleaner, try an old trick; fill the detergent cup with tang and run the dishwasher on a long or tough soil cycle.

Thanks....I had no idea they had such products. I got a stainless steel cleaner to use inside dishwashers. The Tang would be worth a try but it probably costs the same as the cleaner....then I'd have to drink the rest........

Perfect, seems even better....I just pop it in, run the dishwasher, and it does all the work. Also 3200 reviews, 41/2 stars. I don't have to actual do the cleaning....it's like getting the guy to do it for me....for $5.

I didn't even buy the brand name Tang. I saw the Walmart brand of citric acid based drink next to it much, much cheaper and I just picked it up. Worked fine.

I'm really vain, but not vain enough to care about whether the stainless steel inside of my dishwasher is streaked (the outside, of course, needs to be pretty, just not the inside)...

Speaking of dishwashers, anyone else remember the dark ages around 2010? Multiple states banned the use of phosphates in dishwasher detergents (causing most manufacturers to get rid of them in all 50 states to simplify production). Suddenly, everyone's dishwasher stopped cleaning dishes. The solutions at the time included adding Lemi-Shine citric acid to each load (along with the detergent), buying Bubble Bandit off of Amazon (as suggested by the name, it still had phosphates), or buying more expensive detergent packs. I eventually settled on buying the cheapest packs that would get the job done (which were often the cheapest packs, period) and wrote off the liquids and powders. Imagine my surprise when I recently saw Consumer Reports declare many of the current liquid detergents to be decent. I tried a bottle of Cascade Complete, and it cleans my dishes very well, filling the detergent tub about 1/3 full. Next, I'm trying the Aldi version. At that dosage level, even the Cascade is far less expensive than the cheapest detergent packs ($1.25Tree's 10-pack or Costco brand). I guess the newer dishwashers and the newer detergent chemistry have worked around this issue, but it was annoying for a long time. Gee, I wonder why nobody told us we could go back to using the cheaper liquid detergents?

for some reason my wife bought a large bottle of liquid dishwasher liquid, after many years of using pods just fine. I do the dishes, and those are easy. I have to drag out the owners manual to figure out what place to put liquid it, and how much, and probably make a mess doing it. Not sure if we are saving money (that $1 per week is really going to make or break us!). Not looking forward to it though.

By the time you spill half the liquid all over the place it probably costs more. Kirkland pods are pretty cheap and work fine.

I haven’t used anything but a pod in 4 different dishwashers spanning nearly 20 years.

To be honest I didn’t even know they made anything else but the pods. I order it from Amazon (along with dish soap and cleaning stuff) so never go down that aisle.

I also must be blessed with great water here in South Jersey as my dishwasher and washing machine are always glistening inside and never require cleaning.

I do use an Affresh tablet in the washing machine to clean the parts you can’t see every so often. If I don’t have that I throw a cup of bleach in there on the cleaning cycle.

With 5 of us and the volume of cooking I couldn’t imagine not having one.

If I ever redo the kitchen I’d like to keep a standard dishwasher and then add one of those drawer ones for glasses or for a quick wash

I got my first dishwasher after the initial kitchen remodel was done in 2002. I started out using Cascade powder and then after a few years switched to a liquid in a jug. I caught onto the pods about 10 years ago and they seem to work OK though I sometimes get some blue residue stuck inside the detergent door depending on what brand I buy. I sometimes end up with pods that are made in two pieces that are a tight fit in there.

The Cascade Dishwasher Cleaner tablets worked well. It got rid of the blotchy spots on the stainless steel door, and it looks sparkly and clean inside.
I didn't know they even had such things until roadburner suggested it......I thought it got cleaned when it was doing dishes anyway.

I just looked up the components of Cascade dishwasher cleaner tablets. I found this:
Amylase Enzyme, Benzisothiazolinone, Calcium Chloride, Citric Acid, Colorants, Copolymer of Acrylic Maleic and Sulphonic Acids, Fragrances, PEG/PPG/Propylheptyl Ether, Sodium Benzoate, Sodium Bicarbonate, Sodium Silicate, Subtilisin, Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate, Water, Xanthan Gum.

I notice that citric acid is inn there listen 4th in order of quantity and above the maleic and sulphonic acids which probably are there as a buffer to work with the citric acid?

Amylase is there to break starches into sugars. Probably to attack common residuals on the inside of the washer.

Benzisothiazolinone is a preservative and antimicrobial. To keep the pellet fresh? And kill of bacteria in dishwasher leftover goop?

The other items are likely just filler to be able to make a cake of product.

So I see why just a high citric acid fruity drink would work to clean dishwashers. A longtime radio talk guy in Detroit who took calls on repairing home appliances said to use Tang (citric acid drink) and clean your dishwasher.

Joe also said to use white vinegar in a full clothes washer to remove build up of detergent on the side of the tub that's around the inner spinning tub.

I (and likely many others) use a vinegar and water solution to de-scale my coffeemaker when it indicates that is due. Speaking of kitchen things, some WIP pics. Progress this week included all plumbing, most wiring and lighting, delivery of cabinets (not all shown here), flooring install of some nice fake limestone LVP, and setup of temporary arrangements with the old dishwasher , etc for the next week or so. The finished cabinet doors and trim panels in final colors should happen next week along with upper cabinets and vented microwave over the stove. Lucy the cat had to insert herself into the picture as she inspected the work.
