    Carman,

Subaru is advertising a 2002 Forester L for $268 a month for 39 months with 12,000 miles/yr with only $1200 down (Plus tax, title and registration) in New Jersey.

The problem is that this is a manual transmission and my wife and I need an automatic.

So, what lease support is Subaru providing on this car and what is the money factor and residual. Will this support be extended to a model with automatic transmission or other options?

and last, in your opinion, how much extra should the automatic transmission cost per month (I think it is an $800 option).

    Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the response re GM truck leases.

Yes, I was referring to the vehicles you described.

To clarify my question with regard to the September lease, that would be for the 2003 vehicles.

I believe the residuals tend to drop over the course of the model year. Since we are past the mid-point for the 2002 models, I am assuming that the residuals are correpondingly lower.

It is my understanding that the residuals are at their highest level when new models are introduced. I am surprised at the 51% residual on these vehicles. I would have expected them to be strong in the resale market and support stronger residuals.

Can you provide similar info for the Ford Crewcabs, F-150 and F-250 please.

It may be that the ability to purchase GM vehicles with the employee discount may not be as attractive as leasing a Ford given the parsimonious GM posture with regard to lease support.

    Thank you

Hey dtwleungnyc. Audi's current lease program varies by region, so before I can give you an idea of what their current lease money factors should be like I will need you to tell me what state you live in. In the meantime, I can answer your BMW question for you. If you were to lease a 2002 525i wagon this month through BMW Financial Services for 3 years with 15,000 miles per, their base lease money factor and residual value should be .00220 and 59%, respectively. Their 12,000 miles per year residual value for this term would increase to 61%. As soon as you give me the additional information I will fill you in on Audi's current program.

Thanks for the additional information, kurb. According to my calculations, if you were to lease a 2002 Nissan Pathfinder LE 4WD (MSRP: $34,603 / Cap Cost: $31,968) through Nissan Motor Acceptance Corp. this month for 3 years with 15,000 miles per, your zero down, pre-tax monthly lease payment would be around $481. The 39 month payment for an otherwise identical lease would drop to around $454 or so. Looking at the payments that you were quoted versus my calculations, it appears to me as though the dealership that you are working with is padding your deal somewhere. It is very likely that they are marking up your truck's lease money factor in an effort to bake a little more profit into your deal.

Hi soylent. I do not believe that Toyota is providing any sort of support on the 2002 Highlander in any of its regions at this time. If this is the case and you were to lease one through Toyota Financial Services, you would have to use their standard lease money factors. The last time that I heard, their standard lease factor was .00280 for all terms. The corresponding residual values for a 2002 Highlander Limited 2WD should currently be 55% for 36 months and 48% for 48 months.

Hi gtp9. Let's try to calculate a sample lease payment for you on this car. If you were to lease a 2003 Acura TL Type S with Navigation (MSRP: $33,980 / Cap Cost: $33,260) through American Honda Finance Corp. in April for
3 years with 12,000 miles per, your zero down, pre-tax monthly lease payment would be around $452. If you were to put $2,500 down on this car, it would reduce the monthly payment to around $376. Of course, these payment estimates don't take any of your negative equity into account. If you are rolling any negative equity into your lease, then your payments would be higher.

I was wondering how big of a difference the presence of absence of an automatic transmission makes on the residual value of a Volkswagen Passat?

I've been playing around a bit with the lease calculator at leasecompare.com, and I've noticed that even if I leave the selling price and down payment numbers the same, the monthly payment ends up changing quite drastically depending on whether or not I check the "automatic transmission" box.

I'd really rather have a manual transmission, but if it's going to significantly lower the residual value of the Passat, then I might stick with the Tiptronic (bad pun intended).

    Carman,

Well, after posting messages on this board for a least a year asking about different leases, and not having heard back from you about the Forester lease, we went and leased one last night(we will pick it up monday).

We leased a Forester S (instead of the L). We agreed to a 39 month lease with 12000 miles/yr. The MSRP is about $24,800 and we are paying $2000 cash out of pocket and $319 per month.

Could you tell me if we got a good deal?

    Thanks

    Hi Joe,

If you provide more info. others on this board may be able to give some insight into your deal. What was the capitalized cost(the agreed to price), the money factor, the residual amount, and the monthly payment (with or without tax, tax rate?). Only Car_Man has the current lease rates, but we may be able to help decipher your deal with more information. I don't think that Car_Man answers questions on the weekends-but I may be mistaken.

You're welcome, delrick. As far as the lease program on the 2002 Ford F-Series goes, you are going to find that their program is not any better than GM's. Please keep in mind that their lease rates may vary slightly on this model depending upon the part of the country that you are in. In most areas if you were to lease a 2002 Ford F-Series Light Duty Pickup through Ford Motor Credit for 3 years their base lease rate should be 7.75%. The lease rate on F-Series Super Duty trucks increases to 9.5%. Ford breaks down the residual values for the F-Series into many different trim levels. So in order for me to provide you with accurate residual value information, I am going to need you to be as specific as possible about the truck that you are interested in, i.e. is it 2WD or 4WD, is it an XL or XLT, etc... Once I have this additional information I will be able to help you out.

Hello petepie1. I would be more than happy to give you an idea of what the lease programs should be like on these models at this time. If you were to lease a 2002 Volvo S60 2.4T (non-AWD) through Volvo Finance this month for 39 months and with 12,000 miles per year, their base lease money factor and residual value should be .00064 and 55%, respectively. I do not believe that Volvo is providing any sort of lease support on 30 month leases of this model right now. So if you were to lease one through Volvo Finance using for 30 months, you probably would have to use their standard lease money factors. Volvo's standard factors vary depending upon what part of the country you are in, but right now they should be around .00340 or so. The 30 month, 12,000 miles per year residual value for this car should be 59%.

Hi arcade. You certainly asked a very general question. OK let's see, in terms of bang for the buck I think that Saabs are always up there. Although their styling is love it or hate it (I personally lean towards the latter) Saab is had to beat in terms of the amount of lease support that they have available on their cars. You can get a fairly expensive Saab for a reasonable monthly lease payment. Audi also has been providing some very attractive lease money factors on its cars lately (they are nowhere near what Saab is providing though). Honda has a nice lease on the Accord right now. Jaguar has got some outstanding lease programs on the X- and S-Type at this time. Volvo and VW have decent April lease programs as well. Is there any specific type of vehicle that you are interested in getting? Perhaps I can provide you with some more specific information that you would find more helpful.

Nice choice in cars, lama1. I got an opportunity to spend some quality time with the 2003 Infiniti G35 at the NY Auto Show press days recently and I was extremely impressed with it. It sure is light years ahead of the G20. Infiniti is going to introduce a Coupe version of the G35 later on this year that is beautiful as well. As far as the lease program for this car goes, as one might expect Infiniti is not really providing any sort of support on it at this time. So if you were to lease a 2003 G35 with leather through Infiniti Financial Services during the month of April for 3 years with 15,000 miles per their base lease money factor and residual value should be .00260 and 54%. The 12,000 miles per year residual value for this car would increase to 55%.

Thanks for the info on a general question, Car_man. Actually, I am looking at the Saab 9-3. It seems that Saab has some good deals out there, but I'm going to wait until May when my current lease runs out. I'm assuming the deals will get better, not worse. Is that a good assumption?
You mentioned Audi having good deals, what do are the current numbers on the A4 and MDX in Virginia?

Hi oceanbug. Although the type of transmission that a vehicle has sometimes does have an effect upon its residual values, the residuals for the Volkswagen Passat are currently the same regardless of whether it has a manual or an automatic transmission. It sounds to me as though the Web site that you visited is not using Volkswagen's actual lease program to calculate your monthly lease payments. Other than the fact that the type of transmission that you choose would alter your vehicle's price, it should not effect its lease payment. Nice pun by the way ;).

Hi again Joe. I am sorry that I did not get back to you in time. I still haven't had an opportunity to take a close look at Subaru's current lease program for the Forester yet. Even though you did not post all of the information that is necessary to analyze your deal thoroughly, the payment that you were quoted looks to be in line with what others are paying to lease similar Foresters and it appears to me as though you did just fine in your negotiations for your new vehicle. Enjoy!

Hey Gary. Although consumers were able to apply General Motors' $2,002 bonus cash towards leased vehicles when it was first introduced, I am sorry to say that is no longer the case. Let's play with some numbers and see what sort of monthly lease payment you should be able to get on this truck. If you were to lease a 2002 GMC Yukon XL 4WD (MSRP: $45,557 / Cap Cost: $40,541) through General Motors Acceptance Corp. this month for 3 years with 15,000 miles per, your zero down, pre-tax monthly lease payment should be right around $631 or so.

Thanks for the additional information, dtwleungnyc. I suppose that I should have been able to guess where you live by the "nyc" at the end of your i.d., but better safe than sorry. OK if you were to lease a 2002 Audi A6 3.0 Avant through Audi Financial Services this month for 3 years with 15,000 miles per, their base lease money factor and residual value in your area should be .00130 and 54%. The 12,000 miles per year residual value for this term would increase to 56%.

Arcade, you certainly have chosen a great car to lease. Lease deals don't get much better than they are on Saabs. It is hard for me to imagine Saab providing any more lease support on its vehicles than it already is, but I also don't envision them reducing their support any time in the near future either. If I had to guess, I would say that their lease program in May will be very similar to the one that they are running right now. I would be more than happy to give you an idea of what Audi's lease program for the A4 is like in your area this month, but in order for me to do so, I am going to need some additional information from you first. What version of the A4 are you interested in, the A4 1.8T Avant, A4 1.8T Sedan 2WD, A4 1.8T Sedan quattro, A4 3.0L Avant, A4 3.0L Sedan 2WD, or A4 3.0L Sedan quattro? Once I have this piece of information, along with the length of lease that you are interested in and the number of miles per year that you want to be able to drive without penalty I will post the information that you're looking for. Talk to you soon.

Car_man, thanks for the reply. Another quick question, if you can help.

This past weekend, I purchased and downloaded the LeaseWizard software recommended in one of the leasing articles in the Edmunds Finance & Leasing Center. It's actually a lot of fun playing around with the numbers.

My question is, do you know what kind of money factor VW Credit is currently offering on a 36-month, 12,000 mile per year Passat GLS lease in the Phoenix, Arizona area (zip is 85225, if you need it)? EDIT - Additional Question: Would a lease through VW Credit be described as subvented? And is it possible that another company would be able to offer a better deal than VW Credit?

(The vehicle configuration I'm hoping for, if you need to know, is a 2002 Passat GLS 1.8T manual, with the leather, luxury, homelink, and Monsoon packages... and good luck to me in finding a Passat with the leather and luxury packages WITHOUT an automatic.) ::mumble::

My credit should be no problem. I just would love to know what kind of money factor I can reasonably expect, to see some more realistic figures in the LeaseWizard software. :)

You're welcome, Gary. The Yukon looked to be a bit on the expensive side to me too. GM's lease program has never been that great on it. Also, I am not surprised that dealers are trying to get a premium for the MDX. Most people have done a good job negotiating when they are able to get one for full MSRP without any additional profit or dealer-installed options thrown in.

No problem, oceanbug. In answer to your specific question about VW's lease program, if you were to lease a 2002 Volkswagen Passat GLS 4-cylinder Sedan through Volkswagen Credit this month for 3 years with 12,000 miles per their base lease money factor and residual value should be .00185 and 57%, respectively. VW Credit's current standard lease money factor for the Passat for this term is .00255. The .00185 money factor is equivalent to an interest rate of right around 4.4%, so I definitely would consider it supported.

    Carman,

Are there different lease programs for different trim levels of the Explorer? I am interested in a 36 month / 36,000 mile lease and either the XLT or XLS models with the V6 engine.
Also, what are the lease programs for the Honda Accord EX V6 Coupe and Sedan? Same terms (36/36,000) as above.

    Thanks!

Hey shaker58. Let's take a look at some numbers and see what we come up with. If your friend were to lease a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD (MSRP: $28,350 / Cap Cost: $26,500 TMV - $2,500 lease cash - $1,000 owner loyalty cash) in the NY area this month for 3 years with 12,000 miles per, the zero down, pre-tax monthly lease payment should be around $376. As you can see, I took DaimlerChrysler's $2,500 lease cash and $1,000 owner loyalty cash into account when calculating this truck's payment.

Hoss99, it is true that certain lending institutions do indeed have rules about how much insurance coverage their lessees must carry on their vehicles. Here is Ford Motor Credit's policy on vehicle insurance: "You must insure the Vehicle during this lease. This insurance must be acceptable to Ford Credit and protect You and Holder with a)comprehensive fire and theft insurance with a maximum deductible amount of $1,000; and b) collision and upset insurance with a maximum deductible of $1,000; and c)automobile liability insurance with minimum limits for bodily injury or death of $10,000 for any one person and $20,000 for any one accident, and $5,000 for property damage...." You can check out an actual copy of Ford Motor Credit's lease contract by clicking on the following link: Ford lease contract.

Hi Ben. Ford's lease rates for the Explorer only vary depending upon whether you are interested in the 2-Door or 4-Door version of this truck, but their residual values for it vary even more depending upon the trim level. Please keep in mind that Ford Motor Credit's exact lease rates for this particular vehicle may vary slightly depending upon what part of the country you are in. If you were to lease a 2002 Ford Explorer XLT 4-Door 4WD this month through Ford Motor Credit, their 3 year 12,000 miles per lease rate and residual value should be around 0.25% and 41%, respectively. The lease rate for the 2002 Explorer XLS 4-Door 4WD would be exactly the same, but the residual value would be 40%.

As far as the Honda Accord goes, if you were to lease a 2002 Accord EX Coupe or Sedan through American Honda Finance Corp. this month for 3 years with 12,000 miles per, their base lease money factor and residual value should be .00125 and 58%, respectively.

I just learned about Mulitple Security Deposit lease option to lower the lease rate since each multiple lowers the leasing factor by a 10th. Can you tell me if I do this am I pay interest on the full amount borrowed or just the difference between the borrowed amount and the total security deposit? Is a MSD lease a good thing to do? What is the down side? Thanks

several dozen posts back, I thought I saw you mention that VW is doing some sort of lease loyalty program.

Is this true? If so, can you fill us in with the details? I've got a VW lease that terminates in Nov/Dec and wonder if it might be advantageous to exit early (we've got a New Beetle leased now; thinking of replacing it with a Passat).

Any information you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

I would like to know if the vehicle is "totaled", how much, if any of the MSD do you get back. If you don't get any of it back, you could potentially be out several thousands!
