Mercury Sable Problems

Now they won't come on at all. Highs and parking lights work OK, NO LOWSs. Anyone hear of this or know how to fix (I can probably do it myself, but fooling with steering column-electrical is scaring me). I am reluctant to take it to a mechanic for a $$$$$$ repair bill.
Any feedback or help would be appreciated.
Sable going strong at 116K but thinking of a new vehicle soon.
Question is are ABS brakes standard on this model?
According to Edmunds the LS Premium northeast package lists ABS as standard (no charge). However, reading the sticker we didn't see the ABS system listed. Also, any comments on the fact that the LS premium comes with rear drum brakes??
Thanks
Jerry
Since this conference focuses on maintenance and repair issues, the best place to ask that question would be in our Mercury Sable topic over in the Sedans Conference. You can just click on that link to go there.
Good luck.

The car definitely performs much more anemically now. At highway speeds, the accelerator has little effect and when the car finally decides to downshift, all passengers are treated to a round of whiplash. Then, the car quickly upshifts again and refuses to accelerate further. I am not being picky - this is really bad.
I am very angry. I purchased this car a few months ago because I liked the way it performed. It is simply not the car I purchased any more. This could legitimately be a bait-and-switch complaint. My plea - has anybody found a cure from Ford for this yet?? If not, this should escalate further.
[Perhaps the PCM itself wasn't designed with adequate gradation in progammability for dealers to attain satisfactory adjustments of the PCM?]
If the current repair/re-programming situation doesn't change -- and customers are left basically with "a car they didn't buy" -- might there be a risk that the now-reduced-performance "repaired" vehicles could become relegated to "lemon" status? Yes, it's early -- and I haven't seen anyone post a response from Ford regarding the unsatisfactoriness of their recall "repair" -- but assuming the current "repair" situation doesn't change, what status could be ascribed to these "fixed" vehicles? What might Ford be reasonably expected to offer to rectify the matter for owners who bought an apparently once-decently-performing vehicle?
From consistency of feedback reports, it sure seems the recall-repaired Duratec 2000 Sables have been converted to a totally different vehicle than the one customers purchased (customers who were likely influenced by reviewers' articles when the car was in its original, "unfixed" state).
How long before the recall notice appears in the NHTSA database? Is there a period of time within which manufacturers are required to report the recall to that organization? The "May Recalls" were listed as of July 13. I haven't seen Ford's April recall notice listed yet.
Are dealers obligated to perform the "repair" on *any* of the Duratec vehicles they get their hands on, even if the owner says "No, don't do it!"? I'm recalling back to the person who took in his car for an oil change and the dealer automatically "repaired" it without his knowledge and consent.
An '87 Mercury Sable owner (...shopping...but not for a 2000 Duratec Sable/Taurus any longer)
Good Luck!

( Dk. Titanium Clearcoat ) and I was wondering what ever happened with the issue. I just noticed the roof and trunk lid of my 89 SABLE showing signs of oxidation. I realize, as someone mentioned in a subsequent note, that the '91 SABLE is up in age but I remember paint lasting alot longer than that .... especially if it has been cared for. My 89 SABLE is Lt. Titanium Clearcoat. The car is in very good condition aside from the paint oxidation. Just curious!

Is there any way to tell if the cars in stock have been fixed? Is there a fix?
I expect that they have all had the recall repair, but since I've never driven one, how can I know if the car is running the way it's supposed to?
system has crapped-out. I can't lock-up the car
without the alarm system activating (horn beeps
and headlights flash). This happens about 80% of the time.
I read the owner's manual and all it says about
deactivating the alarm is to unlock the car -- not
a good idea if you're parked in the mall parking
lot!
Anyway, does anybody know (1) how to lock the car
but turn the alarm off? or (2)(better yet) how to
trouble-shoot this problem or a likely fix?
HELP !!!
I never use an alarm, in fact I leave the car wide open. I have enough headaches in my life to have to deal with a car alarm. People are so ridicuolus with their car alarms, I see them all the time putting their car alarm while parked right in front of a starbucks, for example!
Come on people, wake up! Let em steal it if they want it! Who cares!!
No offense to you guy!
One dealership did say that it didn't drive right and that it was consuming more fuel than it should. However they did not know what to do to fix it since the reprogramming is all computerized and set by Ford. They even called the Ford hotline to no avail. I am very frustrated to say the least. I am glad to know that other people are having the same problem, because like the others the dealerships all act as if my car is the only one that has the problem.
Any further information would be apprecitiated.
instrument panel. Its an exclamationt point lit up. The car became sluggish and the transmission,
at times, seemed to have trouble engaging gears.
Much later the check engine light came on. At times the car rode well and at other times the
engine would not respond. The lights all work
and so did the alarm system. However I noticed that the doors did not lock themselves automatically as usual. Radio, wipers and horn
worked also. The speedometer did not operate, but fuel gauge and tachometer seemed to function normally.
This car is a 2000 model which I purchased four months ago. I lost confidence in it. I should kick
myself for buying Ford. Especially after the treatment I received at the dealership and later
with Ford customer service.
It took them a day to get back to me and the problem was that a rodent (squirrel, mouse, rat,
etc.) chewed about 12 wires in the engine compartment. This made the car malfunction. The
repair was not covered by the manufacturers warranty because it was damage done. It cost me
painful $$$$$$$$$$$$$.
Today I sprayed a repelant and put two glue traps
by the tires. Hopefully the animal or animals if
not repelled will walk on the glue and die.
A very upsetting ordeal no doubt. I thought it was
Fords building a mistake but I overreacted. This
Merc. station wagon is a nice one.
The engine is strong and generally runs ok except for 2 problems.
After it's warm and running, there is a fuel odor that comes into the cabin from the vents, when the fan or a/c is on.
Also the car jerks quite often before the trans goes in to the next gear. Usually around 30 mph,, 43 mph, and 53mph roughly.
Anybody know what's wrong and how to fix?
Question for you though. Did you have a major coolant leak, about six months before this? I did, and I think I had coolant in the engine, that will kill the main bearing.
Probably the best place for you to find this kind of information is over in our Sedans conference. Try this topic:
Mercury Sable (Topic #3401) in Sedans.
Good luck.

Oh yeah, my '86 Olds is still parked in the same place, and I will call 1-800-2-donate and they can have it.(the lot kid gave me a ride home).
After reading here about the PCM problems, I will call first thing Mon. morning and find out what procedures should be taken.
I thank the posters here for keeping a tenacious attitude and staying on top of any problems. Just look at the Firestone/Ford mess right now. Stay vigilant.
Please refer to my earlier post Mercury Sable breakdown above.
Re: a rodent chewing through wires, according to a Ford service dept that fixed my car. They claimed that this damage is not covered by warranty so it cost me quite a bit of money.
These unexposed cables seem to me to be a flaw in design and not just damage. In other words, a problem waiting to happen.

How do I remove the lens ? Do I have to remove the Radio ? I tried removing the 2 screws above the dashboard lens and the panel is still hard to remove, I was suspecting the there is a screw inside the Radio Assembly to remove the panel below (right) it and how do I remove the panel on the Headlight switch area (left)?
It can go days without happening or it can happen every time I drive. It doesn't matter if I am using the turn signal, just cleaned the windshield or haven't touched the wipers at all. Sometimes it happens when sitting still or when I am driving.
If you have had this problem please let me know. I have the car almost a year and this just started about 3 weeks ago.
Regards,
Pete
into it. Ill report back.
As a matter of fact Ive seen a squirrel where I park climbing on tires and getting into engine
compartments of other cars.
Ive been using a repellent which I spray on tires.
I will call my insurance co. asap though.
Thanks again
No engine leaks, but the bearings are toast.
Definately our last Ford vehicle. We are training our kids, friends and relatives too. If Toyota can build 150K cars in the USA, there's only one reason that Ford doesn't. They don't want to.
