I will tell you, when I go to a restaurant that has the credit card fee it doesn’t bother me to pay it when I use my card. However, I only tip the server on the cash price of the total bill (including tax), not the credit card price.

    ————————————————
I thought about doing that but that hurts the server not the owner. The only way is to let the owner know you don’t like their policy and not frequent that place as often. I’ve been doing that with the Mexican restaurant that I’ve gone to for years. Coincidentally, a new Mexican restaurant just opened closer to me, it’s an established name about 7 miles from me. I’ve heard the food is good but I’ve never eaten there. I’m curious what their policy is.

a number of places around here started doing the cash vs. credit price, and just not the 2 options on the bill. can't recall though which one is the main one they show.

I also have a big dislike of delivery. if we are getting takeout, I go pick it up. At least I know it is getting back quick since I get there early before it is ready. I used doordash once when my boss sent a gift card as a perk (since us remote people didn't get to attend a lunch event in the office).

generally will get pizza, and sometimes chinese food. anything else we either go out (to get out of the house) or make it ourselves.

Up here in my part of Kanada, about 15 years ago govt banned stores from providing free plastic film carry bags. Bad for the environment, dontcha know? Except that about 45 minutes from where I am there was a thriving business that took all the plastic film they could get their hands on and turned it into composite decking products. They were doing great. About a year after the ban when the pipeline dried up they went out of business.

The stores could still give you a paper sack but they charged you for those, or could sell you a reusable bag for $1. Meanwhile the municipality requires you to recycle your paper, boxboard and plastic or glass containers, along with cans, but separate them into their own plastic film bags for pickup. Go figure.

I have everything on AutoPay via ACH except for the utilities for both houses and the credit cards.

I would have the utilities too, but a good friend of mine had a billing error on his gas bill and they took $8000 out of his checking .... that wouldn't be a good day.

That is the one thing that makes me not want to do autopay. Of course the old fashioned written check has its downside too. This month I get a call from the cable company stating we didn’t pay our bill. I told them the check number and when it was mailed but they claim they never got it. I went in their payment line and paid it with my credit card. A few days later we get a letter from them that included our check all ripped to shreds. Obviously it had gotten caught in machinery somewhere along the line and was chewed up.

My only question was, did the post office destroy it but still deliver it or did the cable company screw up at their end. Regardless, if they had the destroyed check why did the call us up and claim they never received it?

    "We're further than that"

    Then it hit me.

"You mean Delaware the State? Not Delaware the city in OH?"

    "Yes sir""

    "Yeah...well...that's a LOT farther away"

"Sir, let me get back to you"

    LOL!

So what would an in person inspection do that a photo wouldn’t? Would their examiner look and then conclude “yep, that’s damage from our gravel alright, pay the man”.

I’m afraid to use one of those sleazy stand alone ATMs. Only at the bank to get cash.

The easier way is on discover. For some reason you can use that like an atm with no fees. So I use it at the supermarket and it always asks if I want cash back so if I need a little just get $40 back when I am paying.

Being an old geezer that always carries cash means I don’t really worry about cash only places.

I use cash exclusively except for big ticket items where it would be inconvenient.

We go for coffee after tennis in Florida at an upscale place. A coffee is $4.50 and one day one of the guys noticed they add 4% for a credit card charge. So now I tip them 15% instead of 20%.

.10 extra for every bag if you forgot to bring your bags with you. In effect, they forced the stores to go from giving a discount to charging extra.
Bad optics. I hate this ten cent fee more than any other.

Aldi has always charged for bags, AFAIK, and I still have a couple of their older, fairly-thick plastic bags, which were $0.10 each. They do eventually start to get holes in them, and that's when I get rid of them, but they hold up pretty well, given the price. They still offer paper bags around that same price point, but the new plastic bags are $1 (IIRC) and are much sturdier.

They seem to be the cheapest on generic diet cola (which I drink one of per day), and zero calorie flavored soda water (which I drink several of per day).

@jmonroe1 - I definitely have a pizza hierarchy. For cheap frozen pizzas, Tombstone is my go-to. For fast and cheap carryout or delivery, there's a Jet's with Detroit-style deep dish nearby. For upscale pizza, Coals Artisan Pizza is outstanding, and there's also a local Cajun-inspired restaurant with good pizzas. Pizza Hut is good greasy hangover food, although sometimes I randomly crave their cheese sticks regardless.

I don't tip on price at all anymore. I figure if I am at a restaurant for an hour and took up about five minutes of a server's time, why would I give them a huge tip just because the food was expensive? Ten dollars is plenty, and if that doesn't work out to some generous percentage, then I guess they have their priorities mixed up: They just got an extra ten dollars to take an order and drop off the food at the table!

My wife was disappointed with me last weekend because we paid a low three-figure bill at a local restaurant with middling food quality (but a really good waiter); she told me to "give her a really good tip." So, I gave her a $20 tip! Afterward, my wife is doing the math in her head, and says, "That was only like 15%." I said, "Good lord. It was $20! We probably doubled her pay that hour, and that was a bad tip?"

@xwex - I try not to calculate tips based on the amount of time dedicated to my service because I assume the server is doing a lot of prep/cleanup work outside of serving tables, which is also being paid at tipped minimum wage (regardless of any law to the contrary).

Many years ago I tried to file a claim against a trucking company for dumping a rock my way on the highway and chipping my windshield, and their MO was to say it's a road hazard 100% of the time. That means it's not their fault and you have to suck it up.

I agree it’s a road hazard but more often than not it’s a hazard caused by junk that wasn’t tied down and bounced off onto the road. I call that “cause and effect”. But, until you can prove a rock came off a particular truck you’re going to be told, “go pound sand”. Getting a video of the event may be the only way to prove it, which is almost never going to happen. So us motorists have to suck it up.

No plastic bags in Jersey either. It’s the dumbest piece of legislation ever.

The old plastic bags were put to good use emptying the litter box, small messes, lunch bags, bathroom trash can liners, etc.

Now we buy small trash bags for that use. We also get tons of the reusable ones from our food deliveries. I had so many I threw them away. I also won’t reuse them if they have had raw meat in them. Maybe that is “extra” but I won’t do it.

Recently I asked one of the couriers who brought my food order if they wanted the for their deliveries and they were very happy. Gave her about 50

Friday afternoon my rear passenger side tire was flat. I tried to fill it with air but it wouldn't take air.....must have been sliced. The tires have the same number of miles on them that they had when they were replaced. These Pirellis were much better than the Goodyear RFTs that were on the car originally.
They have to be replaced in pairs. If I buy 4 I get $200 off. One place had them in stock and if I brought the car in Saturday at 9:30 they would have me out by noon....with 4 new tires. They had 4 Michelin Pilot Sport S/As in stock, he says they rarely have 4 Michelins that size, as soon as they come in someone wants them. So, instead of fooling around and getting stuck somewhere or making plans to come in again one day I got 4 tires for $1200, and they ride beautiful....the Pirellis were good, maybe they get sloppy, but the Michelins are firm and solid feeling....I love them!
btw....if they have to order them you can't drive for 3 or 4 days....this way the fun never stops....I just keep going!!!!!!

Advice sought from the peanut gallery....

I have been cleaning out some tech I no longer use from my home office. Some of it (particularly Apple gear) has worth on the used market. These days, eBay has become nefarious for buyers who either don't pay, or use some sort of silly reason why the gear wasn't "as described", or sometimes just bid and disappear after winning the item.

So, I'm giving them a rest.

There are some places out there who offer decent money for Apple gear. The catch is, you have to send it to them before you get paid. There's a level of trust there, even though many of them post glowing reviews (many times of dubious origins) on their WEB sites.

One of these places, "Jay Brokers", seemed to be legit. I sent them a pair of AirPod Max headphones. These days, I use "in ear" AirPod Pros and have not used the over ear Max headphones since I quit traveling all the time.

Price they offered was decent. We agreed on the price. I had assumed they'd send me a check, like other places do who buy tech on line.

Nope! These guys said they want to do a direct deposit to my checking account, and they claim in order to prove my identity, they'd need my DOB, last four digits of my SS#, my address, my checking account # and my routing #. Frankly, with all that information, you could dive into my checking and savings with little effort.

I balked at that. And, said I'd accept a check. They said they don't do checks. Don't buy that, at all.

But OK. We're at an impasse. I told them to send the headphones back to me. My hope is that they will.

Am I being unreasonable? They sure acted like I was.

The parking lot at assisted/long term living where dad is. White vehicles anyone? The facility is called White Oak, really.

Great place to find low mile gently used cars although you won’t find many exciting models.

I went to the new “video teller” at my credit union the other day and they started asking me for all that information too, I just drove off.

I wouldn’t have given them any of that info either. Just curious, how much are you out if they steal them?

That’s worth finding a way to get them to return your hardware. If they balk maybe you can offer to pay the return shipping costs. Of course giving them a bad review on one of the sites that do that might be all you can do if they steal your stuff.

You will love having a charger in the garage. Ours was tricky so we definitely paid someone to install it. Major quality of life upgrade.

Which brings to light the most obvious of the several major issues with electric vehicles: if you don't own a home in which you can conveniently charge your vehicle, it's a whole 'nother world.

It’s not terrible. We had ours for 15 months without it. It’s just nicer to have it.

Lots of new apartment complexes are including charging stations in their parking; of course, that doesn't help if your complex is 10,20,30 years old.

as always, depends on individual situation and use case. I would think most people here think the Boxster is a fantastic car. But if you live up a logging road in snow country, it is basically useless and terrible to have.

you can use public charging. You don't have a gas pump in your garage do you? Tom just said they owned a full EV for 15 months without any home charging. That is a convenience, not a necessity.

Everyone has to run their own numbers, but if someone doesn't have access to cheap home, work, or public L2 charging, and is reliant on typical DC fast charging prices, their fuel costs are probably going to be lower on a gas or hybrid vehicle. (By way of example, there appears to be a new body style Model Y at the condos near my house, which don't have outside electrical connections or EV charging. That doesn't make sense to me unless they have access to a charger at work.)

Stopped at Bernheim Forest today. The parking lot closest to the visitors center was full, including the two EV charging spots, but when I went to the next closest parking lot, I discovered they had installed four more EV chargers, none of which were occupied. I went from about 78% to 91% while parked there.

Even public charging is cheaper than gas here. But a lot of people do have access to L2 chargers at work. Nor us —we’re retired.
