My sister had a Gen 2 Prius. She told me it wouldn't run if you ran out of fuel.

The white Galaxie at lower left might be a 61? And the white two door post at right maybe a Chevy II or equivalent. Surprising lack of 60 Fords but the fintail makes up for it :)

LAX is pretty close to the ocean, so I'm gonna guess fog.

And, it's probably June ("June gloom", it's called)

I hope they take the "Happy Holidays" banners down before that B)

But yeah, "June gloom" is a thing in western WA/OR too.

Looking now, I guess that's right - for some reason I thought the horizontal C-pillar trim wasn't as tall on a 62, but it appears to be.

The blue car is a Pontiac..... I will guess 59 or 60 Catalina or Bonneville.

Could the Aqua car all the way down on the right be a 55 BelAir?

My money for the aqua car is on a 56. May be a 210, it doesn't look fancy enough to be a Bel Air.

In LA the car between the Porsche and Caddy looks like a mid 70s Fury. Car approaching at R maybe a LeBaron or similar? And an intermediate mid 70s GM coupe at far L.

Mismatched wheels on the Mustang made me wonder if that's because of the difficulty/expense of finding tires for TRX wheels (or maybe the front is just a spare).
  • explorerx4explorerx4 Member Posts: 21,130
That Must is probably an 82. Only the Pace Car Edition had that front bumper in 79.
Didn't realize you could still get the TRX wheels in 82 either.

From what I can find TRX was available through '84.

And both my 535is and M6 had those miserable tires as well.

Lots of replacement wheels sold for all those I bet. Saw that one can buy TRX look wheels in 16” rim size for those Mustangs. Those are about the only 3-spoke wheels I like.

I bought new E34 take-offs for the 535is and bought Borbet five spoke wheels for the M6.

I wonder what was the motivation for TRX wheels/tires, seeing as the idea was mostly hated in the market. Was it the metric fad that the US rejected? Someone goofed. AFAIK MB never had a TRX offering.

On that note, there is a wheel option seen in earlier Tempo/Topaz promo material that has a look that to me could be TRX, but might not be. I have never seen these on a Tempo aside from in period maker-provided material, and only once on a Topaz, a high spec coupe. I saw data online saying they existed from 84-87 but that might just parallel the first gen cars as I have only seen these wheels on 84 models. I really like these wheels for being a period design, as I do for the checkerboard Chevy wheels - I think they are cool in an 80s way:

Also seen in funny period commercials, the Jackie Stewart one amuses me for his careful choice in words:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4Ws_Bp7WYA

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7h47Dwm5I4

These cars are a guilty pleasure for me, and one that if I found an ultra low mileage twin to the car my mom had (same color combo and trim level) it would be hard not to buy it - I know results for these were typical for a period domestic in that either the car took a licking and kept on ticking or was in the junkyard before the odometer rolled over - ours was the former.

same with early versions of the Odyssey which came with the PAX system. Run flat tires, but some kind of special version that was a tire and wheel combo, that IIRC most tire shops could not handle. Dealer or nothing, and not all of them. Pretty sure that most owners just bought replacement wheels and normal tires at some point. Not even sure you could replace the tires now.

LAX 1964 per the source - anything with the Theme Building and those lights has an atmosphere, maybe of a future that was promised but didn't evolve as many expected, zooms well enough to ID several:

Blue Beetle (look at me picking off the tough ones!). And a big fin Cadillac with an interesting, but awkward, formal roofline. Is that a Calais?

Looks like that one was tough, with from L to R an Austin A40/Devon, apparent Hillman Minx, and Morris Minor with an unusual continental kit.

Same building quite a few years later, no doubt easier, zooms well:

Here’s what seems like a fairly well-circulated picture but one I don’t recall seeing here before. Fort Worth, TX circa 1957. The cars on the lot are one thing, but the street traffic is more diverse, although the foreign invasion has yet to arrive.

The foreign invasion was a long time coming. I remember being surprised at how few imports were in DFW when I moved here in 1980 from the bay area. Here's a video of traffic on Central Expressway at that time, just about 100% domestics:
