I admire the owners of Jeep and similar vehicle owners to decorate their vehicle's exterior for various seasons, hence my pic of the car above.

One thing about hybrids is that sometime from around 8 years to 16 years it's likely that the hybrid battery is going to need to be replaced. Chronic car buyers are almost certain to have sold the car long before then, but that means that second or third owner will need to deal with battery replacement. When that hits it seems like the battery and other parts are maybe around $4k and installation is another thousand or so, meaning a repair bill of maybe around $5k. A used battery would be cheaper, of course, but also more likely to fail. Anyway, a hybrid will often save at least $500 in gas over a regular model, but then at the end of ten years it seems like most of those savings go away. Back in 2014 my sister and husband got an Accord Hybrid Touring, paying full list price for it at that time. They've really enjoyed the car, and it still usually gets in the high 30s around town. It used to get around 40 mpg, and so that's possibly a sign that the battery is running down. As long as the hybrid battery doesn't need to be replaced it's saved them some money and has been better for the environment + the car actually still has good resale value for a car of that age. They are hoping to trade it in soon for a Subaru Trailerseeker EV.

A doctor friend of mine got 100k miles on his Prius, then got a new battery replacement,

    Merry Christmas !

I admit I don't know anything about garage doors, but I think the stress is caused when it goes up....there is a lot of force pulling the door up....down seems easier.

Seems to me it is time to just get her to call "the guy" and pay whatever it takes to get it fixed before she leaves.
She will wait until I get back so we can choose new doors and check out which "Guy" we'll get to come and install new motors and doors.

So I took the liberty this afternoon to shuffle some things around and make my snow blower accessible if I should need it. I also fired up the snow blower to make sure it works. It has been close to 2 years since I last used it.

You might be right.....the door is behind held on to the mechanism by a large bolt but that is temporary. But, she mentioned it might be time to replace the Wayne Dalton motor too....not sure about that though. It might be good to do the doors this year and pray that the motor keeps going.

I wish I knew how to fix them. It would save me a lot of money. It looks like a lot of bikes, but there are 5 of us. My wife and I each have a road bike light weight, skinny tires (tyres to you). We each have a hybrid bike that is sturdier and much more comfortable to ride. We have a bike for my daughter. One bike is too small for any of my kids.

Aren’t there organizations that recondition old bikes and give them to needy kids? Might be a better use for them.

One of our local bike shops here will take old bikes and recondition them. They then give them to the police who, in turn, give them to kids who need them. I have donated a few to them.

They aren't sitting there broken. The bikes get used. Things like tune ups, new tubes, new tires like everything else has gotten expensive over the last few years.

We were doing car shopping and saw that for the price of the hybrid I could get the same car non hybrid and enough gas for 3 years of driving. Maybe even longer as my required driving is going to seriously drop in 23 months. Plus the costs of replacing the batteries when needed will likely eat up most, if not all, savings from the hybrid. My sister's Prius battery replacement was more than the car was worth.

8 years is definitely on the short side. Real world results say they should last a lot longer.

but once you are into the 12-15 range, ICE cars can get very expensive. Engines crapping out, or transmissions (go price a 10 speed modern AT replacement).

Well a 10 speed AT replacement is half the price of a battery replacement of a Tesla model 3.

I am a big fan of hooks for hanging my bicycles. This way, I can keep them out of the way for everyday purposes, but they remain easily accessible if/when needed. In this way, I have about 3' of vertical space I can use on the floor underneath the bicycles for things like lawn equipment, storage, etc. In @nyccarguy's garage, he could probably park the hood of the Prelude under them and maybe even fit a second car in the garage on occasion!

I keep my commuting bikes inside my shed during the winter months, but then move them to hooks under the exterior eaves during the summer for faster access.

Had to put the snow beater into service yesterday. Went to family post Christmas dinner (out in the country, 33-44 miles from home depending if we take back roads or the highway). Should have forced the wife to bail as soon as the snow started but we stayed longer, and it came down really quick. Very slick ride getting to the highway (nothing had been treated). Even the interstate was largely untouched but was passable to start (could see pavement, and few cars).

that lasted until we got closer to the big towns, then we got stuck behind a plow train. That did not seem to improve the roads at all, but it did clog up traffic. I was OK with the slick roads. Not OK with the idiots getting way to close and driving badly. Worst offenders for speeding and running up on people were semis. That was unnerving.

traffic closer to home thinned out a bit, but visibility and conditions deteriorated. Took us about double the normal time to get home, but thankfully we made it safely. Just stressed! On a positive note, the Acura, even with 6 YO continentals with 30K miles on them, handled it like a champ. No slipping, very confidence building. If we end up keeping it another year, I will be putting new tires on though.

I shudder to see how bad it looks now. Likely has salt everywhere, including on the frame. That will be getting a bath Tuesday

    got it right up here.

got the driveway and sidewalk finished. Daughter is staying with us so she helped. Plow guy came through about 3:00 when the snow had stopped so the bulk of the driveway was done. Just have to do the edges that the plow does not reach, but that is not a big deal.

they are closing on their new house a little north of us on Monday. Planning to buy a show shovel today (hopefully Lowes still has some, but possible the prior owners leave one!) And are planning to look at snow blowers but the driveway is a bit steep so not sure how easy it will be to use one.

I think we got in the 6" range. But it was very cold yesterday when it came down (low teens) so it was drier than normal, and pretty easy to move.

    got it right up here.

got the driveway and sidewalk finished.

Get one with tracks instead of wheels.

that sounds expensive. not a huge driveway and they are young and work out, so a couple of shovels should do it!

I might also just let them borrow mine to try it out. Just moves 2x a year from the shed to the garage and back.
