I watched several hours of the Rolex24. I was glad to see the Captain pick up a third win in a row in GTP while BMW was P3. In GTD Pro BMW was P1 and Mercedes-AMG scored P2 and P3. Finally, Mercedes-AMG picked up the win in GTD. A bright spot to take my mind off the lousy weather.

Looks like the snow forecast was off for my area. Official total was 10.5” instead of the predicted 18-24. Hardly worth the mass panic. Looks like work is closed today although the boss said he’d let us know by 9am.

My yardstick says about 12-13”. Still a lot even if not 18”. Massive snow piles from the plow and shoveling.

We were very fortunate and did not get an accumulation of ice that was forecasted. A combination of snow, sleet, wind and rain again late yesterday evening on top of was received earlier. Neighborhood roads are in bad shape. No power outage for us, thankfully!

Read a story that this is the most snow in Ohio since Blizzard of 78.
If so, it wasn't that bad we got a little over a foot of snow.
Had higher totals than that many time when I lived in CT.

I think we ended up at about 15". Was out this afternoon doing the final clearing (last few inches since the plow came) and all the sidewalks and corners they don't get. Major snow drift in front of the garage doors. But I got it done without a heart attack, so call it a win!

We only got a couple on inches of snow but man it's been cold here. Hasn't been above 10 in days and we had about 36 hours of below 0 temps ans wind chills have been constantly in the negatives.

We were in the 8-12" range. And probably ended up with about 15" because it snowed all day Monday and added about 6" to what we woke up with. I plowed my 1/4 mile long driveway twice Monday. Today I have to spend time pushing back the piles.

I might even put in a wood stove.

I'm surprised NY hasn't outlawed them, or are you talking about some sort of all-singing-and-dancing thing that burns pellets and has a catalytic converter? A fair few people in rural locations harvest wood on their own property and use outdoor wood-fired hot water systems to excellent advantage. Buying firewood by the cord, OTOH, . . .

CA electric rates run 0.30 - 0.33 per kwh, so it could be worse.

AFAIK indoor wood stoves are still legal but I think cat converters are required. Outdoor boilers while still technically legal have been regulated out of existence.

The CA rates are bad but you don’t usually have zero degree temps for extended periods.
However, Californians sometimes think 60 is cold and time to put on thick jackets and turn on the fireplace.

Finally, home from our Ma Nature-extended Bay Area family visit (granddaughter's fourth birthday. We got her a pink electric Jeep. No one ever bought me a car). We were originally to return late Monday, tried to get a flight out late Saturday to beat the snow, alas the best laid plans of mice and men... We spent almost 12 hours at SFO, hoping to grab an earlier flight. We were rewarded as after our original 3:29pm flight was rescheduled to 12:45am, it was moved up to 12:15am. Yes!

Here in America's Hometown, we got ~18" of white gold. However, given the wind patterns at the back of the house, the back door had about a 4' drift against it. As well as 3-4 foot drifts I slogged through to get to the back door to shovel. By the time we arrived home the HOA had completed plowing roads, driveways and shoveled a nice path from the driveway, through the courtyard to the front door.

My two main worries (well, a constant third which I'll get to...) were returning to the Audi buried in the Logan Express parking lot and, after 7 days of temps in the teens and lower, a dead battery. Car was indeed buried, but the LE folks had shovels to lend, so after 15 minutes of shoveling and clearing snow from the car, I hopped in and the beast roared (well, electric roar, quickly followed by the mighty turbo 4 spinning to life. Yes, it was again wicked cold) and the Audi plowed through what was left of the snow behind it with little drama.

Whilst in CA, I Enterprised a Honda Civic (they had a row of Sentras and a Civic and said I could pick any one. Tough choice), what a nice ride! Very basic version, but quite roomy and the trunk swallowed all our luggage, unlike my Audi (evil battery taking up hatch space). Peppy 4, solid handling and ride and overall 31 mpg with much local driving. A bit of wind noise around my A pillar and road noise, perhaps the Kumho's were the culprit. But were I in the market for an "inexpensive" car, likely top of the list.

The aforementioned third worry hovered over me like a seagull at In-n-Out outdoor dining patio; wife wants to live closer to her kids in CA. And, as the universe continues to treat me like a punching bag, the owners of the AirBnB we rented are both realtors (with two homes in Pleasant Hills, one in Tahoe, one in NY and, if their daughter decides to remain in Boston, they plan to buy here, too). Of course, the wife took their business cards and had her eyes out for "For sale" signs as we navigated between Pleasant Hills and Martinez. Although she said Walnut Creek is her preference (good car dealer town!). My semi-constant mentions of tax rates and gasoline and food costs were met with silence. I'm on a fixed income! Oh, and the realtor couple had a Rivian. The husband mentioned he still has range anxiety and takes the on-board nav notices to stop and charge seriously.

I will say the temps in the 50s-60s were nice, it felt 10 degrees warmer to us as the natives shivered. When the sun was shining, it was actually quite glorious.

And, of course, Go Pats! Dynasty 3.0 has commenced. Roger Goodell must be apoplectic... Kidding about the next dynasty (?), it's all gravy after winning the division after 8 wins total the prior two seasons.

@laurasdada - If you want to blend proximity with cost of living considerations, maybe consider something in Nevada, like Pahrump (not sure what part of CA you were visiting). It is not a terribly long drive, is reasonably close to the airport in Las Vegas (about an hour drive), and would keep you from being *too* close to the offspring.

When I used to fly out of philly we parked at the off site most of the time but never had to deal with snow. I started paying the extra to park in the attached garages even when I was paying for it. Much more convenient and no worries about the car being outside. And not that much more Money.

Thanks, @xwesx. Nevada and AZ are two possible candidates. But, tbh, we both love our current home and New England. Also 16 yo doggie is likely no longer a boarding candidate, curtailing any current travel plans as well as any thoughts of moving.

5th day in a row shoveling. Yesterday was to clear overnight drifts created from the existing snow.
We're getting some sun so I'm hoping some of it will melt.
Update. Took a shower and by then it's flurrying again.

I had to shovel again today too. Just not at my house. My daughter and SIL finally moved to their new house today (from Boston). Thankfully weather cooperated, and the movers got it done without a hitch.

I went up to the house earlier to get it ready, and discovered that the plow guy did plow (and put down salt), but did not do (as the kids expected) the sidewalk and porch. Which would make getting into the house tricky. So guess who got to do that?

Speaking of that snow storm, I was looking at the camera views in Ohio. It looks like the city plowed all the street snow directly in front of our driveway (left side of photo, to the left of the little picket fence)! Good thing we’re not there. That would be a heck of a mess.

There is a couple a few houses down the street from me who both work from home. Their driveway hasn't been cleared and there are no tire tracks in the snow. They only thing in the snow are tracks from when the dragged the trash bin out and back last Monday and a set of foot prints going up to the front door and back, maybe a delivery. Other than that no signs that they have been outside since the ice age started.

You want a bill story? I’ve got a doozy.

Up here in Nova Scotia, we have just one main electric power utility. Last March, they suffered a devastating cyber attack that wiped out most of their systems except for (thankfully) their process control systems. They still haven’t recovered. Billing was totally destroyed as was their ability to have their smart meters communicate with the central office. They were forced to estimate bills for months, many of which were woefully wrong. They have finally re-established communication with their smart meters but most of their bills are totally screwed up because of what happened. I got a bill for $450 for a period when my usage was more like $250. They still haven’t corrected that. It is extremely ugly.

The public service commissions shouldn't allow utilities to estimate bills except in very narrow circumstances. My electric meter stopped registering for a few weeks. I had no idea. The utility knew, though, because it was a smart meter. They eventually came out to replace it, but still billed me "estimated" usage for the weeks the meter had stopped. To me, not collecting for usage when a meter is dead is part of their cost of doing business, but obviously they see it differently.

My electric bill for some reason was estimated in November and I knew it was too low. Then in December they caught up to me. That bill hurt.
