  Thanks Wally. The dealer replaced the TPS and everything seems fine now. I should see if they will pay you for your advice. If I hadn't asked on Town Hall they would probably still be replacing parts. Still don't know what the final bill will be. They should only charge me for the TPS but of course they will hammer me for all their screw ups. You would think that if you are having a problem with the throttle, something called a throttle position sensor would come to mind but no one at the dealership had ever mentioned it to me as a potential problem.

  I bought my 98, 5.9 SLT plus in May 98, paid a fortune, but was in love. Just took it to the dealer to trade for a new one, and they say the tranny is going south (starts in second gear - occasionally). Needless to say, since I have faithfully maintained my D and never pulled a trailer, I'm a little upset. Shouldn't this drivetrain have lasted more that 42k? The driving I do shouldn't have taxed this rig at all. I see others with problems, any suggestions? The dealer thinks I should have purchased the extended warranty (very helpful), to which I reply its a truck used only to putz around town. I grew up on Chevy tonners pulling trailers for 100k before we got rid of them. Maybe I haven't worked this thing hard enough. In any case, I'm going to have to consider the Tahoe and Sequoia now.

  ...if I were you I'd get a second opinion! I'm not saying all dealers are crooked, but I've heard the "it needs a new transmission" so many times, in reference to sooo many vehicles that I just don't trust it anymore. I have a friend with a '98 Tracker who was having tranny problems. One place said it needed to be replaced and wanted to charge him $1800 to put in a used one. Another place ended up fixing it for $20.00. Another friend with a Grand Marquis was having tranny fits...it cost him about $50.00 to have fixed. I think it was a clogged filter or something.
  
  Anyway, take it to a mechanic that you trust and have them check it out. It may just need servicing or adjustment.

  Dopn't forget, you were trying to trade it in. The dealer will do and say anything to nickle and dime your trade in down. I'll bet there was nothing wrong with that tranny.
  
  Its funny how when you trade something in there are all sorts of things "bad" but go back to the lot 2 weeks later and the car is for sale at high price and is recomended as a great car.
  
  I think all this talk about mopar trannys is overdone. Yes the ultraglide or whatever it was called in the late 80s early 90s was a POS but the new ones are okay. I have 2 current 4 speeds, one behing a 5.2 and the other behind the 4.7 both have been great. The one in the 5.2 has almost 100K The one in the 4.7 is new (only 4000 miles).

  I've gotten about 50K miles out of my Intrepid's 4-speed automatic with no problems, although I did have it serviced at 30K miles. And I think the 4-speed used in cars is a descendant of the old Ultradrive of the late 80's, although greatly improved.
  
  The trannies they use in trucks don't have anything in common with the old Torqueflites of yesteryear, do they? Those things were virtually indestructible!
