this whole mileage thing is way over rated. I just bought a one owner 89 SI, with 120k which has been fully inspected and the computerized emission came out like a new car.
My mechanic was working on the engine of a 86 SI with about 180k. you should have seen the cylinders. they looked beautiful. The reason it was is the shop was because the car had an oil leak and the oil was too low, the upper seal went dry and the timing chain pulley broke.
I bought mine after I saw that engine. All I can say is I did a lot of research and most everyone had nothing but good thing to say about these cars.
Does anyone know a good mail order or catalog company that carries replacement moonroof's for CRX Si's? My 91 has seen better days and I would really like to try to find a good replacement roof. There just aren't many good junkyards here in East Central Mississippi.
now days you can access any used part for any car nationwide. You pay the shipping, but then you save on local taxes.
You can also do a search for 'used auto parts'.
good luck and let us know how you did.
PS: my CRX got broken into couple of nights ago, and they only took a pair of glasses. go figure. Cleaning the broken window was more trouble than actually changing the window.
Our CRX was routinely broken into every couple of months for as long as we owned it, even though it had nothing in it. Fortunately, our thieves were skilled enough to enter with a door jimmy and never broke a window.
I just wanted to say that if you own a CRX, keep it! Those things are amazing - the original "pocket rocket." I've seen those things pull quarter-mile times normally reserved for $100,000 super cars. Of course that's not all motor, but it's still impressive. I'm in the market for a CRX myself. Better hang on to 'em 'cos people are snatching 'em up!
CRX's are capable of pulling 1/4 mile times that will put a $100,000 super car to shame. They'll put a McLaren to shame and those cost over a mil. The catch is, if you throw enough money at anything it will run the 1/4 that fast, and there are other cars that will run significantly faster given the same amount of money. Personally, I think anyone that turns a CRX into a 1/4 mile terror ought to be run up the nearest flag pole. This isn't what these cars are good at. Sure, if you throw 10 grand in engine mods at it it will probably turn a 12 or so. Throw 10 grand at a mustang, or a camaro, or any old muscle, and you should be into the 10's. I'd much rather see the money spent on some modest engine modifications and the rest on suspension, which will improve the one thing that the CRX is good at, which is handling.
The CRX is a fun car. Driving one kind of makes me think of a hardtop, more practical miata. It's nimble, tossable and has enough power to get out of it's own way. 5 years ago or so I had a 91 Si, put H&R springs on it, adjustable Koni's and 16 inch wheels with decent rubber and the thing was an absolute delight to corner in, and a delight to drive in general. I think if I'd spent the 2 grand I spent on that in engine mods I probably would have picked up maybe half a second in the 1/4. Maybe a whole second, who knows, but it still wouldnt be fast. As far as the original pocket rocket (A modern one anyway, there were some little imports that I'd classify pocket rockets back in the 60's) I think the title would have to go to the rabbit/golf/gti.
I just sold my CRX - a really great little car. I thought the rack would fit on my new acura, but will not. If anyone needs a thule bar set with locks for your CRX, I would be happy to sell this rack - cheap. My email is maryh@ci.breckenridge.co.us.
Does anyone know of a company that makes a wide body kit for the 2nd generation CRX? I have found tons of ground effects and spoilers but no success in fender and quarter panel flares. I just bought this 88 CRX at a salvage auction for $110.00. I want to make a "hoopty" out of it so I don't kill my 99 Integra GSR that is already hooptied out. I have seen CRX's with these kits, but can not find the companies that produce them. Any help is much appreciated!!
Back in November, 1998 I traded my '91 CRX in for a new '99 Prelude. 2 years have past, and I still miss my little red baby. Trading it in was by far the dumbest thing I have ever done. I bought it new and took excellent care of it. In fact when I traded it in, it only had 54k on it. I had the "new car" itch @ the time and bought the Prelude without really putting much thought into what I was giving up....too bad.
I have gone so far as tracking down the buyer of my car and knocking on their door asking if I could buy it back from them. They said "no-way".
I still drive past their home about once a month to make sure they are taking care of it. Basically stalking my old car.
Think long and hard before you decide to get rid of yours!
Has anyone heard of any kind of public movement to pressure Honda into bring back the CRX? If they took the rear wheel skirts off the Insight and stuck a VTEC into one they could have an instant CRX and I would be first in line to buy!
Happy driving to all of you lucky people who still drive your CRX!
Back in 85 I bought a brand spanker red & silver CRX in Toronto & drove it back home to the maritimes. Had the car for 2 1/2 years & loved every minute of it, but traded it for a car with a back seat (needed some extra room at the time). 13 years later I still miss that little CRX and reading all the posts on this board has made me a little misty ... excuse me I'm becoming a little verklempt ...
Did CRX's come in green? I remember an "aqua" sort of color, but never a green. ???
I had a '91 Si (red) for 8 years and never had a single mechanical problem. I never even changed a light bulb...I swear!
Only problem I had was it went through mufflers like it was going out of style. Believe I put 3 on it before I decided to buy one with a lifetime warranty through the dealer...after that had to have it replaced one more time...but @ no charge.
The problem I see with finding a decent CRX now days is that the ones I see on the road have had so much aftermarket equiptment attached to them that the original design is all but lost or they appear to have been driven into the ground. I never see a well kept good looking stock CRX anymore.
I loved mine and miss it every day, even though its been over 2 years since I sold it.
I had a '87 CRX Si I bought new in October '86 and drove it until October '99. It was black, and I kept it stock for the entire time I drove it, all 180,000 miles of it. It was reliable and a joy to drive. I loved that car, but after my wife was in an accident that totalled her car, she wanted me to have a car with air bags. I couldn't stand the idea of buying a car that wouldn't be as much fun to drive, practical to haul junk, economical to run and dependable over time. I bought a BMW 318 ti sport. I tell everyone it is a German CRX with a back seat. While I love my new car, I still do miss my little black pocket rocket. If Honda made a CRX Si again I'd probably but a new one and drive it for the next 13 years.

Any buying tips, impressions of this model year
appreciated.
Any overheating problem with this model?
Thanks
