I was in Italy in April when the ford focus was arriving at the dealers. I drove the 3 door sport version and i liked a lot. a had a 94 civic ex and it was a good car but i would gladly replace it with a
european focus. I didn't drive the American version yet so I don't how much ford "killed it" before it get in America. For some reason ford always kills its european products, good example, mondeo(contour here) and escort. Anybody that had a chance to drive a escort XR3 there
  • suby2suby2 Member Posts: 1
Why won't Ford make the 5 door hatchback Focus available in the U.S. and will Ford destroy what is an awesome car in Europe when it gets here in November? I had an Escort before and it sucked!! But I am very impressed with the Focus and already have my name at the dealership to be first in line to buy the hatchback when it gets here but I would prefer the 5 door. I believe that all of the American Car Company's cheat Americans out of good quality that they give the Europeans. After being in Holland and driving the European versions of our cars...we here in our country are being robbed!!

Good thoughts about Focus vs. Civic. One thought of mine: 'Drove my Dad's Taurus sedan the other day (a '96, maybe? Not the current version, but the model just before that) and found myself thinking, "I'll NEVER buy a Ford!" I'm a Honda guy, and to me Ford's "emphasis" on quality seems like it must have been, say, "Job #37." I really hope they surprise me with the Focus, but I won't hold my breath.
  • norwaydougnorwaydoug Member Posts: 249
I too am very concerned about Ford quality. I have always bought Japanese cars and I have been pleased. Cars initially seem to be very high in quality, but time weeds out the best from the worst.

I have heard many Taurus nightmares (transmissions breaking down) and since I am considering a Focus...I am concerned I too will be stuck with an unreliable Ford.

I have the impression that the American Focus is fairly true to the Euro Focus. Steering and suspension modifications and of course 5 mph bumpers are the major differences.

Ford of Europe does use better plastics and materials than Ford of USA. However in Norway, a Ford Focus is 30,000 USD. While a ZX-3 is about half in USA. So I will go for the cheaper plastics and save 15K.

I think the 3 door Golf GL is a less risk, but it is about 3 K more and perhaps no more reliable than a Focus ZX-3.

On www.automedia-online.com/spion a European car website, there is a spy photo of a 2 door Focus, with a trunk. I bet it will come to the US to replace the ZX2.

The hatchback market is small, but we will see if the ZX3 will break the ice.
  • mznmzn Member Posts: 727
isellhondas, I think it's a chicken & the egg sort of thing. If you offer fewer, less interesting hatchbacks, the hatchback market shrinks.

The hatchback market is probably much bigger than we think because there are loads of folks out there who want the practicality of a hatch combined with style and power. Hence the hopeful excitement about the Focus and the lamenting the fact that the 5-door model is not coming to the US.

I only pointed out the CRX piece because it was raised by the owners themselves. Why doesn't Honda provide something comparable as a replacement?

BTW, post #207 is hidden above because the long url is skewing the page. Just click on hidden to read.

I just returned from 2 weeks in France where I drove the 5 door hatch-back. I thought that it was wonderful. I am a 250 pounder and along with my wife and 2 friends I was very surprised at the room. Yes the trunk is limited but there is the pass-through feature as long as you don't have any body in the back seats.
I did not realize that the engine was a turbo-diesel until after I went to put fuel in it. The engine was very responsive but I don't think that they will bring it over here.
The car was well finished and I liked the styling. I would buy it here over the Honda because of the upright seating position and roomyness.

Shoppers are funny when it comes to hatchbacks.

They either love them or hate them, no middle ground.

Overall, they do not appeal to the masses...

yup, it matters to me. ford usa quality is just fine on my last several fords - kansas city, atlanta, michigan truck (especially good on f-150 from michigan). however, having worked in mexico on business trips, i absolutely do not trust quality of workmanship in that country. zx3 from wayne - fine, i'd try it. zx3 from mexico - no thanks ford, sell it there please. blue jeans & tvs from mexico fine - if they are crappy - discard 'em. too much jeopardy with a car to risk mexican workmanship on a $15k asset. i wonder - how does vw quality on mexico jettas compare to germany golfs? anyway, if the zx3 is mexican, i will just settle for an atlanta taurus or a kansas city contour. - ranchero -

...and in deference to the Car Lady, a much shorter one.

    http://www.kbb.com/kb/ki.dll/kw.kc.rp?kbb&&11&cc00focus

    Well, somewhat shorter...

I agree with the concern of a new car platform, possible short life runs, remember the Probe and Fiesta? The concern of the local of assembly, by the way, how can you be certain that your car comes from Wayne (State?) and not mexico? And does a European Focus...European Car of the Year, equate with the product offered here in the United States.
    Whew!
By the way, an interesting artical in the Oct. 24,1999 Sunday New York Times Automoile section about the Ford Ka...with brief mentions about the Focus and Echo.(The Fiat Multipla was also highlighted)
Another Ford Euro offering, a two door hatch, and absolutely no mention of it here on the Edmunds home page. Hmmmm

It is correct that Americans do not favor hatchbacks.

    Q. What is the difference between a hatchback and a sedan?

    A. A hatchback has its trunk hinge above the rear window, and a sedan has its trunk hinge below the rear window.

ie: you can make a hatchback that looks just like a sedan, but can still swallow a couch.

In light of this it is a wonder hatchbacks are not more popular. I guess too many people have trunk envy! ;^)
  • norwaydougnorwaydoug Member Posts: 249
    I have 2 views:

I believe a lot of people believe that their chance of injury in a 'rear-end' car accident is reduced in a sedan because the crunch space is larger due to the trunk.

This makes sense to me. The Focus ZX-3 is 12 inches shorter which translates the rear bumper is 12 inches closer to the passenger section in the hatchback.

However, 12 inches shorter gives 12 inches more space on the road! That foot could save your life!

Oh....you can find out where your car is made by simply reading the sticker located inside driver's door sill. It could also be on the List Price Documentation located on the window of a new car at the Dealers.

If you are truly concerned on its origin of manufacture.....then I would really make sure before you buy.

I am not certain if the ZX-3 is made in Mexico or in Wayne. I have the impression that all sedans are made in Wayne and all ZX-3s are made in Mexico. Does anyone know the definitive answer?

When does the Focus ZX-3 is released for sale? Early November or late November?

    NorwayDoug
  • wmichgradwmichgrad Member Posts: 28
Sedans and Wagons are assembled in Wayne, MI.
The ZX-3 is assembled in Hermosillo, Mexico and SHOULD be available in early November.
  • rancheroranchero Member Posts: 25
country of manufacture can easily be determined by first letter/number in VIN. 1 = USA. 2 = Canada. J = Japan. W = Germany. on some asian or european built cars, the port of entry may be listed as origination point on monroney sticker (ie: houston, jacksonville, portland). car will not have been manufactured there though. to determine country of origin for sure, check VIN.
  • mahalomahalo Member Posts: 1
The earlier comments about hatchback popularity in the US are true. They don't seem to attract because there are so few good offerings. Personally, I love the little buggers.
One of the best cars I ever owned was an 88 Mazda GTX which had a 16v turbo and full time 4-wheel drive. Went like the hammers of hell and stuck like flypaper. Carried an incredible amount of cargo. Mazda only built it in 88 & 89 and then it was discontinued as too expensive ($13,500 in 88). Since Ford and Mazda have been close, I was hoping to see something similar come from Ford. The ZX3 might start them thinking in this direction, and I can't wait to drive it!

My experience with Ford quality has been exceptional. Had a 94 Probe GT that was care free & lots of fun to drive. My Taurus & Aerostar before it also had no mechanical problems to speak of but none were 1st year models.

    My Hatchback resume

80 Rabbit - fun to drive but very poor quality - engine, electrical, shifter, brakes, water leaks - is VW any better now?

88 Honda CRX Si - fast and fun. best looking bought used and had serious engine problems. Not typical for a Honda.

92 Madza 323 - the best mechanically. Not great handling but exceptionally well made. Daughter drives with 130,000 miles and still drives, shifts, feels like new Looks are uninspiring

92 Nissan NX1600 Very nice The T-Tops make it extra fun. Of course, the NX 2000 is even better. Minor mechanical problems. Looks - OK but no CRX.
    Son drives and loves.

I've done pretty good...2 kids driving 5 speed hatchbacks. ZX-3 will look big next to the Miata.

    Mazda 3to3 4by4:

That was an awesome car! I really liked that car, but of course, at the time, I couldn't afford it. It was like a watered-down-rally car. Really sporty and stylish. I am sure they only sold 1000 of them, but it was great!

Thank you wmichgrad for your information. I hope that I will be able to buy a ZX-3 in December. My only concern is the lack of tilt/telescope steering wheel which may affect my driving comfort. Otherwise I think I'll buy the Se Sedan with the sports package.

    Hi everyone,

I found these threads last night and just couldn't stop reading! Some great info here.

I'm considering the purchase of a Focus ZX3, but I don't like the fact that tilt/cruise are unavailable. The ZX3 is my first choice, but I'm considering a sedan because of the added options.

I stopped by the local dealership, which is notorious for over-pricing new and used vehicles in the community I live in -- dominated by retirees.

I was planning to purchase out of town, I didn't figure the sales manager would make a good offer, but decided to stop anyway so I could check out the Focus (only had a sedan).

The sales manager offered me a ZX3 at $500 over invoice, said he would order whatever I wanted at invoice price plus $500. The cost, including delivery came out to $13,600 -- this includes a/c, remote entry/locks, anti-lock brakes, floor mats, and $10 for gas. Of course, he would have to order it, telling me that he would get it much quicker if he had a name attached to the order rather than just a stock delivery.

This seems like a pretty fair price, any thoughts from all of you? Is there a dealer incentive that I don't know about making his deal sweeter than I realize?

Also, there was a $75 fee that I'm curious about, it's listed as "FDAF Assessment". Anyone know what that is? Should pay it or try to get him to delete it?

Once again, great threads on this page, enjoy reading them.

Keep in mind that it is the comfort group that comes with tilt/telescopic steering wheel on the SE. The driver side manual seat height adjust may help in regards to steering wheel position without the tilt/telescopic feature.

I can't believe the things I've read in this discussion area -- it seems everyone refuses to believe that a car made in Mexico can't equal one made in the USA. Read on....

Below are a couple of paragraphs that I cut & pasted from an article on a web site (the article is talking about the quality of cars produced at the Hermosillo, Mexico plant).

To read the full article, visit http://www.epn.org/prospect/15/15shai.html.

    [[Begin cut & paste]]
    Auto Assembly.
The results are equally impressive for auto assembly. The most sophisticated plant is
Ford Motor Company's $500 million assembly and stamping plant in Hermosillo. About 2,000 hourly
workers, more than 120 robots, and dozens of computerized systems produce up to 165,000 cars a year, all for export north. Three years after the plant went on line, according to company data, the Mercury Tracer it produced had the second-highest quality rating for small cars sold in the U.S. market, outdistancing even Nissan Sentra and Toyota Corolla.

In 1990, the plant switched over to assembling the more complex Ford Escort. By the end of 1992,
according to J.D. Powers, the Mexican-assembled Escort had a higher quality rating than cars
assembled in five of eight Japanese-owned factories in the United States and was virtually tied for fifth place out of 46 assembly plants in North America. In fact, quality in the Mexican plant was 8 percent higher than in a U.S. plant building the same car. The Mexican plant needed about 15 percent more workers per vehicle than the U.S. plant, but that is low considering the Mexican plant uses less automation and therefore has lower capital costs.
    [[End cut & paste]]

I think I'd rather have a car made in Mexico.
  • norwaydougnorwaydoug Member Posts: 249
Yes.....I will keep that in mind. In Europe the hatchback comes with tilt and telescope as well as the manual height adjustment. On the week end I sat in a Euro Focus and adjusted the steering wheel in the center and adjusted the seat to its lowest setting. I was quite pleased with the results, but still I like the full adjustment better. When I return to the States...I will simply sit in both the ZX-3 and ZTS and try to decide.

    Re: Dealer Fees

500 dollars over invoice doesn't sound outrageous, but you could do better. I would meet him half way. The Focus is a domestic automobile and they will sell over 200,000 of these cars in a year at least and it will soon be a common site. Regarding the 75 dollars fees. I would ask for an explanation for it. If it is a 'fee' of some sort I believe you shouldn't have to pay for it. Assume nothing........just ask and if you get an unsatifactory answer, stay calm and make it an issue of the entire purchase. Or go to another dealer and see what kind of deal you can get there. Stay professional and stand your ground. You have total control. And it is definitely a business transaction and it is very important that you will be satisfied when you sign on the dotted line.

It is a good idea to read the car buying advice accessed on the HomePage.

Be patient and get a better deal. Good Luck!

I was reading some of the features of the ZX3 and they mentioned 40/60 rear seats. What the hell are those? Seems to imply the folding characteristics..but I am just guessing.
  • ksomanksoman Member Posts: 683
i'm not a big fan of ford, but i just saw this focus on the frazier show (new one) and i was thinking.. well this is so european, reminded me of the face of the european ford 'ka'. So I stopped by the local ford and test drove one. It does feel very much like a european car. Now I know the roots, et.al, but saying and driving, they are different. anyway, the feel of the drive, the car itself, in and out seems so non-US.. but its very likeable. now only if they have assembled it as well as the japanese or atleast like the european fords... its a buy... else however cool it is, its a no buy
  • leftybabsleftybabs Member Posts: 8
Instead of folding down a 'full bench' back seat for added cargo area, hatches have a split - either 60/40 or 50/50. Means that percent of the rear seat can be folded for added cargo and still allow a back-seat passenger. Either side can be folded - so fold the 40 and seat a passenger in the 60, etc.

What's the word on the best color on the ZX3? Most photos show silver but I wonder if it wouldn't look v. v. sexy in black...opinions?

How's the Focus w/ Zetec feel with the a/c on? Does it sap a lot of power? Do you Zetec-equipped Focus owners feel satistied with the engine. Seems to the a common complaint among reviews.
  • ragtop99ragtop99 Member Posts: 33
Consumer's report rates both the Ford Escort and Mercury Tracer above average for reliability (on par with a Toyota Corolla). They recommend them as used cars. Since these are made in Mexico it bodes well for the Focus. Interesting cut and paste from Maynard7 above.
  • yoredyored Member Posts: 12
Did anyone catch the Ford Focus shown on the PBS program "Wall $treet Week With Louis Rukeyser ",Oct.29th, ( On WNET 13 in NYC )?
He opened the program showing some new automotive offerings this year and the first was the Focus, spoke quite highly of it. The evenings special quest was an Automotive Analyst. He did not speak glowingly of the future of the Big Three's stocks, but he did describe the Focus as a potential "Knockout" with projected global sales of one million in 2000.
By the way Leftybabs, thanks for the info on the 60/40 rear seats!
  • fastfocusfastfocus Member Posts: 42
    Hi yored -

Yup, I saw "Louie" and the Focus looked terrific in that metallic dark blue. I also noticed that the door closed with a solid thunk. If the quality of construction is competitive I think it WILL be a knockout. I, for one, am hoping Ford really nails this one. If they do this Honda fan will likely...oh, man, I never thought I'd say this...shell out my hard-earned dough for a FORD!

I have an 88 Tracer 3 dr hatchback assembled in Mexico. It has been pretty reliable. Ford dealers in St Louis have Focus sedans but so far no hatchbacks. I like the high seating. Better view of the road (tired of looking at van, truck and suv bumpers and hub caps) and it's easier to get in and out of. Most vehicles you either have to climb up into or do the limbo to get in. My car is rated at 82 HP; the ZX3 at 130 HP. I have only seen one small drawing of the hatch open. It looks like it goes down to the floor. Was hoping it would start six or eight inches off the floor. I don't mind the lift over and it adds some structural strength. I did like the way the sedans brings the stereo and heat and air conditioning control to within easy reach of the driver with nice big buttons and knobs. Under the hood, I didn't see the radiator or cap. The engine compartment looked neat with three or four black boxes for the air cleaner, fuses, etc.. Waiting to test drive the ZX3 when it gets here. On the subject of hatchbacks, I think most women hate them. Lately it seems that hatchbacks are only offered in a few sub compact models.
  • norwaydougnorwaydoug Member Posts: 249
From your name, I assume you are female and I hope very much that you will like the ZX-3 when it comes. I have no idea if hatchback desirability is divided by sex. I know Americans do not like Hatchbacks very much because they are not prestigious. I do not know anything about this attitude. I want a car that is stylish, practical, reliable and safe.

Has anyone driven a ZX-3 or has seen one. November 1 is its debut?

    Regards,

    NorwayDoug

I am waiting for delivery of one ordered a couple of days ago. I drove a sedan (ZTS model) with the same engine and was mildly impressed. Although I don't know if it earns the term "pocket rocket", it was very enjoyble and rigid. Handling was fluid and feedback was direct. Driving it was (for a $12,000 car) very enjoyable. One note: I am going to use mine to cart my Greyhound back and forth from the park and cargo room is 18.5 cu. ft. (I'm talking hatchback now) vice the Civic's hatchback at 13.4 cu. ft. Also, the Civic isn't going to come with a CD player or ABS even as an option. Not beating up on Honda, just telling it like it is. Reliability is my next question and I haven't been able to find anything about it's earlier release in Europe
  • fastfocusfastfocus Member Posts: 42
The last woman I "seriously" dated once told me how much she loves small hatchbacks. She said, and I quote, "They're the best cars." I think she liked the (potential) combination of sportiness and practicality. Oh, well...there are probably marketing gurus out there who know whether women or men like hatches better, but I'm not one of them.

In my area, the suburbs of Philly, no ZX3's are available yet, but I called a dealer and they said sometime in November. I saw a silver ZTS sedan today and thought it looked sweet. However, as someone mentioned, it didn't have fog lights, which surprised me. 'Waiting to drive the hatch for now.

By the way, this has been a great sight. Good luck, everyone!

This weekend i was out test driving a new Fous SE "Sport" sedan, which I loved, and I asked the question about the ZX3s. According to a Milwaukee area dealer, the ZX3 is 3-4 weeks out still. However, and this is a big plus in my book if it is true- starting with the ZX3s built in February 2000 and later, more options will become available- i.e. power windows, speed control and hopefully the tilt/telescope wheel. Keeping fingers crossed that Ford wises up and does offer these options! No matter what though the Focus will be a great automobile!
  • timhoytimhoy Member Posts: 1
I drove the ZX3 hatch this past weekend. Very good handling and it is roomy and comfortable.Good ride for a sporty car and the automatic works well with the engine, though I want the 5 speed. Will watch quality although the cars I've seen I've been pleased with. I have a 95 Nissan Sentra that is pushing 90k and will be ready next year for a new car. Want something with more personality than my Sentra. This seems to fit the bill at an affordable price. Hopefully cruise will be offered by the time I'm ready.

Hello. I've just gotten some crummy news (I'm REALLY hoping I misunderstood ;). Anyway, I ordered a ZX3 at the beginning of October. Today the dealership called while I was out, and my little brother said that he was told the car wouldn't be coming in until 12/13! Yuck!

I'm hoping that my little brother mixed up the date and that he meant 11/13. Aaargh! Now I have to wait all night to find out if this is in fact true or not. I'll let you know what I'm told.

Incidentally, it's a Twilight Blue ZX3 with AC, ABS, and side airbags as the only options.

Seen the ford ZX3 TV ads a couple of times (first on last Sunday's simpsons) but still none on the lots around here. I've given a couple dealers my name to call when they arrive.

Yours is nearly exactly what I want - how much did you pay, ballister?

I saw some color photos of the Focus yesterday.

I know looks are subjective...BUT...Am I the only one who thinks the Hatchback is butt-ugly??

Now, I don't think A Civic Hatchback is a thing of beauty...Far from it!

    But.....Well, to each his/her own!

I thought very much the same thing when I first learned about the Focus in an Autoweek cover story. But, you know what? The looks of that little car REALLY grew on me. When I learned about the unavailability of cruise control I was devestated and started looking at other options to replace my Jeep Cherokee. I've settled on the Honda CR-V but still think a Focus hatchback may be in my future someday!
  • tomp711tomp711 Member Posts: 13
Forgot to mention I did learn about the future availability of the cruise control option but not until I settled on the CR-V.
  • ballisterballister Member Posts: 3
Called the dealership back today. My fears were confirmed. The eta on my Focus is 12/13. Back when I ordered, I was picturing 11/13 as my worst case scenario. They did me one month better =). Rats! Oh well, at least that gives me a couple of extra paychecks to square away some things.

    To ertzog, I'm paying $13,300.

In my opinion the ZX3 is visually interesting, almost delightful. It is definitely European; I can easily imagine the car parked somewhere in London or Paris or Vienna. Is it beautiful? I don't think so. It's not a Ferrari, not a Jaguar E-type. It can't be - it doesn't share the dimensions of those cars. However, it is inventive. It shows imagination. It's not a work of art but is "artsy." Frankly, I really like it, particularly as I see it more. And, in an era of crushingly boring small cars, it comes as a great billowing gust of fresh air.

Of course, all of this is only my opinion. I also think my '90 CRX looks incredibly cool, but a family member once told me it looks like half a car, as if the back had been chopped off(!). To each his or her own - just be true to yourself and buy what you really like, I say.

Maybe I'll change my opinion after awhile. Now, what's that about no cruise control...Really?

Seems hard to believe unless that's on the real base model. Cruise isn't available on Civic hatchbacks either. This wouldn't bother me a bit as I rarely use mine.
  • ragtop99ragtop99 Member Posts: 33
I wonder why isellhondas (above) thinks the zx3 is ugly? Is Honda maybe a little frightened that there will finally be some competition for the Civic. Saw a 4 door Focus sedan at a dealership and I think it looks much better than a Civic sedan. The hatchback is also much better looking than the Civic hatch. Seems like a lot of people here agree. This is probably worrying Honda bigtime. Honda made a big mistake putting the Si tag on the 99 sedan instead of the hatchback. Automobile magazine (dec. 99) says Ford will likely be coming out with an SVT Focus in 2001, 2.5-liter V6 170 horse.

I live in NYC...I've had small cars before...and especially now with the SUV behemouths all around, a small car with tail lights slung low are tail lights not likely to remain pristine for long with larger vehicles parallel parking using the "bump and tap" method. Besides, I think they give a greater range of visability.
Where is the "Cyclops" brake light located on the hatch?

I read the earlier note about the anxiously awaited Special Order ZX-3 that will arrive 12.13.99, but what about ZX-3 availability at the dealers presently? Have they been seen on the street or at the dealer or all ZX-3s delayed until December?
