tickbitty, you're probably looking at just a little bit more than that in my opinion. maybe 13800 or so. i ordered my 5 speed zx3 with a/c, abs and side airbags. i paid 2% over invoice which only came to approx. $260 over invoice. i know the owner and he's entitled to a living plus they have an outstanding service dept. $14400 with taxes, tags everything. KEEP IN MIND...Ford is offering special financing rates on these cars. I think I've got 4.9 for 36 months. The extra thousand or two you may spend on the Focus (the car you really want!)will be more than made up for by that finance rate when compared to 8 or 9% on a used car, plus you get the benefit of a warranty for three years!

oh and yes I"ve seen an orange one. I didn't particularly like it. Seems to me it should have been a little lighter / brighter on this type of car. White, black, silver all looked great! I ordered mine in twilight blue (navy) despite not having seen one in that color. Wish you the best!

Many thanks to Matcuk, whose excellent walk-through of his successful negotiations for a Focus wagon appeared a few days ago! I'm gonna go out and do likewise and will report on this effort late next week. And yeah, I like to haggle!

Also, about the burnt orange - I haven't seen it, but do remember that within last month (Nov) there were some posts about it on one of these Focus lists - a rollback should turn them up. The writers were enthusiastic. I'll confess this color tempts me - I'm a sucker for the unusual.

    Cheers to all.

    Hi,

I just picked up a black ZX3, 5 spd., A/C, power door locks.

Wonderful!! Can't say enough good things about it. Handling is great. I'm a little used to peaky engines in cars such as Hondas, so I feel a little let down when I'm winding the Zetec out a bit. In the zetec there is way more power spread throughout the rev range. That means you don't have to flog it just to keep up with traffic. Any honda civic owner will tell you they have to spend all their time above 4,000 rpm to make it move.

I will have to adapt, but I'll have fun all the while.

p.s. go out and buy one now!

I saw the ZX3 for first time and it looks cool. It doesnt look small like an Aspire or Metro. It was at Larry Roesh Ford in Chicago burbs.

The one I saw was all black and with auto.

A 5 speed is a good price point, though. Maybe it will make Honda bring back a Civic HB Si.

Lol - Pricing: took 'stock inv'y' model as sent by Ford to dealer, (std opt's plus smokers, a/c, manual, no abs which I wanted, wrong color, etc) After deal took out the 6 yr/60,000 extended(cost was 850+6% s/t). Final price (incl 6% sales tax, doc fees, etc) about 14,500-....

This Hatch has an 'under rear window shelf' which can be removed. Seats 4 humans(full-size adults) quite easily(60/40 split fold-down would, obviously, elim the 4th passenger) and without the shelf, the hatch is large enuf for a mid-size dog - provided it is not too active and no luggage to clutter the space (would still seat 3 adults if folded the 40 side, driver, f/seat passenger and small adult or child if folded the 60 part)... max cargo space (only front seat pass) is listed at 18.5 c/f.

does any of the above make any sense to u? I'm not sure I'm describing coherantly - kinda like, if u can't see, u can't imagine?

Had one person describe as 'a single person's mini-van' space/size wise - that description seems apt! lol
  • leftybabsleftybabs Member Posts: 8
The SPI is a straight shift into reverse, but the ZETEC (which I have) has the 'lock-out feature' which u describe - a locking ring which must be lifted before reverse can be accessed. But ty for the info!

Thanks y'all for your responses.....so I AM dreaming if I think I can afford what I want...ah well. Never got a new car before so I thought maybe if I took the base price and added 1200 or so I could get out of there with the basics I want. Well, we'll see if I can convince myself for another thousand or more in debt......

Thanks for the input on the orange color as well....I'm still intrigued by the color and the "focus!"
  • projectzx3projectzx3 Member Posts: 256
Tickbitty, As mentioned in my earlier post, I feel the special financing rates 4.9 and 5.9 on the Focus will more than make-up for the extra money spent. Also you have a 3 year/ 36000 mile bumper to bumper warranty...so you shouldn't have any repair costs to worry about.
If you purchase used you're going to have a loan anywhere from 7.5% to 9.5%. By the time the used car is paid off you'll have spent roughly the same amount without getting the car you really want! Check out the loan calculators available thru Edmunds or many other sites. Buy the Focus.

i got my zx3 for the total of 14,092(destination fee and assestment included)... excluding the tax but with all the options except the floor mats. i askED for a quote through (autobyteL.COM)...then 1-800-BUYFORD (N.Y. BASED) CONTACTED ME...THE TAG WAS BASED ON THE FACTORY INVOICE...THE ONLY THING THAT ANNOYS ME IS THE WAITING...ORDER PLACED ON OCTOBER 19~~~>E.T.A DECEMBER 13,1999....THEY SAID THE DELAY IS DUE TO FORD'S SHORTAGE OF DELIVERY TRUCKS......OH WELL,GO FIGURE.

Do any owner's know the speaker size in the ZX3? I din't find it in the manual. THe system sounds good as is, but I'm thinking to upgrade the speakers -- any suggestions on speaker models would be appreciated as well.

ProjectZX3 -- did you mention that the Tire Rack does have some offerings for the ZX3. If so, it doesn't show up on their web site (through the function that let's you see how a particular car looks with certain wheels). Also, what will be the prioritization of your project modifications? I assume tires and wheels first?

    Thanks

I am in the market for a small, new car. I've narrowed my search down to a Focus or Mazda Protege. I test drove a Focus Zetec Sedan and was impressed. I'd like to test drive a ZX-3 now. Is it roomy enough for me (I'm 6'1" and 220LBS)? The sedan was plenty big, as was the Mazda. The one hangup I have about the Focus is no power sunroof. My wife and I would like to have a sunroof. Mazda also has 0% financing for 36 months!!! Any advice out there?? How does the ZX-3 handle?
  • projectzx3projectzx3 Member Posts: 256
    sinman,

my son who will be the primary driver on our zx3 is 6'3" 185 lbs and had plenty of room when we test drove so i think you'd be ok. as far as the sunroof, i believe there are already aftermarket ones available for the Focus. Hey gang! I talked to my sales rep and our zx3 is to be here on Dec. 12th or earlier YYYYEEEEEEEHHAAAAA!!!!!! The car has been built and will be here! He apologized for the delay (tenative date was the 6th)but Ford is experiencing some delays in transport.
  • projectzx3projectzx3 Member Posts: 256
Tire Rack does have Team Loco #150 in 18" for the Focus...at least when I access it. 17 is the biggest I'll go with 215/40...but i'm going to use the 15" for the winter as you do need sidewall in bad weather. Yes...tires and wheels first. 2) body kit and/or spoiler 3) customize paint scheme 4) when out of warranty....high perf. exhaust(Borla) from cat back. 5) possibly supercharge. I am aiming to copycat the WRC within reason...I want to maintain drivability and be 50 state legal of course. My ZX3 is Twilight Blue Metallic....any color combo ideas. thanks.

A question to those who have seen the ZX3:

Does the front seat lift up to ease entry into the rear seats? That's a feature I like about the Golf 2-doors. The seat back not only folds forward but the seat also lifts up and pivots forward.

If the ZX3 doesn't do that, is it still very easy to climb into the rear?
  • dougmckaydougmckay Member Posts: 22
The passenger side seat does not pivot, it slides forward. However, entry into the back seat is much easier than trying to climb into the back of a Civic coupe (which I currently own).

I test drove a Pitch Black ZX3 on Thursday during my lunch break. I was HIGHLY impressed. The car felt solid, road and engine noise were WAY below that of my Civic, and the handling characteristics made the ZX3 a fun car to drive.

The only thing that may prevent me from buying one today is the lack of power window availability until February. I know the Focus is supposed to be an inexpensive, basic means of transportation, but there are just some creature comforts that I really like. And there are some I've learned that I don't need. For instance, even though I have cruise control on my Civic, I've only used it once during the past year, and that was for a 30 mile trip on the turnpike.

Anyway, if there was a possiblity of getting a ZX3 with power windows today, I would be driving one tomorrow. Ford has a winner here.

I picked up my ZX3 on Tuesday night (11/30) and have over 250 miles on it. I choose the car primarily because we had over $2000 in Citibank Visa/Ford rebates and I needed a replacement car for the work commmute. This car more than fits the bill and is an outstanding value (IMHO). I had originally ordered one from a local "volume dealer" and was told I might have "before Christmas". They had no manual ZX3s on the lot, nor did a nearly a dozen other dealers I checked. Some dealers are not content with a low price package and feel that no one wants to shift anymore. I hope time and demand proves them wrong!
Last weekend while running an errand I checked the local small Ford dealer, who previously had only a wagon for demo, and lo and behold there was a Rainforest Green ZX 3 with medium graphite interior, fresh off of the truck. It has exactly the equipment I wanted (5sp.,AC, floormats). The price was $ 12,853, and my "out the door" price (including local 5.5% sales tax) was $13,667. I bought the car Monday night and took delivery the next night.
This car is great. The Zetec engine is very flexible. It will pull 5th cleanly from below 2000 rpm (if you are too lazy to downshift). 70mph equates to just under 3000 rpm, with plenty of extra punch on tap. Dynamicaly, it reminds me of an Alpha Romeo 2000 GTV.
Since I park in a parking garage the lack of power windows is annoying, but livable. The only other bother is the upshift indicator, but I am starting to not notice it so much anymore.
The fit and finish are very nice. The lack of tilt wheel doesnt bother me too much, since the seat can adjust up and down, the the standard steering wheel position suits me fine. The only other slight disappointment is that the brushed aluminium center dash insert shown in some early photos (the November issue of Automobile)was replaced with a gunmetal colored one. Not quite as "rad" I guess. This car also reminds me a lot of the first generation VW Scirrocco (1975) with regard to being a "hot hatch" made from more mundane stuff. Cheers. Andy

the speakers in any focus are 5X7 in all four locations. the best place to find info like this is crutchfield. they have some really nice 5X7 rockford fosgate speakers that would fit.
as for ease of entry on the ZX3, i do not think it is as easy as the golf/gti, when i checked it out, i do not even remembering the seat sliding forward, and if it does, did it go back to where the seat was set, or to the most upright position???
  • hkoenen2hkoenen2 Member Posts: 70
Bought a zx3 (zetec Engine)with auto, abs, floormat. power locks and smokers package of the dealer lot and out the door with 7% tax was $14,750.
So far the car has been great and love the way it handles with 2 minor concerns. One the first tank of gas only got me 20mpg and I certainly hope that improves since I was taking it easy on the gas pedal for breakin. The second item is that the ABS light came and stayed on. Guess we take it back to the dealer to get it fixed. Wonder if they have the parts in??

I just got my zx3 on Dec. 4. Man, am I glad I did! Before I tell you guys why I love it, let me give you alittle background on myself. I am a 23 year old senior in college who will be graduating next week on Dec. 9. Ever since I was 18, I have always bought and driven used cars worth $2000 or less. In October, my 88 Ford escort broke down and I sold it. I decided that since I'm graduating soon (and therefore will be making some decent money) I might as well by a brand new car. I'm not a real big car buff, so my main concerns were price, reliability and performance. Just around this time I saw a TV commercial for a Focus zx3. I thought the car looked nice. (I always did like hatchbacks.) And so began my research on the Focus zx3. For 2 months I researched this car and other cars in its price range. All of my research was done via the internet. After the research was done , I had my choices narrowed down to 4 cars: Chrysler Neon, Saturn, Honda civic or Focus. My favorite out of the bunch was the focus. What sold me was the fact that it won Europe's 1999 car of the year award and that the car was getting good comments on Edmund's town hall. So I began to search for dealers in my area. (I live in the San Francisco Bay Area.) All of them said they had Focus 4 doors but the zx3 would not be in til at least December. Some even said january of Febuary. I couldn't wait until Janaury because I needed a car for my job search after graduation. In mid November, with $2,000 in my pocket for a down payment I began my car search at the local car dealers. My first stop was a Ford dealership. I was considering buying the focus sedan. To my surprise, my salesman said they would be getting a few zx3s any day! So after haggling a price I purchased one of the first zx3s to be arriving in the SF Bay area. I bought a silver zx3 with AC, side air bags, power locks, floor mats and auto transmission. After the $400 college grad rebate, the final price came to $13,700. This seemed like a reasonable price since the MSRP was $14,700. Besides the auto trans., I really didn't want all the options this was the cheapest one on their inventory list in an automatic.
I had to wait 2 grueling weeks before my car finally arrived. Believe me, it was worth the wait! The car is a dream to drive. It handles very well. All of the controls are easilly accessable. My girl friend thinks it's just the cutest thing on 4 wheels. Last night my girl friend and I along with her two very big brothers went out for a ride. Both her brothers are at least 5 foot 11 and weigh at least 230 each. Believe or not they both sat comfortablly in the back seats. On a side note, the sound system is just amazing.
To sum up this little story, I love my zx3. The car looks and drives superb. I feel like I purcahsed a well designed car at a very affordable price.
  • hkoenen2hkoenen2 Member Posts: 70
The front seats do not slide forward when flipping the seatback forward to get in the backseat. Getting in and out of the back is not easy unless you flip the seatback forward and slide the seat up. It works great for getting the kids in the back with just using the seatback, but trying to get an adult in the backseat without sliding the front seat up is asking a lot. By the way I would not recommend the backseat for any long trips for anyone over 5'.
  • ezavaletaezavaleta Member Posts: 25
Thanks for the info on the 5x7 speaker size. On Boston Acoustics' website, they say that 5x7 fits most Fords, so I concur with that sizing. I found some 5x7 Boston Acoustic CXs for $75 a pair on Tweeter.com. I'm hesitant to upgrade, since they sound very good already, not sure there will be a noticeable improvement for $150.

Also, thanks to ProjectZX3 for infor on the tires and modification prioritization. My idea is a bit different. I'm thinking of a more stealthy approach, with only tires and lowered suspension visible. I'm thinking of going with the widest possible 16", prob 225s. It seems that jumping up to 17" costs $300-400 more, not too justifiable to me. So after wheels and tires, I'm thinking to go with Eibach springs and Koni shocks, maybe a sway bar too. Then I'd like to get bigger & better brakes, probably Brembo. I read that brakes can slow 0-60 stopping distances by about 40 feet. So I'm thinking they're a must for autocrossing, which I'm anxious to get into using my ZX3. Then on the power side, I'd love to add a header and cat-back, with a not-too-obnoxious chrome tip, 2.5" max. Maybe a supercharger some day, but that's way down the road.

Just want to say congrats to all of those new ZX3 owners, and to sway those on the fence. I'll have had my ZX3 for 1 month next Thursday and I already have 2300 miles on it. I have only a 22 mile commute to work, but my wife likes taking it on road trips with our two kids more so than with her Sonata. There's actually more back seat room in the ZX3 than in our 4-dr midsize (97' Sonata), so that should say something! I'm liking the car more each day, so I hope those of you still deciding will be convinced and join us few more-than-happy ZX3 owners. But please, no automatics -- that's like having cake with no icing.

I can't believe someone is actually considering not buying the car because of a lack of power windows, but to each his own.
  • fastfocusfastfocus Member Posts: 42
    Hi Everyone,

Today I read a column in the Philadelphia Inquirer by Al Haas, their auto guy, in which he wrote, "You can argue that the ZX3's styling isn't as sporty as it is unusual, but you can't pretend this car isn't sporty machinery. One of the reasons the Focus was 1999's European Car of the Year is its athleticism. The dynamics of this car are stunning. It's hard to believe that an automobile this inexpensive can lay claim to this kind of handling and steering response."

    Sweet review!

Also, I saw a ZX3 today for the first time, in CD silver, and it looked incredibly cool. A great design, IMHO, and more "of a piece" than the sedans. I'm honestly jealous of everyone who already owns one.

On the question of power windows, my two cents is that I could not care less. In today's sedentary society a few twists of the wrist may be more exercise than most people are accustomed to, but I'd rather not have power do-dads in the doors that can break. (Yes, manual windows can break, too, but its far less likely.) To each his/her own, but I wouldn't refuse to buy an inexpensive car like the Focus because of this.

In any case, happy driving to all!

Thanx to everyone's good reviews and experiences with the ZX3 that you're making my 8 more days wait even harder than my two month waiting. In a good note, i'm happy that i've ordered this car without even seeing it or test driving it.

For those of you who have A/C on your ZX3, I have an experiment for you to try. With the car running, turn the temp dial to the farthest Red (heat) position with the FAN OFF. Next turn the fan on, and see if the green A/C light comes on. Mine does it all the time and it seem weird since the heat is on, why would the AC engage?

Also, does anyone know of an aftermarket turbo or Supercharger system in the works yet? And is the eibach suspension kit available yet? How Much?
  • dudleyrdudleyr Member Posts: 3,469
This is normal behavior for the A/C. Rember the best way to defog your windows in cold wet weather is to turn on the A/C and turn the temp up. The compressor will still run to take out the humidity - you just won't get the cold air.

when enough people tell ford what they want, things happen!!

this is an excerpt from www.fordnews.com/zx3.htm--

"The Ford Focus is already selling at a record pace and Ford Motor Company is finding it difficult to keep up with dealer demand. This has caused small delays in popular options being available for the ZX3. However, on or about February 7, 2000, Ford will make available power windows, power remote mirrors, a Convenience Group with tilt/telescoping steering wheel and map lights, as well as an option for speed control available on the very popular ZX3.

According to Julie Roehm Ford Focus brand manager, dealers should be able to place their orders any day now to receive delivery of the new ZX3 with these popular options near the end of February."

What kind of fuel economy are you folks getting on the ZX-3. An earlier post said he was getting 20 MPG at first. I realize they are new and not broken in but is everyone getting around 20. Is that city, highway? Saw the ZX-3 in Malibu Blue. I don't usually like blue but it looks really sharp. If I buy one that will be the color.
  • acartwriacartwri Member Posts: 14
I got approx. 23 city, hopefully it will get better as the engine gets broken in. It went 250 miles and the low fuel light came on. I filled up with 10.5 gallons. So there is approx. 2.5 gallons left when the fuel light comes on.
  • ezavaletaezavaleta Member Posts: 25
On a road trip when the car had about 500 miles on it, I drove 335 miles on about 10.2 gallons, almost 33 MPG. This while doing between 75-80 MPH the entire way.

The MPG for my commute and around-the-town driving is about 25-26. The manual does say something about not trying to gauge MPG until a certain amount of break-in mileage, I think 3000 or 5000.

Needles to say, I'm very pleased with the highway mileage.

Am looking at the Focus and think the hatch is a great bargain, but I'm somewhat concerned that the ZX3 is shorter behind the back wheels than the sedan. Does anyone who bought a hatch wish now they had gotten the sedan instead?

Also, I've driven a Zetec sedan with 5 speed and ZX3 with the automatic, and the sedan's engine seemed much quieter to me on acceleration. Was the difference due to the automatic allowing the engine to wind up a bit more, or is the sedan just quieter?

    Thanks!

One word sums it up: versatility. I have a Great Dane & a labrador retriever. They climb in back no problem, so do my guitars, amps and anything else big enough to not fit in my wife's 4-door Status sedan. It's sportier, more comfortable and costs less! You can't go wrong with this car.

Hey you guys, this article I read here

    http://www.detnews.com/autosweekly/9908/18/lead/lead.htm

said that Ford will offer special "bundles" or packages to the focus buyers, including a gift pack mailed to new owners, and other bundles including a "sports package" with a roof rack, a "pet package" with custom pet bed for the back, etc. I know it's just trendy gimmicks, (not a reason to buy or not to) but wondered if this is true at all or if Ford gave up on it. I thought the roof rack, in particular, would be a nice option that doesn't seem to be offered as far as I can tell. Any owners heard anything?
  • acartwriacartwri Member Posts: 14
Yesterday I picked up my new plates and swiped a copy of the new accessory brochure. All the racks and other add-ons are listed with prices. I think the removable Yakima roof rack was around $100.

I saw a ZX3 with A/C and remote entry for 13.3K MSRP. What would be a good offer?

It was blue with 5 sp. The dealer acted like they all do with manual trans cars, undesirable to sell.

yes they are still doing the packages from everything i have read. they are being considered T4U pakages, or tailored for you. there is a little info on them on the focus247.com site, or u can find out a little more at www.fordnews.com/zx3.htm

As a current owner of the ZX2, I have been eagerly watching the news on the Focus. Here is what I know ...

    1. Test mules of AWD Foci have been spotted around Dearborn, MI. I believe they were 3 doors, but possibly 5 dr hatches.

    2. Roush is supposedly working on a hot Focus. I don't know anything about it. I do know that the ZX2 Fusion was a great idea that never happened. 220hp Supercharged 2.0 Zetec. I think they estimated 0-60 in 5.8 seconds.

    3. Ford is considering an SVT Focus to replace the Contour. Obviously the direct replacement would be a sedan, but maybe a hatch too? No love for V6 fans as all rumors have a massaged Zetec as the engine available.

    4. Ford still hasn't ruled out the Cosworth Focus, or Focus R that graced the cover of Car and Driver to my knowledge. AWD and 220hp for $20K?

I will be selling my ZX2 in 18 months at the most (I'll be 30 and looking for a birthday present). If Roush or Ford makes an AWD turbo Focus, I will buy it without a second thought.

Hope this helps everyone. My "sources" include BlueOvalNews.com; Car and Driver, Road and Track, and Motor Trend.

I am considering lowering my zx3 by about 2 inches (I think the zx3 rides alittle high for my tastes) and perhaps installing 17 inch rims to give the car a more sleek look to it. Does anybody have any info on available springs for the zx3 or any suggestions on some nice looking rims?
  • silyboysilyboy Member Posts: 90
i know there are springs in the works or available, eibach (sp?) i know is working on them as well as Progress Group. As for wheels, if you look at the custom ZX3 wingswest has done those 5 spoke ones are nice (www.wingswest.com)
  • charliemikecharliemike Member Posts: 87
It depends on the bolt pattern. If the ZX3 uses the same pattern as the ZX2 (4x100mm), you can go to the Tire Rack and look at the ones for the ZX2. If it uses the same as the Contour (4x104mm) use the Tire Rack to check them out. They might even have a Focus available in their interactive Wheel Rack section.

Try that site and see. Prime Wheel's #134, which was on the Roush Fusion, are nice and cheap at about $425-500 for 17" on Ebay.

They don't have focus wheels as searchable on their site as of yet.

All Focus fans. Check out www.focussport.com for the latest performance parts. You can get on the mailing list to keep up to date as I'm sure new parts will be designed very rapidly.

Does anyone know where there is a picture of a malibu blue or twighlight blue ZX3 on the internet

I saw a blue ZX3 at Al Piemonte Ford here in chicago area. It had 5 sp and the blue looked nice, I would have gotten it if I had more trade in value on my Contour. Also, I demand ABS.
