Well shame on me for being so cynical of the dealship. I actually learned some useful facts.
-they recommend using only ford brand oil filters because they do not fill with oil when the motor is off which allows more oil to splash around when the engine starts again. Reduces wear. - stay away from Quaker State oil because it has a wax in it that will gum the engine. - do not need to use artificial oil but if you do, change the oil at 5000 miles. Recommend 5000 miles oil changes unless you drive it real hard or dusty. Then 3000 miles is Ok. Avoid waiting 10,000 miles. Seems water if a by product of oil breakdown.!? - do not use high octane gasoline as it will result in a build up of carbon and cause knocking. -do not use dish detergent to wash the car. That will slowly eat away your clear coat and damage your paint job. Only use car washing detergents designed for clear coats. Also waxes too. -If you go to a car wash and get the wax treatment it will wax your windows also making it hard to see at night. To treat, use cloth, water and cleanser (ie.Ajax)on the window to remove the wax. There was some talk about the extended warranty but not much. Mostly they introduced the service reps and spoke about how to make service appointments. They have a quick oil/lube bay where you do not need to make an appointment, average wait is 20 minutes. There was also a drawing for some free oil changes, a detailing kit and a real cool watch in a nice oval ford emblem tin box. They also have not heard about the watch giveaway either. And they said they have the recall parts in stock and are just waiting for me to make the appointment. I'm one happy camper. If you are in South Jersey, stop in Holman Ford, they are a quality act.
Does the zx3 come come with standard silver metallic accents in the interior? Currently, my local (Wisconsin) dealerships only have sedans, and the salesman says "no." I'm not sure that he is right.
I am considering a twilight blue zx3 with a dark charcoal interior.
If the zx3 has standard metallic accents, do they look sporty or cheesy? Do they go well with a dark interior?
Some people just dont get it. For the price of a miata, integra gs-r, prelude, Golf GTI, Eclipse, etc. we could not only buy a focus, but buy enough aftermarket accessories for it to look better, accelerate better, handle more crisply, and have loads more grip than any of the above. I did a little browsing online and found that for less than $8,000, after the price of your zx3, you could give your focus about 230hp, and (just a guess on this one) over .9 g's on a skidpad! Plus, you'd have an awesome Quaife limited slip diff. cool, eh?
Yep, the zx3 has the fake metallic accents standard around the radio/climate controls as well as on the shift nob if you get a manual tranny. Don't what the auto looks like.
I also get shocked everytime I get out of my car. Out of habit now I tough the door with a body part that is covered in clothing everytime I get out now to keep from getting shocked too bad. I actually got the spark to jump about half an inch off the door to my hand.
I heard from somebody that you can get some type of thin strip that is attached to the car (under the car) so it touches the road at all times. This should keep your car discharged... It happened to me many times with many other cars Good luck
silverzx3-how much were the superwhite lights. I think too many people are going to the blue lights and it's starting to look tacky. I really like my friends white lights on his Acura TL. Someone also expressed some concern earlier about the heat generated by the white lights. Any problems yet or modifications necessary?
A tire engineer told me that many cars will exhibit this problem due to the fact that tire makers are using more silica and less carbon black in their tires. This switch is occurring to increase the durability and fuel efficiency of many tires, the downside being the build-up of a static charge on the car as you drive (I guess the silica won't conduct the charge to ground like the carbon black will). Solution - fit one of those conductive grounding straps to the underside of your car, or touch your car with a clothed part of your body when you get out (I usually touch the door with my hip to discharge the "zap").
I also picked up a set of new headlights. I choose the Sylvannia Cool Blue. They are actually bright white more than blue, but since most people are used to the yellow light this might seem blue to them. The amount of light that hits the road is drasticly more than the stock lights, thus imporving your night visibility. I touched the headlight cover after use and they were warm, not hot. I don't think there is too much of a heating problem. They cost $15 a piece so $30 for the set. And you can really tell the difference. My foglights look yellow compared to my cool blue headlights.
My theory on the static shocks is that it's generated by fabric-to-fabric friction between you and the seat as you lean forward to get out. Silverzx3's girlfriend probably wears more polyester than he does.
You might try rubbing the seats with a dryer sheet, or filling a small spay bottle with liquid fabric softener and lightly misting the seats.
Our old office environment used to cause lots of static shocks between workers and keyboards; more than one keyboard has been burned out because of this. Usually one or two workers had the most problems, and they were the sort to wear polyester stretch slacks, etc.
Aside from the usual solutions of anti-static mouse pads, et cetera, there were aerosol spray bottles of "anti-static" guard to spray on surfaces around the workstation. These were quite expensive. One of our techs discovered that liquid "Downy" fabric softener, like you'd put in the wash, in a pump-action plant mister, worked as well and was alot cheaper. It smells nice too! 8-)
As far as the tire theory, I drive a Passat with leather interior, and experience no static shocks. Lots of people on the Passat boards complain about getting static shocks in their cars with fabric interior. (They also claim their seats are lint magnets.) Their cars have the same stock tires as mine, so I figure it isn't the tires.
In case you're wondering why I'm hanging around the ZX3 conferences, well my daughter bought a ZX3 last month. Just to add more data to the age demographics, she's 20. I'm 40.
tires- i noticed the stock goodyear tires aren't as 'black' as previous tires i have owned. could be the aforementioned silica and lack of carbon black... thus the shock. Are we still grounded in the event of a bad thunder/lightning storm??? recall- called my dealer i am scheduled for the 23rd... parts are there. razzi kit goes on tomorrow ... was a delay in getting it painted... metallic accents on dash look pretty good in my opinion & our zx3 is twilight blue w/dark charcoal & its a great color combo! that's it for now!
Static: I get a huge shock every time I get out of my car as well. I touch the door frame to discharge some of the static.
Seats: Does anyone have a lint problem? I tell you my seats sometimes look like one of those lent screens in a dryer.
Perfomance springs: Does anyone know if Eibach is making the performance springs for the Focus. Also, does anyone know if Tokico makes shocks for the Focus. I know that Ford offers these perfomance parts for the Escort ZX2 SR edition.
Update: My recall problem was taken care of when I took my car in for an oil change about a 3 weeks ago. However, I am sending it back under the knife to check the springs again. I think my rear drivers spring is defective. The drivers rear sits slighty lower and it does seem as sturdy over bumps. As well, does anyone have noisy front struts?
Headlights: I like the xenon headlights on those expensive luxury cars. Those lights put out an enormous amount of illumination. Is that the type of headlights you guys are buying?
About the lights. The lights you see on the expensive cars are not the ones we put it. The xenon lights that you are talking cost about $1000 for the conversion kit. So the answer is no. Most of us are putting in bright white halogen lights. Althought my Sylvannia Cool Blue lights stated that they contained Xenon gas, but were classified under Halogen. I don't know if this helps. Igor
The Goodyear RSA's on the ZX3 only have a "T" speed rating, not the higher "H" rating of the RSA's you might see from the Tire Rack. IMHO Goodyear tires are overpriced, and mediocre performers. If you look on the sidewall, you will probably see your tires were made in Mexico, like the car. They were probably a very cost effective choice for Ford.
Some people also don't get that after your 8,000 in upgrades you're also going to void the warranty on every single part of your power train and most likely have some serious reliability problems. And I still don't think it would handle as well as a Type R. And it still wouldn't be as fast as a last gen MR2 or the previous AWD Eclipse, too many traction problems. What mods exactly were you figuring to bump HP to 230? No way you're getting that high without some kind of forced induction, unless you're going to slap in some 15 to 1 pistons. Naturally Aspirated engine + Turbo = enormous pain in the keester.
I'm kind a p'd Off(sorry 4 the language) that i didn't get the metallic accent on my Zx3. Maybe it's bec. it's an automatic. I saw another silver in automatic and it didn't that style. Is there anybody out there who bought an automatic but still got that metallic styLe?
You people are being way too harsh on the Miata. I've got one and you'd be hard pressed to find a better handling, more fun car for twice the money. I paid $19,000 total with air, Cd, and power windows. And don't forget, it's a convertible. Both the ZX3 and the Miata are great deals but they are not to be compared. They are very different vehicles. No matter what you do to the ZX3 it will not have a drop top or rear wheel drive. This is my first rear wheel drive car in many years ( yea, another old guy) and I'd forgotten how much fun they are. If we meet on the street we'll race. It should be close.
I really like the styling of ZX3 so I'm waiting for the ZX3 R, or SVT, or whatever they decide to call it. One of the advantages of being old is you have more disposable income. Oh yea, insurance costs less too.
I also own a Civic HB. It's my big car :> It's a great car but the styling and handling of the ZX3 has it beat by a long shot. At least it's a hatchback and not an SUV. Just ordered vanity plates for the Miata...... NOTNSUV
Just got my watch and it reminds me of Borg technology. :>) Now all I need is an eyepatch and a laser beam. It's black with a black and frosted strap. Will go well with my silver ZX3.From a marketing standpoint this is a good move by Ford. Since their primary target age is the young, this will make a good impression on them and create repeat customers. I'm 53 and I'm impressed.
Got my Baby G today. Brought ZX3 Jan 29. Maybe it depends on whose name comes out of the barrel first? Wonder what I can get out of it on E-bay?
Don't miss rear wheel drive. Can drive the pick-up any time I want to. Plus I drive a rear wheel drive everyday. It's got 8 wheels back there and another 8 on the tanker it pulls. All are 11-22.5's including the other two on the steer axle. It's a blast when it's empty on snow covered roads when no one is around, behind or coming at ya. After parking it I get to get into my ZX3 and enjoy driving it home.
Well, my hatchling arrived in my driveway today. Didn't even mind the rain! I LOVE MY CAR! I am not experiencing any static, but I can tell you that my '89 Escort (may it rest in peace)shocked me for a good 11 years. No big deal. No one could ever find a problem with it that would be causing it, and when an Escort lasts for 11 years you just learn to stop asking questions.
It's good to know there's a class dealer in South Jersey. Just in case. I'm in the area now and then.
Oh, PCleveland -- yes, I had the dual carbs on my Volvo (at least that's my recollection. it was the '70s, man, give me a break!)
Piaa superwhite are the same watt as stock, just more efficient. Their "Superwhite 60/55W xtra" bulbs are supposed to effectively produce the light of a 110/100w watt bulb. (probably a marketing exaggeration) the seem as cool (temp) as stock but put out alot more light. Some people flash their high beams at me. I might play with the aim. very expensive about $80.00 retail for the set. Piaa part # 15660 is a twin pack. No mods are needed, they are a direct replacement for the stock bulb. Piaa also makes a "Plasma" blue bulb that looks like the blue light of the H.I.D. lights on high-end cars. The Piaa Plasma blue bulbs have white (not blue) high beams.
they already have Eibach springs for the focus. they drop the car 1.2". As for the Borla exhaust u might want to just give them a call and see if they have one or how much different one for the ZX3 would be.... I also know u can find one on www.focussport.com and it is rumored that HKS is working on something for the focus too. Roush should have focus perf. parts by 2001.
The Zx3s are beginning to come out of the woodwork here in WI. I saw three of them on my way to work in Hartford today (1 hr drive). Meanwhile, I sit here drooling and reading this message board far too often. My car is on it's way. I've been given a vin # but have yet to hear from the dealer about whether it actually exists. I ordered it in late December and if that dealer isn't just blowing smoke, I'll be driving it this month.
I hope it has the metallic accents that everyone is talking about. I haven't seen the accents on any Zx3s that I've been in.
Best of luck with all of your ZX3s a 25 yr old hatchback enthusiast in Milw, WI.
I purchased my Focus as a commmuter car - I commute 170 miles a day, at 65-70 mph. I'd say yes, it will travel all day long at 80 mph. It is geared nicely too - the engine runs at fairly low rpms at 80. Steepish hills ? Can't comment on that - my commute is fairly flat - 85 miles of highway. Passing requires a downshift - yes, and you'll be very plesantly surprised how nicely the engine pulls.
I had the armrest /center console from the sedan or wagon put in my zx3 .It works and fits great .I have an automatic and my arm rests perfectly between the armrest with my hand on the shifter .My only complaint is that I wish it were a inch or two longer .I can only barely have my elbow rest on the very end and hold on to the very bottom of the steering wheel .But very glad to have it.I drive a lot and allready have over 10K trouble free miles on it.
I bought mine in november and still havent recieved my watch yet??Also mine is an auto with the mettalic accents.
What alf said is absolutely right.. the car can run all day at 80 if you want it to, without making you tired either.. It has great seats, the best I have seen for its price. Also, since 5th is geared quite low, it needs some upshifting maybe to 4th or 3rd if you want to pass on a steep hill.
The engine revs sweetly all the way to 6000 rpm without any hint of strain. I commute for over 2.5 hours each day and it drives great.
chadphx How much did you pay for your armrest and are you still able to fold up the rear seat? I was told that the armrest console is longer than the factory console in our ZX3 and that we wouldn't be able to fold up the rear seat? I hope it does work because I really want one.
Just had the 00E09 recall done this morning. Dealer had the part, no question about my car being part of the recall. In and out in one hour, no charge of course. Car ran perfectly before and after, so I guess it is a proactive "fix" only.
jamers85, I have an auto w/ the metallic accents on the door interior and around the radio. Itis actually barelly noticeable with the light grey interior.
chadphx, Do you have a Ford part number for the console/armrest? Did you have to remove the shifter and e-brake handle? Thank-you
I wonder if your getting a watch has anything to do with filling out and returning the questionnaire or not? Also, are the women only getting the baby G's, they were designed for women? Just thinking.(Always my first mistake)
I am still able to lift the bottom seat cushion and lower the back seats with the new console.Allthough I never had untill you said something about it .The console is a little longer .It still has a cupholder in the rear and some very small slightly recessed area in front of the rear cup holder .Both these things extend into the rear .With the rear seat up it is snug but plenty of room to lower the seat backs. It looks and fits great .I had the dealer install mine and they said it was not that difficult. The part # on my invoice was SPO YS4Z 54045A36 CAC the description was KIT CNSL PNL.My freind at the dealership bought it for me so I dont know how much it cost. But I dont think it was cheap. The comfort is well worth any cost if you do a lot of driving.
There is also a small compartment inside the actual armrest it is to small for CDs though. The entire armrest also pivits up and down.Hope this info helps.
Okay, at the risk of sounding totally ignorant: WHAT METALLIC ACCENTS?? My beautiful Malibu Blue baby hasn't any, and mine is the only ZX3 in the area -- seriously, in a 6 state search, we only came up with 3 other ZX3s! Would the metallic accents be worth investigating or not?
Also, still no word on any recall at my dealership. (and I have an awesome dealer, so I don't think they are "keeping it from me").
One more question: if I decide to go with performance tires (that's a big IF), will I have to get an entirely new wheel base, or can I go with something like Pirelli ps6000 without too much change to my ZX3?
Thanks in advance, everyone! Having a car hasn't been this much fun since my '67 Mustang! (the car after/during the Capri years, for those of you who were paying attention to my earlier message)
I think, no, I wonder if when the Focus is registered with Ford after you brought it has something to do with getting the watch. My dealer told me to register it on owners connection right away (Even though he did his dealer procedure to register it.) because it would get in the Ford system quicker, and I got the watch in about a month and a half. I didn't even know about the watch at the time and I don't know if he did or not. Nothing was ever said about a watch.
HEADLIGHTS: Watch out with aftermarket headlight bulbs. Put GE Super Whites on my old car and the heat burned up the connectors. They were suppose to be regular wattage. The connectors suddenly weren't connecting, turned white and partally melted. Had to get new connecters from a junk yard as thru the dealer I had to buy whole light assembly which I didn't need.
Miata - Don't know how we ever got started on that. The Miata is a darn nice piece of Automobile. A class all its own! It's like comparing Apples and Bananas.
Mr Gimble, If my automatic handles the Pennsylvina hills without dropping out of overdrive to much, the manual you want should make you real happy. I was really amazed, especially considering how I heard the auto was slow and sluggish. If the manual is as much better that the auto as they claim, it must really be something else. 70 is about 2900/3000 rpm on my auto. Ride from western NYS to western Virgina was not tiring at all. Very confortable trip. Pat
I have an auto with the metallic trim (i'm glad its not the wood like on the ZTS) It really is just grey. It looks like plastic. I think there is some confusion because a Ford show car had polished aluminum trim (way cool) people have seen that and think that is the metallic trim.
I got my watch on Feb 29th (picked up car on Nov 30) I didn't fill out anything or even Ford's customer service survey. I think this is a promotion from their HQ. The dealers seem to know nothing about it. I think it is kind of a "thank you" and not a sales incentive. Also if they do not officialy announce it the can end it @ any time without notice. This makes it simple for them. A promotion like this has the potential of being a logistics nightmare. Some times it is best if the right hand has no idea what the left hand is doing.
If the buyer (on the invoice) is a female you will receive a Baby G, if it is a male you will get a G Shock Glide DW-003 (I just bought a Focus Baby G for my girl friend on Ebay for $40.00)
The "sweet spot" on my auto ZX3 is about 80 mph @ about 3150 rpms. We have a 70mph speed limit and you can run 80mph all day long without a problem (ticket). what I mean by sweet spot is kind of like a harmonic balance it is not bogged down or revving wildly the car seems very "happy," smooth & without struggle at this speed. Hard to describe but mechanical people will understand what I am saying.
I too am looking to see how much Ford is going to charge for the Arm Rest. I'll probably call a local deal tomorrow and find out.
I'm also thinking of asking what it would cost to add the Sony options to my Zx3. If you look at the Foci sedan options here at Edmunds.com, you'll see the package. the ZX3 has pretty much everything except the stereo.
If I can part out the armrest, then why not the stereo... Just a thought.
I was in Orlando and I saw, for the first time, a ZX3 with the Wings West Kit and the spoiler. It was in a blue that I did not recognize. I think it might have been a custom paint job. I must admit it looked just beautiful. The guy even put white rims on it and it looked great. The only thing I didn't care for were all of the decals he had on it. I really didnt want to put a kit on the car, but i am slightly considering it because it looks so good.
I got home from my trip and what should I see but the yellow box from Ford. I couldn't believe it, My G-Shock finaly came after all the fuss I made about it. I remember we were all wondering if we were getting the watch to match are car but concluded that we weren't, which is true since my car is pitch black and the watch is gray and red. The cool thing about it is that I'm going with black and red accesories for my car so I was pleasently surprised that the watch is red. Now I have to go and return my new Fossil "Brain" watch that I just bought today, which was dumb of me since a bunch of you had posted that you got your watch this past week. By the way, I a male and my watch is a regular G-shock Glide, not a baby-g, so I was wondering if all of the males got the G-shock and the females got the baby-g? I was just curious and was wondering if any one could confirm?
hey man , I was asking the question about the watch at the same time you were answering it. thanks man. Its a cool watch, but the frame is so cheap, i thought it would be a decent plastic one but whatever, i cant complain, it is something like an 80 dollar watch.
Hey wait a minute. Whats this, I got a Baby G and I'm NO Girl. What gives. Can I send it back and swap? One of you gals got a regular G Shock want to trade for a Baby G? It's off yellow and gray and water resistant to 200 meters. Pat
Espowari-- the armrest will not be a prob for the dealer. The Sony package however is something that they are doing in limited run only on SE sedans. These are not parts that the dealer will really have available. You can however go to your local stereo store and have them build u a system with your choice of components and i am sure it will cost less!!! And then for the interior trim differences and a chrome exhaust tip all u will have to do is shop around for these parts. they are available......
thanks to everyone who clarified what type of metallic trim you got in your zx3. Now i realized that i was really talking about an aluminum one which i saw in the Automobile Magazine. Oh well, i just have to find an aftermarket one and install it. Since i have a silver zx3, that trim would look great in the car. and by the way...i'm still looking for someone to swap there g-shock for mine. I got a light blue one and looking for a black or grey. Sorry baby g's you're excluded in this offer.
With the stock wheels you can go to a a 205/55x15 this tire will be approx 10mm wider (at its widest point which is probably sidewall to sidewall and not tread) and will be approx. the same height. They fit perfect and look much better. Keeping the same height is important to keep you gearing the same and your speedo reading correctly.
Here is the best tire size conversion chart I have found. It is very good.
Thanks, guys! I am finding the tire and wheel upgrade chart helpful, and I plan to investigate all the tires you suggested. I sure don't want to mess with the speedo -- God, I have enough trouble keeping the speed down without not knowing on top of it all! And thanks to everyone who clarified the Metallic Accents issue. I hated feeling like my hatchling had been left out when they passed out the metallic accents. All is well now. Thanks again!
We picked up our zx3 today from Automotive Accents in Linthicum, MD. (sorry had to give'm a plug because thier service and work was excellent!) Anyway, the car looks phenominal! A husband and wife in a new Jag almost broke thier necks checking the Focus out on I-83! Lots of others too but i thought it funny that an older couple in a 80k car would be sooooooo interested in ours!!!

Do they handle long steepish hills with out losing speed?

I have an auto w/ the metallic accents on the door interior and around the radio. Itis actually barelly noticeable with the light grey interior.
chadphx,
Do you have a Ford part number for the console/armrest? Did you have to remove the shifter and e-brake handle? Thank-you
Just thinking.(Always my first mistake)
There is also a small compartment inside the actual armrest it is to small for CDs though. The entire armrest also pivits up and down.Hope this info helps.

I was just curious and was wondering if any one could confirm?

i just have to find an aftermarket one and install it. Since i have a silver zx3, that trim would look great in the car. and by the way...i'm still looking for someone to swap there g-shock for mine. I got a light blue one and looking for a black or grey. Sorry baby g's you're excluded in this offer.
