Just curious...where are you getting this information about the "DPFE (Defferential Pressure Feedback Exhaust) EGR sensor"

Is there a TSB, recall....what gives?

A TSB? Who knows. I had no chance to ask my local dealer.
Some Foci owners report that the stumbling problem went away after the DPFE sensor replacement. Apparently they brought their cars to the dealer with the CEL. The code showed problems with DPFE. I don't know if the dealers will be willing to replace the sensor without the CEL. (probably not)

I bought some Castrol brand rain X and it said to use a paper towel to wipe it off after being applied. The next day when i saw my car sitting in the sun it had scratches. Figures I actually read the directions for once and look what happens.
  • rwgreenbergrwgreenberg Member Posts: 154
Hi. I brought my car in 2 days ago for the stumbling problem. Also, had the CEL light on. (The light came on a day after the stumbling problem appeared.) They called yesterday to say that they replaced the DPFE sensor. I'll pick up the car tonight and let you all know if this fixed my stumbling problem (which was quite severe, so I'll know right away).
  • vadpvadp Member Posts: 1,025
    Found on the net:
"A similar false code may also occur if the metering orifice located in the intake below the EGR valve and DPFE sensor is restricted. This type of problem will not create a trailer hitching condition but loss of fuel economy will be noted."
  • rwgreenbergrwgreenberg Member Posts: 154
Just got the car back with the DPFE sensor replaced and it feels fine now. I'll need to give it a good outing before I'm 100 percent convinced, but it does look like this was the cause of my stumbling problem. Hope it's a permanent fix!
This was my first visit to a Ford service department. Not very impressed. They made me wait around for quite some time when I picked up the car, not at all "customer satifaction" oriented.
But I guess it could have been much worse. They didn't dismiss the problem or ignore it.

Ok, this is a concern of mine because it was a very scary situation, and I want to make sure that nobody else lets this get to the point that it did with me. About 1 month ago I had to take my ZX3 in because the throttle was sticking while I was traveling at about 65mph. If I were to let off the accelerator, it would stay at 65mph !!!
Well after pulling teeth at the dealership, they stated to me that the "throttle body was sticking" and replaced the whole thing. Ok, things seem fine now... only till a few days ago, I was driving under the same conditions and... .my gas petal fell limp to the floor. (found later) the throttle cable had "broken off inside the cable housing. causing the petal to fall to the floor. Not something that was fun to try and realize while traveling 65mph on the highway in traffic. I ponder that this was the problem all along with a tattered cable, I think that it was causing my first problem with the sticking. SO if anyone ever started to get a sticky feeling in the petal... it might not be gum.

I am almost this close to spending some cash to dump my Firehawk tires as I have heard Ford wants to recall more Firestone tires. If the stock market had not killed me last year I would be rolling in some Toyos or Michelins right now. Damm I hate Firestone.
  • scott2078scott2078 Member Posts: 1
Well I filled up my Focus and then started it and look at that the gas gauge and light were still on. This has happened to me many time and usualy stops after about 3-4 starts anyone else?
  • fdthirdfdthird Member Posts: 352
    What "light were still on"??
  • njbongonjbongo Member Posts: 66
Well, I'm not a fan of the stock Firehawk tires either....but keep them till there worn and get you money's worth. As far as the recall, most of the concern was tread peeling off and SUV's flipping over. The chance of flipping a Focus is pretty slim....but it would be funny to see (in a controlled test that is, it's never funny to see anyone get hurt).

Honestly, I had a really old Chrysler that had the tread peel off while I was doing 70...I wouldn't have even known other than seeing it fly by in my rearview mirror. Also, somethin interesting, Car and Driver tried to duplicate this 'rollover' problem on a 94 Explorer...obviously, they can't make the tread peel off, so they duplicated something worse...a blow-out at different speed up to 70mph. Guess what, the Explorer was very stable.

What does this prove? That most people that buy these SUVs CAN'T DRIVE THEM, never mind a car. I see soo many accidents involving SUVs, and none of them have bald Firestone tires on them. Now, I'm not defending Firestone....tire tread should NEVER peel off....but I honestly think there should be a seperate SUV license endorsement or someting to control the growing number of whackos driving around 5000lb wreckers.

sorry for the ranting..............just my 2 cents

    Well said.

No problems with my gas gauge other than that the empty light comes on after i use up 10 gallons. This means it has a reserve of 2.3 gallons? I can never squeeze more than 10 in there.
Make sure you don't have the keys in the car when you fill it up. If you read previous posts, that causes problems.
In the Handbook it says things like Mobil Speedpass may screw up the chip in the key. Does anyone use Speedpass?
Also in my opinion SUVs are such a waste. They offer no performance and the little advantages they offer in inclimate weather just aren't worth the wastes it produces. I drove a 3.4L V6 Explorer and it was slow as hell. Put that engine in a smaller, lighter car and wooosh. Remember the Lumina Z34? and the Suvs keep getting bigger and bigger with larger engines. The lincoln Navigator looks like some kind of military surveillance vehicle. Come on now, whats it get 10 mpg? If they can sell trucks like this why don't they start making muscle cars again? Supply and Demand my friends.

Just read that Firestone has decided to sever ties with Ford, and will supply no more tires after existing contracts are fulfilled. Considering the long-standing relationship between these two companies (the Ford and Firestone families have even intermarried!), it will be interesting to see who will fill the Firestone void.
  • njbongonjbongo Member Posts: 66
Well, if that's true, i'd bet money that goodyear/michelin/bf goodrich take the job...all three are the same company by the way.....I just hope that they pick a BETTER tire than the Firehawks for the 16" Focus's.....these tires really stink in the snow I here.

Oh well, maybe I'll invest in a good set of snow tires before November rolls around again.
  • desertguydesertguy Member Posts: 730
I use the speedpass and it's on my key ring and have no problems. Same with my wife and her 2000 Cougar. I have heard this rumour before.
  • boston14boston14 Member Posts: 111
After all this is it any wonder why they are still in business? I dont know how good they really are as tires makers since I have only had Dunlop,Toyo,Cavalier before my Focus with 1k on it with the Firehawks. The employees must hate telling people they work there knowing they work at a company that most likely killed with their products. Damm, I wish I wasnt so broke to not be able to get some good tires TODAY.

ford to recall 10 to 13 million firestone tires tomorrow. boston14 ,
    you are in luck.

Maybe it's me but I don't have any traction problems w/ my 16" Firestones on my Focus. This past winter, I drove in 6-8" of slushy snow for 100km from Montreal to my home and as long as I practiced some common sense driving techniques for driving in snow, I had no problems. The car tracked straight and true w/o slippage. Even when getting off the autoroute to a service station in the unplowed snow I had good traction. Is it me or have others had bad exeriences w/ these tires in the snow?
  • fdthirdfdthird Member Posts: 352
Never have liked Firestone tires ever since I had a set of the 721 Radials that blew out their sidewall back in the mid 70s. Have had them as OE on a couple of cars since then and have gotten rid of them as soon as possible.
  • silver_bulletsilver_bullet Member Posts: 1,339
It will be interesting to see if other car makers ditch Firestone - just about all Honda Civics come with Firestone tires, for example. After all the finger-pointing and name-calling stops, Firestone may have a hard time giving its tires away...
  • fdthirdfdthird Member Posts: 352
I guess they could just change all the Firestone brands to Bridgestone
  • vadpvadp Member Posts: 1,025
OK the DPFE sensor is not the cause of the mild case of hesitation/surge (no CEL triggered).
Now there's a rumor at the "other" board about a new TSB coming. Supposedly the dealers will recalibrate/reprogram the ECU. Should be out very soon.
  • fgaydosfgaydos Member Posts: 319
I really liked the traction of the stock tires in the snow.
Never even came close to being stuck.

vadp What website is the other board on?
  • zx3beastzx3beast Member Posts: 661
vadp- the fixes you have mentioned were attempted but to no avail. i
am convinced there will be no correction. this is probably an inherent
flaw due to sloppy build tolerances. my manual trans still sounds like
a tractor. upshifts are very noisy and rattle as one goes through the gears. where are you at with your complaints?
  • kebbatkebbat Member Posts: 41
...just came and went. The only thing I don't like about my Z is the odd shape of the change holder located at the top of the dash. It's hard to get change out of unless you're stopped. Since I don't smoke I use the ashtray instead. Oh, I'm not overly crazy about the placement of the cupholders - kinda difficult to get anything besides a can or a small coffee container in and out. In the grand scheme of things, small potatoes. :)

I'm really very pleased with my car. I'm getting what seems to be pretty good gas mileage. My daily commute is pretty short and I don't have much traffic to contend with so I guess that helps. I haven't done a scientific study of what the actual numbers are, but I'm not spending much time at the pump. *thank goodness because gas prices are out of site!!!

Yesterday the mailman had a little gift for me from Ford. A pretty nice Focus stainless steel travel mug.
  • tgrcubtgrcub Member Posts: 22
I know what you mean, Kebbat... I don't use the change holder at all, and I'm afraid to put my toll booth tokens in the ashtray for fear that they will slip into the back, which looks like a nook they might get lost in... so, for right now, I'm using the cup holders as the change depository, as they are rather useless for holding any kinds of drinks... I do like the idea of the free travel mug, though... making amends for installing a worthless cup holder perhaps?
  • fdthirdfdthird Member Posts: 352
have you guys tried pulling out the inserts on the cup holders?? Looks like they might fit bigger items without the inserts.

Nice mug...does it fit in the cup holders?? Didn't think of trying mine yet!
  • jnmartinjnmartin Member Posts: 36
I disagree, the cupholders hold a starbucks venti mocha latte which is the largest thing I need to put into it anyway. But, that's only on the driver's side. The one on the passenger side is partially blocked by the console. Well, to be honest they both are, but the driver's side is less blocked. I've learned that if I need anything larger than the venti than it needs a cap and goes on the passenger side floor - only to be lost underneath the seat, which is impossible to get at when driving - that's my annoyance.

I'm just glad I have 'em, my last car didn't and driving with a hot cup of coffee in hand or strategically placed either between your legs or on the floor is asking for trouble.
  • kebbatkebbat Member Posts: 41
Luckily, while I'm sitting on 95 waiting in mile long traffic to get through the Hampton Tolls I have PLENTY of time to look for loose change and/or toll tokens!
  • kebbatkebbat Member Posts: 41
The travel mug from Ford fits ok into the cupholder, but it's still a bit awkward taking it out. I can't get past the feeling that my drink will fall over. Also, it should be easy to get something out of the cupholder, one shouldn't have to take their eyes off the road to manuever their drink. Not the best design ever, but definitely better than nothing. I remember back in the day when my dad bought those cupholders that had you jam a plastic sleeve down between the window and the door panel. Yeah, nothing like going away on a family vacation while Dad sipped on his Pabst Blue Ribbon. "Hey (insert sibling's name here), please grab me another beer" Luckily, a 5 year old could drink a 6 pack of Pabst and feel no ill effects.

    My how times have changed!

    petedo,

this is the site I was talking about:

    http://www.teamfocaljet.com/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi?action=intro

    zx3beast,

Here is a repost from the above-mentioned board:" got a call from my dealer on 5/18.
He said that Ford has a fix for the hesitation/surge and this will be in the NEXT service bulletin. The bulletins come out every two weeks and one had just been issued."

Regarding the 5-speed tranny. The thing SUX big time. What a junk. I went through the Dispute Settlement Board after 6 visits to the dealer. The boards conclusion: normal gear rollover. **SES!!!! image
  • zx3beastzx3beast Member Posts: 661
normal gear rollover? normal like the firestone tires they are recalling? they got all the answers dont they? norway also reported the same thing about his car as well. they are right though, normal for
the junk trans that it is. those who have stated about receiving a free
mug might want to keep that quiet. someone here is still waiting on theirs.
  • boston14boston14 Member Posts: 111
When it took offically 53 days for me to lock myself out just warming up the car in the garage. Lucky for me I use one of the magnet spare key things that I put under the rear bumper to unlock it. A bad idea wouldnt you say? My impressions so far are once the engine gets going its great and pretty peppy, just no low end torque.
  • kebbatkebbat Member Posts: 41
...do they, or are the supposed to, send these to all new Focus owners? I wasn't expecting them to send me anything. I have registered my car on ownerconnection and I did sent a letter commending my Ford Dealer (it's not always the squeeky wheel that gets the grease) so maybe that's why I got one.

I took out the cupholder insert and that makes the mug fit perfectly.
  • tgrcubtgrcub Member Posts: 22
just wondering if many of you have adjusted that auto-volume adjustment setting... I'm thinking of toying with it, but just can't bring myself to yet... it's only occasionally annoying to go from rockin' to symphony quiet...
  • silver_bulletsilver_bullet Member Posts: 1,339
Kebbat, it depends on when you bought your car, and the luck of the draw. I received the welcome kit with the free G Force watch and stupid little picture frame after buying my 2000 model in February of 2000. I received the stainless steel mug with an apology letter after I had my FIRST recall done. With all the recalls, I guess Ford ran out of mugs :) I, too, registered with Owner Connection, and gave my dealer high marks for the sales experience. Who knows what logic Ford uses to determine who gets a freebie?
  • njbongonjbongo Member Posts: 66
All I did was buy a ZX3 last month (April 4), and I got the mug yesterday in the mail. No complaints at all, and no other interaction with the dealer yet (only 1500 miles so far).

    I'll consider myself lucky...I hope !!!!!
  • pilot13pilot13 Member Posts: 283
Sorry to hear you're having trouble with your Focus--thought you only disliked Toyotas!
Sometimes I wonder about complaints people have with their cars--do you suppose it has anything to do with attitude? Like, those who have the most negative attitude have the most problems?
  • vadpvadp Member Posts: 1,025
    LOL!!!
<<<Like, those who have the most negative attitude have the most problems?>>>
    Pilot, you're cracking me up.

BTW, when did I ever say that I dislike your beloved Toyotas? Another "FACT"? image
No wonder you hated statistics in university. image

So I just cracked 1500, and I'm only averaging about 22mpg. I'm hoping things will change but...
Anyhow, she's doing great so far,
Biggest surprise - functional headrests. I've never been able to comfortably utilize the headrests in anything else I've driven.
Biggest disappointment - trying to keep the damn thing clean! haha Other than that the mpg, but then again I was expecting that from all the past posts.

tgrcub- I played incessantly with the AVC at first, and still show it off to anyone new to the car, other than that I leave it off. I've found that it maintains a volume level relative to whatever you start it at. Kind of neat, but always leaves me wanting more volume, guess I just like it loud. :)

I'd love one of those mugs, I'll try registering with Owner Connection and let y'all know if it results in anything...

    Hi,

Just a few comments at almost 18,000 miles... brake squeak is getting worse, but goes away after the first few applications. This is probably the rust that builds up in wet weather. Brake feel and operation are still excellent.

Keeping it clean: a good coat of wax on the outside, and rubber mats and a good lint brush for the inside... especially good for removing dog fur.

I got my mug back on the first recall in March 2000. Mileage in the mid 20s around town, above 30 on an extended highway trip. Always has been. I like the headrests too, a perfect fit for me, just like the arm position to the steering wheel. And that's without the tilt/adjustable feature.

Other squeaks and rattles? Not that I can tell..my CD player is always on, and quite loud too! :)

I just bought a 2001 ZX3. I have tried to fill the tank at least 6 times. The gas pump always shuts off before the tank is full. The gas guage is showes that the tanks is about 1/8 of a tank short. The dealer replaced the sender unit (sensor) in the tank, but that did not help. Whats the deal? Do any of you have this problem?
  • zx3beastzx3beast Member Posts: 661
see your dealer for free rear brake replacement. its one of those quiet recalls. ford has a new design. they actually do not squeak. ill give them
a plus on that one. also, new design front pads are in the works. you just
have to ask, there has been many a tsb on the squeaky brake deal.
