Funny comments about how comfortable the "head rests" are... considering you aren't supposed to rest your head on them. Those are head restraints, designed to prevent the neck injuries that usually occur when you are rear-ended in a collision. The designers never intended for people to drive around with their heads pressed against the restraints - you are supposed to adjust them so they "catch" your head and prevent rearward travel. If your head touches them during normal driving, either you've got them adjusted wrong, or you have a very unusual driving posture :)

whats the avg. price per gallon of petrol in your state? in philly area were currently at 1.73 for the 87. also, there is real talk of doing away
with the so-called "green gas" here. its about time.

My car is currently in the shop for a couple of reasons one of which it squeaky breaks, and when I called yesterday a service tech told me that all car breaks squeal because they leave "little shards of metal, which rub against each other and cause the noise." I told him that they only started squealing this January and he said, "see, it's the cold and wet which affect the shards."

Now I know that not all brakes squeal as my car is usually the only one making any noise when I come to a stop. So, I know this guy was thinking "dumb blonde, I can tell her anything."

Do you have any more information about the "silent recall." I'm thinking about taking the car somewhere else and then bringing the bill back to Ford and saying, see something is/was wrong.

They've had the car a week and I'm in a mood that is ready to rip someone a new @#$%#^.

zx3beast, here in Houston (land of poor air quality), I just paid $1.52 per gallon for Chevron 87 octane gas. You can be sure we have reformulated fuel here - the Feds watch us like hawks.

jnmartin - You need to tell the a**hole at your dealership to stick those shards where the sun doesn't shine. Ford has been replacing rear brake shoes on drum braked Focii when a customer has legitimate complaints of excessive brake squeal. Call your zone rep, or try another dealer until you find someone who's not in denial.

jnmartin, have Mr. Doofus look at these Technical Service Bulletins:

    99194 dated 09/99
    13462 dated 11/99
    7437 dated 11/99
    8327 dated 03/00
    8574 dated 04/00
    14078 dated 04/00

All deal with rear brake noise.
  • jnmartinjnmartin Member Posts: 36
I knew I wasn't crazy, when I go in today I'll give him/them the service bulletin numbers. My coworkers just laughed and said that the tech was a bleeping idiot and brakes shouldn't squeal, regardless if they are partially metal.

Just to make sure, I have a 01 ZX3 built in Aug 00 - does that mean she has front or rear brakes? And the squeal, I had assumed was coming from the front, but it is loud enough to have engulfed the car and sound like it is coming from the front.

Same thing with my gas tank. When there's still what looks like 1/8 tank left the gas light comes on. I've filled it twice and put in almost exactly 10 gallons. It's a 13.2 gallon tank i believe so that means we have a 3.2 gallon reserve?? Doesn't bother me I think you could probably drive over 60 miles with the light on.
About the clicking when its full- the manual says to let it click THREE times before it will be full. So i have and it is on the full line after i put 10 gallons in. I suppose the best way to find the answer is to let it run out of gas, or really close to it then see if it'll take the 13.2 gallons. If it does just figure you have a big reserve. If it doesn't, we have smaller gas tanks :(
  • silver_bulletsilver_bullet Member Posts: 1,339
jnmartin - the Focus has front AND rear brakes of course! The fronts are DISK brakes and the rears are DRUM brakes (unless you order the AdvanceTrac option and get four-wheel disks). Brake squeal can come from the front or rear, but my guess would be that your rear drum brakes are the culprit.

petedo - aren't you confusing the "three clicks" with what Ford says about tightening the gas cap? Check your manual - I don't think it mentions fueling until the pump clicks three times - I believe it says to tighten the cap until you hear at least three clicks from the ratchet in the cap.
  • njbongonjbongo Member Posts: 66
It IS three clicks on the gas cap....if you go three clicks on the pump when filling up, your gonna have lots of gas running down the side of your car...LOL...and at these prices, DON'T WASTE ANY !!

    later guys
  • petedopetedo Member Posts: 27
got me wondering so i read the manual..
2001 model year page 233-Filling the tank
"allow three automatic click-offs when filling"
Also "when the fuel gauge reads empty, you may not be able to refuel the full amount of the advertised capacity of the fuel tank due to the empty reserve still present in the tank." Just kindof weird that it does it with 1/8 tank still left.
On another note, I'm about to leave for a long camping trip in the Focus. First trip in it. I'm amazed at how much stuff fits in there. I took out the rear hatch cover and rear seat cushion.
Can't wait to see how it handles all the extra weight I put in.
  • silver_bulletsilver_bullet Member Posts: 1,339
Very interesting - like njbongo, I would have guessed that clicking the pump three times would risk overfilling the tank and result in a nice cascade of fuel down the side of the car. Personally, when the pump clicks, I stop filling.

Have a good trip, and let us know what sort of gas mileage you get with a full load of gear!
  • rwgreenbergrwgreenberg Member Posts: 154
    Is this easy to accomplish?
  • njbongonjbongo Member Posts: 66
Wow, that is weird....I will have to read my manual again. I now that when I get my car filled up every time...I tell them not to 'top it off' at all. The first two times, the guy went past the first click, and gas was pouring out all over my car. NOT A GOOD THING !!!

On the other hand, my fuel gauge is EXTREMELY accurate, so I know it's full. I usually fill it at a quarter of a tank exaclty, and it usually take 10 gallons, give or take a half.

I have noticed with the newer cars, (my 95 and 00 Accents as an example) all do the same thing. Go past the first click or two and your dripping. Actually, my 00 Accent is the worst...the gas will actually start shooting back out. Yet, none of these cars have ANY fule related problems.

Oh well, I'll just keep using one click and not complain about it...hehehehe

    click...............
  • silver_bulletsilver_bullet Member Posts: 1,339
Since the Ford service CD-ROM makes no mention of it, I assume it is fairly self explanatory. You should see mounting brackets and/or hinges securing the cushion assembly to the floor, most likely with TORX fasteners.

I'm curious - why do you want to remove it?
  • cgsangelcgsangel Member Posts: 79
    Hi,

Not that I use my head "restraints" as head "rests". But they are angled better in the ZX3 in case of a rear-end collision. Some cars I've had I'd wonder if they would do any good at all since they were too far back to do any good.

But they would work as head rests while not driving, when the seat is angled back.

i will second what silver bullet suggested. there is definitely a new
rear brake shoe available from ford. the noise can sound like it is coming from the front but the rear brake shoes are the culprit. ask to see the gm of the dealership if the service is not to your liking. they owe you the valued customer the proper respect. demand it! are those
loose shards anything like the hanging chads in florida? by the way,the only thing affecting the cold and wet is that guys poor excuse for a brain. he sounds dumber than a sack of screwdrivers.
  • rwgreenbergrwgreenberg Member Posts: 154
Well, I really don't have a particular reason. One of the earlier posts mentioned that he removed the rear seat cushion to create maximum storage room for a camping excursion and I thought it would be a good thing to know how to do (particularly if it was real easy to get out and then get back in).

Will be driving to Ashville in the morning from Philly. Looking forward to calculating my gas mileage as it will be 90% turnpike/highway.

My first long distance trip in my Foci. Fingers crossed.

My wife and I have been looking at the 2001 Focus ZX3's all day at 4-5 different Dealerships here in the Southern Mississippi/New Orleans,LA area.

My wife wanted one in either Silver or Black, with: Manual Transmission (5-speed), Power Groups & Performance Group. She also wanted a Moon Roof.

So far we have yet to find the right combination of these options. And we can't find any with a Moon Roof? Is there a shortage of Foci having the Moon Roof option on the vehicle? Seems like it down here anyway!

We can get a real good deal (and more for our trade-in) if we purchase 1 of the 2 JACKPOT GOLD ZX3's that our closest Ford dealer has on his lot. He said he can discount these because this particular color had not been selling well & has been on his lot forever. This vehicle has all the options my wife wants (and this is to be HER vehicle) minus the Moon Roof (of course).

So, any comments on the Jackpot Gold color? If you have it, or even if you have just seen it zip by? Let us hear your thoughts. We will be going back tomorrow to take a closer look at this color in the sun (hopefully).

    Thanks for any comments!

    Mike & Elisabeth Bunting

Does anyone have a Jackpot Gold Focus ZX3?

We really didn't like the clor at all at first, but may end up buying it because of the discount being applied to it and them giving us more for our trade in vehicle.

Well, I've got to admit, from time to time I do tilt my head back on the restraints while driving. I've got to adjust the rear-view a little, but oh well. I don't drive for very long in this position, but it cradles the head so well, almost therapeutic. I'll have to rethink that one, now realizing what their true purpose is...

mbunting- Don't think I've seen a gold zx3, but the normal foci look just dandy in it. I'm not a big fan of gold, but at least the jackpot gold isn't too garish. Overall, the rest of the car is great! I've got the moon roof and love it, can't keep it closed! At night, with moonlight coming in, it's at its best!
Speaking of that, can anyone solve an age-old question, what's the difference between a moon roof and sunroof?

Beast-I've been avoiding the 1.73 in philly by waiting until I go to my girlfriend's in south jersey (once a week or so), where I've been able to get it for 1.54, although I still can't get used to them filling it for me, especially 'cause I'm so paranoid about them not clicking the cap. :)

Mine is a white ZX3 since its was an ad car. Thank the good Lord, I didnt get black, seems like you have to wash your car every 3 days with black. As for the options on the car I would only get the car in stick because an auto would no way match the character of the sport since to me its handles like a sports car with a rather low horsepower output. The only major package you need is the premium and power package. I got mine for 11,566 which is 2 grand under invoice. Try finding that kind of a deal with a Honda or Toyota. All my cars in the past were Toyota or Mitsubishi. Built Ford tough, I hope its true.
  • cgsangelcgsangel Member Posts: 79
    Hi,

The ZX3 is great on long drives. I've taken five (1000+ each time) and it has performed flawlessly, getting at least 31mpg each time.

I like the gold color but it wasn't available in 2000. It isn't too bright, just right I think.

If you can drive a stick and can live with it in city driving, then go with that. Most people contributing to this forum appear to have the 5 speeds. I had a stick for years (and loved them) but out of necessity went with the 4 spd automatic this time, I have not been disappointed. It is mated well with the engine, very quiet and shifts are hardly noticeable. My car is still fun to drive after 15 months of ownership.

I just got my 2001 focus a week ago. It's malibu blue. (Love the colour, wouldn't have it any other way) Haven't had any problems with it yet but I would appreciate any info on possible problems. I've found this site a few days ago and I'm slowly getting through all the messages. It's great to get this info from "REAL PEOPLE" and not some dealership that tells me what I want to hear. I'd be interested in any info on rust protection. Did anybody buy the rust protection? I did but I'm not sure they did what they were supposed to do. Other than that, I'm happy with the car. I'll keep you posted.

Color is pretty subjective, but I think this is a cool color. It is pretty vibrant, though, not like the Fort Knox Gold on the sedans. Honda offers a very similar color on the new Civic coupe, so it must be the "flavor of the month". If the deal is really good, I'd consider it, but remember, you'll have to live with the car for awhile. I still prefer the CD Silver color on this car - I think silver really works with the unusual shape of the ZX3.

I haven't read of this one yet. on Thursday my clutch pedal spring broke I have no pressure on my pedal, also my airbag light keeps coming on I am taking it in Tuesday I am going to mention the stumbling at two thousand rpms. and the grinding breaks as i have both
  • silver_bulletsilver_bullet Member Posts: 1,339
This is another common problem - so common, that Ford has issued a service campaign (not a recall) where they will replace the clutch pedal return spring AND the clutch master cylinder free of charge if your car falls within a certain manufacturing range. Even if your car is outside of the range, they will replace the return spring if it breaks. The stumble is also all too common, and there is no real fix for it at this time. Grinding brakes and illuminated airbag light they need to fix, for sure - be firm, and make them get it right.

Camping trip got cut alittle short do to large amounts of precipitation. It looks like I got about 20-22 mpg. I probably had a total of 7-800 lbs weight in the car. I used to bring a nissan regular pickup camping, but this has almost as much room and got better mileage. Have to shift alot more, but it doesn't bother me. Gas mileage wouldve been higher but I spent alot of time going around 40 miles an hour because of traffic and tourists.
I give it three clicks at the pump and it never overfills. Reads ever so slighly higher than the full mark on the gas gauge.Maybe theres a difference between the 2000 and 2001s?
About the back seat cushion. I was going to take it off for alittle more room, but everything ended up fitting. You need the TORX to get it off. An allen wrench fits but the screws are really tight, theyll strip. It looks like whoever put them on didnt want them removed. I was thinking about removing it to reduce weight but why bother when the things gotta weigh less than 5 lbs.
As for the person buying a Focus, I'd suggest holding out and getting exactly what you want, color and everything. I waited an extra 10 days for them to find me my yellow 5 spd with the premium group and love it.
About the head restraints.. I spend about 50% of the time resting my head on it. I wish I could take it off then turn it around and put it back in. I think that'd be alittle more comfortable.
  • desertguydesertguy Member Posts: 730
Anyone else think it strange that you cannot remove the front ones? (at least on the 2001) I wanted to put sheepskins on and finally went to the dealer to ask what the trick was and he said they made them hard to remove because people were taking them off permanently. He said I should go to an upholstery shop as they have to get under the fabric from the bottom of the seatback. What a drag! And, since it's my car, I should be able to do whatever with the headrests not that I would leave them off, but if I wanted to........
  • silver_bulletsilver_bullet Member Posts: 1,339
Sure, it's your car, but the lawyers don't want you tinkering with federally mandated safety items like front seat head restraints. They are afraid you'll remove them, suffer a neck injury in an accident, then try to sue Ford for making them removeable... you know it would happen. With as much stupid litigation as we have in this country, and the corresponding lack of personal responsibility, we should probably be thankful that we are still "allowed" to own cars :(

Hey all. I am in the market for a new car. I have had my eye on the ZX3 hatchback since its inception, but I was waiting for my old, boring S10 pickup to die.

Well, with the grim reaper shortly visiting the S10, I am seriously considering the Focus. I sat in one at the Detroit Auto Show this year, and thought it was nice, but was a little concerned about head and leg room for the bigger person (I am about 5'11 and weigh about 200 pounds, which isn't huge, but am definitely stockier). Are there any Focus owners out there who are stockier and have found that, over a period of time, that there is sufficient room?

Thanks for any advice. I think I am going to test drive tomorrow...

Belive it or not, I bascially sold my 2000 Mitsubishi Galant for the Z because I just loved the interior room and it actually felt a lot room comfortable than the Galant. Its a joy to get in and out of the car due to the high seats. It a great car, just hope it lasts 150k as I have decided the only way to get your money's worth with anything on wheels is to drive it till Friends goes on Nick at night.

I always thought it was only I who was annoyed at New Jersey's "law" which doesn't allow a motorist to fill his/her own tank but I guess not. What is it w/ Jersey? Don't they feel drivers are competent enough to fill their own tank w/ gas? I once got into an arguement w/ a station attendant 'cause he wasn't out right away so I filled my own tank (at the time I wasn't aware of the law). The guy just about had a hissy fit! Now, I never get gas in Jersey if I can help it. I always fill up before or after. I find many gas station attendants drip gasoline on the side of the car and I had one friend whose paint was chipped 'cause the attendant hit the fender w/ the hose nozzle. I'll do it myself as it's not worth the hassle. Just my .02 cents.
  • boston14boston14 Member Posts: 111
I dont get it either. Pumping my own gas doesnt take a college degree right?
  • fdthirdfdthird Member Posts: 352
I agree...a real pain. It is however a lot cheaper than pumping yourself in NY.
  • silver_bulletsilver_bullet Member Posts: 1,339
I can't speak for your neighborhood, but gas prices at my local Chevron dropped just as the holiday weekend was drawing to a close - regular went from $1.55 to $1.44 per gallon in one day. Pardon me if I sound cynical, but this sure looks like typical "supply and demand" pricing to me, and seems to have no bearing on world oil prices, production issues, etc. Let's hear it for those wonderful oil companies... Mr. Cheney, are you there?
  • kebbatkebbat Member Posts: 41
Normally I would just say "gas", but saying Petrol just sounds so much cooler.

It was $1.78 on Thursday afternoon and it was $1.78 this afternoon. Thank goodness I don't have much of a commute.

I purchased a jackpot gold ZX3 about one month ago. I like the color, it does not tend to show "dirt" and have been complimented it. However, I would not under any circumstances recommend the purchase of a Ford Focus to anyone - even if it was the last car on earth. The initial quality was horrible. It has a burning oil odor from the engine coming through the air conditioning and vents. It has strong gasoline odor coming from the rear of the car. It has groaning horrible noises from the front suspension and brakes when letting up on the brake pedal. It has rough idling. The seat belt cuts across my neck no matter now I adjust the belt or the seat. (Probably just me.) And finally, the driver side window squeals like a siren when the window is lowered (power).

The dealer only offered to spray deodorant in the air conditioning vents and says that everything else is normal. I am currently searching for a dealer go actually fix the car and have contacted Ford Customer Relations. The next step is an attorney.

You can do better than this.

Do you know where I can find more info about adding power to my future ZX3 S2? I am looking for a big, busy, bulletin board. So far Club Focus and Focaljet do not satisfy me. I am looking for something as busy as www.i-club.com (for Subaru Imprezas and WRXs).

I was thinking of putting in a hot cam and exhaust headers, because FocusSport's dyno charts show they offer the biggest gain. I don't want to turbo. Do you know about this stuff? Hey, I was born in Houston and lived there for 10 years.
  • boston14boston14 Member Posts: 111
yeah, I feel your bang about buyers remorse. Didnt you know that Ford cars always have the lemon "risk". I took my chance and feel really good so far.
  • silver_bulletsilver_bullet Member Posts: 1,339
Sorry, other than Focaljet, I'm not aware of other boards familiar with hot rodding the ZX3 - maybe try looking for folks modding the Zetec in the ZX2. The Subaru crowd is pretty active, and they certainly don't lack for enthusiasm... but sometimes they strike me as just a bit defensive, and a little bit too wrapped up in their marque... Subarus are okay, but they aren't THAT special - not even the WRX. I looked closely at the WRX, ordered one, then passed on it when it came in.

As far as modifying your ZX3, here's my $0.02 worth - don't bother. Other than replacing some of the low quality parts with aftermarket (the brakes and shocks come to mind), I'd just trade for an SVT when they finally appear. The parts of the stock ZX3 that need replacing are too expensive to justify, but the factory will do it for you in the SVT (Cosworth modified Zetec and Getrag sourced six speed transaxle). Plus, the under car catalyst will yield much better breathing on the exhaust side, and I doubt you'll be able to convert the stock Zetec to the SVT set-up. Pay your $$ and take your choice :)

I have to agree with all of you on the NJ gas thing. About 2 days after I picked up my Focus (in April 2001) I went to my local Mobil station. They had some new kid working there who was really busy. He took the nozzle and shoved it in my car so hard, it actually shook the whole car. I almost got out and whacked him in the head with it. To top it all off (no pun intended), he spilled about 1/2 gallon of gas on the side of the car. I go to this statation EVERY time I fill my car up, so they know me there. I ended up getting the gas for free after complaining the the owner later that day (he wasn't in when it happened).

Call me crazy, but I baby all of my cars, especially when they are new. Things like this really tick me off. It seems that very few people share the respect I have for property (mine or otherwise). When I was a little punk back in high school, I worked part time pumping gas. Never in my life would I even dream of treating someone elses car like this.

The point is that the law is STUPID...it would also save people from waiting in all the long lines at the pump in the morning.

    just venting........sorry for the ranting

    I purchased a Focus ZX3 on 2001-05-14 and
    registered at the Ford www.ownerconnection.com
web page the following day. The recall service
on this web page listed a Ford voluntary recall,
00S55, for the outboard hinge on the left rear
    seat back on my Focus.

The following week, 2001-05-22, I got a postcard
from my dealer recommending I schedule the recall
work on the same number, 00S55. I logged on to
the web page to confirm the notice there and my
postcard matched. The web page no longer listed
any outstanding recalls for my car.

So I called the dealer service department. They
checked my VIN against their data and stated that
my car had received the required service on
2001-05-15 -- the day after I bought the car.

I know the car wasn't serviced on that date. It's
possible the work was done before I took delivery
but only entered into the dealer's data base on
2001-05-15. Anybody know how to confirm the
hinge recall service by visual inspection?

Other than this little mixup, my new car is fine.
I believe all the stories about serious lemons
because I've used and owned Fords and Mercurys
since 1966, but my Focus hasn't displayed any
lemony symptoms yet. First tank of gas got 28
miles per gallon (US) in city driving.

Yesterday, 2001-05-29, I got my stainless steel
Ford Focus coffee mug in the mail. I'm a happy
    driver so far.

ottos, just out of curiosity what don't you like about focaljet?? They've been pretty informative to me.
Silverbullet true the SVT will be a better, less expensive pick but they'll only be available in limited numbers. Also you dont get the fun of modifying and removing stock parts that were put in cheaply. Example- you have to cut the cat back in half to remove it. I like spending time with my car so I don't really mind. Actually if I had the choice I'd want an SVT and a regular ZX3 :) oh a yeah and a ZX5 too.

Who is into motorcyles? Why the hell are Ducatis priced like cars? Does anyone see the appeal of a Harley? I dont for that price. I own a Suzuki SV 650 and Its just fine. That is my first bike and its a standard. I wonder all the time what it feels like to drive a crotch rocker like a Ninja or CBR900 etc etc. Negatives about biking are bad hair all the time, got to change clothes too often. Who wants to race against my SV?

My main gripe in my first month of ownership has seem to disappear. No more slight sound from the rear left wheel. I will still get it checked out in my scheduled three month check-up. Bad news though, my antenna mast( the little screw part) got broken and i was clippled my a NYC transit bus and partialy broke my wonderful plastic driver side power mirror. I have to order both the mirror and mast and will get them installed when i go in for scheduled maintenance. New gripe, my gas milage seems to to either be really good or at times it just seems that the focus is eating a lot od gas. This weekend, i am going to see how much MPG i am actually getting.I am sure i am not getting antyhing near 30mpg. Luv di Foci.

I gave up bikes about three years ago when I sold my '96 Triumph Daytona Super III. That was my flirtation with two-wheeled cruise missles. I've owned three Harleys, but have never owned a Duc. Why do they cost so much? Partially due to the exotic materials and complex assembly, but mostly because people will pay that much - same as with any lust object. I enjoyed my last Harley (a Heritage Softail), but can't see myself ever spending that much on a bike again. Living in hot, flat, crowded Houston, a bike makes no sense to me, so I'll probably never ride again unless I move somewhere more tailored to two-wheeled vehicles.

Yesterday morning I paid $1.83 for regular here on Long Ilsand. Last night I went by the same Exxon station (and it is the cheapest within a 2 mile radius) and the price was now $1.85!

Just got my new ZX3 and would like to find some good, functional floor mats. Also looking for suggestions for a cargo mat that would fit the area when the back seat is folded down. Thanks.
  • cgsangelcgsangel Member Posts: 79
    Hi,

If you want some good functional floor mats, try the rubber mats from your Ford dealer's parts dept. I got a pair for the front only but you can get some for the rear too. I don't know about the cargo area when the rear seat is folded down. I've used an old blanket with the old mats from the front underneath for the cargo area.

I got mine this winter and they are great for catching the sand and junk that goes right into the carpet. They are made to fit the Focus and they wash right off. They are quite heavy so they should stand up. I think they come in three colors... gray, black and one other... I forget. But I got black because it goes great with the black highlights inside. If I remember correctly, I think I paid $42.00 for the front pair. That's high compared to getting a complete set at an auto store or a place like Wal-Mart, but then they are made to fit the Focus, and they have the Focus logo in white.

One thing was that the driver's hold down didn't work with them until I broke out a plastic plug in the hole in the mat. Someone else gave me the idea to fix that, but it's easy to fix and they stay in place great.

If someone knows a way to make the surface of the back bumper look good after it's scratched, or knows of a protective cover to put on it... so far no one has any answer other than touch up paint. It's really the only part of the car that is showing its age, except for the few dings on the sides where doors miss the black protective molding. And there's nothing I know of to make that look right once it's happened. Too bad because the paint has stood up so well after 15 months of ownership.
