I'm sure this has been metioned before:

Go to www.focaljet.com or www.teamfocaljet.com and select the Forums section.

Lots of great info organized into categories. I like it a lot better than Edmunds layout.

Yes, the Focaljet group is great. But let's keep this one going too! It's great too in its own way.

    for two reasons:
    1) Virus scare (my computer is company owned, and I can't take the chance)
    2) It won't do any good. Ford does not listen to their customers - most of us have discovered that through Focus ownership.

I have a dealer offering to sell me a S2 ZX3 with moonroof, abs, side airbags, pwr group, premium group in Liquid Grey for $15,600 out the door...have also been considering an Elantra GT (which is not a bad ride either)...any thoughts or suggestions welcomed.

After approximately six months spending a disturbing amount of time on the Internet. I bought a Focus ZX3. I drove the Elantra GT, Corolla LE, and Sentra SE. I chose the Focus for some very nonscientific reasons: 1)Fun to drive
2)Styling and 3)$1250 rebate. Mine is a 2001 Infra Red, Power grp, Premium Grp, Moonroof, Anti-lock brakes, Side air-bags. Sticker: $15,885. I paid $13875 after the rebate. Dealer fees/plates added $120, then 6% sales tax on top of that. There was little haggling. Could I have done better? Maybe, the problem was that I wanted a specific car. There were only three in a six state area around Western PA. I am happy with the deal and the car. After coming off four Toyotas I pray there aren't many problems. Hope this helps.

... but a dealership service department that is competent and caring is one of the keys to happy Focus ownership. We recently test drove the Elantra GT, and while I liked the design and features for the price, IMO there is no comparison re: handling, steering, and the "fun to drive" factor - the ZX3 wins hands down. I never thought I'd pick Hyundai reliability (an oxymoron?) over Ford's, but my experience has taught me lots about what's wrong with FoMoCo. It all comes down to what you value most - and if that Liquid Grey ZX3 you are considering has a five-speed, it sounds like a nice car to me.

He's now down to $15,500...think I'll go for $100 more...This dealership is located in an area of retired people (Crown Vic's are their specialty)...lotsa Foci on the lot so maybe he'll come down more.

The only thing really holding me back is my concern for reliability of this car...Reading through I see some people plagued with endless problems while others are motoring along trouble free...Gotta wonder if Jose was having a good day the day this car was built.
  • boston14boston14 Member Posts: 111
its good to hear some comments that the zx3 can handle as well as a Elantra GT. So far still after 5 months no trouble at all. No creaks or rattles and even better assembled than my old 2000 Galant. I think when its time to replace the tires I will not go with the 50 series tires. Just too rough a road over long distance. Only gripe is gear lash in the lower gears under 20mph.
  • boston14boston14 Member Posts: 111
a Nissan Sentra 2.0 SE and the zx3 has a smaller turner radius and feels more sporty. The svt focus should be one heck of a toy. The stero sounds better than my home system.

Ok...dealer tells me the offer of $15,500 out the door for a S2 liquid grey car with abs, side airbags, pwr group, premium group, moonroof is his best deal?...Could choose to wait but also car could be sold in the interim (somewhat unlikely though)...Comments?

well, my car was spanked pretty hard by a car a couple of weeks ago and yesterday I dropped it off to be patched up ... the dealership rental office put me in a 2001 Focus SE stationwagon ... quite a big difference from my little Z!!! It's odd going from a manual to an automatic .... and I nearly got clocked trying to get onto the highway yesterday .... definitely not as much "giddyupandgo" in the wagon.

I can't wait to get my car back!!!
  • guyindasky1guyindasky1 Member Posts: 11
Well I took the plunge and bought and picked up my S2 ZX3 today...keepin' my fingers crossed on reliability...Tis a hoot to drive.
  • boston14boston14 Member Posts: 111
did you get the car in stick?
  • markrnmarkrn Member Posts: 9
I have an S2 automatic and while under the car changing the oil i noticed right where the transmission bell housing mates to the block their appears to be a port / viewing hole on the bottom. What is the purpose for it and there is no plug present and does there need to be. Any info is appreciated. thanks
  • guyindasky1guyindasky1 Member Posts: 11
Boston 14 I got the stick...really do like the color now...rides so nice and smooth...Well in comparison I was driving (and still kept) an old (89) Toyota pickup with 142,000 miles...still runs great but is bouncy noisy ride.

Has anyone purchased the extended warranty plan? I'm looking at the 6 yr 75k mi plan. I know that you can haggle over the price of the warranty just as you can the car, but I can find any independent data to determine what a fair value is. Furthermore, does the price change by region? Labour rates in NY, NY might be higher than in Great Plains, MT.

    Hey folks,

Does anyone know where/how to get the collapsible color keyed mirrors that are on the euro spec focus? I don't know why ford dropped for the US, obviously from reading these posts it does happen that mirrors get bumped. I'm actually on vacation in Italy and the more I look at the euro focus the more I wish I had one. It's just sportier looking and the bumpers have cleaner lines. There's also a turbo diesel here that's not too shabby. I like the rear fog light and the amber directionals...ok I guess I like it all. Yes I know...whine whine whine...if I can't find the mirrors online I guess I could see about getting them here in Italy but everything is closed in august for vacation....so fat chance.

RE: Extented warranty. I think I paid 800 for mine...6yr 100k bumper to bumper $50 deductible. I love the car, and if it was japanese I would have skipped the warranty, but it has it's flaws and the 800 is well worth the piece of mind. Not to mention the rental you get for free for *any* warranty repair. If you intend on keeping it for more than 3yrs/36k then I strongly reccomend it.
  • silver_bulletsilver_bullet Member Posts: 1,339
fdanna, the upcoming SVT Focus will have the body color, folding mirrors, so they will soon be in the U.S. parts system. You will probably have to have them painted to match your particular car, though. I agree - I wish we could opt for the cleaner Euro bumpers and rear lighting clusters... they are very slick.

Sorry to hear some of the misses from the Zx3. Its seems to be a crap shoot whether the car is problem prone car. Mine with 2,500k in 5 months have no seen nothing to make me complain. On a side note, I have just bought a car on EBAY. Its a 93 Infinit J30t for 7900 with 76k. I know what you are thinking and hell, just look at the new focus owners and their troubles, and the Focus were new! So maybe mine will be just fine. Who has driven a J30? 210hp is fine by me.

My 2000 zx3 with auto reached the 20,000 mile mark during a 700 mile round trip between North Carolina and Maryland. No problems on this trip and made it on two fill-ups. I visited my sister in N.C. and she drove it all the time I was there. She said it was fun to drive.

She has a 2000 Nissan Sentra stick but we took mine out every time, for the three days I was there. She lives out in the country so she opened it up on the twisty back roads. If I lived there instead of the city, I might have opted for the stick, but she admitted that city driving isn't alot of fun after a while with her stick. Fortunately for her, she only goes to the state capital a few times a month. But she says she loves driving her Nissan too. She's only 5 feet tall but she had no problem finding a comfortable seating position in my car. I imagine that her Nissan was probably a better fit for her.

WOW! I'm at almost 14k in 8 months! I assume that you take public transportation or live close where you work.

Winter is coming and I'm looking forward to playing in the snow with my car :-)

Oh by the way, I had a focus SE for a rental and man, what a difference. First it was an automatic, which I hate. Second, the quality of the materials inside seemed lower. Third, the handling wasn't nearly as good with the smaller tires and lastly, the seats had ZERO support. ZX3 or upscale 4 door is well worth extra $$.

Even with it's quality problems, the focus is still the number one selling car in the world...yes..the WORLD. Maybe ford can invest more money into the small car market by takeing the HUGE profit margin from SUV's and fix some things.

I just had some careless ***-hole knock off the drivers side mirror on my 2001 ZX3 last night. I had to cut the cables as it was just hanging on the car. Luckily I was able to polish out the scuff marks from where it hit the A-pillar. The good news is that the replacement assembly & the inside adj. knob is only $39.44. I recall someone here saying they had to pay $200 to replace theirs - what's with the discrepancy? Anyhow, I would love the euro mirrors too as well as some rubber floormats. I go to London a lot and also love the euro spec bumpers though here in the US we have to have higher impact rated bumpers hence the larger ones we have.

I am beginning to worry about my fuel economy yet again. My gas light routinely comes on at 230 miles.

What is Ford supposed to do about this? I really would like to know the steps other people with poor economy are taking to fix their situation.

I need some guidance, in case anyone has replaced their license plate lights. One of my lights went out. I checked the owner's manual....no hints as to how you take out the lense. It appears that you have to pry it out, but I am hesitant to do that, not wanting to damage the lense or the bodywork. Anyone have any insight ?? Thanks !!

I'm wondering if the problems with the Focus is mostly with the first year (2000) models. I bought my 2001 ZX3 about 4 months ago. Currently at about 4500 miles, it's still running strong. No major problems, though there are a few minor complaints: the loose stitchings on the back seat which was fixed under warranty, the manual transmission "tractor noise" when running under 2000 rpm, and the rear suspension creaking noise. Overall, it's a good car. If only Ford can somehow solve the "tractor noise", it would be a perfect car. Gas mileage is nothing spectacular, but it has gradually improved as the miles add up. Currently getting lower to mid 20s mpg for mixed city/highway driving. Got 30 mpg during a recent trip to New Orleans which was mostly interstate driving.

Check out the forums at focaljet.com, and you'll see the problems continue on into the 2001 model year. Supposedly, another recall (involving the wiper motor) is pending, and affects mostly 2001 cars. "Job 1" continues...
  • boston14boston14 Member Posts: 111
that is the only thing that I dont like so far. I have it too and it is awful around slow speeds. Driving on small streets is most noticeable. Been thinking about a SVT focus lately. Recently sat in a Sentra SE-R and thought it lousy interior room, would not buy that even under invoice.

I am actually getting rid of my ZX3... :(
  • zx3inbrzx3inbr Member Posts: 2
Checked the NHTSA page for any recalls for 2001 Focus. Found 3. 2 of them applies to the ZX3. One's for the split 60/40 rear seat and the other one on the wiper switch. Guess it's pitstop time for my ZX3. Gotta check if those recalls applies to my car, and I'll check on the creaking rear suspension noise. Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, SUV and trucks are Job 1 for most car companies now. Hopefully with the rising gas prices, they'll pay more attention to small cars.

About the tractor noise, I had read somewhere that it is the same transmission used in the SVT Contour. Ford had issued a service bulletin, but no recalls yet. This is one recall I'd really like Ford to do. In the mean time, I'll just crank up the CD player and pretend the noise is not there :) If I had to do it all over again, I'd still pick the ZX3. The alternatives would be a strippo Civic DX or Corolla CE, Toyota Echo coupe, Daewoo Lanos, Kia Rio or Hyundai Accent.

Oh well, the original factory warranty expires at about the same time my lease expires. If my ZX3's reliability becomes iffy by then, I'll have the option of returning the car at the end of the lease. Hopefully the ZX3 holds up well and I won't have to do that. But if not, I do hope GM will bring over the Opel Corsa as the replacement for Chevy Metro.

I have been thinking of saying goodbye to my z as like others. I have been getting tired of the tractor sounds at low rmps and speeds and now want a more refined small car. Mabye being in the Civic herd might not be bad.
  • focusmatt2focusmatt2 Member Posts: 106
The reason I'm getting rid of mine is because the steering column shake hasn't been fixed in the 17,000 miles I've had the car.

I am so upside down that I am having to buy a used car now. I am going to go back to being a European only buyer.
  • boston14boston14 Member Posts: 111
Check out the new Altima and Camry. Pretty impressive and the Nissan has a 4 cyl that has something like 170hp. I want one too. Still the SVT Focus has some interest for me, the room in the little hatch is just that good.

So you do mind the low speed, low rpm tractor noise that sounds like a Uhaul carring the entire Chicago Bears football team?

So you do mind the low speed, low rpm tractor noise that sounds like a Uhaul carring the entire Chicago Bears football team?

It isn't a mechanical problem it is just a annoyance.

Ford I think issued a fix for the noise. it has something to do with the springs that dampens the clutch and the transmissionthey are too weak to keep the gears in consant contact with one another, and you will hear a sound like tractor at low rpms until the slack is gone.

I will try to get the service buliten number for you. hte revised springs are on the 2002s.

    M/Trans Diagnosis
Customer reports a gear type noise (gear roll over) at lower rpm when first starting out and knocking at idle. Check and advise.

"Road tested & verified concern. Ran oasis and found SSM #15102, need to remove the transaxle for inspection. Recommend to perform SSM and recheck."

    SSM #15102

"The fix is a new clutch disc with softer springs to dampen the gear roll-over knocking....I have 100miles on it and lots of stops and starts in high heat...and no noise...will be updating my post concerning this issue once i get more miles on it...hope this helps"

    Hello,

I guess I should say first time poster long time reader of this board.

I have decided to take a spin of the roulette wheel of Focus ZX3. I was wondering about peoples impressions on ordering a car from Ford.

I have been speaking to the sales dept at my dealership and they say if I want to get a 2002 ZX3 I should order it. Is this the way to go? I am not looking for anything particularly special in terms of configuration. Is there a price advantage to ordering rather than waiting for it to be on the lot? eg: negotiating the holdback, etc. and I have been told that I would have to put down a good faith deposit. I am feel kinda weird about this but I could be wrong.

Looking forward to being a ZX3 owner.
  • focusmatt2focusmatt2 Member Posts: 106
As much as I love my ZX3, I have to get rid of it, as I've already said.

I would stay away from 2000 models. I believe the 2001 models have improved somewhat in terms of reliability. It's such a shame, too...

Just waxed my car before the cool weather arrives. Still a wonderful car after twenty thousand miles and a year and a half of ownership.

Still the best small hatchback available out there for the money. I have the automatic, which has been as smooth as silk. Either I'm doing city driving or long distance highway driving. So the fun shifting a stick gets tiring in the city quick, and once I'm at highway speeds, I'm not doing any of that. I've owned 4 standard shift vehicles, so I know the good and bad sides of those.

I just look at the lack of room in other small cars and I can't wait to drive or ride in mine. And I still have the maneuverability in tight spaces too that comes with a small car.

Year 2000, auto, anti-lock, autumn orange
Purchased off the lot in Feb. 2000.
4 Recalls completed, no other problems except for a leaky windshield washer filler and squeaky brakes when wet. The brakes will be fixed when the pads need changing, sometime down the road. I got the extended warranty for the long haul. After that I may want something new and different, and by then we may have alot more to choose from.

Will add snow tires this year too for my driving north.

    Hey Jooky...

speaking from my own experience while purchasing my ZX3, I had an enormously hard time finding a dealer that would quote a good price on an ordered car... every time I came in to finalize the deal and place an order, they hit me with an increase in the delivery time, a change in financial terms, and the usual dealer runaround... of course, they'd then try to get me to look at a ZX3 that wasn't what I wanted, but just in etc etc... so best of luck in trying to go that route...

As for my question, I have a yellow 2001 ZX3, and I'm wondering if anyone else is having a problem with the paint job... I've already noticed a few very small chips in the finish on the hood of the car... needless to say, after only 3k miles, I'm not too thrilled about this... anyone have to raise this issue yet?
  • fdthirdfdthird Member Posts: 352
We ordered my son's Focus last spring. Probably placed the order in mid-late January and the car came in the end of March. Absolutely no problem on firming a price (and I have ordered 3 new Fords in the last year and have had no problem getting a firm price on any of them)and yes, I did give a $500 deposit when the order was placed.

Now, speaking about delivery times...a good dealer should be able to give you a fairly accurate estimation of when you can expect the car. A salesman who just wants to tell you what you want to hear will give you a very un-realistic time frame (like 4 weeks) if he thinks that will close the sale. A salesman who wants you to buy what he's got on the lot will tell you a tall tale about getting a factory order in.

Have you attempted to have the dealer look around area dealers and work a trade for you??

    Good luck

that is not correct the recall only affects modles built between january 2000 and june 2000.

    no 2001s.

Has anyone had trouble with it taking a couple of tries to get your car started sometimes? I have had mine since August, and there have been several times that it doesn't seem to want to start right away. This morning it took 3 tries, and it seemed very reluctant when it finally started.

so I get my bill today for my 2001 ZX3... and what's inside? a coupon for car rentals from Hertz... are they trying to tell me something?? *giggle* GOD!! what poor decision making... stunning, really... but that's our Ford!
  • silver_bulletsilver_bullet Member Posts: 1,339
If my experience is typical, and I think it may be, you'll need that coupon. All the recalls and niggling repairs made to our ZX3 have been covered by the warranty (except for the proactive replacements I elected to make myself), but the rental cars have been on my nickel - and that still ticks me off.
