Hello - this is my first post though I have been reading here since September. I ordered a 2001 focus Oct 1st from the factory & received my VIN# last Monday... only 2-3 weeks left until delivery & I am getting pumped! I ordered a black ZX3 with sunroof & premium group, ABS, side-air bags, etc. Does anyone out there have a just delivered ZX3? Are they clear of the recalls that affected the 2000's? Any recomendations for a new owner - besides enjoy the ride!?
  • tickbittytickbitty Member Posts: 250
Just got back from England and saw many, many foci! Nearly all were the 4 (or 5) door hatchbacks. Also a few ZX3. No sedans. I still prefer the look of the ZX3 over all, though I certainly understand the desire for the extra doors.

They have so many other neat options over there for neat hatchbacks and other compacts. Cool little Vauxhalls, peugots, etc, and some really funky little bitty mercedes SUV type bubble cars. They also have our ZX3's kid brother, the Ka! Neat stuff. Interesting color choices, too.

Howdy ya'll! I just bought a '00 White 5-speed of the showroom loaded with Tint,Exhaust Tip and a Spoiler! Never seen one with a spoiler before that's what made me look at it. I wanted either Black, Silver or Yellow, but I took one look at it with Tint and Spoiler and I was sold. Anyway, just wanted to get some reactions to what ya'll might think to a ZX3 with a spoiler and an aftermarket dealership tip.

    Thanks!

P.S. I've been following these posts for a few days to get some very good feedback on these cars. The recall info was very helpful and I made not of my car's production date of August '00. Hopefully all the bugs are out of mine.
  • brianinmassbrianinmass Member Posts: 4
I can't be sure about the recalls, but odds are since its a 2001 that you're getting, you'll soon enough get your own recall or two. I've driven my 2000 black ZX3 for 26,000 miles so far and am still amazed by this car (the recalls don't bother me - heck, they're addressing the situation, right?). It really is a lot of car for the money. As is, it suits damn near everyone, and it can be modified if you have to beat civic's off a stop light.
BTW -Dan, I mean damon albarn/abnormal: You might want to put a BLUR sticker on your car. I did. Big Yellow one I got a couple years back. Enjoy!

Well from what I've seen I guess I'll have to wait 11 to 12 weeks for my ordered ZX3! I can't BELIEVE it's going to take that long. If I have to wait that long, I might start to rethink my "egg yolk yellow" decision...uh oh...

I ordered mine in the beginning of November and I had hoped to see it by Christmas but now I guess I can only hope to get it by my birthday in January :(
  • kdominczakkdominczak Member Posts: 174
Well, Ford is not treating the hatchback market serious enough, and that's why you'll have to wait for it that long.
If there is that much interest in buying Focus hatchbacks (for over 12 months now!), Ford should start building those cars in the other plants(other than Mexican one).
We were all there, it hurts.

On the other hand, if you'll have to wait for it that long it will taste a lot better.
Sad but true... the zx3 saga continues.
  • damonabnormaldamonabnormal Member Posts: 15
I will put a small blur logo decal on the back window to be sure... as you sussed from my online name I love Blur, & in fact have met them! BTW - Damon is my real name... Damn, I want my car...
  • pcleveland2pcleveland2 Member Posts: 516
Don't think it's Ford who isn't treating the hatchback market serious enough. I think it is the US public who isn't that interested in the hatchback market. They don't want a small car, they want a big SUV. The VW Rabbit, the Renault R-16 and leCar, the Dodge Omni, the American Motors Pacer, the Austin American, the Dodge Colt, and on and on, all forgotten. I could continue with the hatchbacks that are no longer around just because the US market wasn't interested. I don't think it's poor marketing on the part of the auto maker. It's just that the marketplace is not interested in a Hatchback. They don't know what they are missing out on. The foci is one of the better, but the American Consumer just doesn't get it. Still am lucky to see more that one ZX3 per day in Western New York. Saw a Audi Hatchling today. A rarety in these parts.

I have the zinc yellow zx3 and love it, I would wait for your egg yolk. (Same color, different name). I never thought that I would like this color car, but absolutely I do. I have had so many positive comments on it and have had it since the end of July. Today yet again I was stopped in a parking lot for questions about my car. Saw a 2001 egg yolk zx3 in my dealers lot today ( east central Ohio) The only difference I could see on it and my car is the tire size. You will not be sorry. So far my car has not been affected by any recalls as it's build date was July. Had my first oil change today as well.

Yes everyone be patient with your mileage, mine has been fairly decent from the beginning though I live in a rural area with little stop and go driving like the bigger cities. But, my mileage is even better since the past few weeks. I'm now getting a steady 32/38 average per gallon.

I have had no problems with this car and continue to enjoy it a lot.

Let's get a little more optimistic here.
Here are some pretty good American market hatches; Honda Civic, VW Golf, BMW 318, and of course our beloved Focus ZX3.
    Good and bad.
High gas prices should turn the interest of the car market towards the hatchbacks, and it can mean only good good good for all of us hatchlovers.
    pc2,good luck in the snow.

Post a pic of the spoiler, I havent seen one on the ZX3 yet...
  • silver_bulletsilver_bullet Member Posts: 1,339
Is it that the people don't care for hatchbacks, or are all of those people just responding to the endless marketing blitz for high-profit SUVs? Maybe a little of the ol' "do your neighbor one better" mentality at work, too. If as much ad money was spent promoting hatchbacks as is now spent promoting all this "extreme activity/hyper luxury/go hide in the woods" nonsense in connection with SUVs, you'd find lots of interest at the dealerships for space and fuel efficient hatches.

One of my neighbors just bought Honda's Insight, the gas and electric hybrid vehicle. Is this a fascinating car, or what?

Will post pic of spoiler as soon as I get my digital camera back. The more I look at it, the more I like it. Lady at work has a new Dirt Kona. Said she loves her car, so that made me feel a heck of a lot better in buying my car.

Also, I'd like to get a list of some good sites that have pretty cool aftermarket accessories.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

here's some fellow's collection of focus links. i haven't seen others like this and this one seems very comprehensive.

    http://www.geocities.com/audiolizard/focusindex/focus.htm

has anybody elso noticed their z's idle sounding not so nice? occasionally, mine -sounds- rough -like a rhythmic pulsing, even when fully warm. idle is still smooth, however, it no longer sounds it.
  • KicKMan1KicKMan1 Member Posts: 45
Now to the board, so forgive this question if it's redundant. Have there been complaints from other Focus owners, specifically ZX3 owners of low gas mileage?

I drive 55 miles a day, highway only. My average mileage is 25.26 mpg after 5000 miles. For a 2500 lb. car, with a 2 litre engine, it should be doing much better. Had it checked once by the dealer who claimed 32 mpg based on his whatchama-meter. However, I did it the old fashioned way: miles driven divided by gallons purchased.

Any feedback on this subject would be great.
  • pcleveland2pcleveland2 Member Posts: 516
Oh, I'm optimistic. Very optimistic. We have some very good American market hatches today including our beloved ZX3. I appreciate the hatchback, just think the public has still not caught on. Hopefully the Generation X'ers will bring them along. A hatch is something one has a love or hate for. Love my ZX3. Wish I still had the R-16, the Rabbit, and my faithful '80 (or earlier) tiny Honda "General Flea". The Honda was not really a hatchback, but it looked the part.

welcome! you are correct, there have been numerous complaints of
    lousy mileage. i have 5spd.-avg. 28.5 , 80%hwy/20%city. i agree it
should do much better.i havent heard a good explanation for it either.
  • zx3beastzx3beast Member Posts: 661
if only a quality domestic hatch was built during the contrived gas shortage days they would have caught on earlier.however,as with most domestic vehicles, the auto mfg.didnt wake-up till the imports forced
them to improve the quality.realistically, the z is the first attempt by
a domestic mfg. to build a quality hatch.having said that, the long term
    quality remains suspect.
  • kerlandskerlands Member Posts: 3
Add mine to the bad mileage stories. Unfortunately, I do mostly stop-and-go driving and with an AT, my mileage has been as low as 19 1/2 mpg. The best I've ever gotten is 25 mpg. But that's the worst complaint I've got so far!
  • pcleveland2pcleveland2 Member Posts: 516
    KicKMan1,
Just filled up tonight. 217 miles since last fill up. 7.4 gallons of gas. = 29.3 miles per gallon. I regularly average between 29 to 30 mpg. 22,000+ miles on the vehicle, about 60 miles per day. This is a varity of open highway at 65+ mph, state highway at 55+ mph and small city 30 mph, hilly terrain overall, with the automatic. Have had winter tires (this always dropped my mileage on previous 4 cyls, but not with the ZX3) for the past two fill ups. Have also noticed that the AC does not decrease the gas mileage. Got better (32/33 mpg) before the injector pressure sensor recall. Took a while to get good the better mileage. Could get better if I babyed it all the time, but I don't. Believe a 4 cyl is meant to be DRIVEN!

I think this being a 16 valve, double overhead cam, cold air injection engine that it is going to use more gas than a 4 cylinder regular engine would. To help off set this, I am running synthetic oil and a drop in K&N air filter. Would like to go to a aftermarket air injector system, but am not convinced of that route yet. Waiting to see what K&N comes up with.

Have to admit that my Escorts sedan and wagen both got better mpg. But they were normal 4 cyl and both lighter in weight. My Nissans also got better, but they were also lighter vehicles. None of them had the get up and go that the ZX3 does. None of them handles as well either! And the ZX3 is a lot more fun to drive. Think I would get a lot better mileage if it was not so much fun to drive. My Ford Ranger gets almost as good mileage, but it can't get out of its own way.

    A tall and wide Hatchback!

Went to pick up a new dishwasher and as the guy take it out to my car he says,
    "Uh Sir..Did you MEASURE"?

I held out my arms and said "Yes, this wide and this high".

Sure nuff it slid right in.Packaging box and all but had to slide it up onto the rear seats. Cleared the roof by about 4 inches and i closed the hatch with room to spare.

I definitely like the large opening into the truck.

I can fit my mountain bike without taking off any wheels and I can also fit the whole frame of my electronic drum set with minimal modifications.

In fact, all of my passengers prefer sitting in the rear bench due to increased headroom and seat width. Is it me or does the front passenger seat seem slightly smaller in width than the drivers?
  • kdominczakkdominczak Member Posts: 174
    why not ford?
HUV (Hatchback the Utility Vehicle), that name would sell the idea of hatchback a lot better.
  • kdominczakkdominczak Member Posts: 174
Did you have to reset your computer (unconnect the battery for 20 minutes) after inserting K&N Drop-in?
  • zx3beastzx3beast Member Posts: 661
i was reading the car reviews by owners at www.epinions.com
in the focus review,2 owners had mentioned they were told ford is de-
signing a special brake pad for the focus. obviously have been many owner complaints concerning the abnormal squeaking and pre-
mature wear. has anybody else heard anything?
  • silver_bulletsilver_bullet Member Posts: 1,339
I hate to sound like one, but... ditch your dirty factory brake pads for EBC Kevlar pads ("Green Stuff") and your brake noises will likely disappear - plus your wheels will stay MUCH cleaner. If you have more than 1K miles on your car, consider resurfacing or replacing the rotors before fitting the new pads. EBC also makes performance rotors, although I haven't checked to see if they stock an application for the Focus. Front brake work on the Focus is so easy it is almost fun. When you have the calipers apart to replace the pads, the rotors can be lifted right off - simple! Remember to use a torque wrench to final tighten your lug nuts, for safety's sake, as well as to provide an even clamping force on the rotor.

Has anyone received notice from Ford on this recall? My dealer mentioned to me that my car is part of this recall but I have not heard anything from Ford on it (mail or the website).
  • brianinmassbrianinmass Member Posts: 4
I've seen so many posts regarding this, and since I'm always tracking it on my zx3, here's my $0.02 worth:
    29.5 mpg in winter months
    31.5 mpg in summer/warm weather
    -over 26,000 miles since January
-no noticable reduction due to A/C
-usually drive 80 miles/day mix of highway and many traffic lights
-sometimes accelerate off of the lights quicker than needed ;-)
-all time best mpg/tank: 35+ driving from maine to massachusetts this summer (can't remember exact figure, but seem to think it was just a hair below 36 mpg).

Adding insult to injury for the small car market, State Farm insurance has announced they will began to offer sizeable discounts to drivers of large full size cars and SUV's because they're injuries are lower and less severe. What they don't take into account is that these gas guzzling, road hogging land yachts usually end up killing the driver of the small car.

Maybe if gas prices go up to about $4 a gallon like in europe then people will start to think about the waste and pollution their SUV's are pumping out.

My attitude towards hatchbacks was shifted in a positive direction after 1) travelling frequently to europe and 2) realizing that no matter how big they made the trunk you can't fit anything in it if the opening is tiny.

Automakers are partially at fault with hatchbacks because quite simply they won't make them since they don't rake in the $$$. GM loses money on every small car it sells but they make up for it in the killing on SUV's and trucks. Before the Focus the Escort was only mediocre at it's introduction and then extremely long in the tooth when it was axed. Chrysler's Neon is waste of metal. Apparently domestic manufacturers didn't care that Honda could get 17k for a civic because they're THAT good...or that Toyota could make tons on their Corolla..... who's laughing now?

The SUV market will eventually plateau and shrink as gas prices will most likely not decline. Cities aren't getting less crowded, parking isn't getting easier to find...the demise is inevitable.

    -Frank

    Howdy All,
Just wanted to get a feel for prices on a K&N air filter I keep hearing about on these boards and some brake pads that have less dust and squeal. Any ideas are much appreciated.

    Thanks!
  • KicKMan1KicKMan1 Member Posts: 45
I just took my focus in for this (and for crappy mileage). The dealer replaced my rear brake shoes based on either a recall or a TSB. There are also many complaints about the front brake pads causing a film on the disks which makes the squealing noise.
  • KicKMan1KicKMan1 Member Posts: 45
Haven't received notice either. I brought it to the attention of my dealer and they've ordered the replacement. They didn't seem too concerned about it though. After all, it's not their forehead that's at risk.
  • KicKMan1KicKMan1 Member Posts: 45
    Brian

Glad to hear that you're getting good mileage. This is good evidence that it's not something "inherent" with the vehicle. The down side is that Ford isn't too eager to get to the bottom of it.
  • pcleveland2pcleveland2 Member Posts: 516
    kdominczak,
No! The computer should pickup on this over a period of time and adjust itself. It I were doing a major aftermarket change, such as a different air intake, I would consider it. You got me wondering now. The drop in mpg after the injector pressure sensor. Didn't reset it them and mpg went down. I wonder, just might do it this weekend. Maybe computer does not pickup on the changes as you travel along.

    Thanks for the thought.

Have read pros and cons on it. I think it helped, but cannot prove it. Price wise, for as long as it is suppose to last, I think it is worth it.

silver bullet - at this rate, we may need a separate file cabinet and
secretary to file and make appointments. whoever said the z wasnt a fun car? you gotta love it,it sure has its special quirks. i must have
purchased the surprise edition without knowing it. i cant get mad, i
just laugh about the situation.this car will make its mark for all the
wrong reasons. despite a flaw here or there, i still enjoy the ride and
quite frankly because of that,im hooked. im especially a sucker for that
stock cd system.i am prepared to tough it out. after all, by the time all
the recalls are completed, it will be a new car again, the way it was intended to be. i hope this has been a hard lesson for fords procurement
of parts division has learned. cheap parts make cheap assemblies no
matter how well they are put together.sooner or later it all comes back to roost.
mileage - there has been legitimate concerns regarding poor mileage
posted by both auto and manual drivers. although i do not get upset by
the 25 to 27.5 i average, it would be nice to get another 5 per. keep in
mind this car exhibits some very strange tendacies in the way this engine performs. im not well-versed in regards to the on-board computer electronics, im still very much old school but if one is getting below 25 mpg. there is more going on then just the driver. the spouses zx2 auto, which i swear is quicker or seems to be, mileage is
on avg. 28 to30 mpg. 33,000 miles, not one recall and runs like a champ. go figure.

however,i do thank the buyers of suv's for making it possible for
a mfg. like ford to splurge on a hatchback such as the z.of course they
didnt splurge on it,but they made a decent attempt to make a somewhat
quality one.certainly, there is more room for improvement.i.e.
engine + trans and other third world sourced components.i know ive
mentioned this before, but the zetec performs better in the zx2 than
the zx3.i cant figure it out yet.

What's the deal with this new engine earlier posts refer to? Same as Mondeo? Any idea when it'll show up?

The Pillar recall is for the 4 doors and station wagons only.
  • kdominczakkdominczak Member Posts: 174
pc2, snow looks great but not in the major city(NYC)it can quickly paralyse the entire town.
jayoung, 2.0 145 hp from Mondeo sounds like a future replacement for our current 2.0 130 hp.
Ford is claiming that new engine is better in every respect (better fuel economy while being more powerful!?,40lbs lighter ,quieter ,smoother, just better)
Sounds great, but is it really coming here?
    Only Ford knows.
  • silver_bulletsilver_bullet Member Posts: 1,339
There seems to be lots of confusion about this recall. Go to the NHTSA website - it clearly states that the recall applies to "3 door sedans, 4 door sedans, and wagons". We lucky 3 door owners are supposed to get the mailed notice first... has anyone gotten theirs? I'm still waiting to take my car in for the wheel bearing recall (and water leak from the A/C!) until I get the A-pillar letter.

Honestly - if I hadn't given my car to my fiancee to drive, I'd sell it and get something without a blue oval attached. It is a neat car, but the build quality of this car leaves much to be desired. She loves it, though, and won't give it up... oh well.

Its nearly time for the first oil change and my local parts place can't even find the number for a Focus ZX3 oil filter. ANybody know the numbers for brands competing w/ motorcraft?? Last resort will be the dealer. ALso, difficult to find 5W30 oil as specified.
    Thanks,

  • silver_bulletsilver_bullet Member Posts: 1,339
Just stick with the Motorcraft filter, FL-2005. It is available from most auto parts stores, is inexpensive, and has the correct anti-drain back valve for the Zetec engine. Likewise, 5W-30 oil is very common if you go to a decent store - even my local Walmart stocks several brands of conventional and synthetic oil in this weight. The 2000 Focus manual calls for 10W-30, and I'm running Mobil 1 in my car. Despite claims to the contrary, I don't see the point in second guessing the factory by switching filter brands. Unless you want to go crazy and fit a serious remote filtering set-up (like Canton-Meca), the Motorcraft filter changed every 3K miles will do a good job.
  • zxntex3zxntex3 Member Posts: 5
Anyone have an idea if the build date would coincide with the recalls? My car was built in August of this year. I just bought it on the 28th of November. Any insight would be much appreciated.

    Thanks
  • tickbittytickbitty Member Posts: 250
I think I mentioned it before, but when I had my oil changed at the dealer I reminded them that it only takes 4.5 quarts, and they said something about the zx2 having a larger zetec, taking 5 quarts, I think. Perhaps if it has a larger engine that accounts for the improved performance you perceived.
  • cgsangelcgsangel Member Posts: 79
I haven't received a recall letter on the pillar fix yet, although we're supposed to get them first.

My brother had quite a wait before they were able to get the new carpeting for his AC leak. But he told me they did a good job with the fix and installation.

Does Ford stock the rubber mats? I had asked for an accessory catalog once, but the sales manager didn't have any handy and the parts dept was closed that day. I think for winter, and maybe year-round, they would hold up better than the carpeted mats. I like the idea of stock mats because the driver's side locks in and won't slide.

Bringing in the car for my first oil change/tire rotation 'maintenance #1' and to get the squeels/clunks and vibrations looked into.

If the car DOES NOT come out like a NEW car should (only has 2,000 miles on it after 6 months!) Then the Chit hits the fan! And i really mean that.

-Brakes squeel at times/most of the time
    -Drivers door clunks at times
-now a noise under right side dash area
    -engine sputters(new word)at steady speeds/under
    3000 RPM
    -steering wheel vibration
-platic trim pieces laying on the rear seat floor
-VERY hard to shift in first gear/now also 2'nd

As much as i try to be pleased with what the car has to offer i am also worried that if i pile on the mileage and THEN decide to trade the car in then i will take a double wammy!

I paid near retail minus $200 and they gave me peanuts for my trade in.

Not mad nor angry but i am upset that for my first NEW car i was expecting much more peace of mind.

Oh and the remote? HA! another glitch (both keys)
Oh Oh Oh and the A/C problems i have....

Nice car but Quality of build is NOT is no where near what i had expected.

Now if the car comes out from the Ford Dealer running like it SHOULD then i will be a 100% happy customer!

Whyford? Heck after reading the awards i truly thought this was going to be a great automobile.

    That's the truth.

i second your recommendation on the oil filter.
good call, there are distinct differences with the
motorcraft filter. there are other motorcraft filters that fit but not properly.i got a heads-up
from a sharp young mechanic who had serviced my
    zx2.
  • zx3beastzx3beast Member Posts: 661
you would think the engines would be the same, afterall they both have the 2000 rpm quirk.i
suspect the air intake and throttle assembly are
    set-up differently.thanks for your response.
