As far as True Off road capacity (rocks, logs and cliffs, not dirt roads) the Allroad will also come out ahead. Its got a better 4wd system and marginally better ground clearence.
As far as durability and reliability go with the Volvo. From what I have heard the Allroad is a maintence hog (not that the XC is great). I have never heard of a powered adjustable suspension that didn't require lots of expensive maintience after a few years, VW's track record does not indicate it will be any different. The Allroad has more switches and gizmos and gadgets. In the world of European electronics that just means more to break.
Safety wise I doubt there is much of a difference, both are excellent choices. Style and decor is a matter of personal taste. Gas milage sucks on both.
If money was not that much of an issue (60K vs 40K decked out) I would lease the Allroad but buy the Volvo.

While I have not looked to see exactly what scheaduled maint includes in the Audi service contract it usually means fluids, rotations and inspections, maybe adjustments. Of course if they find something wrong in the inspection it doesn't cover the repair. Audi might be different or they might include other stuff like belts, injector flusings, engine adjustments, rotors, pads, spark plugs and such. I'd do some research. If price is a concern call up your Audi and Vovlo service depts, ask what is in the "recommended" maintence for 7,15,30K miles and how much it costs. Most "free-maintence" is actually factored into a jacked up purchase price (think of it as pre-paid maintence)
For me it's an issue of frustration. I get really annoyed when something on my car doesn't work like it should, especially if it is noticable or I want to use it. I feel compelled to get it fixed and that usually means I have to take time out of my scheadule and possibly do without my beloved awesome car for a day or two. The fact that the repair was covered under warranty (you'd be amazed how many are not) is some conselation but I still had to drive across town, drop of my car and get rides elsewhere and pick it up unless your dealership has a generous loaner program, our local dealers do not.
Of course the fact that the potentially less reliable car is 50% more expensive would raise my blood pressure even more!

I'm suprised you went for the forester compared to the VDC which is in the same class as the XC.
Any suggestions/thoughts how much this is going to cost me to get fixed?

If th clearcoat has been rubbed off in spots then getting it professionally buffed to take out the scratches is not an option. You'll need to get those parts repainted with clearcoat. I'd estimate that your looking at the $600 range for a good job, more or less depending on quality. If your consider that option do not put any synthetic waxes on those parts.
Give you local paint shop a call, they should be able to quote you something pretty close to actual over the phone.
Huh?
Did you look in the archives? The brickboard archives their discussions pretty quickly.
Clearcoat finishes are very soft and vulnerable to surface scratches. The marks you see are probably superficial and may not have ruined the clearcoat. I recommend you use Meguiars products that are found at most auto parts and discount stores. I have found the following two products to be especially helpful:
#2 Fine Cut Cleaner
#9 Swirl Remover
Begin with the #9, since it is less aggressive, and may remove the surface scratches. If the scratches remain after several applications, use the #2, and follow with #9 to remove the fine scratches left with the #2. Follow with a good quality wax product.
The Meguiars #9 is great for removing the hairline scratches left by car washes, etc. prior to waxing. Personally, I always wash cars by hand, since car washes are so abusive to the finish [except when compared to teenage sons]. If you need additional information, check www.meguiars.com. They will assist you by phone, and will also provide you with specific recommendations for your particular vehicle.
I hope this helps . . . Good Luck!
Dan
Thanks for the suggestion.

In order to figure out if it is a good lease we need to know a couple more things.
1. What was the original MSRP (sticker)
2. What mileage are you allowed? (12k or 15k)
3. when you write $16xx due, does that include all fees, or is it that figure plus T.T.$ L.?
Let me know and I'll let you know.
Thanks in advance for your help. I need to make a desision on this by end of this week. Here's answers to your Q's: Original MSRP=$40,450; 12K miles per year; $1,645 due is all-encompassing - includes everything.
Thanks again!

Basically, the XC does really badly on an offroad track when compared to a Subaru Outback Legacy. With and without something being towed.
I'm sure other things like tire condition may come into play, however I would expect these tests were conducted fairly.
Is this a case of testing where the Subaru's system would inherently (for some reason) do better?
I'll also post this on the Outback Legacy forum.
I have linked this discussion into that folder, but it will always reside here in Station Wagons.
Looking forward to meeting everyone!

I have not experienced these problems and there was quite a lengthy discussion about this on volvspy a few weeks ago.
I do believe the xc tested in the video was malfunctioning.
The video at the following link provides are far better comparison.

The DSTC stability control system might help since it has 4 wheel traction control, however, it will all depend on the design. If you have more questions about 4WD and AWD systems, feel free to stop by the 4WD & AWD systems explained discussion topic.

It appeared that both hills were similar. One may have been more damp than the other, but basically similar grades with dirt.
If the Volvo was truly limited by it's system, I would think that we would see this limitation in both tests on hills, not just one. I feel that in one test (the non English one), the DSC must have been disengaged, despite what is said.
Why else would you even put in an AWD system if the the front wheels slip and the rear stay put in such a needy circumstance?
Kirk
Thanks a lot

Here is a new article on the Volvo Overseas Delivery Program at Swedespeed:
Volvo Overseas Delivery Program
It is a really good deal if some of you are thinking about doing the program, as it saves a lot of money.

One would expect the manufacturer to stand by its customers faced with catastrophic repairs with expense far beyond the normal repair bill a car that it designed and built. I found Volvo Customer Service to be passive and circular in their response. I guess I was expecting more from a firm that promotes an aura of preferred customer service. It seems that I am being told to just suck up this expense and go away. About the only thing I can do at this point is place a large placard in my rear window stating “My car’s a lemon. Ask me about my $4K transmission repair bill”.
The window sticker price was $40,475 dialer give it to me for $36,300 which is below invoice price
Monthly payment was $408. After I put Refundable Security deposit of $4500(means will refund to me after leas-end) I got $355 + tax = $375/month. Someone told me that it will be a problem to return the
Refundable Security deposit back. Is anyone have information about this?
And is it good deal for this car? I live in Central New Jersey
Regards
Len
Did the automaker incentives draw you to this SUV, or did the lower fuel prices register in your mind and lead you to this decision? Maybe it was the enhanced capabilities like all-wheel-drive appealing more than usual, as we all are extra focused on safety these days.... Please post here or send your input to jfallon@edmunds.com
