Hi, I and my wife have noticed that our new 02 V70 XC did not start as usual. We got our car in October, 25 2001. In fact it starts after 4-6 seconds after the key was turned in the ignition, like a battery is very weak. It does not happened all the time but since we got the car we encountered it 5-6 times could it be moisture in the fuel tank or is it ignition problem? If any of you, guys know about this, pleas post your notes Thanks, Len
The S80 board is sprinkled with a lot of electrical glitches, like Headlights burning out, doors that won't lock, taillights burning out, etc. Do those of you with '01 V70 XC's have those same issues? I am seriously considering buying one, but I am afraid of getting a $40,000 car that will be riddled with minor/major glitches? Any comments or thoughts?
I have taken my 99 XC to the dealer twice to find the reason why there is a hum or whine that appears to come from the rear axle when the vehicle is over 50 mph and I apply the gas. The dealer says that he can't find anything (surprise, surprise). Has anyone has similar problems and what was the problem. I am nearing the end of my warranty and I don't want a $4k tranny bill waiting for me!
Also I am losing about 1qt of oil every 1k miles. The dealer says that this is normal. Normal to burn that much oil? I thought burning oil was a thing of the past!
I picked up my new 2001 XC last Feb and have driven 17000 miles so far. First, I love the car. But, there have been a few annoyances such as the failed control module preventing proper remote entry operation. Took the dealer 3 visits to identify and fix it. They tried very hard to blame it on my tinted windows. Seems to have been a common problem. I now have an issue where the doors will lock fine but the alarm won't always arm. Dealer tried the tinted window explanation again but had trouble explaining why locking from the door panel produced the same result. They haven't solved this inconsistant issue yet.
My biggest complaints are poor headlight power and terrible wipers. I had to install winter blades to prevent streaking left by the new factory blades. The dealer replaced the new blades soon after I picked up the car - no improvement.
I do question Volvo's committment to quality. When I took delivery, my cars door seals looked like they were 25 years old - they were literally crumbling apart. I also found a large cut, obviously done before installation, in the carpeting. How this car left the factory like this is evidence of a poor quality assurance program.
The sunroof had a loud rattle in it for quite awhile. The dealer didn't try very hard to solve it until I got loud. They kept saying they couldn't hear it. Once they took me seriously they tore into it and found a broken part that was rattling around. Very quiet now.
Dealer fixed these problems but I ended up making too many visits very soon after purchase.
My highway/city gas milage is usually 20-21, on a cross country trip I saw 24mpg. I use 87 octane fuel.
For those worried about performance, the car is not a hot rod, but is very capable. My 18 yr old step-son gives the power level a thumbs up so it must be OK. I have no problems climbing mountain passes and plenty of go when I need it on the road.
For a well driven car, the car is still very solid. No rattles. The doors kinda a clank a bit when you close them, but it's not bad.
Overall reliability, comfort, performance has been great. Quality is suspect. I am glad it's leased. I do wonder if this particular car had a troubled start, or if this is indicative of Volvo. This is my first Volvo, not sure yet if I'll get another. Like I said, I love the car, but....
I'd sure like to see what other owners have to say about their experiences.
I just drove one for the second time and was pleased with pickup from a dead stop as well as passing gear. More than satisfactory for me. Faster than the 99 Olds Bravada I am now driving.
I'm curious how much dealers have been willing to dicker lately on 2002 XC's? The dealer I just talked to said that they were giving $3300 off '01's but were "less flexible" on 02's - Edmunds TMV seems to say you end up paying list? - I sure hope not, since these puppies are expensive!
Does anyone's 2002 V70 XC with the premium package have a leather steering wheel? My wife and I picked up our 2002 Nautic Blue XC with premium package, touring package and cold weather package last Friday. We love it even more than our '99 S70. According to all documentation, a leather steering wheel is included in the premium package - I'll be darned, I can't find mine! No one at Volvo customer service or the dealer seems to be giving me an answer. Other than this, sales and sevice at my local dealer (Hassel - Huntington, NY) have been fantastic.
I had this problem with my 1999 Volvo XC. The problem was traced to low fuel pressure at the time of starting. A check valve in the fuel pump, I was told, leaked and allowed the fuel pressure to bleed off.
The longer start time, and successive cranking, was required to raise the fuel pressure so the engine would start.
I had the same question for the dealer when I took delivery form my 02 XC. The answer is: The Premium package which include lather wrap on the steering wheel is actually Introductory Premium package which include every think as Premium except lather cover for steering wheel. And I bet, the price you paid or leas your XC was way less then window price?
When would be the soonest that an '01 XC would be coming off of a 2 year lease? I can't remember when they were first available. What do you think the price would be for an '01 with 24,000 miles off-lease?

As usual, my dealer is doing what is necessary to keep me happy. The dealer seems to make or break the Volvo experience and my dealer has always made my experience a great one.
According to Edmunds the XC's EPA mileage is 18 city/22 Hwy, but when I test drove a Cross Country recently I'm pretty sure that the left rear window stated mileage of 19/25. What's up?
I own a 2000 XC SE. In December I got the 22500 service at the dealership. The tech noted that the transmission fluid needed to be changed. Currently, the car has 26000 miles on it. Is it common for these cars to need a transmission fluid change so early when the manuals indicate that this is something to be done at aroud 70 - 75K miles?
I drive about 20K miles a year. I make a 1/2 hour, 12 - 13 mile commute in the morning to drop my kids and go to work (car keeps running for the whole trip, not stop and go). I do the same in the evening. We take this car on most road trips (about 4K miles/year.)
Anyone else who's needed to have their transmission fluid changed so soon?

I'm looking at possibly buying a 1998 V70 XC. Seems to be a lot of mold or other allergens in the interior air when I drive it. Dealer mentioned there is a filter in the air circulation system, that he could change. I see nothing about it in the owner's manual. Anyone know of such a filter? Anyone have a similar problem?
Secondly, when I open either back window and drive over 35 MPH, I hear a very loud noise, feel it even, "whump-whump-whump" like a Huey helicopter. Anyone experience anything similar?

Service bulletin for transmission fluid change, I had a change at 47K but under warrenty. Whump, whump is a resonance, keep windows up at speed. I have a 99 XC with very few problems. Acceleration is great, car goes like hell, cruises effortlessly at 100+. For children get the installed child seat. When not in use, it folds into the back seat arm rest. The filter is in the ventilation system which much be exercised or a smell develops, why, I don't know, but it seems a common problem. I am concerned about the reliablity problesm I have read about and was considering another XC wagon in 2003 but will wait to hear more opinions. Anyone have any good experience with XC wagons?
Thanks for letting me know about the TSB on the transmission fluid. The servicing dealership tried to pull a fast one on me. They are now going to flush the fluid at thier expense (after they tried to tell me these things just "happen")
I also noticed two other TSBs that describe problems similar to ones I have noticed - not major like burnt trnsmsn fld.
I was considering the integrated telephone option for my 02 XC and was wondering if anyone had any experience with it. As I understand it, it can be added at any time post-purchase and is dealership-installed. What prices have you been quoted? I like the idea of being able to keep my existing service and phone (assuming it can handle a Nokia 8290, which uses the newer style of Nokia-specific plug).
I was reading on the Volvo page about the S60 with the electronic AWD system. It says that because the system is electronic, it disengages when the ignition is turned off allowing the car to be towed on 2 wheels (instead of on a platform I'm assuming). Does this mean that the XC with it's non-electronic AWD system cannot be towed on 2 wheels and will require a platform truck? Thanks for any info.
Our 2001 XC has 37K on the oem Pirelli Scorpions. They seem to have a lot of tread left. I thought that if they lasted into the fall I would pick up a set of Bridgestone Blizzaks, the tires rated best in ice and snow by all the buff books. With the XC while we don't necessarily need more traction (although our Jeep Grand Cherokee with agressive BF Goodrich tires is far better in snow)we would appreciate the better braking and control of the winter tires.
In the in the spring of 2004 my thought was to buy new Scorpions or Yokohoma GO39's --rated highly by Car and Driver but at $84 from Tire Rack they are the exact same price as the Pirellis.
Questions:
1) How many miles are people getting out of their Pirelli's?
2) I now have a chance to pick up a set of used Blizzaks WS16 with only 300 miles on them for $250 (asking price). They are 205/55R/16. While they will fit, it is a step down in size from and a step wider in footprint from the 215/65/16's that I now have. Any ideas?
Some time has passed, but when I bought my 2001 XC70 in April 2001 I paid the dealer's invoice price -- not list price. My dealer readily showed me the invoice. Good luck.
It appears that Volvo decided to continue calling it the "Premium Package" in all its literature and list a leather wrapped steering wheel as one of its items, but when the car actually arrives, its called the "Intro Premium Package" on the sticker and omits the leather wrapped steering wheel. The only thing I could get out of my dealer was that Volvo reserves the right to change specifications at any time. I think it is very misleading and, quite frankly, stinks. Has anyone had any luck getting their dealer to put the leather wrapped steering wheel on later at no cost? That's what I'm going to shoot for.
Yes, $140 seems high for that 7,500 mile service on your 2001 XC70, at least in my area (southcentral PA). I paid $88. I was shocked, however, when a plain old oil change (I go in every 3,750 miles) cost me $42.
My dealer finally got to the bottom of the missing leather steering wheel cover mystery. Apparently, Volvo ran out of the leather steering wheel covers for a short time, so instead of stopping production, just changed the name of the Premium Package to the Intro-Premium Package, removed the leather steering wheel cover from the spec, and reduced the MSRP by $200. So if your car happened to be made during this period, you won't have the leather steering wheel cover, but you shouldn't have paid for it either. The only option now is to buy an after market steering wheel cover, which my dealer claims looks very nice as well.
I love the look and drive of the xc but I've heard terrible reports re. Volvo's and stupid and not so stupid problems. What have YOUR exeriences been??
dtillson, We have a 2000 XC and had to have the brakes a rotors (front and rear) replaced at around 12K miles. The brake pads still had 80% of their life left, but they had to be replaced because of the bad rotors.... We had to pay for the pads!!!!! After a lot of complaining we only ended up paying for the 20% used, but it was a hassle. The best part was we have been told this is a known problem, but from the board I don't think it's that common. Other than that it's been OK. However, that said becasue of the hassle we went through over the brakes it will make us look at other vehicles before we buy another Volvo.
My dealer (Hassel in Huntington, NY) supposedly was authorized by the regional Volvo rep to replace my steering wheel with a leather one from an XC when they had one in stock. Unfortunately, I haven't heard from them in about a month. (even though they advertise over 50 in stock???) As for the price, yes it was adjusted on the window sticker but as far as what I paid - I walked out the door paying almost exactly the same as the original quote which included the extra $200. Sounds more like a FORD bait and switch to save a buck than a Volvo treatment.
I am also a bit disappointed in some of the quality - the hold down grommets on the floor mats are unscrewing and falling apart, the carpet has pulled away from the lower footwell kickpanel, the driver side door sill must have had adhesive left over from the protective plastic and dirt sticking to it is nearly impossible to get off...only 2000 miles...other than that my wife and I do love the car and our dealer is usually excellent with the service they provide.

I can feel vibrations in the steering wheel and even in the throttle at speeds above 50mph - The dealer has always claimed that my wheels are out of balance and I have had these rebalanced thrice in 36000 miles at $40 a pop. The wheel balancing seems to mitigate the problem somewhat, but not entirely - which leads me to believe that there are other problems. I also find it hard to believe that anyone would design a car that is so sensitive to wheel balance. The dealer could any problems with the suspension. Any thoughts?
2. The wind noise is awful at speeds over 40mph. It seems to be roof related (may the rooof rack). Has anyone had this problem and if so has removing the roof rack solved it? Thanks,
Has anyone had a problem with the warning light for the generator come on intermittently? If you have, what did you do about it or find out what was wrong? I am having this problem. Could this be a loose belt or is the generator preparing to die? Any experience with this problem??? Thanks

Has anyone noticed when driving the 2002 wagons/sedans that the road glare reflections on the windshield coming from the top of the dash are very distracting?
About 1 year ago I took delievery of a V70 T5 in Sweden and upon delivery at my local dealer, I had the phone installed. Heres how it works.
The drivers side headrest is switched out with a special one that has a speaker and microphone (sticks out like an Operator type thing). The cradle for the phone is placed next to the steering wheel so that you do not have to take your eyes off the rode as much. When I had mine installed, it was only compatible with the Nokia 5100/6100 series phones (which was fine for because i have a Nokia 6161). The option cost about $600.
The right headlight on my 15 month old XC with 26K has gone out. Is it true that you cannot just replace a bulb but that you have to replace the entire assembly for $250 plus? Is this covered by warranty? Any thought appreciated.
I bought a 2001 XC and had the CD-based navigation system installed because they assured me that they were not coming out with DVD. I am really upset to find that the 2002 has a DVD-based system. Can the 2001 system be modified to integrate the new DVD? I understand that virtually everything on the car is the same for the two years.

Hi. My husband and I are considering a Volvo V70XC for our next car. We test drove one today and experienced a problem when driving on the interstate. At speeds around 60+mph, the steering seemed loose. ...meaning that for the slightest movement of the steering wheel, there was a dramatic movement of the car to the appropriate side. This is a concern to us as it's easy to hit a small bump and jiggle your arm and end up moving the car unintentionally. (hopefully not off the road or into another car - but who knows?)
I'm not sure if we just test drove a bad car, or if not - can the steering be adjusted easily? Other than that problem, we liked the car. But if we can't resolve this issue, we'll be getting a Lexus RX300 instead.
Also - does anyone have any comments on the Don Beyer dealership's service in Virginia?
I'm interested in hearing from those current Volvo XC owners who previously owned a VW Passat Wagon. We are currently considering these two vehicles and would like to hear comments from those that have experience with both.
We don't have a Volvo dealer where I live, so I'd have to buy from a dealer about an hour and a half away, so that reliability is a concern.
